Forget Dropper Posts, Black Math Bike Created a Dropper Frame

Mar 7, 2024
by Aleksander Margolis
Every once in a while a press release comes through that makes us take a double (or triple) take. That's the case with this announcement from Black Math Bikes. The Polish company has apparently created a bike with a handlebar mounted remote that turns it from 140mm trail bike into a 170mm descending machine. There's no traditional dropper post - instead, the top tube moves down to get out of the way for the descent.

It's certainly unlike anything currently on the market - read on for Black Math's description of their creation.

GCode is 2 in 1 MTB frame. Simple as that

PRESS RELEASE: Black Math Bikes

bigquotesWriting it truly feels unreal, but I have just fulfilled my childhood dream of running my own bike company. When I signed up for this Pinkbike account, I was a typical Eastern Europe dirt jumping kid, who loved the thrill of riding sketchy jumps all over Poland, making friends on the road, and drawing my first bikes. Long story short, we are 15 years later, I made a degree in design and worked on multiple bikes for different companies and a few for myself, but two years ago I started a project - Black Math. Along with a few friends from the dirt jumping period, we teamed up, gathered funds from the EU startups program and here we are with a GCode - a bike frame that will turn heads on the trail! This project sat in my head for far too long, and after riding it, I can once again say: that my dream came true! Designed and produced in Poland, rides way beyond my imagination and does not look like a Session. Let's go!Aleksander Margolis

Black Math Bike is a bunch of geeks with deep roots in the bike industry. We're passionate about reimagining bicycles for a better future. Black Math Bikes focuses on innovation, sustainability, and quality in our low-key approach to cycling improvement.

We introduce the precisely crafted kinematic system that allows you to change your bike from an efficient 140mm travel trail bike to a 170mm travel shred weapon on the run.

How does it work?

The Upturn Dropper is controlled with a regular thumb-operated lever. Still, instead of a classic telescopic seat post, it uses a set of links located at the top tube end, creating a virtual pivot point system.

This allowed us to precisely design the movement of the seat, including the change of the angle. But the real magic began when we integrated seat adjustment kinematics with the four-bar Horst Link suspension. Now, we can adjust the geometry and suspension performance due to the change of seat position.

Lowering the seat sets the whole bike in descent mode - the head angle becomes slacker, the bottom bracket drops, and the suspension attains 170mm of travel with a 33% progression rate. Raising the seat transitions into climb mode - steeper head angle, higher bottom bracket (and clearance), and reduced suspension travel to 140mm. A shorter travel with the same shock setup results in less sag and a firmer suspension feel, providing stable support during intense pedalling. It's like combining the benefits of Aenomaly Switchgrade, Flip-chip, and Climb-switch, but without any extra effort. You use the dropper as always and enjoy a bike that offers unmatchable possibilities!

Why CNC?

Due to the frame geometry adjustment, it consists of smaller parts connected through bearings and screws. This type of design is well-suited for low-volume production using CNC machines.

It offers us several advantages:

Technical:
Ultimate overall precision.
We can use the unweldable 7075 alloys, nearly twice as strong as the alloys used for welded aluminum frames.
We can precisely manage the compliance of the construction structures. Downtube uses adhesive joints to improve the torsional stiffness of the front end.

Quality:
By eliminating manual technological processes, we reduce the possibility of errors caused by human factors. This reduces the risk of quality issues.
In-house production gives us control over every aspect of production.

 szachimat

Environmental:
Frame divided into smaller components reduces the consumption of large aluminum blocks compared to other CNC technology frame producers.
We produce locally, in Poland.
We use highly recyclable materials.
Splitting the frame into smaller components makes repairs easier after damage.
We can ensure the availability of spare parts.

This is probably one of the coolest displays of bike over-engineering I've ever seen

The “prototype piece of cloth” keeps the engineering subtle though. Smart boys.

Not really, you’re just increasing the points of failure. It’s better isolated in the seat post itself. It’s one of those “we engineered around theory instead of practicability” situations.

 @monkeybizz: Sooo….you‘re saying it‘s overengineered?

Now we just need a version with the Supre drivetrain for maximum engineering.

Waking up to see our bike on the front page of pinkbike and reading your comments is one of the best feelings our small team could get after years of developing this idea! Big love fellow pinkbikers! Now back to work - @black_math_bike on IG for monthly updates as we prefer to polish the product rather than take BTS cnc selfies

I too am a fan of the effort that has gone into this, and hence I mean this in the kindest way possible... This bike won't sell. It's too unusual, you might sell one or two to curious rich guys, but it simply isn't going to be the start of something big. Massive props for the effort, but please don't sink too much money into this unless you have a serious fall back plan. This project is not going to pay for itself.

  • 42 0
Crazy bike but I don't hate it
  • 31 0
The creativity is amazing and should be applauded. I'm curious for the weight as well, and I suspect that's where there may be an issue. Won't climb like a 140mm trail bike if it weighs 40 lbs. Although at the pace we're going trail bikes will be there soon. Of course if the point is to make a 170mm enduro bike more efficient on the climbs a lockout switch may suffice...
  • 5 1
Curious what the weight is too. But man my 210 oneup v2 dropper is heavy. A few extra bearrings at the top tube might be kinda comparable?
  • 6 0
I think the biggest issue will be lateral stiffness, both at the rear wheel and the shock. That and handling all the forces that'll be going into the top tube. It looks like the camo'd dropper thingy is the only thing stopping the top tube from shooting into the rider's crotch on a compression. That said, I do love the creativity here

"we challenge the industry to rethink what a mountain bike can be" - if there is one industry that does not need help in coming up with very complicated solutions, it's the bike industry.
Maybe someone could come in with a challenge of simplicity, so that we don't end up with 10 bar linkage suspension in 2040?

Very interesting concept. Their website shows how the geometry and saddle drop changes throughout the switch in riding modes. It's odd that they didn't show this info in this press release.
  • 7 0
This looks pretty sweet-and if it works at this scale it could work for shorter and longer travel applications too!

It’s the first bike to live up to being innovative and new in years.
  • 5 0
 This looks brilliant

My only worries are that the gubbins under the cloth better be well sealed because its right in the line of fire from the back wheel

Im getting cybertruck vibes from the raw finish and angles on frame tubes (tho Aleksander sounds way less of a bellend than the guy behind that)
  • 6 0

pretty dang awesome that something like this happens instead of just incremental new ideas (not necessarily better ideas). Wonder how wobbly it feels though with so few long rigid pieces across the total length
  • 4 1
So it’s basically a clunky beefed up version of a Strive? However, once you have gone up the trail or down for anything in between you need XC skills for flow trails as there is no dropper to prevent the seat rupturing your sphincter. Old school.
  • 3 1
Yeah it's definitely designed for a very specific kind of ride where it's all up or all down and nothing in between. There are so many situations I drop my seat that I wouldn't want to go into full transformer mode, like going up and over obstacles and technical climbs and quick hits on the side of a trail and a hundred things. I also like to sit on my dropped seat when I'm chillin for a minute for whatever reason without actually getting off my bike (that's just a lazy convenience though). I'm curious how quickly it goes from one form to the other vs down/up on a dropper. Seems like it would be a longer transition but maybe not by a significant degree. Hope we get to see it in action soon.

Not hating on this bike at all btw, I actually think it's really f***ing cool with clearly impressive engineering and creative people behind it. I'd love to try it out. Just saying it isn't suited for every type of ride/terrain you might use an enduro rig for. But they know that. They even describe themselves as a niche MTB business. So more power to them. I hope they make it and I get to see one in the wild someday!
  • 3 0
I oddly love it. Two things I am worried about: weight and that linkage up by the headset. I have the feeling that the bushings of that linkage will be gone in no time due to how the loads will hit there.

subscribed to the news letter, I hope it will actually come out!
  • 5 0
Love to see something new on the market. I hope they find some success.
  • 2 0
What kind of seatpost do you need to run to make sure the minimum insertion is sufficient? This looks like it will snap either the frame or seatpost on a heavy hit to the saddle.
  • 2 0
I want to say something clever/crafty but all that comes to mind is that if this bunch wants to tinker and they are enjoying the process, have at it/who am I to stand in their way.
  • 1 0
Mad props, really... I could have seen and imagined myself too over the years and during my design studies, concepts of 2 bikes in one or toptube/seat combined. But I never saw something coming real nor felt the bike industry taking the gamble of this path. Seeing that working and actually has a nice stance is just so great, very nice job!
  • 1 0
I'm really impressed they've mangaed to incoperate so many good features with minimal compromise, usually achieving one thing leads to another being sub optimal, only down sides i can see is it's ugly in climb mode but thats solved by it looking good in descend and that added multi link pivot at the front of the top tube adds a bit of complexity and maintenance.
  • 1 0
Totally badass idea! Checkout the geo charts longish chainstays and headtube, which is what i prefer.

"The bike's name pays homage to the contemporary craftsmanship of the 21st century, indicating our dedication to technical perfection, precision, and the highest quality."
  • 1 0
Assuming the shock doesnt behave drastically different at the two travel leverages the only thing I think that would make this perfect is somehow getting enough room to fit even a wireless dropper post in it. Even on climbing up them bombing down trails there is still some small short downhills or flat sections that you wouldnt want to go full transformer but just drop the seat for short sections. Hell just sitting on my bike taking a break a dropper is very convenient.
  • 1 0
This reminds me of an idea I've had for a while. A suspended and heavily damped single pivot headtube. Only a few mm of travel, but just enough that it unweights itself while climbing to steepen the headtube, and when pointed seriously downhill, the weight of the bike and rider move the pivot enough to slacken the headtube angle in real-time based on the trail.
  • 1 0
What can I say; as unorthodox as it is, I do like it. It's a cool idea that seem well executed and I wish them all the success with their project.

That being said, this whole concept opens up an entirely different can of worms in regards to geometry, dynamic weight distribution, linkage rate, shock tune, etc. I haven't yet made up my mind wheter this is even a good idea to begin with. There's a lot of stars that would have to align in order to make this bike handle well in both modes.

Also I think I would have preferred a bike with a more conventional, non-adjustable layout -- but constructed in the same way as this, with CNC'd and bonded tubes of AL 7075. That would probably have been a more popular approach.

Why didn't they go with short link rear suspension with another linkage actuating the shock against top tube?
