Finals Photo Epic: Loudenvielle DH World Cup 2023

The first time in Loudenveille brought plenty of incredible racing action as the Elite riders delivered some of the best riding we have seen all year. It's a shame we couldn't see the Junior riders take on the course, hopefully, the weather will play fair this week and they will get to go head-to-head in Les Gets.

Vali Höll completed a perfect weekend in France as she went fastest in qualifying, semi-finals and finals. Conditions remained loose and greasy for finals with light rain threatening through the race. Vali Höll did lose a second in the 2nd split but she gained time from then on to secure the win by 2.84 seconds. Nina Hoffmann couldn't match the speed of the World Champ as she ended the day with 2nd place. Marine Cabirou completed the top three as she went five seconds off the pace on home soil.

Loic Bruni secured his first win in 2023 as he sought redemption after his disappointment in Andorra. As the track continued to dry through the men's racing it was Loic Bruni who bested the conditions that took out many of the top riders. Dakotah Norton secured his best World Cup result as he stormed into 2nd place, only 0.777 back. Laurie Greenland wrapped the top three riders and was the only other rider within a second of Loic Bruni.

Riders and teams now head straight to Les Gets for another weekend of World Cup racing in France. Course builder Romain Paulhan deserves plenty of praise for not only building a course that was loved by riders but also putting in the extra work to ensure that after the wet weather, the Elites would be able to complete their race on Sunday. Romain did all of this fresh off a 13th place in the EDR racing.

I really enjoyed having Gwinn inbthe commenting booth. The guy sees EVERYTHING
  • 13 0
He was really chill, and seemed to enjoy sharing his knowledge and experiences!

Gwinn was awesome in the booth, and of course I miss Warner. But, and this is 100% NOT directed at you, with all the whinging negative comments about commentary and minor flubs, you’d think this was the World Cup of Commentary.
  • 13 0
Dude me too, I was really surprised bc I don’t particularly find his interviews/youtube stuff very appealing. However he absolutely crushed it in the booth, compose, intelligent comments, great eye for details, and funny. I really hope he stays in the booth eventually.

Dude. i wanted to wirte this. best commentary ever, he is eagle eyed (well...) and has the insight only a champion of the discipline can have.

Benoit must have the bluest balls in WC history. He's been teetering on the cusp for so long. When he wins it'll be a tsunami

@Nico16b: It was amazing to see it

Glad to see Thibaut Daprela back up and riding after that crash, but what's in his (broken) left grip?

He snapped his Enve bars right where the front brake lever connects but the broken bit was still flapping along (and you can see it in Andy, Nathan, and Ross' photos - cheers guys). It's not gears and he's on Fox suspension. Live Value?
  • 15 1
Wonder if it snapped on his run? It was strange how he lost control so abruptly. Also, wonder if Gwin is digging Dak's Jesus look.
  • 2 0
@neimbc: It actually might have. I remember the commentators saying that his hand slipped of the bar after a huge landing, and remember seeing it, and it could be that the bar snapped just at that moment causing him to crash.
  • 22 0
No, it was his right hand that slipped off causing the crash. I watched that crash almost a dozen times.... the compression hole he hit at full tilt shook his hand off and he lost all balance and shot forward immediately. Handlebar was intact at that point but it got launched straight into the brush. It was probably damaged there.
  • 4 1
@neimbc: What ever it's fair to say Dak probably wouldn't be up there so consistently without Gwin huge influence at all levels...
  • 2 0
@Breeconay: You're probably right. The crash was ugly, and seeing a CF bar snapped like that is scary.
  • 1 0
@Archimonde: For sure. If you watched the broadcast the fans/marshalls on the side of the track looked like they were using their entire body to pull that thing out of the trees and brush. Could have been that too.

Amazing race and track, crazy run of Loïc, and crazy ride of BK, only 4 seconds off the win with a crash. First victory might be close!

These photos are excellent and really bring it home about how exciting the DH World Cup really is... It is the one post on PB where we (hopefully) shouldn't have to read a bunch of negative crap in the comments about how lame the commentary, UCI, race coverage, weather etc... are and just relive the brilliance of these racers in all of their glory.

Thank you Nathan Hughes, Ross Bell & Andy Vathis. Very Well Done!
  • 4 0
Amen to that. I get that the coverage kinda sucks, but it bums me out that 90% of the comments on any World Cup-related article is whinging about the commentary, rather than discussing and celebrating the competition between these incredible athletes

These are awesome, so many bangers! This really tells the story of the race, love it. Love it.
