Shimano Releases New Technium & Twinspark Sunglasses

The latest product release from Shimano isn't a wireless drivetrain or fancy new brakes. Instead, it's sunglasses, three different styles to be exact. That's might not be as exciting as fresh bike bits, but the new models do look like a solid entries into the eyewear world.

The Technium and Technium L models are available in a wide range of lens tins to cover everything from road riding to mountain biking in the darkest forests. The main difference between the two models is the frame design – the Techium uses a full frame around the lens, while the Technium L has a half frame design.

Technium Details
• Frames: Matte Black, Matte White, Teal, Teaberry, Matte Grey, Dark Olive, Bronze Gold
• Frame: 45% Arkema Rilsan clear G850 Rnew bio-based materials
• Weight: 27.4g
• Lenses: RIDESCAPE RD, OR, and GR
• Spare Lens: Clear
• MSRP: $100 USD, €99.95
ride.shimano.com
The lack of a lower frame on the Technium L does saves 1.4 grams, something to keep in mind in the unlikely event that you've exhausted every other possible place to save weight and are now obsessing over glasses grams.

The Technium has an interchangeable lens...

...with small vents located at the bottom of the lens to help prevent fogging.

Both Technium models come with a spare clear lens, a welcome addition for riders in perpetually cloudy riding zones. The Technium L glasses are also available with a photochromatic lens option, which lightens or darkens depending on the amount of UV light it's exposed to.

The prices are pretty reasonable, at least when compared to other high-end sunglasses on the market – the Technium models go for $100 USD, and the Twinspark, which doesn't have an interchangeable lens, is priced at $65 USD.

The Technium L glasses use a half-frame design for a tiny bit of weight savings.

I hope they will never come with it. And I also hope, that UCI or whoever comes with some regulation so that bikes are pure mechanical devices with no electronics (except auxiliary stuff like computers). I am sick of this over-electronic, stuff where it's not needed at all. A good mechanical drivetrain serves just as well (regarding performance) and big races are one with it (electronic shifting probably doesn't give a measurable advantage). I don't need another thing that can be theoretically hacked, be a subject of a subscription fee or send my data to some suspicious Chinese (even if it's how often I ride or whatever).

Dang, that's good pricing. Hopefully someone makes a perscription insert, or better yet shimano makes a perscription lens.

I can't "see" the market for a prescription insert

I'm sorry... Im going now

Bummed on the name. why didn't they call it Techneium SG-D690. What happened to the ridiculous names?
  • 7 0
The only bummer with prescription lenses is that they cant make them with the rounded lenses like these have... I mean they can, but it will be like looking through a fishbowl... god I just need to man up and start wearing contacts haha
  • 5 0
@Takaya94: check Sport RX. They did some oakleys that wrap for me years ago that have been perfect with no fishbowl
  • 3 0
@Takaya94: ditto what @RVA said. I have a set of Oakley's with a significant wrap and no distortion.
  • 3 0
@Takaya94: Oakley makes good prescription glasses with curved lenses.

@thrasher2: yeah that sounds rough! Luckily my eyes aren't too bad.. its like I see the world in 420p clarity ha. I have a pretty mild prescription so my eye doc told me that I am not a candidate for that anyways Frown
  • 26 0
Quality photochromic sunglasses priced closer to where they should be, like Tifosi?? Yes please!! There is a ton of opportunity to take market share from the big price gougers like Smith and Oakley.
  • 7 1
For sure. I've never understood why they're so expensive. The frames are literally $0.05 of injection molded plastic.
  • 6 6
@notthatfast: I know the optics are better, but I'm done with expensive glasses for riding. They just get trashed from the sweat, dirt and impacts. 12 pairs of tinted safety glasses on amazon for $26CAD, and a box of clears for low light/forest riding. 21.4g per pair, frameless to shed sweat and reasonably scratch resistant.
  • 1 0
Why undercut price gougers when you can join them?
  • 13 0
@notthatfast: Because Smith and Oakley are not sunglasses/goggle companies so much as they are marketing companies. The consumer pays 99% margin on expensive eyewear so that those companies can sponsor athletes, invest in events, and otherwise go for high-dollar marketing exposure, which in turn convinces people to pay 99% margin on expensive eyewear because of aesthetics and brand association.

No hate - I own a pair of oakley sunglass and ski goggles and they are perfectly great. But that is the business model - its a marketing engine!
  • 2 0
 @sfarnum: Exactly.

I love how people crap on using cheaper glasses. The people downvoting my comment must have enough money to waste on subsidizing marketing manager salaries.

  • 8 4
@Mac1987: Luxottica's 300 dollar sunglasses are probably made in the same factories as RockBros.
  • 13 4
 No. Stop supporting stolen IP.
  • 1 0
With Break Wind Design Fiy Your Face
  • 2 1
@jayacheess: Doubtful. You can very clearly see in Rockbros designs that they aren't an identical product, they're just cheap copies made by people who don't understand the original design.

A perfect example of this is the pedals. The original has a bearing cap that has a hex to tighten it, but it has a closed-back design to prevent dirt from getting in. The stolen IP copy has the same cap, but it's open because it would have cost more to seal the back and because they don't know/don't care. This allows dirt to get into bearing area that should be sealed.
  • 7 1
@jayacheess: you got downvoted, but with the way Luxottica operates, and their production for a large part being done in China, I wouldn't be surprised. However, these Chinese factories do produce to a cost. They can deliver wildly varying qualities, depending on prices they get offered and QC applied to them.
  • 1 2
 @Mac1987: Exactly
  • 5 0
I actually owned the Amazon glasses previously and now I have the shimano ones. The shimano lenses are noticeably clearer /no distortion. I always felt like looking through the rock bros ones everything was slightly "off". This is probably just personal fit but the shimanos stay in place much better under my helmet too
  • 2 0
@nfontanella: It's the difference between a cheap copy and an original. There are some knock-off products you can clearly tell are the same products from the same factory, which are just relabeled. Rock Bros is not one of those, and everyone that buys them should be ashamed of themselves because you know what you're supporting.
You're in MTB, you can obviously afford to spend a bit more to support the original makers. It's not like we're talking Yeti vs other brands that cost 1/3 the price. It's like a $20-40 difference. If people keep spending money and don't support the IP holders, when they close their doors you're only left with crap copies and brands that are actually out of your budget.
  • 2 2
@nickfranko: I don’t think you’re giving enough credit to the groups of people copying designs. In other industries they have taken over design and the original boutique brands that led the way are gone. Innovation is still happening, but at a much lower cost.

I’m not saying this is ethical or the right way to spend one’s money, but innovation will continue for sure.
  • 8 3
Who are these butthurt people down voting me? We KNOW 300 dollar sunglasses are a complete ripoff. Luxottica has made the sunglasses industry into the eyewear equivalent of the diamond industry. They cost cents on the dollar to design and build, but their strangle-hold on the market means they can keep prices high.

Yes, you purchased $300 dollar sunglasses that realistically should have been sold for $40. Get over it.
  • 2 0
@jayacheess: I have a pair of $200 oakleys with the photochromic lenses. Been using them almost every day riding for a couple years. Can be worn in night or day- no need to swap lenses. Hate to sit here and rep a huge company but they’re pretty sick… I heard they dont work well if you ride in the forest with trees, because of the changing light. But if you live in the desert I recommend them
  • 3 1
@flexorcist: I have no doubt that they're great glasses, and I'm glad you're enjoying them.

But photochromatic lens technologies have been around since the 60s. Companies like Luxottica (and subsidiary brands like Oakley), just repackage these technologies with new, fancy sounding names and other PR buzz, and act like they've done a ton of research and design. They haven't.
  • 2 0
@Chondog94: I will never give them credit, because they're literally stealing the design.
  • 1 0
I purchased rockbros. They are uncomfortable and the lens is not awesome, to say the least. Unfortunately something I used twice and now will be on the way to the landfill. The $25 Tifosi glasses are decent and affordable. They fog but an anti fog wipe every few rides seems to take care of that.
  • 7 0
No heads up display… come on Shimano, you must try harder! Plus nobody wants anything now if it doesn’t have a battery to charge or has a E-bike specific model!

Prolly not, this advertisement is solely for the dirt series. The water series for fishing is still in preproduction.

I take the 1.4g hit to not have my face cut up by the bottom of the frameless glasses...
  • 2 0
Yeah, but look at it this way: that cut of flesh will save another 1.4 grams easily!
  • 2 0
@Mac1987: don't forget the weight savings from loss of blood, as well as the light headedness.
  • 4 0
I have some Shimano sunglasses got them for like $20 on discount. Great coating and tint, the clarity is so so. They stopped making them, I should have got two pair.
  • 2 0
The half frame looks really sweet and i like how the arms allow the top of frame to sit well above the brow. Not a fan of glasses having a brace between the eyeballs though. Well priced glasses for what they look like and fitment + multiple colors to choose from. IMO.
  • 2 0
@likeittacky I agree with you, except for the half frame. I've seen a few too many pictures of peoples cheeks cut by exposed lens edges from a crash. I'm sticking with full frames.
  • 5 0

I tried a pair of these last summer and honestly the optics are so bad I got dizzy and had to take them off. The fade on the lens makes everything change color from the top to the middle and when you're riding it's not a good combo. They're relegated to BBQ glasses now
  • 4 0
 These better be e-bike compatible

Normally I am not a fan of companies creating separate branding for new product outside their core business...but that Shimano logo on the arm wreaks of being some swat someone got at a boat show or booth at Sea Otter.

@nfontanella: And not dark enough in the blazing sun.

I wonder what's the driver for a company like Shimano to enter a market that seems to be completely out of their domain...
  • 11 0
Frankly, ridiculous profit margins. Quality frames cost $8 to make, and lenses maybe $5 (max $15 for the really fancy ones). These glasses, depending on the brand name applied to them, then get sold for anywhere between $100 and $400. R&D is practically zero, and brand name is often the differentiator.
Shimano has a respectable name and experience with selling sports clothing and accessories.
  • 1 0
@Mac1987: we got an expert here.

Have you ever started a glasses reseller?

Not objecting, just wondering
  • 5 0
@Roost66: My wife worked for a high end sunglass company for many years. I went to the trade shows with her in Europe and the Orient where companies pick frames and lenses for the coming year. The mark up is insane at every level before the product makes it to the consumer. It is anywhere from 100 to 300%. It has been a few years, but at that time a pair of sunglasses that retailed for $100-150 cost the sunglass company 8-10 dollars. There are a few lens manufacturers that make all the lenses for all the companies. I don’t buy expensive riding glasses, just stupid expensive bikes. There are a couple of companies on Amazon that sell for about 20 bucks and have good quality lenses and frames. I currently am a fan of Kapvoe glasses. Photochromatic lens that doesn’t scratch, comfortable frames with no weird pressure points, carrying case and good cleaning cloth for $19.99. I just bought $100 bucks worth before they go out of business or start raising prices.
  • 3 0
@Roost66: no, but I've seen several reports from industry insiders (some by name), all stating the same: the margins are ridiculous, Luxottica is basically a horizontal and vertical monopolist, and smaller competition gets taken over or pushed out.
