Derek Teel of Dialed Health was struck by a driver while out riding on January 30, 2023 in Lincoln, California. The accomplished cyclist and strength trainer suffered a severely broken pelvis, a broken femur, a tibial spine fracture, a fibula head fracture, a torn colon and a collapsed lung.

This week, California Highway Patrol have arrested a suspect, identified as Abraham Aguirre-Escobar, and taken him into custody for felony Hit and Run charges. Teel thanked everyone who reached out with tips in the past couple of weeks that led to the arrest.

bigquotesLast night I sat down with the investigator and he told me what they did to find this guy and it was nothing short of amazing. These are details I probably can't really talk about moving forward and I know you guys understand at this point, this process becomes something different, and I'll have to be a little less transparent than I am about the rest of my life, but the important thing is justice is going to be served and hopefully this means that there's one less hit and run in the future where a father's left to die on the side of the road with no help. Very grateful for all of you and I know the CHP wanted to thank you guys personally for being involved and for sending in tips and for not sleeping on this because it's been three and a half weeks and they found him. They got him.Derek Teel

California Highway Police Statement:

On February 22, 2024, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of a major injury hit-and-run incident that occurred on January 30, 2024. The suspect, identified as Abraham Aguirre-Escobar, was taken into custody for felony Hit and Run charges related to the tragic crash.

On January 30, 2024, a devastating crash occurred on southbound Crosby Herald Road at Wise Road within Placer County. The crash involved a vehicle which struck a bicyclist in the eastbound lane of Wise Road. As a result of the impact, the bicyclist was ejected from his bike and landed on the roadway. The bicyclist sustained major life threatening injuries and was transported from the scene for treatment.

The suspect vehicle that struck the bicyclist failed to stop and render aid to the severely injured bicyclist and instead fled the scene immediately. The CHP diligently pursued leads and gathered evidence over the past weeks, leading to the identification and subsequent arrest of the suspect. The CHP commends the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, Valley Division Investigate Services, witnesses, and the community in bringing justice to the victim and his family.

The arrest of Aguirre-Escobar serves as a reminder that hit-and-run incidents will not go unpunished. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court to face the felony Hit and Run charge. The CHP urges anyone with additional information related to this case to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. Our thoughts remain with the Teel family during this trying time. The CHP remains committed to ensuring the safety of our roadways and holding accountable those who violate the law.

I don't see much difference between this and attempted murder. Same disregard of human life and the same complete lack of morals. Should be the same sentence as attempted murder.

People like this driver are seriously pieces of shit. They’re nothing but cowards and will leave people for dead. I live in the Denver metro and hit and runs seem to be a daily occurrence. On a lighter note, get well man and ride again - this type of shit pisses me off.

While I was fortunately uninjured, as well as my bike, I was hit in the god damn crosswalk and the driver took off. I'm sure it was absolutely my fault for riding my mountain bike or something, and not the guy who couldn't bother stopping.

@FUbob: the lst time I was hit by a car on my bike it was a white kid with 2 lawyers for parents. I have no clue how any border security would effect that.

FACTUALLY speaking every person I know who has been hit by a car on a bike would not have been hit if in there was proper infrastructure.

@RonSauce: @RonSauce: "do you people really believe you aren't racist"

No, just that I didn't say anything "racist", which is objectively true.

You yourself, are a racist. Even babies are racist, it's human nature, and I don't think humans are inherently evil, or that this is a problem that needs to be solved.

"or do you just think (incorrectly) that everyone is so dumb that they can be gaslit?"

Most people aren't that dumb, yourself excluded. The word "gaslit" isn't being used correctly here, if you don't know what a word means just look it up lmao

Originally, I thought you were just a midwit, because you know the typical NPC script, but it's clear now that you are much less.

"I can 100% guarantee I'm not the first person to call you racist, and you should think about that."

You're not, and I have thought about it, to an extent you really will never understand. What you don't get, is that that is how I arrived at my views (which you are mentally not capable
of understanding) in the first place, through critical thinking, which will be a novel experience for you someday, if you ever experience it.

Pitiful that you think that you're clever

This is why I love mountain biking and don't own a road bike. Once you are on single track, the added risk of of moving vehicles reduces. You are then free to add risk and hazard as you choose!

Problem is I don't enjoy wasting my life commuting in a car. About an hour and a half round trip in a car, 2 hours on a bicycle.
  • 21 0
I've commuted to work by bike for over 20 years, some of the way protected and some on street, and I don't think I would have survived the grind without the bookends of a bike ride on both sides of my day. NOTHING gets you ready or recovered from the stressful BS of work like a ride in the cold & ice, or trying to beat a dark rain cloud, or seeing a gorgeous sunrise/sunset, or countless other experiences so different than the typical office environment.

A lot of people state things that are obviously not, but I gotta believe riding a bike on the road without getting run over does fall into the bucket of "I've got a right to..."

Nothing to destress like a short 4-mile commute, you see things you don't see in a car, and it unironically improves your ability to think by getting the blood flowing. I would love singletrack or rough doubletrack to work, but I'll still take pavement over the bus and lightrail any day.

Holy Jesus, a lot of folks showing their racism here! Folks who see specific patterns in crime and chalk it up to race, not socio-economic status, or access to education and healthcare. Folks whose train of thought clearly got no further than 'blame it on race, and call it a day'. Folks who point to racial statistics in incarceration or employment and then smugly think that the 'elephant in the room' is that racism is justifiable because they don't understand that statistical correlation does NOT equal causation. Some POS committed a heinous crime, his name doesn't matter, his race doesn't matter, his height, age, weight, sexual orientation... it all doesn't matter in the context of just being a POS.

Clearly you've never lived around large populations of blacks or latino immigrants. My first bike was stolen by a black man at 6 in 1973. A drunk illegal drove 90 MPH through my neigbhorhood in 1975 and destroyed my parents' van. He had no insurance or license and we got nothing. There were my first two experiences. What you're calling racism is simply realism and pattern recognition. When you live among them if you don't learn to recognize patterns you will be victimized. My guess is that you've never lived anywhere like New Orleans or El Paso or many other US cities that are swamped with crime and homelessness right now. It's very easy to lecture us when you don't know the first thing about it. If you choose to label me as this or that for stating the truth, I simply do not care. What I care about is keeping my people safe from incidents like this and many others I've experienced first hand. Good day.
  • 2 1
@Imgonnarideon: Thanks for perfectly illustrating the kind of race bias I'm talking about. Your pattern recognition goes like this: "I see blacks and latinos doing crime, therefore it's because they're black or latino that they're doing crime"... It's NOT racist to recognize that racial minorities are massively overrepresented in crime statistics, what IS racist is to believe the cause of this is race and not circumstance. Poor people do crime, desperate people do crime, people without education or opportunities do crime, people in bad company do crime. Let me ask you this, does a house fall down because of the color of it's paint? or does a house fall down because it wasn't built properly, or because it has a poor foundation, or because the wrong building materials were used in it's construction??? I wonder how people with your opinions are even able to consider crime in a country like Russia, hardly any racial diversity at all but yet still, there's ample crime, how does your 'pattern recognition, and 'simple realism' explain that? do you have more anecdotes perhaps?

Our ancestors understood justice, going back at least 1000 years.

In Merry Olde England, hanging was the standard punishment for many violent crimes.

I predict that one day not too far in the future, that cruel and unusual punishments will make a comeback in the (former) USA.
