Cam Zink's Prototype Devinci - Crankworx Whistler 2022

Prototype Devinci. Photo by Matt Beer.

Cam Zink, who signed for Devinci in January, has been rolling around Whistler on an unreleased prototype that looks to have more travel than the 160mm Spartan HP that Kazimer tested last September.

Matt Beer snapped the photo above with his Nokia flip phone from 2003, but it does give us a good view of the bike's Split Pivot suspension layout and what looks to be a Push Elevensix shock. Devinci didn't want to say much about Cam's bike other than it was welded in their Chicoutimi, Quebec, factory, but they're definitely working on something new.

Are we still allowed to say "Looks like a Session"?
Asking for a friend.
  • 24 2
Only if it looks like a session
  • 3 1
Yes Look Like A Session In The End of The World.

@freestyIAM: They all look like sessions.

I'm here to ask the real question on everyones mind.

Where did Matt Beer get a working battery for a nokia flip phone? CDMA or GSM?
  • 2 0
Old phones are very popular-anti trackers. Very big deal with all the paid 'like' houses.
  • 4 0
The batteries last forever and you can buy replacements off Amazon ect. The batteries are mostly universal too, unlike certain bike parts.
  • 1 0
Nokias problems started at the time when other companies started to sell flip phones (we called them shell phones) and Nokia hesitated. It took long time before they started to produce their own flip models.

@jrocksdh: 2G is basically shut-down in US and 3G is now in the middle of shutdown phase for most of the operators, so all these will stop working very soon
So old Nokia (+other) phones without LTE are just a (very) nice toy Smile
  • 1 0
@ice29: most of them go to the Caribbean where all the 'like houses' and scammers are.

I'm not sure I understand the high pivot for freeride application. Doesn't it make the bike a lot less poppy?
  • 28 1
no pedal kickback when stomping 40 ft drops ofc
  • 14 0
@bikingonbikes: freeride bikes of past had basically zero anti squat so kickback wasnt much of a thing.
soon WRP's new chainring adapter will take over the Ochain/high pivot. its black magic.

can freewheel both directions...

@HeatedRotor: Nice. Looks like it effectively does the same as a freecoaster bmx hub, just at the crank instead.
  • 1 0
 @HeatedRotor: that's amazing

@HeatedRotor: Similar to Intend's Rocksteady Magics

Would love to see the Spartan hp in Aluminum. Their Aluminum bikes are great value and so under rated.

 Purpose built Rampage machine.

Can anyone comment on jumping characteristics of a high pivot?
  • 35 0
Not me. I still biff getting over consecutive tree roots.
  • 3 0
I've spent some time on fury, range hp, supreme, and dreadnought. The range felt like it really wanted to stay on the ground, in a fast way. I wouldn't use any of the above bikes for a bunny hop contest, but the range required more oomph. With progressive early ramp up and lots of low speed, i imagine Zink had something to push off-of.
  • 4 0
@papaweelie: I def gta try the supreme someday...obviously 'the bike' of this era based on results and video of it.
  • 3 0
I've got a shore. it's not a massive difference, but maybe a little more stable.
  • 5 1
I've ridden the New GT, cannondale jekyll and the Range.
The GT is a bike id happily never ride again.
jekyl is pretty good because sensible reach. can be made quite progressive (id like to try a low pivot version of this bike)
Range is pretty much as @papaweelie said - very ground hugging. Takes a good chunk of effort to launch.

Something i noticed with them all: Much easier to ride flats on.

IMO im not sold on HP for anything other than a DH race bike

Just my opinion, so the whole grain of salt thing.

I had a supreme (27.5) and it was really stable jumping but not playful at all.
My YT Tues was significantly more playful.
  • 2 0
I had a Supreme SX- it didn’t “pop” off of roots or featurettes, but if it had a face, I could really launch.
  • 1 0
I found that I could run the bike a little stiffer and with a little more compression damping, and the suspension would still work over the bumps. I thought it was great for getting rowdy. That was on a Craftworks though, which is a really high pivot. Might not be quite as noticeable an effect on these mid-high pivots.
  • 4 4
You get -1 style point in jump comps because high pivots are ugly.
  • 3 0
I didn’t like it. The exaggerated rear centre growth felt nasty on lips, I stuck with it for a while but it never got to a point where I felt comfortable with it. Lovely on landings (obvs) and we all know how nice they are in chunky stuff but for freeride and general jumpy park riding I think a lower pivot works better - the ride is more intuitive under compressions and on the back wheel.
  • 1 0
@ThomDawley: This is the feedback I've heard from folks in person. What frame were you riding?
  • 1 0
 @ThomDawley:
I’m almost done building up my high pivot Trek Session (in 27.5 f/r) and I’ll be curious how it feels. The travel isn’t aggressively rearward like the Supreme and it has more progressive suspension. I’m hoping to find the perfect blend of huck and chunk.
  • 1 0
 @Muchogusto: that was the Supreme.
  • 2 0
@rallyimprezive: yeah it might just do that. Lately I’ve been considering what a high single pivot with a firm shock and maybe shorter travel would be like. But I’m going to try making a good old Horst link first with a 33% progressive curve and a slightly lowered pivot - not unlike the YT bikes. For me those are the nicest to jump and generally the most intuitive to ride. Obviously it’s gonna depend on your local terrain and riding style but I think we can generalise a bit here.

What was wrong with the GT. It’s a absolute sled when it’s get rough and felt fine to me in the air @HeatedRotor:
  • 1 0
@freeridejerk888: honestly.. i dont know, it just didnt feel great. only owned it for a month and messed with suspension alot but got nothing i liked back from it. probably just how i ride
  • 1 0
You own the current gen (not for sale to the public) fury? Or the old blue with yellow GT letters @HeatedRotor:
  • 1 0
 bout 3 fiddy
  • 4 2
They need to make a designated DH race bike again though.. Don't let Stevie down. Make the man proud Devinci!
We need a race bike too, not just a long travel Spartan look-alike. :/

I guess I won't be betting a 5th Devinci, swapping brand time!

Are you forgetting that the Wilson still exists?...
  • 1 0
 @ethanshredz for now it does…
  • 3 0
@ethanshredz: it doesn't still exist lol. They're scrapping the Wilson chief. Steve would not be thrilled
  • 2 0
The big news here is that shock...that is no regular PUSH 11.6R it's longer than the current biggest 65mm stroke they sell....looks like the 11.6 might finally be coming to the downhill bikes aswell.
  • 1 0
Definitely looks long like a 75 or even more
  • 2 0
I opened this thinking it was going to be some sort of slope style bike, but this is way better! Can’t wait to see what they make for him!
  • 4 0
Still on the Canfield cranks! Possibly his 155mm’s from rampage?
  • 3 0
How about the build on this thing, Looks like trickstuff brakes with shimano rotors, and Canfield cranks!
  • 3 0
Just so I'm clear, people are speculating on a photo from a Nokia flip phone from 2003. Yes?
  • 3 0
Looks great, Devinci just produce that and I'll take one thank you
  • 1 0
I guess it will be difficult to reinvent MTB suspension as they all look quite similar sonce 20 years. Kinematics have changed a lot but the looks are not so different
  • 1 0
This bike is not that different compared to new Trek high pivot session with high pivot, abp link but this design looks muuuuch more better
  • 2 0
Canfield cranks, maybe to get shorter than the usual short 165s?
  • 2 0
Sure looks like a water bottle mount
  • 2 0
even freeriders need to stay hydrated

I wanna hear more about this Nokia flip phone.

What bike is Kirk McDowall riding? His bike during the Canadian Open DH was covered up - doesn't he ride for DeVinci?
  • 2 0
He’s an engineer at Norco now. They are testing a new dh platform. There was an article about it a few weeks ago.

Gotcha. Good info !

 I like it already!

The Nokia comment deserves a bonus cheque at Christmas

Finally destroyed my Devinci Frantic. They don't make a free ride specific bike any more . The. Again no one does . Welded in Canada like this prototype. Does Devinci still sell some Al bikes welded locally?
  • 1 0
All of their higher end aluminum bikes are welded in Quebec. So yes.
  • 2 0
Almost every company on market makes a freeride bike, they're called "enduro" these days, but you're nuts if you're telling me a 180mm travel frame can't be ridden basically anywhere.
  • 1 2
@sherbet: my bike litteraly had a sticker on the chainstay that said For Free Ride . A sticker stating this .
No. no bike company makes a bike stated for free ride . None .
You can free ride on a hard tails if you like . Dirt jump with 29 inch
wheeled Enduro . Whatever turns your crank .
BTW wagon wheel Enduro bikes suck balls. They are not free ride bikes . They are plow bikes . Boring !
  • 2 0
I don't even know where to start with how stupid this comment is.

A sticker does not make a bike. The bike and the geometry thereof makes the bike.

You can do all that, but they're not good for it at times. Modern 27.5 enduro bikes are excellent at freeriding, with the proof in the pudding being shown everywhere from Joyride to Fest to Rampage.

27.5 is a fairly close to 26 in terms of diameter, and looking at what people can do on them, boring doesn't come to mind. If you can't look at a 180mm 27.5 bike and think of anything fun to do on it, that doesn't say anything about the bike, it says a lot about you. Almost every company in market is making a bike for this segment. It being slack does not deny it anything.
  • 1 2
@sherbet: fast is how we measure modern bikes . Occasionally a bike company talks about fun . Fun is jibbing. Fun is pumping , stoppies on steep slabs . Quite frankly that's above 80 percent of rides abilities. There is no money in plush short wheelbase bikes with small wheels . Wagonwheel plow bikes are what is being pushed .
Some of us want playful bikes not fast . As for rear pop from hi anti squat numbers . Sucks for my style of riding . Sorry but modrn bikes are very easy to ride. Easy to sell. They do not embrace free ride .
According to you I'm stupid and nuts .
As for calling people out your a sheep following trends . Maybe you did or didn't notice bike companies embracing aluminum frames again. 27.5 is actually coming back and yes sir anti squat is being scaled back to give some plushness that is definitely more fun. But probably not fast . I don't give a f*ck about Enduro racing . Enduro bikes are designed for Enduro racing not free ride jibbing .
Free ride bike :
Low anti squat numbers
Short wheelbase
Screw long front center I don't sit in my bike .
Ditch the heavy complicated dropper post
No free ride bikes are not being made . In fact it's not considered. Long travel plow bikes that are easy to ride with long wheelbase . Those sell.
DH bikes all about speed not free ride .
Yep I have tried modern plow bikes. They suck!

 Don't knock the Nokia.
  • 2 0
Nokia 3310 is the only phone known to be Rampage proof
  • 1 0
@ROOTminus1: I've seen so many people do so many brutal things to those phones and they just keep going over the years. You can drop kick one of those and it's still be okay
  • 1 0
My 3315 no longer works but only because the GSM network was turned off
  • 2 0
 Burner phones ftw
  • 1 0
@ROOTminus1: I used ones my old Nokia as a dartboard. It survived.

Once I dropped it into a puddle in the winter. And those days phones were not waterproof. It happened in a parking lot and the water was so deep and dark (because of road salt, oil, dust etc) that it took a while to find it. Back cover and battery had come off. I went to a nearby toilet and rinsed it with clean water and let it dry couple of days. And it worked!

When did Zink move to Devinci?

When he needed a better job just like all of us.
