Crankworx Cancels Summer Series New Zealand After Christchurch Fires

Feb 20, 2024
by Ed Spratt

Crankworx has announced that it has cancelled the full schedule of events for the upcoming Summer Series New Zealand.

Following fires in the Port Hills of Christchurch that burnt through 650 hectares of land in the area, the Crankworx organisers have cancelled the event originally scheduled to take place from March 1 to 3.

bigquotesKia ora everyone!

As many of you know, the recent fire in the Port Hills of Christchurch has had a significant impact on the @christchurchprk (CAP), the scheduled venue for Crankworx Summer Series New Zealand from
March 1-3, 2024.

Firstly, we want to express our gratitude to the emergency responder crews and our mates at CAP for their swift and tireless efforts in response to the fires. The situation remains in the hands of the fire service and the full impact on the Port Hills, CAP, and surrounding areas is yet to be fully determined.

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce the complete cancellation of Crankworx Summer Series New Zealand 2024.

Despite exhaustive efforts by the Crankworx team, the Christchurch Adventure Park (CAP) crew, and our friends at ChristchurchNZ, we have been left with no choice due to the extensive damage to the courses and ongoing safety concerns on the site, making it impossible to proceed with the event as planned for March 1-3, 2024.

We are incredibly saddened by this outcome and want to assure you that our thoughts and support remain with the teams on the ground who are working tirelessly in firefighting and containment efforts.

Our hearts go out to each of you as we navigate this challenging time together!

If you can, please support Christchurch Foundation’s Port Hills regeneration efforts - link in our bio.

Please note that @crankworxrotorua remains scheduled for March 16-24, 2024.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, while we navigate these uncertain times.

Surely that is the fault of the UCI which try to kill the sport.

I knew everything would go sideways after the ban of PPCC on 2019

@mr-fabio: The ban on pay-per-click really affected many peebles

Bummer. Hope nature bounces back and the park has insurance.

Sounds like the park is mostly okay but there's just not enough time to make sure before the event. It's the timing that's the problem.

There are plenty of other places that can hold an event like this. But not with ~10 days notice.

Damn shame. I hope the perpetrators are caught and brought to swift justice.

f*ck me that's so sad. CAP is such an amazing thing for Christchurch and it's absolutely gutting that it's been hit by fires twice now. Even more gutting to think that they were deliberate. Who does that, and why?

To be fair, no evidence has been found to determine either fire was deliberate. That said, there are a lot of scummy c*nts in CHCH that would be better off extinguished, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was arson.

Canterbury is very dry over the summer so it wouldn't take a lot on a norwest day to get the place burning. I imagine someone being careless/stupid is the most likely scenario. There is no shortage of people that fall into that category.

 Arson?

 No son of mine.

Didnt the CCP burn down in its first season operating due to wild fires? The fires might be caused by man but arson might be a big stretch.

@paulskibum: in 2017 two fires joined into one. 2nd probably arson , first possibly arson or electrical fault.
