PRESS RELEASE: iXS Downhill Cup

The season is just around the corner and we are looking at a packed racing calendar. The iXS European Cup is a continental racing series with seven races in six different countries, making it the springboard for the World Cup.

2024 will be an extremely important season for the iXS European Downhill Cup. According to rumours, the World Cup will become more elite and therefore the entry requirements will become stricter. This makes it all the more essential to have a challenging series that can be seen as a feeder. Not only prestigious titles are awarded, but also important points for the world rankings, as all races are classified as C1.

iXS EDC #1 Losinj (CRO) | April 26-28

The event starts in mid-April in Losinj, Croatia. The island in the Mediterranean will be the perfect setting for an initial assessment of the participants' level of performance. The former World Cup course with its special character will show who has worked hard during the winter.

iXS EDC #2 Lenzerheide (SUI) | June 21-23

Another well-known location will follow in June. The field of participants will be travelling to Lenzerheide in the beautiful Swiss Alps. Major races, including the World Championships, have taken place on the course and so the second round will once again attract a lot of attention. Nevertheless, the race will offer the typical relaxed flair of the European Cup, so there will also be time to relax by the lake not far from the finish area.

iXS EDC #3 Panticosa (ESP) | July 19-21

The third race takes the iXS European Cup to Spain for the first time. Incidentally, this location is also a former World Cup venue, as it hosted a Grundig World Cup back in 1996. The high altitude location near the French border offers a tough course with a beautiful view. This trip will also be something special for the Racement crew, as they won't be heading back to the headquarter afterwards, but rather straight to France after a short detour to one or two bike parks and a small excursion to the sea.

iXS EDC #4 Les Deux Alpes (FRA) | July 26-28

The fourth venue is an old acquaintance of the series. From 2014 to 2016, the European Cup was held in Les Deux Alpes, France, the former Crankworx location. However, it will not be returning to the course used back then, but the extremely fast 'Fury' track with an altitude difference of over 650 meters will demand the riders' full concentration.

iXS EDC #5 Maribor (SLO) | August 23-25

The series returns to Eastern Europe with the fifth round. None other than Maribor is on the program. The Slovenian metropolis with around 100,000 inhabitants has often been referred to as the World Cup's favorite venue, as the course on the local mountain is tough, but still always delivers a good dose of fun.

iXS EDC #6 Verbier (SUI) | September 13-15

For the penultimate race, the field of participants returns to Switzerland, but this time to the French-speaking part. Verbier in Valais is another tough challenge. The course, entitled Tires Fire, starts at over 2,000 meters above sea level and will cause the riders to break out in a sweat. The best way to see the scale is in Justine Welzel's and Adam Brayton's track preview:

iXS EDC #7 Abetone (ITA) | September 27-29

And the crowning glory will be a trip to Tuscany in the fall. Everyone knows that the Italians are crazy about cycling and this will once again be evident at this race. The spectacle is prepared with great attention to detail and this event marks the worthy conclusion to a long season. Whoever ends up at the top of the podium here has truly earned the prestigious title of European Cup winner.

Just need redbull to broadcast this with Warner and it'll be better than the worldcups.

 haha true, venues are sick
  • 20 1
To be fair the broadcasts of the Tassy hardline and crankworx Rotorua weren't that great. The commentating was good but the camera coverage was not better than the word cup last year.

@hayden19: at least there was coverage and it was free! But I get what you're saying.

@hayden19: GCN would fail a college level photography course with their horrible performance filming XC.

The one race I watched they filmed the race from behind spectators with their heads in frame. They were riding a loud motorcycle, behind the spectators for some reason, like it was the Tour. It was a beautiful trifecta of Spectators and Trees blocking the view with a sidedish of loud gasoline powered engine.

I was kind of under the impression Redbull wasn't filming those legs because they were next to impossible to get a professional looking product from. GCN has never had an issue with a lack of professionalism and integrity so this role suits them.

Yes, these races need to be streamed, otherwise what value do racers/ sponsors get? Until MTB racing gets non World Cup races streamed, it's going nowhere.......It's 2024, not 2004....

That's why we see few non industry sponsors......lack of exposure. Instead they go to the road world where there's racing streamed almost every week from February to October.

@Cheddar420: I watched all the DH and XC racing last year and this in no way reflects my viewing experience. Which race did you watch?
  • 2 0
@Cheddar420: GCN didn't film anything, FYI
  • 1 0
@paulskibum: would have been the first or second race of the season.
  • 1 0
@Cheddar420: Nove Mesto was first race - its a regular destination and well set up for filming the race - I watched the highlights back and there is no evidence of the footage you allude to. Second race was Lenzerheide and same is true for the XCO there - lots of drone footage and platform based cameras tracking the action well.

Granted I watched the highlights so maybe I missed the one section you thought represented the whole terrible race footage.

@paulskibum: I'm sure they aren't putting a shot that's 75% crowd and trees in their highlights.

99.9% it was lenzerheide. Would have been a free broadcast because I don't pay those clowns for nothin.

Everyone was mocking the coverage at the time. It's funny that now there's people that defend it.

@Cheddar420: I have always defended it - I have not seen a single Discovery/GMBN broadcast I considered to be of lesser quality than the Redbull (commentary not factored in). I kept hearing about dubbed over sound and other bullshit that I had not in any way noticed. Made me wonder if people are watching something other broadcast.

It is good to see the IXS series remaining and embracing their role this way.It is a great place for privateer, up and coming riders and even pro riders who do not manage to break into the top 30 in WC to get points, but also to put programs together and try and sell them to companies. The calendar and venues are great.

At least iXS are honest about this being a European series.

(Are you listening UCI?)
  • 4 0
Slovenia is in Central Europe my guy, not Eastern Europe.
  • 1 0
Love Tire's Fire in Verbier. The camera does not do justice to how sketchy some of those rock gardens are!
  • 1 0
 What's the prize money like?

If money is the most important thing, you should switch to the professional series. Hey wait...
  • 1 0
@casey79: Price Money scheme for the EDC is actually:
1 1.000 €
2 800 €
3 550 €
4 400 €
5 250 €
Total 3.000 €

The one you got is for the iXS DHC which is more of the german national series
  • 2 1
It's Mali Losinj, and it's in the Adriatic.... minor details.
  • 1 0
Not as simple. Lošinj is the island, Mali Lošinj (mali = small) is the larger town and Veli Lošinj (veli = big) is the smaller town where the finish of the DH track is. And Adriatic Sea is a part of the Mediterranean Sea, so... Smile
