Day 1 Randoms - Eurobike 2022

Jul 13, 2022
by Ed Spratt
Eurobike has left Friedrichshafen for 2022 and today marked the opening of this year's show at the new venue in the center of Frankfurt. Just like with most trade shows this year supply chains are limiting what brands have available, but here's what we found on the first day.

photo
Bold were showing off its updated Linkin bike.

photo
photo
Through either luck or really good planning the bike's color perfectly matches the new RockShox Lyrik.

photo
Nino Schurter will be after one of these for this Sunday's XC World Cup.

photo
Tag Metals has a new direct mount stem launching soon as well as 50mm rise bars.

photo
photo
photo
Royal was showing off loads of updates to its current lineup of clothing. Some of the highlights include new red stitching on its pants that is easy to pick so you can make the legs longer if you want, and more use of sustainable materials across the range.

photo
photo
High-tech battery holding solutions were on show today.

photo
Subtle new colour options for 100%'s apparel.

photo
Knog has launched a new bike tracker that attaches to your bottle mounts. Once it has been set up any movement of the bike sets off an 85-decibel alarm and sends a text to your phone. It can also act like an Air Tag and allow tracking through the ‘Find My Network’ features on Apple devices.

photo
photo
Enduro Bearings were featuring its stainless steel bottom brackets that are 'guaranteed for life'. At the stand, there was a Shimano bottom bracket for comparison with a sizeable difference in the ball bearing size between the two.

photo
What will the banana look like by the end of the show? Will they swap it for a new one each day? Or was this just someone's lunch?

photo
The award for the most interesting bike at the show has to go to the Nicolai running the Lal Bikes' Supre drivetrain.

photo
photo
It's even more intriguing to look at in-person.

photo
That can only go well...

photo
photo
Onza were showing off two fast-rolling XC tires with the Svelt and Cairns.

photo
photo
Launched this week, Hayes' Dominion T4 brakes were on display. Hayes claim it saves around 100 grams over the A4 brakes. We also saw the T2, two piston version of these brakes.

photo
photo
iXS were all-in on the dungarees and one-piece suits.

photo
A cool-looking custom Manitou Mastodon Pro

photo
photo
Topeak has added Air Tag compatibility to its Ninja Cage Z and Cagemount. It also has the option to just mount an Air Tag as well.

photo
We spotted Gamux's prototype World Cup bike as we explored the halls. The bike uses a Pinion gearbox and features a 63-degree headangle and 460mm reach. Currently, the bike weighs 18.5kg (40.1 lb) in a mullet setup.

Scott and Bold are really working hard to create the most proprietary and worst serviceable bike of all times. Thank god someone invented the cable through headset shit, else they would've had to come up with that aswell
  • 26 3
 Are they the new Cannonade?
  • 19 9
If you think this isn't on purpose I have some news for you. Making bikes hard to service from a home mechanic just closes the loop for them just like Auto Dealers and Phone companies tried. There will need to be a right to repair laws for bikes soon.

@OnTheRivet: hmm bikes are a little different because most of the components come from different manufacturers. A frame company don't have anything to do with servicing the rear shock. Of course individual companies can do it internally on their own products, but I'm not sure how a frame maker would benefit from deliberately making the shock harder to access. In this case I think it's just putting form before function, which is not what I would want in a bike but it's not particularly sinister either.

I don't expect Scott's customers to make service themselves, neither Scott does I guess

@OnTheRivet: And the US will be the last country to adopt that law if it comes down to it

Bought a Nicolai/Geometron, do not regret it. Literally built to be as easy to deal with as possible. All cables fixed to the outside of the frame, all bearings press in enduro units, and ultimately customisable.

And rockshox battling fox for ugliest color fork.

Oh, we're supposed to just ignore the new RockShox Totem hiding in plain site in the fourth pic?
  • 2 0
finally back to the good stuff

Man I scrolled through like three times looking for the rumored fork. Then I finally found the “Totem”. Ha.

This gave me whiplash...and then disappointment

@NoahColorado Dammit! Had me going there...

I hate you. Also, we can be friends.
  • 1 0
You had us all running circles. Touché

That Knog bike tracker caught my eye. Seems like a simpler and more affective solution to tracking your bike when compared to the other things I've seen recently. If not too pricey upon release, I might snag one
  • 5 0
I’m intrigued as well. As long as setup and removal are pretty quick for the owner but not the thief. I could see myself throwing this on my bike in the garage after each ride, or on the rack when I stop for lunch, just for some extra peace of mind.
  • 7 0
On their website, it costs 95 AUD, so $65 USD, and the alarm is armed or disarmed from bluetooth on your phone. Seems pretty reasonable imo
  • 5 0
Seems like a large mfg should purchase the IP and add it to the SWAT product line. Just saying....
  • 4 0
Yeah I'm not sure about the form factor (that looks like it makes your water bottle mounts no longer capable of holding a bottle? Or if it sandwiches in between, it won't work for some bike where the bottle *just* fits).

Concept-wise it is awesome though. Hidden under the seat or something would be great.
Arm/disarm from your phone. Awesome.
  • 5 2
A bike alarm. That will receive the same attention as a home or car alarm. Ie. none. And if anyone does react, most likely they will just spectate.
  • 5 0
@ilovedust: it pings your phone, though.
  • 2 1
@ilovedust: it also attracts the thief to its presence, so they'll remove it or smash it, rendering the airtag useless
  • 3 0
@ilovedust: I work at an office were sometimes bikes get stolen. There's a courtyard that is used as a bike parking area. If the alarm goes of I would assume that I'd be at the bike parking area quick enough. I think it makes a lot of sense if you are close by.
  • 3 0
@ilovedust: To some extent I agree. It doesn't necessarily deter a thief but makes the chancer (which most are) panic into thinking, "have I got enough time now".
  • 1 0
@KennyWatson: If they make them fit in between I'll get at least two

 1. Randoms are always the best bit of any interbike/eurobike/sea otter etc coverage
2. I never thought snot green would actually look good
3. Who the f*ck is Roy?!?
  • 4 0
That color got old the second time I looked at it.
  • 2 0
Boxxer red was a much better colour for the Lyrik
  • 28 3
@edspratt Levy's going to be pissed about the Nino disrespect.
  • 4 0
 That was pretty harsh...ouch
  • 4 1
I laughed my way through the article after reading the mirror caption, well done! And ending with the Gamux. Don't know why, but I think that bike is so cool!
  • 22 1
There better be a park version of that Bold. But in the end it doesn't even matter.

"Why would anyone wear lycra mountain biking? It looks so stupid."

*shows up to trails wearing dungarees.........
  • 12 1
Disappointing. Where are the folding cargo bikes with ABS, where are the downhill trikes. Instead we get some fool taking photos of taped up battery hatches and a banana. I want a refund.
  • 20 3
Give it time - this is only day one. I'm sure Ed & crew will track down those tandem DH trikes eventually.
  • 3 0
The banana is a front. That was actually another taped up battery hatch.
  • 12 0
Is that Linkin meant for park?
  • 4 0
one step closer to the park

Seems like a guaranteed wedgie to me.

 @BiNARYBiKE: Mr Mooseknuckle
  • 6 0
 I think that's a Mastodon not a Mattoc
  • 1 0
 Definitely

Apple really need to do a version of the airtag where you can plug in an external antenna, so then you could have an antenna wire embedded in the top layer of the e.g. the underside of the downtube and the airtag itself hidden inside the frame (and accessed via the snack hatch).

Essentially any solution that makes the antenna only removable by destroying the frame and the airtag only accessible with a load of faff (but still accessible so its battery can eventually be changed).

Ebike motor makers could be building them into the bike electronics too.

Gamux bike is heavy. Also beautiful.
  • 1 0
Clothing probably not meant for Mountainbiking?

- white, lightgrey, rose
- too short legs
- flimsy looking like the jerseys or way too warm but still not useful against the elements like those flannels or the bright colored dungarees

Is this for riding bropeds to the next cafe?
Or very environmental friendly single-use and throw away when dirty clothing?

for answers (or more questions) about the taped banana, see: Maurizio Cattelan, "Comedian", Art Basel
  • 2 0
Hilarious! So it is actually a 120.000$ banana!
  • 3 0
I knew it was only a short matter of time before MTB onesies became a thing…. *sigh*
  • 1 0
that bold bike is on of the most agressive looking setups ive ever seen. Tops the Nicolai bike or at same level. Cant believe that 6 months ago my bike was my favorite GOD DAM!
  • 3 4
Tucking all the bits away looks cool, sucks in every other way. I've learned to fish cables through frames. I've never had a problem with creaky press-fit BBs, but hiding the rear shock and tucking the cables and hoses in the bars and headset is just a PITA.

This is design for a look over optimal engineering. Wish more companies would build bikes to function first, look cool (or whatever) second.

Then again, looking at the PB comments, loads of Gumbys have raging hardons for bikes that look good first...........
  • 1 0
Why is the Gamux rocking a pair of 203mm rotors? Why aren’t they showcasing it with the proto-220mm Hayes rotor they were testing earlier? Smile
  • 2 0
Not enough to hide the cables, now they have to hide the shock too. What's next, hiding brake rotors?
  • 1 0
the new Scott Genius/ransom looks good.
as long as it comes out with scott on the brand itll be killer, dont let scott ruin the geo or start adding their own crap.
  • 7 5
Not a fan of that Rockshox green.
  • 2 0
Really? I want my bicycle's aesthetics to call to mind a nice hot bowl of split pea soup with ham. Nothing says "peak performance" like boiled peas! I wish they'd anodize the stanchions that color too.
  • 2 0
Me either. I hope to hell nobody buys it. It’s truly horrific.
  • 2 0
Manitou Sherman is baaaaaaaaaack!!! Well, only in graphics...
  • 2 0
@edspratt i think the onza tires are named svelt and CANIS (not cairns).
  • 1 0
You're right Smile and it's a new one
  • 2 0
Manitou with a throwback to the Sherman. Nice.

That supra thing is gonna be on point when some brand hide the freewheels and behind a carbon swingram...

"dungarees and one-piece suits" IXS can just go get in the f*cking sea with that!
  • 2 1
No mentioning of the name of the bike in the first picture?
  • 12 0
 Its called the linkedin
  • 7 1
@taskmgr: do you have a link? All I find is a website full of yuppie headshots

I saw an aluminum version with a 35 silver in a shop these days, 2.500.-€.

Please offer the Manitou Circus in Camo as well!
  • 3 2
Likely a Banana for scale reference

The painter asked which color they wanted for the show bike, he could match anything they like…
  • 1 0
Anyone ridden the Mara Pro that's on the Gamux rig?
  • 3 0
Lots of people have, but are busy still riding it - that’s why they don’t share expirience! Big Grin
Most people say it’s a pretty lovely shock - some small hick-ups in the first batch when it was a new model, but Manitou were fast to make the needed small changes for it to perform flawlessly.
  • 1 0
I've had a great time on the one I have for the past year or so. The base tune it comes with has plenty of room to dial it in to your preferences. I have it paired with a Mezzer Pro on the front and they complement each other perfectly. I also clocked the cheater lever on it so it can't leave party mode. I don't get along with climb switches very well lol.
