Pinkbike's DH Fantasy League: Get Your Team On The Line for Round 1

It's back! It’s almost time to dust off the old armchair for some virtual team management. After a short hiatus in 2023, we’re excited to announce that Pinkbike's DH Fantasy League is coming back for 2024, presented by the good people at Five Ten.

With a fictional budget of $1.5 million you will choose your ultimate team of 6 riders (4 men, 2 women) and go to battle in the Pinkbike's DH Fantasy League. Show off your skills in choosing the best riders for all 7 rounds of the 2024 UCI World Cup, plus the 2024 UCI World Championships, and your team will score points based on how your riders performed.

Dynamic Rider Pricing
A big change for this year is dynamic rider pricing. Riders’ salaries will start the season based on their historical results and some insider insights, but those salaries will get updated after each round. Riders who are having a good season will rise in price over time, and riders who are struggling will drop in price.

In previous years there’s been a gradual convergence of teams as the best value riders became obvious throughout the season. Now with dynamic rider pricing, fantasy team managers will have to be more savvy as the leading riders price themselves out of their teams. This will also help more divergent strategies emerge—will you field strong mid-pack riders, or will you go all-in on an expensive top rider?

When rider prices change, if your team's budget gets pushed beyond the salary cap, your most expensive rider will be replaced with the least expensive rider. If your team is still over the budget cap, your next most expensive rider will be swapped for the least expensive rider. You can then choose to go and reallocate budget and make changes as needed. Of course, players will still have time to update their teams to their preferences in the lead-up to each round of qualifiers—they’ll just need to stay under the $1.5 million dollar cost cap. We’re excited for people to dig deeper into the field of riders, assess historical performances at specific venues, and overall fall further down the rabbit hole of DH nerding.

Bragging rights are the most important part of Pinkbike's DH Fantasy League and you can join up to 2 mini-leagues and compete against your friends. Each race round will have feature prizing and then at the end of all 8 races, we crown the overall Fantasy Downhill Champion and present the Grand Prize! The League is open to everyone, but prizes are only available for contestants from the US, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK.

Sound good? Build your team today!

Prizes
The League is open to everyone, but prizes are only available for contestants from the US, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK. If the top contestant is not from one of these countries, prizes will go to the next eligible person.

Grand Prize / Season Overall

At the end of the season the overall Fantasy Downhill Champion will get a $5000 USD cash prize*. Yep, cold hard cash to spend on whatever you want. Should there be multiple teams with the same total cumulative points scores, the grand prize will be awarded to whoever scored the highest points in round race #1. See Official Rules for details.

In addition to the Grand Prize, $5000 USD will be donated by Five Ten in honour of the Grand Prize winner to their charity of choice of Grow Cycling Foundation, Trash Free Trails or the Athlete Recovery Fund. See Official Rules for details.

Round Prizes / Every World Cup + World Champs

If you have the top team of the week, you'll take home two fresh pairs of shoes and an athlete-signed jersey. Each race round will have a prize for the Top Fantasy Team of that round. Should there be multiple teams with the same total points for that race round, the prize for that round will be awarded to whoever scores highest points in the tie breaker round. See Official Rules for details.

IMPORTANT: To maximize your chances to win the Grand Prize, we recommend you have your team created by the time Qualifying starts for the first round on May 4, 2024 and then before Qualifying at each consecutive round. You will want to maximize your points score and have your team present for all races.

2024 Race Schedule:

May 3-5: UCI DH World Cup #1 - Fort William, Scotland
May 17-19: UCI DH World Cup #2 - Bielsko Biala, Poland
June 7-9: UCI DH World Cup #3 - Leogang, Austria
June 14-16: UCI DH World Cup #4 - Val di Sole, Italy
July 5-7: UCI DH World Cup #5 - Haute-Savoie, France
August 28-September 1: UCI Mountain Bike World Championships – Pal Arinsal/Vallnord, Andorra
September 6-8: UCI DH World Cup #6 - Loudenvielle, France
October 4-6: UCI DH World Cup #7 - Mont-Saint-Anne, Canada

Good luck!

I guess.. time to put away my pitchfork? No, maybe I'll just lower it.
Good work Pinkbike.

With no reasonably inexpensive way to watch live...I guess I'll just have to watch the highlights on Mondays to see how my team does.
  • 6 3
 Won't there be live timing?
  • 9 3
@vinay: You must've missed the parts where he wrote "watch" and "see"?
  • 7 2
@mi-bike: No, in the context of this article (regarding the Fantasy League) he knows the result as soon as the live timing is in. Watching the highlights nor the live video stream will tell him more than that.

The dynamic pricing is a good idea but the rules around it exceeding salary cap doesn't make sense and needs a rethink.

If the rider value increases so the team is valued above 1.5m then surely that is just good planning to pick well priced riders? removing the highest value rider penalises tactical picks?

For example if a rider currently injured is cheap now, I may sacrifice round 1 points to have them in my team for future rounds
  • 14 0
F1 fantasy has a system where if a divers price goes up and you already had him, you get to keep him and the value of your team increases permanently even if you swap the driver out.
  • 1 0
Kind of depends whether the riders receive a bonus when they get good results and get a pay cut when they do poorly, get injured or damage their bike.
  • 10 2
I think there is still plenty of opportunity for tactical choices under our system. With the 1.5m team price cap for everyone and the dynamic pricing, you will need to change your team for every round and make picks that you think will do well for that specific race.

We have done modelling based on past season data and with the dynamic pricing, there can be some interesting results. One example of how it might work is if you picked a rider for $25000 who then went on to do very well in the opening rounds their price will go up significantly. This could make you have to choose whether you can afford a higher-cost rider in your team.

After our testing, we found there are always some hidden picks that people will need to do some research and follow results closely to get a good return on the rider cost.
  • 7 0
@danielomeara: Yea but in F1 you have limited trades, here you can swap out as much as you want with no penalty.
  • 2 0
@edspratt: I initially didn't like the salary cap with dynamic pricing, but the more I think about it, the more some salary cap makes sense. Given the initial prices are set on last years results, it would seem that the best strategy would be to just pick mostly top riders who were injured last year and watch them quickly shoot up well past the capped level. Without the cap, we then just have a bunch of teams who can't make any moves as they'd be lowering their value greatly. Makes for great initial strategizing, but not to great longterm play.

With the salary cap, people are going to have to at least choose who they think will do atypically well at each round and the winner won't be determined by who picked the returning or breakout stars before the beginning of the season.

I would consider letting there by some flexibility. Like you have 1.5 million of purchasing power, but you have a bit of wiggle room with the dynamic pricing. Like your team value could go up to 1.6 or 1.7 million in value as your own riders increase. It will be really annoying when a $25k rider takes a top 30 and gets bumped to 50k and it triggers an automatic sell off of your $750k rider if you don't notice in time. It would also reward people for investing in those good picks. If they wanted to change out people, though, they'd still be bound by the 1.5 million purchasing cap.
  • 3 0
@edspratt: I get what you're saying, but I still think it's not the right excecution.

For example early last season I'm sure the likes of Cabirou, Davis and Craik would have been cheap. If I got them in when they weren't popular picks but they do well and increase in value, I shouldn't be forced to remove them.
  • 3 0
@mark-88: Thing is that their value in the PB marketplace isn't based on how popular these riders are but just on how they ended their previous season. With the previous "static" pricing, people could always pick up a good rider for cheap regardless of whether it is early in the season or later on when they're already proven to be good. With the new dynamic pricing, you actually get to reap the rewards of early clever pick and will maintain that lead as others can't jump on the same train as easily after that first race. The other thing I like is that people can't just rest on a winning team as it will become too expensive. So people will continue to have to be creative.

Maybe just give it a year to see how it works out and whether the fantasy competition suffered one way or another.
  • 2 0
@vinay: You don't get to reap the reward as after one good result that previously cheap rider's value will increase and cause someone to be removed from your team.

The dynamic pricing is better than static pricing, I am in agreement there.

I'll be playing regardless, but doesn't mean we can't provide feedback.
  • 2 0
@mark-88: Of course. Just because our opinions differ doesn't mean that I don't value yours. Heck, yours may actually be more relevant as you'll actually be in it to possibly win something. Good luck!
  • 1 2
As is often the way with these things, the first iteration of dh fantasy was by far the best.
  • 1 1
@edspratt: are we able to create sub-leagues to directly compete against friends?
  • 1 0
@Kookonabike: Did you even read the article? Yes.
  • 2 0
 @zazu218: hah! I don’t know how I missed that.
  • 23 0
This sounds really great, the whole thing, really well thought through. Thanks for the work that had gone into this!
  • 17 5
I live in a relatively poor country compared to the select ones where one can actually get FL rewards.
Still can't stop wondering, are 5 to 10 bucks a month preventing you guys from watching your favorite sport?

It's okay to dislike the seeding system or semi / final run confusion, but a couple months' worth of sport TV coverage will cost you what... a pair of brake pads at best.

Man up and stop complaining.
  • 6 2
It's not just the $10/month. It the $10/month for no Rob warner, confusing semi finals that ruin the finals, etc.. I would almost guaranteed have paid if they just turned what Redbull was doing into a subscription. But a worse product than what I was watching for free a couple years ago? Nope, not getting my money.
  • 1 0
@kookseverywhere: lol. Imagine being this fragile about your favorite sport especially considering how good the racing was last year. Oh and let me guess…in the RB days you also complained.
  • 16 1
This is great and I'm glad that DH is back; but XC Fantasy...or nah?
  • 37 0
We are just focusing on DH Fantasy this year, if everything goes well we can look at XC for next year.
  • 9 0
@edspratt: I'm gonna hold you to it. Kidding of course. This must be a ton of work for PB and I'm certainly glad to see at one fantasy league back.
  • 10 1
@edspratt: Introduce the Enduro fantasy league while you still can. You blink, it is gone.
  • 8 0
Thought those were state identifiers all of a sudden and ya'll were from Florida.
  • 6 3
Miss that like the flower misses the sun. Love DH, but the XC fantasy league was awesome.
  • 2 0
@edspratt: we just need it for gravel racing
  • 10 0
Oh cool we get little Fantasy League tags next to our names! Smile
  • 10 0
Ah, so you're my enemy now Smile .
  • 8 0
Can't wait to play fantasy league while not watching the races because I am not sending money to discovery
  • 2 1
Its 6€ a month in germany. And you get many other sports too. I think its great, wouldnt pay 20€ though.
  • 1 0
@Korbi777: Not sure about Germany but I think it is more than it was last year, isn't it? I think I paid about 30 euros and got something back at the end as they shut down the service.
  • 2 0
 @vinay: i pay 6€ for discovery+
  • 1 0
@Korbi777: I meant to say I paid that at once and got something back when the shut down the service. Per month it might indeed have been around those 6 euros indeed, maybe slightly less. I don't recall it was Discovery + though, it was something like GMNC+ or something like that, have to look it up.
  • 2 1
I'm just going to opt out of both. Fantasy made watching that much more exciting. But it can't turn a turd into watchable media.
  • 5 0
Hell yeah! I am a little bummed about the valuation system. It seems impossible to build a team with more than two true contenders. I remember fantasy enduro in the day made it possible to field a few good riders on your team.
  • 12 1
I hope people will enjoy the valuation system once it gets going. Nobody can run away with it through lucky choices early. Now you'll have to do what team managers actually do, making some hard choices and predictions and digging into some of the data. It was a lot of fun when we tested simulated seasons, but admittedly we are giant nerds.
  • 5 1
@brianpark: I think the system is cool. There is a bit less weight on the price tag PB put on these riders at the beginning and requires fantasy-competitors stay on their toes as a clever "winning team" can't be kept together either (as it would become too expensive). I don't care too much about the competition element (I am not too competitive plus there is nothing to win for me anyway) so I just assembled a team of riders I like regardless of whether they'd win.
  • 1 0
@brianpark: Well there goes any chance of my scrubby ass doing well haha. I do like the weekly updates as well.
  • 8 3
Why is the Fantasy League only open to " legal residents of Australia, Canada (except the Province of Québec), Germany, United Kingdom, and 50 United States and District of Columbia"? Seems a bit sad to exclude almost the whole EU... (and many more parts of the world)
  • 8 0
 Gambling laws
  • 1 3
Maybe they don't want contestants from countries hosting a WC round because of possible sabotage (and they expect a Scexit before May). Would still exclude quite a few countries indeed but judging by their rules page, it seems like quite a bitch to work through all the legal stuff so they just stopped when time ran out. Not worth the hassle especially as chances are an EU citizen might still reject the award if they'd win it because of all the customs that need to be paid.
  • 4 0
They are thinking ahead of their soon to be chosen new president. With his administration Russia will be free to invade, probably Germany and the UK will survive.
  • 1 0
@pmhobson: But gambling is much less regulated here than in the US?
  • 8 3
What a bunch of fucking whiners you all are. You all bitch when there's no fantasy then you bitch about the rules when there is.
  • 7 1
 @warmerdamj stop whining
  • 5 1
"prizes are only available for contestants from the US, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK" - I;ll sure as hell whine about that!
  • 4 0
Discrimination I tell you, if by some miracle I won, my country doesn't qualify for the prize. In past years fantasy league has been a good way to jinx my favorite riders so if I play this year choose fast juniors mainly.
  • 3 0
From the "how to" page it appears that only results in the finals count, right? This makes the semis even more irrelevant to me than they already were! Maybe the UCI should take note...
  • 7 0
 Thank you!
  • 1 4
What are you thanking them for? Your country, as well as mine, is not eligible for the prizes: "prizes are only available for contestants from the US, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK"
  • 8 0
@FredFreeRideGang: It´s just a game, I don´t care about the prizes, I am glad someone (I guess Ed) will put their time into making it happen
  • 1 0
@bok-CZ: Yeah, I guess you're right. It's not like I ever win anything anyways lol. My wife was getting close thou, one year she was 19th at some point Big Grin
  • 1 0
@FredFreeRideGang: I would steel her account Big Grin Anyway if you want it a bit more spicy, there is always chance for some dumb bets with friends
  • 3 1
Looking at rider pricing and flat out saying THAT needs a rethink: $750k for a top shelf rider--a full $200k increase!?!!! WTF?!?!! That makes it insanely difficult to get more than one of our 6 riders on the box. Picking 2 top shelf riders left me with $10k remaining. Add in dynamic pricing and its going to make picking a team an exercise in mediocrity.
  • 2 0
Yeah seems like an exercise in choosing either one elite male or female then hope the rest of your team makes it through to the finals.
  • 3 0
Yes, you're going to have to look outside the top 10 and make some tough choices. Razz
  • 9 6
1.5 Million is not enough. You can pick 1 top contender and a bunch of hopefuls. 2 million would have been a better budget and allow for a better mix of racers.
  • 11 0
The budget is tight for round one. As prices change through the season riders you might not be able to pick now may become affordable.
  • 1 2
@edspratt: Welcome back to the team, Wyn.
  • 16 0
The whole point is that people will have to make hard choices and research deeper into the field as the top riders price themselves out of your budget! Hoping this makes it more exciting as the rounds go deeper. We've done a bunch of simulated seasons and it's been super interesting!
  • 8 0
With 2 mil, everyone is gonna pick similar people, no? Pick two of Amaury/Loic/Finn/Jackson for every round and you're gonna do okay. People with more knowledge of ALL the athletes have a better chance at winning with a lower budget as you have to know what the riders are doing outside of the top 10. Also, EVERYONE is playing with 1.5 million so it's an even playing field that way... not like someone else is spending more than you.
  • 1 0
@brianpark: @tvan5: Understood. I think I b1tched about the same thing last year, when in reality you just need to know who is a value with upside. Kinda like my memestock empire. Fluctuating valuations will def make it different this time. Doubt that many people slept on RP this round.
  • 3 0
@suspended-flesh: previous years have been annoying to me when it becomes clear who's fast for the season, and then only the few people who chose them early on are in the running as everyone's strategies converged. This year I think we will see a lot of divergent strategies and different ways to take the win.
  • 1 0
@brianpark: why do the men get points for top 30 ( final) but the women get points to top 15 when only 10 make the final?
  • 1 0
@edspratt: fair few first year elites not on the list which I was hoping would be available.
  • 2 0
@Platt1984: We have added the top three Juniors moving to Elite this year for the first round. After each round, we will add any riders who scored points in the previous round.
  • 1 0
 @edspratt: ok thanks
  • 5 4
Ha ha don’t feel so bad being a kiwi when even the French are getting excluded too! Guess everyone knows nobody OUTSIDE of US, UK, Australia, Canada & Germany are interested in DH….Does this mean there are only riders from those countries available to put on your teams??
  • 1 0
Surely you know someone living in Aus that the prize could be wired to? Temporary Aussie address? Wink
  • 4 0
"The League is open to everyone, but prizes are only available for contestants from the US, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK."

You can enter and you can finish first, but no $$$. That sucks but then who is actually playing DH fantasy for the prize money?
  • 6 0
 Mic drop
  • 2 0
 Mike Levy I got you
  • 4 0
I can't understand why some participants from EU countires can win the prize and others not...makes no sense!
  • 2 0
Because eu conttires have there own laws regarding sweepstakes.
  • 4 0
Would be interesting if the budgets were more in line with what racers actually get paid.
  • 3 1
So, if you are still searching for other European countries on the map, it's easy since you already found Germany: the others are all around Germany.
I need new biking shoes.
Cheers from France.
  • 3 0
Amaury Pierron not in the list of male riders. Any particular reason? As far as I know he's in Commeçal Mucoff for the 2024 season...
  • 5 1
At $180 to watch the races I doubt many will see the actual races... BS
  • 2 0
Is it that expensive in Canada?
Here it’s 60 Euros (CAD 88.-) or 40 Euros (CAD 58.-) if you can stand the advertising.
Easy decision for me, watching the entire season for less than a set of new tires.
  • 2 0
@FuzzyL: Yes, so far $180 is our cheapest option. Only potion that I am aware of actually.
  • 5 0
Consider it an investment to make 5k.
  • 4 0
 $4/month paid VPN option
  • 2 0
@cky78: Isn’t there a monthly subscription, maybe? Since the DH season only runs from May 04 to October 05 I just realized I could spend even less - however, I also watch the road racing and cyclocross, so am fine to subscribe the whole year.
  • 1 0
@FuzzyL: Where do you watch it?
  • 5 1
The prize for winning fantasy 2024 should be an all expenses paid subscription to watch bikes in 2025. That's worth some serious coin.
  • 1 0
@cky78: what is the way to watch DH now in Canada?
  • 1 0
 @Fraenksen: Discovery+
  • 1 0
 @nicholkid: FLO Sports @ $30/month
  • 1 0
@cky78: hmmm way too much, I'll try my luck on buff streams
  • 3 0
Bruni from France - France not included. Holl from Austria - Austria not included. Seems fair...
  • 4 0
Great work PB, stoked to have this back for 2024
  • 4 0
Hell yea! This is amazing Smile Love it!
  • 4 0
So NZ and 90% of Europe is ineligible for the prize then? What BS!!!
  • 5 3
"The League is open to everyone, but prizes are only available for contestants from the US, Australia, Canada, Germany and the UK." .... why?
  • 4 0
 Looking at you @gmcgurk.

Glad this came back. 2022 was such a fun season with fantasy league and the schedule starting in March. Something was clearly missing last year.
  • 3 2
I'm just feeling grumpy on a Monday. Racing was great last year, just a shame about all the chopping and changing with how to watch it. Can't be arsed this year.
  • 2 1
Your loss. The only sport I care about on TV-net.
  • 3 0
Hey there is great news! I really missed it last year.
  • 2 0
I wont watch a single race but ill be damned if i don't make a fantasy team!
  • 2 0
Paid for gcn+ last year. Still figuring how to or worth it this year in New Zealand
  • 2 0
Why aren't the cleats in the picture slammed to the bottom of the cleat channel? Must of been an XC'er who drew that...
  • 2 0
Ok so the budget is 1.5 but Pene is over 500k? LOL! These values need some adjustment.
  • 2 0
Medical sign by Goldstone. I haven’t read that he was injured for Ft Bill.
  • 1 0
He crashed at Hardline Tasmania. Maybe not sure yet to be able to ride at Fort William.
  • 1 0
@Mightyfirelord: that seems odd though. Not one word from Jackson/Santa Cruz , but Pinkbike put him out anyway.
Gwin is confirmed not going to FT Bill but no medical marker on him.
  • 1 0
@juanargent: He got knee surgery. That injury ended up being worse than they thought it was. I'd be amazed if the kid raced. He's an amazing guy and he's young so he's going to heal fast... but still. He'd be showing up with zero saddle time.
  • 2 0
Nice. Still not clear how to actually watch...
  • 3 1
Please don't tell me this is the April 1 prank that got posted early.
  • 2 0
 EDR fantasy league? (sad lol)
  • 2 0
Really stoked to see pinkbike bring this back!!! On theracecompanion.com I'm going to be adding in Enduro fantasy so we can follow along.
  • 3 0
@kgassewitz: so it’s you we have to thank! Thank you!!

 Spot the pierron mistake lol
  • 2 0
Can you please add Ella Conollly? I have a feeling
  • 1 0
Do I let the rest of you have a chance or shall I go for two overalls in a row hmm…
  • 1 0
Why still 4 men, 2 women? Can we not have 3 men, 3 women, think there is more scope for variation in the women's field
  • 1 0
What is the difference in count on riders in the finals?
  • 2 0
Some of that pricing is just ridiculous. Myriam Nicole 100k v holl at 750k
  • 2 0
Sounds like there are deals to be had.
  • 1 0
Watched FK all DH last year so haven't kept up with who's fast. Just picked my faves an had £$£$ left over Big Grin
  • 1 0
If I can't collect the prizes when I win, why should I bother taking part in the fantasy league?
  • 2 0
 I am stoked!
  • 2 0
 Some good news!
  • 2 0
 Sam Hill was a bargain.
  • 3 0
Or a waste of money. He's motocrossing, mate.
  • 2 0
@handynzl: Money? I'm not spending money there nor will I be able to win anything (because of where I live) so I just pick the riders I like, not necessarily those who stand a fair chance of winning (or even competing).
  • 1 0
Yeah, great news. In this case, being German is not too much of a problem.
  • 1 0
Those cleats would definitely be set further back than that
  • 2 0
 oh, no EnDuRo?
  • 1 0
Up and at emm …some banging riders this year.
  • 1 0
 A WC in Poland, interesting!
  • 1 0
April 1st is still two works away
  • 1 0
... Except Québec, but I'll play anyway!!!
  • 1 0
 Dynamic pricing, just like Wendy’s!
  • 1 0
Adding juniors would mix things up.
  • 2 0
We talked about adding juniors. Depending on how racing shakes out for 2025 I'd love to see teams be made up of 2 men, 2 women, 2 juniors (1 male 1 female).
  • 1 0

Valentina Roa Sanchez is my ace in the hole !
  • 2 0
LOL! She's currently on my team as well. My big question is.... is Atherton racing...
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: i hope not. when Rachel competes the women's races are boring
  • 2 0
@blacktea: I think it's the opposite. With the field it is right now it's essentially Holl and everyone else. Rachel at least opens the door to another winner. Only way Holl loses right now is if she crashes.

Tahnee is hurt and hasn't been the same for quite some time. Pom Pom same deal. Marine is working her way back into form but she hasn't been a legit threat for awhile. Camile depending on the technicality and the conditions but a dry fort is too fast. Holl runs like 3-5 mph higher traps. Nina can put one together.

But for the most part it's like.... watching Jett Lawrence.

@onemanarmy: in any case, in my opinion, Valentina can do very well for several reasons. She's very motivated, she's a quiet girl and her mind helps her stay focused, the world of dh in Latin America is in turmoil and it means she's training well. Good luck with your team Smile

You can watch the races, you just don't want to pay to watch the races. There's a big difference.
