First Look: POC Launches Fully-Recyclable Helmet

Jun 14, 2022

Helmets don't last forever. And because they are usually made of many different types of inseparable plastic, they can't usually be recycled. That means any impact big enough to cast doubt on the structural integrity of the helmet means a one-way trip to the landfill.

To address this, POC has been working for two years on the Myelin, a helmet that uses the fewest different types of plastic as possible and no glue to hold them together, where every component has been designed for recycling. That means that at the end of its life it can be deconstructed by the owner into components containing a single type of plastic, which can then be recycled. Composite materials containing multiple plastics cannot be commercially recycled.

The helmet is currently made of 50% recycled materials, and it's possible to recycle 100% of the helmet after use, so it's a small but important step on the road to a circular economy.

One obvious example of how they've achieved this is the fabric shell, which goes over the EPS liner but, unlike the hard plastic shells used in most helmets, can be easily separated from it. Hidden inside is the fit system, which allows the helmet to be adjusted to fit the user's head, and is inspired by the snap-fit systems in baseball caps. It's made in a single piece that crosses the entire helmet, eliminating the need for anchors immoulded in the EPS, which can't be easily taken apart.

A network of ventilation holes in the top of the helmet's fabric shell is designed to allow heat to escape.

Obviously, safety is still paramount with a helmet, and the Myelin, which is designed mostly for commuting, passes the relevant safety standards.

While there's no word on if and when this approach will make its way into mountain biking helmets, the press release suggests this is on the cards: "The Myelin is an important step forward, but there is a lot to continue to do and POC’s ambition is to transfer as much of its research and testing in sustainable-resource use into more products over time. The principle is to have the highest level of safety and protection whilst looking to minimize as much of the negative impact as possible."

The Myelin is now available for 100 EUR / 100 GBP / 100 USD / 120 CAD.

 Vantablack lol

 @mior: Exactly my thought!

Actually, a helmet covered in Vantablack would be pretty awesome. Or a bike...talk about "murdered out."

Finally a helmet with a Vantablack finish.

@mior: f*ck Anish Kapur, I want a helmet in pinkest pink!

Ride bikes at 4, then your horse at 6

Like matching red or blue for crips and bloods in certain neighborhoods, it's specifically designed so equestrian riders won't give snarky comments or dirty looks to cyclists on multiuser trails...
  • 5 0
@Jamminator: I'm certain that if an equestrian saw a cyclist wearing this skull muffin, they would immediately bully and taunt the hell out of them like an ODoyle in a Sandler flick.

Not going to lie, scrolling down the Pinkbike home page, saw the picture and thought why is there a horse rider on Pinkbike.

Then take the Patagonia rep out on your catamaran after a drive to the shore in your 911.

Excellent, no better color for a commuting helmet than, "Safety Black"
  • 4 0
They just need Dan Ackroyd’s Irwin Mainway to introduce the product.

@sngltrkmnd: TBF, they have other colours.

I applaud companies for taking steps to reduce the waste stream, especially plastic. But, being capable of recycling and actually getting recycled are two different things. Here in the US, we toss clean recyclables into a blue container with hopes of a greener future. The truth is, most of it gets tossed into a landfill anyway. I'm not saying we should give up, but we need to come at these kinds of problems from all sides. Cool helemt.

Ok. What steps are you taking?
  • 4 0
Same in UK most ‘recycled’ plastics go to landfill because the companies that actually do the recycling only want those plastics that make them the most money.
  • 6 2
Surely the fact that it IS recyclable is a step in the right direction. I fully get your point, but not everyone lives in the US. At least in countries that offer a realistic option for recycling this, you now can, rather than throwing your helmet in landfill. Now we just need to get used to the looks, but given the way cycling clothing generally looks to outsiders, that shouldn’t be an insurmountable challenge.
  • 1 0
@kubikeman Might be a cool system for a "helemt", but I'm not sure if I'd call it a cool helmet. Wink
  • 2 0
Canada is no better. Most of our recyclables end up in the landfill too.
  • 1 0
@vp27: it is. There is no point in having setups for recycling stuff if we can't actually recycle our products.
Apparently we have some facilities to recycle this sort of stuff. So it is a win win. That is if it does actually get recycled after we put it in the bin
  • 1 0
For sure we need better recycling infrastructure and incentives too, but designed-for-recycling products are a necessary step.
  • 2 0
Plastic recycling for the majority of plastics might as well be a pipe dream. There's absolutely no hope of recycling many plastics simply because making virgin plastics is considerably cheaper than recycling them. Plastic recycling is merely a tool for the plastics industry to improve their image and make their product appear as sustainable, when the only true means of making plastic sustainable is reducing the amount we produce and removing it's use from single use items.
  • 1 0
Here they incinerate most waste including plastic and incredibly they count it as recycling Frown
  • 1 0
 @korev:
well, thermic recycling is still better than dumping it in the ocean.
In Germany we once had thermic recycling, then companys figured out it is cheaper to ship it over half the world to some poorer country where it then ends up in the ocean.
See, recycling works! All hail capitalism

I thought they abandoned those because they caught on the pavement and snapped your neck, doing very much the opposite of MIPS.
  • 1 0
 @russhandsome: that's a good point. I take back what I said.
  • 2 0
@Rexuis-Twin: admittedly it would look sweet!

My instinctive reaction is that I try not to get through helmets so quickly that I'd really be concerned about whether they're recyclabe or not. But I suppose they have a finite lifespan one way or the other, so if they can make them recyclable without affecting performance, it seems like a good idea.
  • 1 0
I think my brain also has a finite lifespan for impact induced scrambling
  • 1 0
Ya, I just threw away 4 helmets the other day... felt weird throwing these huge chunks of plastic and foam straight into the garbage.

(My kids outgrew their skate/scooter as well as their MTB helmets and they were pretty trashed so were not good for re-use by anyone).

My own enduro trail fullface is getting older and there's one race I do every year that checks your manufacture date and your helmet has to be less that 3 years old. I also just realized my own skate helmet is 23 years old! Should probably get a new one. My wife's enduro full face is also 4 years old... so it might be done soon-ish?!

That's what... 7?!! helmets from one household that are, or might end up in the trash... jeeze, surprised myself. Maybe they do need to be more recyclable.

The perfect environmentally sustainable helmet! Nobody will buy one so won't need to produce it or recycle it. Genius! I propose single use helmets made from a bag you fill with either popcorn or tortilla chips. The straps will be made from THC infused hemp.

Perfect for riding your horse to your bike stable

POC spent how much designing and developing this to have it look like that??!! GTFO!
  • 9 1
But to be fair to POC, nothing they make looks good to me at all so I will applaud their consistency!

Paired with a grey or red Tshirt, you can look like a Microphone or Queens Guard

Ah yes, the 1980s Vetta helmet revival.

  • 5 0
Soooo… Did they just spend 2 years reinventing the bike helmet from the 1980’s?
  • 3 0
That's the helmet for many different sportive activities...if your a royal Queen's guard...who can't decide between cycling or riding his horse...or acting as the top of a pool cue.
  • 2 0
Reduce, reuse, recylcle. In that order. So...I'm the greenest in the land, because I don't even wear a helmet. If I crack my skull in a crash and die I will become more green than you can possibly imagine because I will totally stop buying crap and driving around.
  • 5 1
I don't know why but this makes me think of that picture of a cat with a watermelon helmet

Scrolled right past the video and the article to the comments on this one...

Clearly POC didn't come here 1st for their market research.

Sense when did POC get into equestrian gear?

Recycled shouldn't automatically mean boring AF.

This is just a black version of the white q-tip helmet I had to wear as a child
  • 4 0
How long does it take to get recycled into a better looking helmet?
  • 3 0
So is this technically New/Used?? Just was wondering how to classify it on the buy sell forum.
  • 4 4
great step in the right direction, these will surely sell well, especially to urban riders, commuters etc comments on aesthetics are subjective, people said the same thing about the Octal when it came out and the Trabec and they went on to become industry leaders, break sales records and icons....

Looks like a cheap equestrian helmet.

i love the recycling concept, but why does it have to be so ugly?
  • 2 0
Looks like my Google Nest....be cool if it worked like one
  • 1 1
For urban use or commuting, this helmet is not too ugly in my opinion... And I'm honestly surprised, the price is not too far from reasonable!
