CeramicSpeed Announces $669 OSPW X Upgrade for SRAM Transmission Derailleurs

Is it time to replace the pulley cage on your SRAM Transmission derailleur? If so, CeramicSpeed's OSPW X is a new (and very expensive) option, a $669 USD upgrade that claims to deliver increased drivetrain efficiency and improved durability, with a lifetime warranty to back that up.

Like the Danish brand's other OSPW (over-sized pulley wheel) systems, the OSPW X gets a larger lower pulley wheel, reducing the chain's angle of articulation as it enters the cage, thereby reducing overall friction. But, that's not CeramicSpeed's biggest claim, here. No, the main attraction of this cage upgrade is its lifetime warranty, made possible with the help of its "Active Debris Removal" (ADR) function.

Ceramic Speed OSPW X Details
• Oversized pulley wheel derailleur cage upgrade for SRAM Transmission
• Compatible with XX SL, XX, X0 & GX Eagle Transmission
• Upper Pulley Size: 14t
• Lower Pulley Size: 20t
• Active Debris Removal
• Alpha Disc Wheels
• Composite cage
• Fiber-reinforced composite pulley teeth
• Claimed weight: 110 grams
• Price: $669 USD / 579 €

This is essentially a dust cover that encloses the stainless steel bearing and its aluminum housing with a "bladed groove cover" that sits over it. The latter is said to "dynamically extract debris from the pulley wheel while it’s rotating". Off-road partnerships manager at CeramicSpeed says "it basically keeps everything running super fast, forever".

photo

Senior product manager, Paul Sollenberger, explains in more detail, "ADR is composed of two main parts. On each face, there is a precisely shaped stainless steel shield that locates on the bearing inner race and does not rotate. The second part is a unique fiber-reinforced composite polyamide material, the same material as the tooth profile, that is molded as part of the alloy Alpha disc pulley itself. The material passes through ports in the alloy disc ensuring that it is fixed in place and will not rotate or come apart from the pulley. The directional bladed profile rotates with the pulley and is the 'active' portion of the patent-pending Active Debris Remover technology. The bearing is pressed into the alloy portion of the Alpha disc for a secure fitment".

photo

For sure, the engineers could have used a double-lipped contact seal to keep contaminants away from the bearing, but they weren't happy with the friction this would add. We are told the precision fit of the ADR interface adds zero drag to the bearing or pulley wheel.

While the stock derailleur cage on all SRAM Transmission derailleurs has a 14t upper pulley and a 16t lower pulley, the CeramicSpeed OSPW X boasts a 14t/20t pairing. And, they're made of a fiber-reinforced composite, said to last longer than other composite pulley wheels, or aluminum versions.

The narrow-wide pulley teeth are co-molded with the two-piece aluminum discs that give the OSPW X its unique aesthetic. While the SRAM Transmission XX SL derailleur has a magic pulley that allows the teeth to continue rotating if a branch gets stuck in the wheel, the OSPW X has no need for anything of the sort. Given that the pulley wheels are gap-free, there's a greatly reduced chance of any wayward sticks causing a mechanical.

CeramicSpeed says the OSPW X requires minimal maintenance, perhaps only 2-3 times per year, dependent on riding habits. In the event of bearing function deterioration or the development of an issue that cannot be solved through basic maintenance (stripping, cleaning and re-assembling), CeramicSpeed will replace the pulleys. They also say that if anything happens to the cage while installed on the bike, it would also be covered for replacement.

This is the beauty of consumerism. There are like dozen of people, probably well educated, who dedicate their lives to make such useless sh*t just because there are people who will pay for it. It's hard to imagine the level of waste we are hitting here ...
  • 8 1
@naptime: I suppose SRAM is constrained to producing a product at a price that isn’t absurd.

Not that I think this thing will realistically think this will add anything to performance in any meaningful way what so ever.
  • 28 8
@naptime: I don't think it's necessarily true that SRAM and Shimano would have already done this if it was any good.

Big manufacturers are targeting a big audience. They have to consider that the visuals of a big pulley wheel may look off to some people - even if it's made of unicorn hair and weighs 1g this does look bigger and clunkier than the stock options.

They also have to hit certain price points for the whole package, and perhaps I'm being naively optimistic here but they may even have considered that a bigger pulley wheel will sit a bit closer to the rocks and roots that could damage it and decided the performance wasn't worth the risk.

This product is aimed at people who want the best performance, full stop. I have never tried and will never try it, so I can't say if it delivers on that, but that's clearly the aim.

Linkglide has been tremendously satisfying so far, I'm thinking I'm going to do some drivetrain swapping and move my XT HG+ drivetrain to my fatbike, so I can wear it out in the salty wetness of a chicago winter this season and standardize on linkglide across my trail, fat, commuter/utility bikes.

@Korbi777: My LBS started a box of broken SRAM and SHIMANO parts and I can tell you with evidence the SHIMANO box has about 100% more broken shit in it than the SRAM one. And that's coming from a sample pool where most MTB's today come spec'd with SRAM. It's really not an opinion, SRAM shit is waaay better.

Dumb customers. I had a guy buy a set of pulley wheels and install from me so that he'd be faster up the local climb. The next day he came back into the shop after riding them to boast about a 15 second pr on the 3 mile climb that the $700 pulley wheels definitely helped him achieve.

@jamesdad: $25,000 for speaker cables!?! Holy crap
  • 2 1
@PaulMurden: Pretty popular in the triathlon world, which makes mtb look a cheap sport.
  • 11 4
@scrawnydog: since a broken clutch is not replaceable with sram, most people ignore the fact that its not working. shimano hast everything as sparepaets, so when something breaks, you replace it. with the new transmission, every replacement part is more expensive than the whole shimano part. and on older sram there was no replacement. just trash and new. so ypu ride sram until nothing moves anymore, with shimano you replace the clutch for 8€.

  • 3 0
@thenotoriousmic: What do you mean "Shimano sells a fraction of what SRAM does?" Shimano's 2022 sales were $3.2 billion USD. And that's cycling only, not including Shimano's considerable fishing business. During that same time, SRAM's 2022 sales were $725 million. That's not even a knock on SRAM, it's just a fact that Shimano is bigger and sells A LOT more product to cyclists than SRAM.
  • 2 4
@CSharp: hambini is one to talk - looks quite likely he doesn’t have the PHD he claims, doesn’t have the patents he claims, hasn’t worked for the big companies he claims he has and in fact works at an engineering firm locally to him where he makes his bottom brackets with their equipment.

@TEAM-ROBOT: Sram massively outsells Shimano where it’s relevant to us though in the mid to high end mountain bike market. Every regular bike in existence comes with Shimano OEM and that’s where Shimano makes the majority of their money, think how many bikes Walmart sold today alone and another 20% from fishing.
  • 2 0
If you have some sort of sales numbers to back that up I'd love to see them, but that's just not what I'm seeing with my eyeballs. I see a lot of SRAM and a lot of Shimano on medium to high-end mountain bikes, such that I'd struggle to guess who's outselling who.

 @font style="vertical-align: inherit;">font style="vertical-align: inherit;">ShredDoggg /font>/font>: yes, it's the real
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: You may be right, but why is that? Not because SRAM is better, it is just more flashy and gets along better with the $10k bike vibe. Wireless drivetrains for $2k which are cool, but not really worth such money. So yeah, SRAM is a great dentist drivetrain not doubts about it. On the other hand they make just ok suspension which is everywhere only because OEM deals they enforce, which I think is the only reason you see so much SRAM on bike. They make flashy drivetrains, ok suspension and bad brakes but sell them cheap in OEM packages. Shimanno cannot compete with this, maybe bacause they don't want to really.

@mrfish: maybe its a flex for their industry customers?

@mgarrigan: That's how money gets spread, eh? That's how Youtube usually work - spread the message around, you get endorsements! Maybe if these companies sweetened the pot for Hambini and not threaten to sue him, they're get a sweeter roasting.
  • 1 3
@lkubica: Shimano can compete if they wanted, they could completely undercut sram in the oem market, like someone already said Shimano are worth five or six times as much as sram. They just don’t care about mountain biking anymore as it’s worth so little compared to what they make elsewhere. They don’t innovate anymore, they’re always late to the party with a substandard product and then look at their attitude towards e-bikes and bike technology, there’s money in that so they obviously care. They won’t even fix the things we’ve been complaining about now for over ten years mainly the poor brakes (random bite point / leaky pistons) and rear mechs that just fall to bits or the clutch fails.
  • 3 0
@thenotoriousmic: I think you need to look up some figures.

The bike division of shimano is 4 x the size of its fishing division - it represents over 80% of total turnover - not sure how that's split between MTB and road as they are strong in the road sector but it will still be hugely significant and an absolutely massive and vital part of the company revenue.

Shimano have always been slower to 'innovate' compared to SRAM, its always been their way, to say they dont care about MTB though is just complete and utter bilge, total shit.
  • 1 0
@justanotherusername: nope Shimano always came first and Sram followed up until the 1X era and Shimano haven’t really done much since not even a Saint rebrand and it’s only the MTB division that’s being neglected in General cycling, fishing, road and especially e-bikes they’re the same old Shimano, never late with a substandard product because they care unlike mountain bikes. Low end bicycles is where Shimano makes all its money, think how many bikes just one single Halfords / Walmart sold today. Every single one of those bikes had Shimano components. Now how many XT cranksets do you need to see before you start making that kind of money? Like I said if they cared they could easily wipe sram out of the mtb industry but obviously they don’t or they would have done.
  • 2 0
@thenotoriousmic: You mean Shimano 'came first' when SRAM's budget and reach was nowhere near it is now - about 10 years ago?

Do you have any factual information to back up your opinion at all - myself and others have some facts, you seem to bring only your personal opinion which is worthless.

A statement for you from 2021:

"Shimano invented the concept of "system components," a set of bike parts such as gear shifters and brakes. This increased Shimano's global brand power, earning it the nickname "the Intel of bicycle components." Shimano now holds a global market share of about 80% for bicycle drivetrains: At this year's Tour de France, 17 of the 23 participating teams use Shimano's parts"

I am sure you aren't ready to let fact override your feelings on this one and will come back with 'yea but the remaining 20% are all the performance models' or some other such shit but the truth is there in black and white.

Shimano do care, shimano do sell and no shimano couldnt 'wipe out' sram if it wanted to do so with the flick of a pen.
  • 1 0
@justanotherusername: lol, I can only assume you wasn’t riding ten years ago from that comment. Sram was still an evil faceless corporation then and many years before as well and I’m certainly not going to argue with someone who wasn’t even around in Shimano heyday but I do like a laugh so in your opinion you tell me why Shimano is neglecting their mtb division, doing the absolute minimum with substandard products and letting a company 1/5th of its size run away with the entire market?
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: 'Evil faceless corporation' - good god grow up.

Been riding for well over 20 years, sorry to burst that bubble - SRAM's turnover 10 years ago was half what it is now and its reach in the high end bike world much less.

Why are Shimano losing some of the market to SRAM? I don't know, SRAM are maybe more innovative, more likely to take risks, have targeted more specific areas of the market, are able to provide a full build kit to OEM inc forks, shock etc.

Who beat who to the e-bike market? - SRAM have used brose but Shimano have their own, do they not?

Is the position 'shimanoz downt care animore' as you say - absolutely not. Are they neglecting their MTB division - the 80% coverage of the market says not, regardless how you 'feel' because you have been a notorious bad mtb boy for long time.

Companies grow, companies fade, companies innovate, companies stagnate, companies move in all sorts of directions due to culture, strategy and expertise.
  • 2 0
@justanotherusername: Shimano is losing some of the market to Sram because Sram makes objectively better products than Shimano in the drivetrain sector. I work at a bike shop and find that the higher end Shimano drivetrains are clunky and slow, and the lower end drivetrains are smooth yet still a little slow. The Sram drivetrains on the other hand are fast, significantly smoother, and quieter than all Shimano drivetrains regardless of if it's SX or XX1 AXS. Shimano still makes better brakes in my opinion (I live in an area where stopping power is more important than modulation), but their brakes are more expensive then Sram brakes (at least for the nice ones), so Shimano is probably losing some of the market to Sram there too.
  • 1 0
The clunkiness of Shimano drivetrains is amplified on their 12 speed drivatrains and gets better as you go down to 11 speed, 10 speed, 9 speed, etc. I am only talking about mountain bike drivetrains by the way. Shimano road groupsets are fantastic and at a minimum comparable to the Sram road groupsets.
  • 1 0
@cookiemonster615: Shimano brakes are more expensive than SRAM? Not in Europe, here, Shimano brakes are chaper and better.
As for the drivetrain, I will most probably go CUES 11 speed next. I understand that "high end" (i.e. pricey as f*ck) is better from SRAM, but what I (and most people really) need is a good value long lasting drivetrain. Being "slow" means nothing, we re not racing XC here. What I need is a cassette with good spacing, without aluminium cogs and for a reasonable price and rear mech with adjustable clutch, so I can make my bike quiet and minimize clutch influence on suspension. That's it. Nothing more.
  • 2 1
@justanotherusername: it was a rhetorical question, i just wanted to laugh at your response and was not disappointed. I already told you why, it’s a deliberate decision. The company with five or six times the resources could outcompete sram if it wanted to.
  • 2 0
@cookiemonster615: literally every bike that’s been sold in the last ten years are fully speced with Sram you have to go out of your way to find completes with Shimano components. The only reason is because sram offer better oem deals because shimano doesn’t really care anymore.
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: 'My feelings are betterer than your facts' - I absolutely know what Shimano is up to, I am notoriouuuuussss!
  • 1 0
@lkubica: That CUES 11 speed is actually really nice, especially for its pricepoint. Only gotten to ride it once, but I would recommend it even just based off of my 5 minute ride on it. Definitely the best Shimano mtb drivetrain I've ridden. Decently fast shifting too. I do understand people's desire to have a longer lasting and more durable drivetrain, I'm just looking for that top tier performance that I'll only get from Sram.

Interesting that you guys have different pricing over in Europe as far as brakes go. Maybe Shimano sells more there so they can lower the prices and still get the same revenue.
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: 'Literally every bike'...... 'Shimano doesnt care anymoreeeez!'
  • 2 2
@cookiemonster615: Shimano is found the bargain bin in the UK. You could easily get a set of XT brakes for less than it would cost you for one Code RSC. Chain reaction are currently selling 2 piston SLX for £30 in the current climate. Nobody’s going to pay sram prices for Shimano so the only way it’s getting sold if it’s heavily discounted.
  • 4 1
@thenotoriousmic: This is total BS, even Deore level Shimano brake is better than anything below RSC from SRAM. I cannot imagine anyone buying aftermarket brake from SRAM which is not Code RSC. For any money, they just don't brake. Ah yes, they call it modulation, the biggest BS ever.
  • 3 2
@lkubica: he’s full of absolute shite.
  • 1 3
@justanotherusername: You got a thing for public humiliation? Well I’m more than happy to pull your pants down in public so everyone can laugh at you again. SLX brakes are currently at £30 on chain reaction, the much more popular Code R costs £110. To avoid any more humiliation I suggest to research the concept of supply and demand.
  • 1 1
@lkubica: that’s just your opinion sram sells more brakes that every other manufacturer combined and the code r would be its best seller and despite that they’re still on par price wise with XT. It sells well and holds its value unlike most Shimano brakes which need huge discounts to get sold.
  • 1 0
@thenotoriousmic: CRC is in administration you fool, they are selling almost everything off super cheap, the brake price holds no relevance to anything.

You really are completely full of shite.
  • 3 0

@justanotherusername

Guys... regardless of who's right or wrong here.. it's time to step away from the keyboard and move on
  • 1 0
@justanotherusername: that’s why I used chain reaction as an example, jeez you are stupid and that was not your task. You were supposed to learn about supply and demand and then apply what you’ve learnt to the two examples I’ve given you from the same store. The much more popular Code R which costs £110 and the SLX brake which costs £30. Good luck.
  • 2 0
@n734535: I'm actually enjoying this. Very amusing
  • 1 0
 @cookiemonster615: agreed, it’s great fun.
  • 2 0
@thenotoriousmic: I’m stupid for understanding that when a company is in administration it sells items at vastly reduced prices that hold no relevance to normal retail pricing and that CRC often get oem / grey import items allowing them lower sales pricing vs RRP?

Tell me you have no idea about retail and the bike industry without telling me you have no idea.

‘Me notorious, me feel, fact no good, me right, me a warlock’.
  • 1 1
@justanotherusername: Yes that’s one of the many reasons why you’re stupid the other is because you’re clearly unable to follow simple instructions in order to complete basic tasks. The topic is supply and demand. You have 6 hours to show us what you’ve learnt.

The people who buy these products know exactly what they're buying, which is marginal gains. The pulleywheels don't do nearly as much as waxing your chain or getting the ceraimic bb, but if you've done both of those things and you still want a little more performance, this cage system is the next best move.

@cookiemonster615: Marginal gains have to be measurable gains-as in you'd need to validate that you go any faster with this cage on than the OEM unit at the same power output. Pretty sure that there would not be a statistically significant increase in speed with this "upgrade" so no actual measurable marginal gain. Just like expensive speaker cables, or almost all bolt-on "high performance" car parts.

There's also going to be people who buy thus just because they want something new and/or unique.

"unique fiber-reinforced composite polyamide material" Mate, It's a glass or CF filled nylon. That material is available in filament form for 3D printing for about £50/kg at the low end. The brass neck of CeramicSpeed to charge £530 for a filled-nylon mech cage with a stainless steel bearing.

Look, I can see the benefits of some of the overpriced CeramicSpeed stuff in elite level road and track riding. However, in mountain biking, drivetrain friction and drag is nowhere near as significant a limiting factor to performance as it is in road/track bikes. Suspension kinematics, traction and other factors would be much more significant to mountain biking performance.

In terms of "Active Dirt Removal". Just wash your bike vaguely decently and use normal jockey wheels. Assuming £20 for a pair of SRAM jockey wheels, you could buy 26 sets for the price of 1 of these cages. Far be it from me to tell other people how to spend their money, but this just seems an outrageous price for a such minimal gain in performance.

I agree that is not really something anyone should or could buy, full stop. But it is cool, unlike any other major motorsport, that the 1% of the 1% trick parts, is offered to the public.

I found an unsealed ceramic-bearing pulley wheel on Amazon once for ~$15 or so. It was great. Super low-drag, and to clean it you just took it off, hosed out the bearing, and put it back. Unfortunately it got bashed into a rock and bent the pulley wheel itself.
  • 10 0

@bluenext: he’s not a fantastic engineer he is a loudmouth shit who often declares product as being terrible when it is more than fit for purpose by applying aerospace level requirements - which bikes aren’t, most frames he ‘ribs’ work really well.

He then uses the loud mouth platform to sell horrendously overpriced bottom brackets and bearings -he’s a nasty piece of work hiding behind the character he has created, he happily went after a journalist once publicly questioning her fertility etc, lovely chap who gives f*ck all of substance back to the industry.

  • 10 1
@justanotherusername: To me, part of the reason he is so hard on some companies is that they are almost false advertising. Or claiming things with no data behind it. He also criticizes some frames for not being perfect, when they cost $4000-5000. For that cost, they should be.

His own products are expensive, but if you get one, you know it'll be nearly "perfect". And it seems like they are made in very small batches.

@Canadmos: Perfect according to him? Its easy to be a very loud mouthed, pretty repulsive reviewer of other peoples work when you don't have any real skin in the game and you can hide behind the 'in the aerospace, moneys no object industry blaaa blaa' viewpoint.

It would be great to see a Hambini made frame, at a cost comparable to others (come on, there aren't many $5000 frames he as reviewed) then we can see what true perfection is, pretty much the whole bike industry fails in this guys eyes - but the truth is it would be 3x the cost as it would take 3x the time to produce and the reality is it wouldn't ride any better, it just wouldn't.

The stuff he makes is a piece of piss to be 'perfect' - its a tube made on a lathe with a bearing pressed in, whoopie do.
  • 3 0
@Canadmos: it isn't that hard to get a bottom bracket to a proper sizing. just ream it to size. winspace makes a near-perfect frame in hambinis opinion and its only $1500.

@justanotherusername: as someone who works in aerospace and sees the massive costs and how long everything takes you are correct, its completely unrealistic to have aerospace tolerances without hugely increasing costs. Having said that , I also don't think its too much to ask that a frame at least has a bb shell that is aligned and the correct size , especilay at the price points some frames are these days
  • 2 1
@justanotherusername: if you are paying more than 10k for a bike is it unreasonable to expect the bottom bracket to at least be round?

Niiiiiiccee, I thought a $1000 derailleur would already have the best cage/pulley design but I guess the decades of engineering knowledge of Sram are not enough to decide what works best for their own sh1t.

Ceramic speed is litteraly a metastasis in the bike industry. They are selling dreams since their beginning.

The cage/pulley looks injection molded and this is an inexpensive process no matter what the composite is. OneUp had the v1 dropper lever in the same kind of material and it was cheap.

The brainless sheeps who will buy these at $600 are getting fist f*cked HARD.

Pinkbike, we need a “The Most Expensive Mountain Bike” project where you build literally THE most expensive thing possible. Somebody make a spec list. Start with an Sworks Levo frame and add the E-Eewings and take it from there
  • 1 0
That would be fun, although I think it was already done a couple of years ago.
But that frame you propose is not the most expensive at all.
The Eewings were the most expensive cranks a few years back but now there are other brands above. Sturdy Cycles, for instance, have a 3D printed titanium crankset for over £1K. They look better than the eewings, and after more than a year with them, no scratches on them.

Actually saw someone with one of Ceramicspeed's oversized pullies at a local bike shop. (Don't ask me which model, do I look like I know?). Guy who owns it, according to the shop owner, is a retired gentlemen, has custom painted bikes throughout his fleet and ride 4 days a week, is at a stage of his life where money isn't a problem and just wants to focus on his only hobby - bikes. Same guy also brought custom carbon fiber molded fox suspension top caps and dials. Yeah, the ones you have screwed on to the top of your fork stanchions that are probably aluminum. Was talking with the shop guys after he dropped them off to be fitted to his xc bike, and they were about 5 grams difference - 8 grams for his carbon one vs 13 grams for the stock aluminum one (iirc, this was a couple months back). So yes, there are people buying it, just not you or me though

People calling this a scam is the most hilarious thing. People who buy this know exactly what they're buying. No one is being scammed. Everyone recognizes that this does less for performance than laying off the Twix bars.

  • 1 0

Does this make it faster to change out the rear wheel when you get a flat?
If it does then Pidcock might want one.
  • 1 0

I have broken 1 derailleur (that I can think of) in over 5 years. That was an AXS that just quit shifting, for no obvious reason.
  • 1 0
Downvoted by people who "mountain bike" on trails wide enough that they never clip a derailleur or handlebar......and might buy this product.
  • 1 0
@wyorider: or people who know how to maneuver there bikes properly through tight sections.
  • 1 0
@cookiemonster615: 'properly' sounds like a ton of fun. Slow n' steady wins the race, eh bud?
  • 1 0
@CarbonShmarbon: not eating it wins the race. Your skill level determines the speed at which you should move through a tighter section.
  • 1 0
@cookiemonster615: if you ride multipe times a week on trails with ruts that run knee deep shit happens
