Police Called to Scott Sports Headquarters as CEO Dispute Continues

Police were reportedly called to Scott Sports Headquarters on Wednesday afternoon after a dispute between managers following ongoing issues after a new CEO was appointed last week.

The corporate drama at Scott Sports continues this week as DayFR Euro reports that several vehicles belonging to Fribourg police were spotted parked outside the Scott Sports headquarters in Givisiez on Wednesday Afternoon. Fribourg police spokesperson Bertrand Ruffieux told DayFR Euro: "Nothing serious happened. We intervened in a civil matter, a dispute between managers. In this type of case, the police are called to the scene to find a way to open a discussion, and for people to understand each other. But there are no injured or anyone arrested."

This is happening against the backdrop of an ongoing rift between (previous?) CEO Beat Zaugg and the new appointment by majority shareholder Youngone Corp. After a press release announcing Juwon Kim as the new CEO, Beat Zaugg told Bicycle Retailer on Tuesday: "This announcement was made to destabilize the company and its employees." In a response to Zaugg's statement, the Youngone Corp said: "We understand that it may be difficult for Mr. Zaugg to accept his termination (given his long-standing role as CEO). But this is ultimately irrelevant as a matter of law: the ultimate decision body of a company is the board of directors and the board is clearly entitled to terminate the employment with the CEO."

The report from DayFR Euro connects the police presence to the CEO replacement affair, but we have not been able to independently verify that.

We have contacted relevant parties at Scott Sports and Youngone for comment and will provide an update when we have more information.

FYI being a police officer isn't even considered a dangerous profession if you look at the fatalities per 100,000 employees (standard report). The defund campaign was absolutely idiotic. Yes, get some justice reform and change some laws but take away cops when we need them most? Good luck with that.
  • 19 4
@ATXZJ: >The defund campaign was absolutely idiotic

Hardly. Law enforcement is typically the #1 spend in a city budget. American cities are literally police departments that also fund roads, education, etc. Statistically spending more on law enforcement compared to social programs doesn't actually make a city safer. Social programming that lifts people out of poverty is proven time and time again to reduce crime unlike violent tactics from militarized police.

Defund the Police wasn't about abolishing police, it was about moving some of their exorbitant budget to programs that can improve public safety and streamling police operations to violent crime.
  • 13 0
@ATXZJ: Police spending in the US is really weird. Why do they have the budget for lots of officers and vast amounts of military equipment, but no money for any kind of decent qualification? Training and education programs appear to be almost nonexistent in many states.
  • 4 3
@ATXZJ: yes, it was all politics and pandering to the people with the worst and naive ideas.
  • 20 2
@Ttimer: oh there is money for training and education, it's just that de-escalation tactics, empathy, and community-building aren't taught. Instead the training emphasizes how dangerous the job is and how everyone is trying to kill you at all costs. Cops are trained to be on high alert at all times and think of themselves as enforcers and superior to the citizens that pay their salary. It's eye-opening to see the curriculum and how far-right instructors have hijacked training budgets to push right-wing messaging, fearmongering, and othering.

They're constantly taught that their life is in danger every time they step out of a vehicle and they act accordingly despite the fact that no statistics actually support this attitude. As such, you end up with cops taking justice into their own hands.

Then you look into the fact that many individuals that are deemed too unstable for enlisted military service are welcomed into police forces . . . it's a recipe for psychotic individuals with God complexes to terrorize the streets.

@GTscoob: keep in mind the US has spent trillions since the 1960s on the War on Poverty, similar to the War on Drugs we seem to be losing these wars lol. Endless spending on nice feelings and good intentions doesn't seem to pan out too often. Obviously the far left is nuts but I was down for the defund the police movement. Seems most of the cities who did Defund then ended up refunding their cops because of people dissatisfied with crime. Now the big problem with both our police and military is they can't get people to join in the numbers desired lol. What a shitshow..
  • 9 2
@DylanH93: Ok, so people were dissatisfied with crime. Understandably so. But does more police in its current US implementation actually prevent crime? All statistics I know say they don’t. The main purpose of more police on the streets seems to be good intentions and nice feelings. What the professionals like to call security theatre.
What does prevent crime, and that has been proven out for at least a century in most societies and tons of studies, is social security and income equality.
  • 5 5
@Ttimer: What "vast military equipment' are you talking about? A rifle? Body armor? Most agencies have zero military equipment. Perception is often greater than reality with that issue. Keep in mind that public safety budgets are based on 24/7/365 coverage with minimum staffing requirements. Doesn't matter if it's Police, Fire or EMS. Training requirements vary greatly from state to state and agency to agency. We don't have a national police force so there is no standard curriculum for the whole country.

@Ttimer: No police in its current US implementation doesn't prevent crime, it's become a total joke. Hence why we should just drop it and move onto elected sheriffs. Let people vote for the level of law enforcement they'd like, it would vary a ton throughout the country. It was working for a while there and then society made some changes after 2020. Unfortunately wealth inequality has gotten far far worse over the last few years, so that's not great either. There's no way to spend our way out of these problems.
  • 6 4
@Ttimer: what seems to have happened is that in the areas where “defund the police” was a common statement/viewpoint/actually implemented, there was also a general negative outlook on the police themselves.

So, police lose funding, which provides them less resources for training, education, hiring, etc. That, combined with no one Kiku by police in those areas, resulted in a small police force; either because they could hire, or because police left because it sucked to be a cop there because no one liked you.

Then, those same areas (see Seattle, Portland, parts of CA) saw an increase in crime, but they don’t have the capacity to address those crimes, so it creates a situation where there’s less consequence to commit a crime. In Seattle, you can steal a vehicle, and as long as you drive away fast, they are not allowed to pursue you. The backlog on unsolved murders in those areas is so long, that you’ve realistically got a solid 5 years between the time that you commit the crime and when you get caught. They only recently made it illegal to smoke crack in public in Washington.

They’re left having to hire more police to handle the increase in crime, but no one wants to do it, so you have to keep increasing salaries until it’s high enough that someone is willing to apply. So now you’ve got fewer police who get paid way more money each, which is probably why someone here commented that Portland cops can make $200k. If you’re interested in being a cop, you’re likely more right-leaning, so why in the world would you want to move to and work in Portland? $200k is why.

If the police departments had the funding to not be stretched thin, and to provide the education and training that people want to obtain by “defunding police to fund this other thing”, and if there wasn’t this generalized “police suck” outlook, I think things would be much different here.

To a lot of people’s point here, I don’t personally understand why our police drive in unmarked cars. The other side of the world makes it obvious where the police are, because they’re there to help. Perhaps if the states simply had enough police officers to cover the basis and address the pressing issues (actual crimes), then maybe we’d be able to start adopting some of those European practices and the whole system would be right sided? Idk.

@GTscoob: I like what you’re saying. I’m gonna hit you up to ride when I’m in Denver in June.
  • 5 5
@joecrosby: I agree. One of the funny issues with LE is that issues in Portland don't always apply to other places. There's a lot of reasons but a lot of it has to do with politics. If you look at New England (generally) where I work, it's typically very liberal but there's also still a lot of Yankee practical thinking and local control. Many agencies in New England are small municipalities that garner a lot of community support as there is a lot of familiarity between officers and residents. The big issue we had with "defund the police" is much of what they were talking about just wasn't a problem here. Can't tell you how many politicians around here were talking about choke holds. In 30 years, I've never been trained to "choke holds". It just was not an issue here but they kept saying it over and over. They were all over training too. This improved in many areas over the last couple years. Then, my CPR training was cancelled due to budget cuts this past year and I had to go back months later. As soon as these issues fade to something else they come for the money and move it somewhere else. Someone will be killed my police in Oregon and they'll be yelling on Boston bout choke holds again.
  • 2 4
@Tinshield: my wife’s family is all law enforcement in New England (chief, sherif, DEA, officer, etc). It is really interesting how it all comes together even on clear opposite ends of the country.

  • 1 5
flag joecrosby (3 days ago) (Below Threshold)
@Ttimer: I’m talking about the police being the ones educated in all the things you listed. This seems to be how it is in a lot of other countries. The ROI is intangible, because the current issue seems to be that police departments have a hard time hiring, and it’s generally portrayed that the police are poorly trained. Extra funding = extra training = more positive outlook from the public = more appealing job to be a cop. Everything comes full circle.
  • 6 1
@joecrosby: Bro, the police departments are already the most highly funded government organization from city to city. We give them everything they need. They're driving brand new Tahoe's, challengers, and everything. What they don't have is accountability.
  • 5 0
@joecrosby: Extra funding = extra training =/ a safer population.

This has been proven time and time again. You can spend more on policing but it does not change public behavior. American prisons are designed to punish, not rehabilitate. American criminal justice policy is designed to punish criminal activity rather than prevent the need for criminal activity.

At a high level, reducing income inequality and lifting folks out of poverty through social programs does more to reduce crime. Increasing funding for education supports this goal. Increasing funding for nonviolent response programs, mental health, addiction, and healthcare also alleviates economic stresses that can cause individuals to turn to crime. Spending 50% of a city's budget on police doesn't help any of this.
  • 1 1
@tkrumroy: Public safety is a 24/7/365 operation with minimum required staffing. No way around the expense. Training is also very expensive and it's not a "hey everyone, come down to the conference room for some training" kind of event. It can take weeks or even months to get everyone in an agency trained in one class as they all work different shifts with varying days off. Many agencies have a built-in training year-round where the curriculum is decided ahead of time.

@GTscoob: "defund the police wasn't about abolishing the police"

The internet never forgets: www.nytimes.com/2020/06/12/opinion/sunday/floyd-abolish-defund-police.html

@pistol2ne: it was always about chaos and disruption. The people most negatively affected are the ones that need police the most.

  • 1 0
 @CustardCountry: it’s not 1985 anymore.

@Tinshield: And yet I see cops driving around in armored vehicles with tactical gear. I'm a therapist and worked with a state trooper who said they have competitions to see who can antagonize people to the point of fighting back against the troopers when they have pulled people over for traffic violations. He says they're all on steroids. It's a serious problem within law enforcement.
  • 2 2
@tkrumroy: we have one tactical unit for 62 agencies and yes, they have an armored vehicle, not an M2 Bradley. When you say there’s a “serious problem within law enforcement” are you saying all law enforcement or some of the agencies or all of the 17,000 plus? You paint with a broad brush for a therapist.

 Same.
  • 3 4
I hope it is a crazy double down on the joke. Scott wins big in my books if they give it another month before revealing their master stroke of an April fools gag. I'd go so far as to give them a pass on the headset routing business

Jokes aside, this very likely marks the start of some very heavy tough times at Scott. In most cases when the company who's lent you significant funding sends in their own CEO only 4 months after the loan commences it's usually a sign they aren't confident of getting their investment back and are prepared to take drastic action to do so. Unfortunately it looks like Scott are not going to be sharing great news in the remainder of the year.
  • 13 0
Totally. You can bet Specialized and Canyon have activated their headhunters to grab any valuable Scott employees who want out of this mess.
  • 3 0
There is an apparent attempt to replace Zaugg with a man from Youngone. If you read the primary sources, Zaugg says that Youngone forced Scott to take out a loan on unrealistic terms (in total, Scott earned $61.7 million net in 21-22; in 2024, with saturated buyers, earning $126 million to repay the loan is simply unrealistic). Youngone planned to fire Zaugg on this basis but later pushed the dismissal through the board of directors.

  • 43 1
 it's Switzerland ;-)
  • 15 11
@Goldfinger: Maybe both are needed. The Swiss are neutral so no one feels offended, but it takes the French to bring the love. Once everything has settled, the Dutch police arrives at the scene and together they smoke a big one. Peace, at last.
  • 14 2
It's the Swiss, they take their neutrality VERY seriously.
  • 8 5

Sounds like Beat Zaugg might have a bit of a raging ego problem if he can't accept that his bosses fired him.
  • 6 2
Meh corporate power struggles are pretty standard. OpenAI had one not long ago, the board tried to force out the CEO like this but the employees rebelled and the board were forced to accept his reinstatement. The board of Apple did force out Steve Jobs at one point to install someone more controllable and it almost destroyed the company. In the end they had to acquire Steve's new company, Next computers, to get him and his operating system back.

A little research reveals the real story. www.forbes.com/forbes/2008/0519/068.html?sh=356c8e685f35

When Zaugg took over the company in 2005 he must have taken out a ton of loans and what did he do? He let Scott Mongomery talk him into starting ScottUSA. Lets remember that Mongomery helped his Dad lose Cannondale to investors. Very ironic actually. Zaugg big mistake was listenning to Montgomery who talked him into spending a ton of money. Brand new 15,000sq/ft headquarters in Sun Valley, big rig for events and of course all the people needed to sell, distribute and support scott bikes in the US. Also Mongomery talked him into focusing on niche markets like Triathalon and womens bikes. In short, he over extended himself to buy the company and to expand it into the USA. If he had just kept the majority share and the bikes simple, he would still be the CEO.
  • 6 1

  • 4 0
Looks like a VW Transporter (well, the passenger version of it). Doesn't look much like the old microbus anymore (they went front engine, FWD in the 90s with the T3, which was brought to the US as the Eurovan, and have had several generations since).
  • 3 0

  • 2 0
@g-42: You're correct, except for what you're referring to is T4.
  • 2 0
@paja-tousek: Sorry, mis-typed - the T3 was sold in the US as the Vanagon (still rear engine/RWD). What are we on now, T7?
  • 1 0
@SATN-XC VW Transporter or Multivan, which wouldn’t surprise me since it’s in Switzerland lol… multivans run up to 90k but are really nice!

Just came here to nominate Brendog for new CEO.

But, can we stop comparing the US with a population of 341,814,420 to countries like Switzerland with a population of 8,851,431?

We are a collection of states and commonwealths that each have their own unique characteristics.
  • 14 1
Given the amount of times Brendog has been robbed I don't think that's a good idea. The insurance costs alone would bankrupt them.

What's wrong with it then? Visibility is key so I suppose that's what those orange marks are for. Other than that, one car looks like an Opel (German brand, Vauxhal for the Brits), the other one looks like a Skoda (Czech Republic brand).

flag bunjiman82 (Apr 5, 2024 at 3:19) (Below Threshold)
@vinay: a gentle wafting soft edged orange ribbon that looks like it got sprayed by a 14yr old who ran past it while being chased on foot by the policeman for graffiti....

Yeah it's not highly visible or distinguishable when it's trying to get through traffic in an emergency situation and you glance at it in your rear view is it? Neither does it look threatening like you might get carried off in handcuffs, looks more like they might give you skittles.
  • 6 2
@bunjiman82: Seems like you have a different perception of what a police car is supposed to look like. You even seem to think a black American police car is more visible than a white car with orange markings so yeah, I'm not going to argue here. You see those blue units they have on the roof? I'll leave that up to you to figure out what these are and how they help with visibility if they happen to be in a hurry.
  • 2 4
@vinay: I didn't say anything about a black police car... And who's arguing, it's just my opinion dude. In the UK and most other countries police cars are covered in highly reflective markings with stand out colours (unless they're undercover and their objective is to not to be noticed) it just seems to me that these ones are pretty poorly marked and blue lights alone aren't enough typically.

I notice scrolling through the comments that I'm not the only one with this opinion tup
