Pinkbike Update: BuySell Filters & Categories

Oct 7, 2022
by Jake
Quickest of introductions: I'm Jake, a product manager at Pinkbike. My day job is finding little and big ways to improve the site and user experience, without burning the place down. I'm a longtime PB dork, mediocre rider, and by total happenstance, Levy and I enjoy very similar overpowered shitbox classic cars.

Last week we made some changes to the categories and filtering on Pinkbike BuySell. It was a long overdue cleanup, prompted by requests from users going back years. Thank you for your continued patience. The goal is to make BuySell more intuitive and accessible to folks on desktop and mobile devices, and to make the most popular items easier to find. This is among the first of a string of tweaks planned.

Less than 37lb 16.8kg Incredibly fast
Not a trail bike.

The most notable change made is the addition of a “Trail” category for complete mountain bikes, and mountain bike frames. After speaking with Kaz and the tech team, we moved all 120mm-150mm rear wheel travel bikes and frames to the new ‘Trail’ category to seed the category.

That said, we're not trying to establish a hard and fast rule of defining bikes by travel alone. Sellers should list bikes wherever they are most appropriate. Buyers, before rushing to flag ads you think are misplaced, please send the seller a note. We all want to make it easier for buyers to find what they are looking for and for sellers to collect their cash/doge/N64 games. If you're feeling particularly heated, please write up a proclamation as to why the Kona Process 111 should actually be in the Trail category, and then send it to Incognito Robin. He is eager to hear your feedback.

Thinking about gearboxes.

We gave Levy an opportunity to present a case for using “Downcountry” but it turns out the name is nothing but a conspiracy to sell more Pinkbike merch. Levy was waving angrily at the camera, but his tinfoil hat seemed to be interfering with the microphone signal. So we went ahead with ‘Trail’ which is familiar to casual and experienced mountain bikers alike. (and a little company called Google)

Now, commenters angry and armed with 800mm Chromag bars:
• No, this won’t cost you money.
• No, this is not a request from corporate overlords or prudish lawyers, motivated solely by boosting profit margins and mitigating liability.
• Yes, you will still be able to quickly find and haggle over a used and worn EXO+ Assegai
• Yes, you can still list your iPod and Zune 120 here

Still angry? Take a break and enjoy this totally unrelated song from David Bowie.

Thoughts? Ideas? Please comment below, or leave feedback in our dedicated BuySell feature request thread.

Affectionately,
Jake, not from State Farm

For those of us who live on the buy/sell area here, thank you for updating it.
  • 17 0
It is our home. Thank you
  • 2 0
Jake! What's up buddy! Nice work.
  • 55 0
Yea, pretty good so far but I think the removal of the rear shock sizing filter makes it harder to weed out the shocks you’re NOT looking for.
  • 19 0
@lindsayflowhan: agreed, filtering by i2i and stroke was brilliant
  • 6 2
for real, I'm liking most of these changes, however with how arbitrary the distinction between "trail" and "enduro" bikes can be, it'd be nice if there was still a way to browse both at once...
  • 20 0
@lindsayflowhan: those filters are back. Worry not.
  • 10 0
@thomas1965: you can, from the BuySell list view. When you do a search, you can select which categories you want to search from or browse in. You can select multiple.
  • 2 0
 @jake28: awesome!
  • 1 0
@jake28: wow somehow never figured that out, thanks!
  • 1 0
Glad to see that fixed all the errors that were made when switched things up a couple of weeks ago?

 Repost all button ?!@jake28:

I’m just impressed that you made an article about such a dry topic so entertaining. I clicked on two links and read all the way down to the signature line, which honestly might be a first for me. So good Jake, not from State Farm.

I wound read a monthly column called ‘Jake Explains Pinkbike.’ That was very well done.
  • 9 0
 Yup me too.
  • 100 0
Don't tempt me. It would be like drunk history: bicycle edition.
  • 39 0
@jake28: You're only digging yourself deeper... @jake28 now needs two regular columns, PB Explained and Drunk History: Bikes!
  • 16 0
@jake28: don't you threaten me with a good time
  • 4 1
@jake28: Don't threaten me with a good time
  • 4 0
@jake28: Do It! it’s an article on a mountain bike website, you only need to note sobriety level of it’s crafted while sober.
  • 9 0
I'll second the calls for more from Jake. This was good stuff. I'm still laughing. Well done sir!
  • 92 2
Glad we finally realized that a wheelset (without hubs) is not a wheelset, it's rims.
  • 9 1
Rims with hubs aren't a wheelset either.
  • 1 1
@nozes: there was never an option for that, nor is there now.
  • 5 0
@warmerdamj: buying rims is like buying a virtual wheelset, perfect for cubicle riders, reduces storage and gives them something to hang on the wall ... right alongside their PB team jersey
  • 61 0
It would be great to have the ability to filter on things like frame size on mobile, that's a key factor when browsing.
  • 59 1
I usually just hit the desktop version when in the buy/sell on mobile.
  • 45 0
I completely agree. Lack of a functional experience on mobile is a much bigger user issue than reworking frame categories. I appreciate that that's a much more involved development effort, but I hope they're actively working on it.
  • 25 0
 @emarquar: yup
  • 3 0
 @jake28: Awesome!!
  • 3 0
Or, you know, searching ALL the things from the first mobile page. Like Rockauto. I go to desktop version on mobile anyway, just saying.
  • 8 3
100% While I appreciate the functionality enhancements this continues to be a major bummer, particularly considering the bulk of casual internet users are on their mobile devices. Without being able to specify sizes, hub widths, wheels sizes, etc. basically makes Buy/Sell unusable on mobile, which honestly is pretty f-ing ridiculous in 2022.
  • 2 0
I wish I could up vote this a million times
  • 52 0
Any timeline on updating the mobile BuySell platform? Or am I forever doomed to scroll down to the "View Desktop Mode" and smash my sausage fingers against tiny text links for ants to get a usable website?
  • 51 0
No timeline, but it's top of the list. Sausage fingers are meant for pulling on brake levers.
  • 3 0
@jake28: this. Being able to search by size on mobile would be super neat.
  • 4 0
@jake28: did you fix the . Issue in search on mobile version? 27.5 comes up as 27 5 the search function for shock stroke ie. 230 x 65 never worked.
  • 2 0
 @taskmgr: not yet
  • 31 1
How about adding a seller rating system. That way the buyer can see the seller has a good history with the products they are selling. People can be leary about buying items when they know nothing about the seller.
  • 39 0
Can the rating system be indicated on an emoji scale please going all the way from turd to cat with love eyes
  • 13 1
That may kind of screw new sellers like myself though. Or ones who don't sell a ton of stuff (also like myself).

As a buyer I would love it though.
  • 11 0
Please do this. I got completely ripped off on the site and I would have liked to downvote the seller.
  • 9 0
And any person that is selling stocked items should fall under the store category.
  • 24 1
Hopefully, it will help to sell my Knolly Chilcotin 167 2022 Medium black with DYEDBro protector full FOX Factory
  • 5 0
If it is from 2022, shouldn't you just be riding it? Or was this a whoosh? Yes I'm really bad at this and things often go whoosh.
  • 1 0
@vinay: Second bike. Too much travel for me
  • 18 0
I wanna try that redalp so badly, does the chain slap itself? so many questions
  • 4 1
Im so fascinated by that redalp
  • 5 0
You'd slap yourself if you actually bought it.
  • 15 0
Can we just take a step back here and get some explanation about what overpowered shit-box cars you're referring to. A lot of folks are just waiting to judge you and Levy based on your automotive preferences.... I for one like to imagine Levy gets pretty excited about Alpha 164's, BMW 2002's, Volvo 850R's, Mk1 Golfs, and maybe Porsche 944 turbos. But that's fantasy 'Levy'... Probably real-world Levy gets through Costco quantities of Kleenex over anything that includes the words Cosworth or Cooper. Also, good work on the buy/sell, can't wait to see how many hits I get on my '99 Klein Mantra in the DH category!
  • 6 0
 I can add R5 turbo2 if needed
  • 24 0
Levy had, and I have, a Honda-powered classic Mini Cooper in the garage. Roof racks for bikes and torque-steer in both directions. I get hot and bothered over sleeper-status cars: LS-swapped Volvo wagons and the like.
  • 8 0
 @jake28: I dub thee 'K-swapping fun bois'
  • 9 0
@jake28: can you ad a section to sell said shitbox cars? Lets say a cut off at 1994, nothing newer and must have over 200K miles.. I am trying to offload a my swapped E30 because I would maybe rather deal with low balling PinkBikers than the usual meth heads on facebook marketplace.
  • 9 0
@nsmithbmx: Would you take a trade for a '99 Klein Mantra, a half eaten bag of Cheetos, the stylus from a Galaxy Note 7, and 2 pairs of Kirkland blue jeans (32x32)???
  • 1 0
@jake28: what happened to Levy's Mini Honda?
  • 6 0
 @nzandyb: I was in until the jeans. Sadly I'm a 32x31.
  • 2 0
Forget Levy, I had a 164 V6 and I drove it over 100'000miles, it was the best car ever. Not very fuel efficient though.
  • 4 0
@fracasnoxteam: R5 Turbos are my shit. Such a hilarious, ridiculous, undeniably cool vehicle.
  • 2 0
@jake28: if you want a real sleeper, drop a hyabusa motor with a turbski or two in that mini!. and also make it rear wheel drive like god intended....
  • 3 0
@fracasnoxteam: Saw a red R5 turbo 2 months ago in Vancouver. A few years ago i saw a Clio V6, Alpine A110, A310 and R5 Turbo near Whistler.

In Europe, i have an R5 alpine and i used to have a Megane 3 RS, i have to wait a few years to import one in BC.

JDM cars in BC are super cheap got an Evo 5 for $10k and my daily is a 330hp Subaru B4 RSK that i paid $5000 a while ago.
  • 10 0
@nsmithbmx: Tell you what, I'll cut them down to Jorts and throw in a compact disc copy of Jagged Little Pill by platinum-selling Canadian artist Alanis Morisette. FINAL OFFER.
  • 1 0
@jake28: You should check out the red Volvo 240 wagon that is parked next to Moja Coffee in North Van (around the corner from Endless Bikes and Bridge Brewing). Not exactly a sleeper with it's candy apple red paint job, chrome wheels, and massive blower sticking out of the hood off its small block chevy V8 but it sounds so good.
  • 1 0
 @jake28: Here's something for you then: m.youtube.com/watch?v=sGlBwK35imI
  • 1 0
@sunday06: He sold it to a guy in Whistler who had a WRX, he is a mountain biker too from what i remember.
  • 3 0
@Ba1rog: Really? $10k for an Evo5? So jealous of you Canadians.
  • 2 0
@solar-evolution: Now it is more like $30-40 cad, the evo 5 is a scalpel on corners so much fun and reliable compared to the sti. But i like both, especially the EJ207-208 sound when the turbo or 1st turbo is loading. Just hate my weak manual 5-speed, i need a new central differential Frown . Canada is lame with the 15 years import rule, i love my Renault Megane 3 RS i was destroying Porsches, M3-M4-M5 with her but i have to sell it since i move to Canada. Super reliable car, amazing chassis, suspensions and brakes.
  • 2 0
@Ba1rog: nice garage. Red turbo might be a 1. More chance to catch a dinosaurs than this in Canada!
  • 1 0
@nzandyb: I know what I have. If you have an original copy of No Doubt tragic kingdom on either CD or vinyl you have a deal.
  • 13 0
How about adding a "hardtail" section to both complete and frame only sections? I think that makes more sense than adding another FS category. It may not be a massive category, but I think we live in a day and age where there are more and more aggressive HT bikes out there.
  • 16 0
LOL, good payback for Incognito Robin. Well played PinkBike.
  • 2 0
 Be safe be well
  • 12 0
It would be great to be able to filter/exclude certain sellers.

When I look for components etc. near me 80% of the results are China based Ebay sellers with a distribution site in the Portland area that post 100's of items for sale that are actually not available for local pickup and often not even available for weeks since they are being shipped overseas:

Example: seller ronde-sport
  • 2 0
This^^^. If you are doing this as a side hustle, great. Just be in a separate category.
  • 3 0
THIS BIG TIME, I can not stand when I have to scroll through NOBL Wheels pages when I search for Chris King used wheels sets and these guys are advertising how they can build you a set with King hubs X5499 ads
  • 1 0
 +1000
  • 9 0
It would be great if the ad could show both the town name and state that the ad is in (for the US). I know the thumbnail says this info, but I often find myself having to go back or looking up where the town is.
  • 2 0
@jake28 - Yes Please add the state to the listing views seller profile, this should be an easy fix. Ever bought something in Springfield?
  • 11 0
All mountain is dead! Long live all mountain!
  • 11 0
What about mixed wheel bikes options?
  • 8 0
Came here to say that. Wheelsets and full bikes needs a mullet option. They are neither 29 nor 27.5 bikes...
  • 8 0
Thanks for the update. I am wondering if it’s possible to have a filter to show all the SOLD items. They would be good references for sellers and buyers.
  • 5 1
That would be cool only if you could see the price it went for instead of the original listing price. If someone waited two months to sell a dropper post listed at $180 and finally gave in and sold it for $120, it wouldn't be a great reference.
  • 4 0
@ct0413: you are definitely right. But, I feel the chance is slim for the buyer to update the final price. Having the original price is better than nothing.
  • 5 0
For the past couple of years the Change Region/Location option on the mobile page hasn't been working, Itd be nice to zero in on specific countries, provinces/states again (it used to work)... And frame sizing or measurements are not an option for the mobile site as well, which would be a nice thing to have, so I don't have to rely on a desktop to find specific parts or sizes (I want to find a 157 hub from the comfortable seat on the "thrown").
  • 3 0
Yes!! I distinctly remember doing this. It used to work just fine on mobile.
  • 2 0
This was the point I wanted to make - frustrating to randomly scan postings for nearby available items on Vancouver Island (or even BC) when I'm scrolling past hundreds of US postings
  • 3 0
 @shmarv:
I switch to desktop mode via the bottom at the very bottom of the page. But still a pain
  • 4 0
I just checked and the most hated feature is still there. In the mobile version I can't pick a smaller region than USA/CANADA to search for parts close to me. I can pick continents only.
  • 3 0
I'd be in favor of putting all pedal mountain bikes in one area and narrow it based on filters like travel. The trail/enduro distinction especially is so arbitrary. Categories should be:

A. Hardtails
B. Full suspension mountain bikes (allow user to pick range of travel).
C. Downhill Bikes
D. Fatbikes
E. Road/Gravel/CX Bikes
  • 4 0
Feature request: An "exclude" filter in addition to an "include" filter.

Why: So I can search for seatposts that are not Reverbs!
  • 1 0
Also bikes with pressfit bottom brackets and/or cables going through the headset...
  • 2 0
2 Things 1st - This probably affects no one but me but when i got and sort by country, Ireland, all of northern Ireland is left out. when people are listing, some list as eg down, Ireland. Some as Down, United kingdom and some as Down, Northern Ireland. When looking for a product can get a bit annoying at times. 2nd - Mobile App would be class. if for all of Pinkbike or just buy sell. if not maybe add in to the mobile version of the website more filters to narrow down your search rather than switching to desktop mode. Thanks
  • 5 0
for a post about a feature update, that was a very enjoyable read. well done sir
  • 2 0
That was a well written and entertaining update. Quite possibly the first time I skipped through the comments. Weird. I hope that Jake Not From State Farm gets to continue writing insightful and entertaining articles, complete with “unrelated” David Bowie videos.
  • 5 0
What about an offset filter for forks. This is a pretty big thing when searching forks. Please and thankyou.
  • 2 0
 Please this!
  • 2 0
Look, the Really Good Thing about the PB buy & sell is that the search function W O R K S .

This unlike a million other websites.
If I am interested in finding a 142 Hope rear hub, it’s exceptionally easy to apply filters and look at exactly that.
NOICE.
  • 2 0
Thanks for the minor improvements. However, the mobile version still does not have all the filtering options as the computer browser. I would like to be able to filter by country, wheel size etc.
  • 1 0
Not knowing it was "illegal" I posted a Want to Buy add for a Trek Farley Ex 9.8 in the Fat bike section and my add was removed by the "administrator". My suggestion to him was why not have a Want to Buy section in each category instead of throwing every Want to Buy in one category. Who wants to scroll through 512 wanted ads to see if someone wants your bike. BTW, someone did see my add in the few days that it was up and I got my Ex.
  • 4 0
Unless I’m missing something, you can’t filter by country on mobile, only continent, would be a good update please
  • 4 0
It would be great to have all the same filters that are on the desktop, on the mobile platform.
  • 1 0
 that's what I was thinking
  • 1 0
@Jake: how bout you include the wheel size and axle type boxes for Fat Bike Parts? Sometimes you gotta look in both Wheel and FBP cats but most people still post fb wheels under the FBP section, but filtering by axle size and rim diam would be nice. Thanks
  • 2 0
Are you mocking us? ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) ~ there is nothing wrong with wearing a tinfoil hat so long at it doesn't interfere with the MIPS function of my helmet!!

And thank you for the trail section ~ it's appreciated!
  • 3 0
Anyway for an alert system? So when that Girvin Titanium Flex Stem hits the market you are automatically sent an alert on your phone?
  • 1 0
@jake28 I think we can all agree here that your writing talents are completely wasted being not a front end facing pinkbike employee. Don't you want to go sit down with your boss and tell him that he's giving you a raise and in return you'll write two articles a month on whatever you like...
  • 1 0
Hi Jake, Please bring back VOD. I know there are lots of videos to watch on the main page, but now I never know where to spend the 5 minutes during my morning poop. VOD used to be perfect for that, as the lack of selection made for less stress, and therefore a better bathroom experience. Thank you.
  • 1 0
The biggest thing missing is a flagging button for miscategorized post. It so annoying when you're trying to look through a list of let's say DJ frames and seeing multiple ads for XC or DH bikes, because people think it's gonna sell faster if they post it in every category... it would be nice to flag them for removal...
  • 4 0
Update the mobile version! Or a free Pinkbike app would be cool.
  • 4 0
 mixed wheel 29/27.5 category please
  • 1 0
This! Very hard to buy/sell a mullet bike when there is no cat for it. Also mullet bike cat in the wheels/rims section would be awesome.
  • 2 0
I really wish it was easier to filter for sold listings so I can figure out how much my bikes are worth before listing them. Google only sometimes picks up old listings.
  • 2 0
Maybe yall should add a spaceship category for Levi. Who knows maybe an alien will have to sell their ship after missing some payments on their 2003 Honda Civic.
  • 4 0
This is one of the best written articles on PB in a long time.
  • 1 0
I would love to see an update to the mobile buy and sell to update it from the absolute garbage it is at the moment. I love it on PC and I know I can change to desktop mode...but in the end, it sucks...fix it! Razz
  • 2 0
Now Ibis really need to bump up travel 3 mm on Ripmo to be able to race in EWS. Happy I just sold my Ripley, don't want to have two trailbikes.
  • 3 0
 Thanks for the updates!

How about Mullet options in the wheels and rims category?
Agreed fork offset would be great too.
  • 2 0
 Fork offset would be great!
  • 1 1
Not a big fan of the changes. What's worse, is someone is getting paid to oversee and monitor the classifieds section. Too many topics that had additional dropdowns have been removed. I don't want to necessarily look at every 31.6 dropper post, but I might want to look at a variety of them, to find a deal. Additionally, can we have some type of seller/buyer feedback section added? I have had a few deals that were not so wonderful and a few whom I would love everyone to know about and buy stuff from. I feel that instead of progressing forward, we went back before the last update and made things more difficult. Thanks.
  • 1 0
Sorry but considering how brutally bad your classified ux is on mobile, this seems like a useless move. Make the stupid system actually function, then worry about unimportant details like this.
  • 1 0
You say Bowie is totally irrelevant but YOU ARE WRONG! This has everything to do with change! BTW thanks for the song. It brought me back to calmer times.
  • 2 0
I thought you agreed to copy the UI from the used car market in grand tourismo 4? #imsodonerightnow
  • 3 1
How about searching in only your own country?
Canada/USA is a big difference in price and shipping.
  • 4 0
click "country" and you can search whatever country you would like to. I hope this helps and answers your question
  • 1 0
@moe-zee: When I chose country it gives me the option of Cansda/USA. Basically only option is North America.
Unless I'm doing something wrong. (I use my phone so that might be why)
  • 1 0
@flyin-ryan: you are searching by region, not country. It’s a different option.
  • 1 0
 @sino428: Still only Canada/USA as a choice.
I don't have the App or Desktop just the .com
version. It's all good. I'm over it.
  • 2 1
Canada is the 51st state, eh?
  • 3 1
I want an option where I only see what's for sale locally. I hate PayPal and buying stuff I can't see in person first.
  • 4 0
Did you try the "Near Me" filter? Might not show on your phone, but works great on Desktop.
  • 1 0
On the desktop version you can search locally with a distance radius from your location.
  • 1 0
@als802: never tried on a desk top. Thanks for this info
  • 3 0
Hang on, where the f*ck else would the process 111 go?
  • 3 0
disappointed there's actually NO redalps for sale on the B&S.
  • 1 0
I saw only 2 of them in the portes du soleil ( Champery and Chatel). They are super rare bikes, i would not confident riding this bike in Champery haha.
  • 2 0
Can we have a £ or € sign instead of a $ sign when the listing has that currency selected?
  • 3 0
Yes. You may have either of those only if you live in the US.
  • 1 0
We'd be CHuFfed to bits if they supported the Swiss Franc...
  • 1 0
Is like to be able to set the region and have it saved instead of having to put it in all the time . And a quick link for sizes on the mobile app would also be nice
  • 2 0
So THIS is why clicking the "road bikes" link took you to fat bikes last week. I just thought it was subliminal messaging.
  • 1 0
Glad y'all added Vintage Bikes and Vintage Frames before, but a Vintage Parts section would be really helpful. Where else am I going to sell my mint condition Nokia Gazza 3s?
  • 2 0
Good stuff, thanks. Any chance we can get the filters added to the mobile version?
  • 1 0
A rating system for sellers would be a great feature. I’ve purchased from some great sellers but I never knew it until after the sale.
  • 1 0
Appreciate the effort and cleanup! Would love to filter by frame size as well as country and region on mobile if you guys are able to get around to it.
  • 3 0
 Should have kept
Air / Coil Rear Shock categories
  • 1 0
@jake28 different kind of request, but could you change the behaviour of links so that you dont leave the site ehen you click on something. open a tap instead
thanks
  • 1 0
Lauf Fork neither option for those and seat clamps are not droppers. It seems the old adage "if it ait broke" never got stateside
  • 1 0
Soooo, still no mobile support. Doesn’t matter what categories you choose, no location or any specification for that matter.
  • 1 0
Just having the buy/sell forum period is a gift and much appreciated. Format it however the fu*# you see fit. If anyone wants to complain they can got to eBay, LOL.
  • 2 1
@jake when will clicking on a link inside an article open a new tab/browser?
  • 2 0
“Hello Jake from Pinkbike…if that’s your reeeeeal name!”
  • 1 0
 Jakebot
  • 1 0
What???? No comments on how a Kona process 111 is a trail bike…..It was though…
  • 1 0
The inly problem i have with buysell right now is the lack of filters when viewing the site from a mobile phone.
  • 1 0
Jake, not from State Farm - you do not sound hideous. Are you in fact not wearing khakis?
  • 1 0
Do away with the Moblie site. It’s horrible, phones and tablets run the desktop site just fine.
  • 2 0
Why do you need a Zune when your shitbox has a perfectly good Blaupunkt?
  • 1 0
Can you create a repost all button please Reposting over 100 adds takes like 30 min on mobile lol
  • 3 0
You’re running a full blown business on a free platform but you can’t be bothered to invest 3mins into it.
  • 2 0
 Hahahaha @speed10:
  • 1 0
Every 2 days 3-40 mins adds up a lot over a month
When there could simply be a repost all button is all I’m saying …@speed10:
  • 1 0
Average 6-7 hours a month I could save for acually working on bikes @speed10:
  • 1 0
@Mtber125: why not buy a laptop and right it off as a business expense? Or go on Fiver and have someone right you a script to automate the process. I wanna help ya out
  • 1 0
It's nice. I simply check trail frames and enduro frames when shopping for a Ripmo V2. They're in both.
  • 2 0
Classic Minis aren't overpowered my dude
  • 2 0
Classic Mini's with a Civic SI engine can be though.
  • 2 0
Please bring back coil and air shocks. Used that category separator daily
  • 2 0
You can filter on coil or air, so the functionality is still there, just not on the front page.
  • 2 0
