PRESS RELEASE: Race Face

We are excited to launch the all new T3 tailgate pads! Offering true tonneau cover compatibility, a two-panel design for exact fit, firm fork placement with a ridged compression molded foam pad, and more padding than ever before, the new T3 tailgate pads have your truck, and your bike, covered.

Real Tonneau Compatibility: When the bikes are out and you want to keep your other cargo safe, thick foldaway downtube padding conveniently swings out of the way allowing your tonneau cover to fully close and lock. No more gaps or misfits when closing the tonneau.

Firm Fork Placement: A ridged compression molded foam pad not only protects your forks from getting banged up, it keeps the whole front of your bike securely in place and upright when bombing up those rough shuttle roads.

Your Pad. Your Way: Say goodbye to “close enough” fit or awkward bike-on-bike contact. Our two-panel pad design can adjust for any height of tailgate and the downtube attachment points can be moved to space bikes perfectly.

The 2-bike size offers partial tailgate coverage when rolling solo or in pairs. Adjust to fit your tailgate then customize to carry almost any type of bike, from XC race rigs to full-power eMTBs.

Could the pictures be made darker please
  • 128 5
We tried, but then the sun came out and we had to escape back to our caves.

 everything is perfect with pictures.
set phone brightness 80-100%

@raceface: I knew the 'red eye' logo meant something, but it all clicked today. When I'm in the PNW, I'll be sure to bring wood stakes, holy water, and garlic.

@YakuT: what an ass backwards statement. "the photos are not too dark, that is why you must set your brightness higher to compensate". It's definitely possible to see that its a tailgate pad but usually product photos are well lit so you can see the details fully. Sincerely - a desktop user

@everythingsucks: Random nonsense here but everytime I see your UN I just see Milo and smile, grab my guitar and start trying to link together those chords at real time speeds.

To add some additional clarity - pads include 4 strap threaders with the Mid and Full size pads, 2 with the 2 Bike Half-Stack - this is a cost for the replacement in case you lose them! The Mid Size has 5 downtube straps, and Full Size includes 6 downtube straps. The 2 bike has, well, 2.

@raceface I need one for my ram 2500 with ram boxes. Is either one compatible? The only dominations I’ve found suggest the mid size and full size is the same width and that doesn’t seem right.
  • 20 1
All pictures had to be from a Tacoma
  • 29 2
There seem to be quite a few of them around the office. They must have picked them up at Toyotathon.

 It's the law

 @Zaeius: its the law.

 @just-add-water: you’re kidding right?
  • 3 0
@raceface: you have those in Canada too?? NICE
  • 2 0
 Would expect nothing less.....
  • 10 2
You would think for close to $300 they would include the strap tool for free, unless it's $4 for a replacement.

Sorry for the confusion, we do include 4 strap threaders with the Mid and Full size pads, 2 with the 2 Bike Half-Stack - this is a cost for the replacement in case you lose them!

 Step 1. Buy a Ridgeline.

Step 2. Open the MagicTailgate(tm) sideways like a car door.

Step 3. Slide your tailgate pad on in about 20 seconds.

Step 4. Throw strap tool in trash.

@sfarnum: Takes me about 1 min 20 seconds to install mine on my Tacoma, but the rest of the time I spend owning a Tacoma.
  • 2 0
@james182 me too on my Navara. I'm pretty sure that the tool faff will increase install time. Otherwise looks like a nice pad though.
  • 2 0
@james182: Congratulations, the first step in recovery is admitting that you have a problem.

It's made by RaceFace, so it probably comes with sand paper fitted to the part that touches the paint work.
  • 4 1
Same material that they use on the inside of their kneepads.
  • 2 1
Owned by Fox, put fine sandpaper on the stanchion guard, ruin forks, sell more forks... profit?
  • 9 1
IDK, the newly released Fox Mission pad looks pretty nice. /s

 RF is Fox
  • 4 0
@likeittacky: actually fox head (clothing) is not part of fox shox(tail)
  • 5 0
You mean you can make these with padding where the downtube sits and not need to provide your own pool noodle padding?

Meanwhile in Europe we have vans.Roll em in, ride em out. Locked inside not hanging off the back like a guy who cant fit the 2.4m Kingspan sheet he just bought, in his car.

Seriously with space at the back of your vehicle why not just lie the bike down in there? Fits in a hatch no prob like that. I've had 2 mtbs in my mates Golf and looking at the size of some of these trucks youd get the whole Golf in the back of the truck never mind a mtb.

Is it some kind of caravan-club-esque signalling to the world?
  • 10 0
people on this side of the pond need some huge trucks with the smallest bed size possible
  • 4 0
You could do that with 1, maybe 2 (if you don't care about your paint) lying in the bed. You can't lay 5 or 6 bikes in the back of a pickup bed while shuttling without doing some serious damage to the resale value of those bikes. Unless of course you remove the wheels and flat pack them, but ain't nobody got time fo dat
  • 2 1
Vans definitely have their advantages but trucks do too, I drive a tacoma and I've had a solid amount of days hauling 6 bikes and 6 people for shuttling, with them generally being a lot more capable offroad than a unibody van. Decent amount of tradeoffs for daily use, but having an open cargo area comes in handy when hauling something tall / long. Nothing wrong with having overhand as long as it's secured properly, and has a caution flag attached.

I live in the US and roll my XL Ripmo right into the back of my Transit Connect (passenger version), despite the foot print being much smaller than any truck on the US market.

Of course Ford never made any effort to sell those to non-fleets and the wagon version had a pretty half-assed interior. Now they're discontinued completely. The US market loves their trucks.
  • 2 0
@puukkopedro Can I fit a snowmobile in the back of the van too?
  • 5 1
I was just brainstorming how I could modify my current pad to be compatible with my tonneau cover. This looks promising.
  • 4 2
So no more dimpled tailgates from badly placed seams like on the T2 version? Needed a cut up yoga mat under it to properly protect the tailgate.
  • 2 0
I got that T2 as well and had the same issue, definitely not an ideal design. But good to see they seem to have fixed it with the new version.
  • 1 0
I thought I was the only one experiencing this. Didn't realize this was a thing. Top of my tailgate looks like a golf ball from using my @raceface T2.
Looks like the T3 does have better all around padding.
  • 2 0
@trm18: Can you guys explain further what you mean by this? I have a T2 but only used it a few times so far. I havent seen any damage but want to know what to look out for.
  • 2 1
@sino428: My buddy has one, there is basically no padding where the downtube sits, so if you have a metal tailgate it gets dented by the bike bouncing.
  • 1 0
@iridedj: The bikes are denting the tailgate? Crazy.
  • 4 0
@sino428: Just make sure it's installed correctly. Lots of people install pads incredibly wrong and then blame the manufacturer for damage to the bikes and vehicles.

Saying that... my bike got scratched to shit from tailgate pads so hopefully the new one addresses that. One off paint job on my frame and it's scratched. But hey... I guess I shoulda wrapped it.
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: How did it get scratched?
  • 1 0
@sino428: Rubbing on the rough material and the straps.

The straps in my opinion are a flaw on all of those tailgate pads regardless of the manufacturer. The buckles are likely to smack against your frame. Things move around, rub. You got dirt on everything. Rubs the paint off. You run frame protection it's a non issue. For me... I think these straps should all be encased in something soft and washable.

But that was the old version. This new version looks really well thought out. They took the time to give you installation tools to make sure installation is easy and correct. THey've got protection for the smaller racks with things moving around. Everything. They spent some time developing this. I can't wait to try one. Thing looks dialed. Both versions.
  • 1 0
@onemanarmy: I can see how that could happen. I have a small downtube protector on the spot where my bikes sit on the pad to protect against that. Never thought the straps could be an issue. Might put some clear protection in that area now.
  • 1 0
@sino428: I'll likely frame wrap any bikes I have in the future. Just because.
  • 4 0
I just bought a t2 less than 48 hours ago lol
  • 3 0
Why’d you think it was on sale?
  • 1 0
Why sell the same exact pad as the Fox Mission, with just RACEFACE on it? Same pictures even on both websites for the features example pics.
  • 1 1
they are part of the same company, with raceface being the developing brand and the fox one existing for those that want a different logo on it. Raceface is definitely the core brand who has been making tailgate pads for longer, just they share resources for co-branding opportunities
  • 1 0
Why not? Is it really that big a deal if they sell it under both brand names? This isn’t new. They also sold the previous version under both names.
  • 3 0
 Happy to see the evolution...
  • 6 3
Now I want a truck *cries in EU gas prices and common sense*
  • 3 1
You need a VW Caddy in stead. Much better tool for the job.
  • 2 1
and price for a truck +40-50%
  • 1 1
Used Transit, Opel or VW product makes much more sense, pickups make no sense unless you're towing heavy all the time.
  • 1 0
Iveco daily 4x4 is the ultimate.
  • 3 2
Now the stanchions will touch the filthy pad and scratch the heck out of the stanchions. Horrible design.
  • 1 0
Nice, padding for the downtube finally, also like the half stack option but not stoked about the price.
  • 2 0
RF has been covering my ass for almost 4 seasons.
  • 1 0
Im pretty damn happy with my Yakima Gatekeeper gen2. No more straps, but actual G-buckles.
  • 1 0
If it works with a Tonneau does it work with a camper shell closing? @raceface
  • 2 1
Smart, and what I need, but not at that price
  • 1 0
@edummann yeah, this is overkill. Tailgates pads started out as old blankets and now cost nearly as much as a decent hitch rack.
  • 1 0
For those who get to the top of the hill with a different type of motor.
  • 1 1
Last version was good, this is much better. Added to my list of shit I don’t need.
  • 1 0
WTF. I just put on my new T2 on my truck this last weekend
  • 1 0
For an extra $400.00you can get a NSR4.
  • 1 0
Just here to read the negative comments.
  • 1 0
yeah right buddy, i can get 7 bikes on the mid size no problem
  • 1 0
@raceface are you going to release some patterned versions?
  • 1 0
That'd be a sick seasonal option. Do like a mid year release of a new design. Limited offering. twice a year... Just sayin.
  • 1 0
If you needed a new Tacoma for a shoot ask next time.
  • 1 1
What's up with the reverse license plate? That a taco thing?
