Eurobike was overpowered with the presence of everything electric and we searched the halls for some of the weird, strange and obscure electric-powered bikes at this year's show.
If you look closer you will see Hercules has branded each apple.
Using power tool batteries for these bikes will never not be a really cool idea.
Not to be confused with the new Msisle
Hardtail, drop bars, rigid fork and MTB tires. We are not sure what they were going for with this.
Greyp are normally a shoe-in for the weird e-bike round-ups, but this bike is almost disappointingly normal.
Peak Eurobike right here.
These e-bike weights are getting out of hand.
There were plenty of Totems on show, just none at the booth you would want.
Despite seeing this last year, I'm still not sure who this bike is for. E-country could definitely catch on though.
People do say e-bikes are the new golf.
I don't know what this does but it's definitely unique.
When you give up trying to hide the motor and just go full moto.
The Ampyre off-road eScooter is even wilder when you see its full glory in-person.
You see these e-country and the like strapped to the back of every retirees campervan/RV in mainland Europe. An hour of light trail riding after breakfast and the battery means you're not pushing it everywhere. Step through good for the dodgy hips. Good for them
We people that sweat theair lungs out of their chest and love risking banging their full face helmet clad head into trees are, surprinsingly, a niche market. Middle age, well salaried chaps amount for a much bigger pool of money, for a longer period of time.
I see them on this side of the pond too. A bunch of buddies parents/in-laws have them as well.
I visited St George a few months back, which is an "active retirement community" hotspot and went for a hike with the kids. I think we were passed by at least 15-20 folks on ebikes like those, many of them couples in their late 50's - maybe early 70's.
I sold a lot of old people bikes that were similar to this. they want a full suspension eMTB for unpaved trails but they can't swing their leg over a toptube. if we had this available we would have sold a number of them.
@hmstunaI: I know that's why people are buying them, but given their use, a suspension saddle/seatpost would be a better fit, and significantly cheaper.
@jayacheess: Significantly cheaper yes. possibly would work just as well, but people want full suspension even if they don't need it and cost wasn't a major concern for a lot of these people. However, we didn't have a full suspension like this so we mostly sold people a similar hardtail and by far the most common upgrade was a suspension seatpost. We sold a large number of thudbusters.
@ocnlogan: I have mixed feelings. Is a person who doesn't have the fitness to pedal a mile on flat ground, and who doesn't have the bone health to lift a leg over a bike, really *safe* to be riding a bike at all?
Being old doesn't disqualify you at all, it's just the fitness of the thing that is concerning.
I actually had a bit in my comment written about that topic, but the deleted it. I totally agree.
The other thing is that while the phrase might be "its like riding a bike", to describe "things that are hard to actually forget/easy to relearn". But, in my experience, many of these older people getting ebikes haven't ridden a bike in say... 20-40 years. So getting on one that where the bike is now 50-70lbs (way heavier), and the rider is ~30 yrs older (likely weaker), and the speeds are higher, has caused some problems.
I know a nice woman in her late 60's who just shattered her kneecap on her first ride on an ebike, due to the above issues.
So yeah, I love that they let people get out. But stay safe people .
Found a lot of funny names at the electric booths. Favorites: Egret and Noko. Biggest dissapointment at the Eurobike was my visit at the Reynolds booth, where they apparently didn't want to talk tubing and only showed their new Ebike system. :-( Thank god for the Sturdy, Huhn's and a stainless silver brazed Moulton!
@norona: so the future means motorcycles and not bicycles to you huh? Sad really. Sucks to be a kid where motors are the option being presented everywhere.
We all fell in love with biking by learning to pedal. Some of us might have also learned the joys of riding motorcycles. But don't confuse the joy of one with the other.
Actually, that‘s were I can kind of tolerate the batteries. This does not pretend it is a bicycle. By far less stupid than putting pedals on a motor powered vehicle.
@edspratt Any chance you can tell me what booth the photo with the caption "I don't know what this does but it's definitely unique" was in at Eurobike? Or perhaps some of the surrounding booths, so I can try to work it out? It looks like an electric CVT gear drivetrain, and I'm interested in investigating further...
I think it's just a simple way to have a belt-drive bike without the need for breakable chainstays. The inner pulley goes to the back wheel and the outer pulley goes to the cranks.
I'd been trying hard to find my mom an affordable bike like the e-country. 2 years ago I gave up and ended up buying a hardtail stepthrough. I fit a plus rear tire to add some cush, but this looks like a much better proposition. She lives in a country house up on a hill. Few bikes really cut it for her.
For all the good we like to think we are doing for the environment, I cant help but think these shows alone are nothing but waste generators fueled by me-tooism and the relentless copy cat design/manufacturing from these no-name pop ups
Exactly my thoughts. Seems the editors can't tell the difference anymore. 'Bike or motorcycle? Nah, electric scooter, that's what we'll call it. No one will even realize it's a different sport!'
@BarryWalstead: That distinction is very, very important for the industry. You can‘t pretend anymore that it‘s „just“ mountain biking if the electric motorcycles showing up at the trailhead don‘t have cranks and pedals anymore.
The paint job on that Missile is pretty sweet, is that avaliable on a normal bike? No hate towards E-bikes, just not for me. The paint job is pretty cool though.
I surprised you didn't just show 8000 pictures of e-SUV bikes. Holy crap there was a lot of serious looking full suss e-bikes with pannier racks and sometimes even baskets.
The drop bar equipped green E-bike is for adventure riders / off-road bikepacking. The 180kg tag hanging on one e-bike is its load rating, not its curb weight.

And agreed, good for them.

batteries for kids bikes is already a very uncool idea....
Sad really.

The robot machine bikes will not be known as “normal”. It’s still a moped - harden up buttercups.
A good time is what, you ever ridden monstercross on singletrack? Most fun you'll have on your local trails
