Finals Photo Epic: Mont-Sainte-Anne DH World Cup 2023

Mont-Sainte-Anne closed out the season in incredible fashion as every race produced some of the best racing we have seen all year. The elite men's racing was a particular highlight with the final riders going faster and faster until Jackson Goldstone blew the field apart.

Valentina Roa Sanchez led from split two as she pulled ahead of Sacha Earnest by 3.277 seconds. With the win, Valentina took the overall title by 30 points as her closest rival Lisa Bouladou ended the day in third.

Nathan Pontvianne led a French top three as he crossed the line 3.711 seconds ahead of Mylann Falquet and moved into second in the 2023 overall standings. Kimi Viardot wrapped up the top three, 4.965 off the winning time.

After dominating the Elite Women's field Vali Höll secured another perfect weekend knocking Nina Hoffmann off the hot seat by 13 seconds. Nina Hoffmann had a tough final run with a crash and tire blowout just before the finish, she managed to hold on to the line to take 2nd in the race and the overall. Veronika Widmann ended the week in third place. A big crash from Marine Cabirou pushed her down to 9th.

Jackson Goldstone delivered a historic run as he backed up a wild semi-finals win with another massive win finding a gap of 4.3 seconds to Ethan Craik. Jackson became the only elite male rider to win more than once this year. Loic Bruni finished the day in third and secured the 2023 overall title.

With the 2023 season wrapped up in incredible fashion, we start the countdown to the 2024 World Cup series.

Massive respect to all the racers this year. They delivered a full season of incredible racing despite the suits trying to butcher it. Yesterday was what DH dreams are made of. Scrap the semi's, sack the commentators, and big up the privateers.

I paid for and watched every moment. I'll be buying it again next year. Totally worth it. Mid season I started watching the live events instead of the replays and it became way better of an experience. I like the two run format but I think it should just be the fastest of two runs like it was when I raced 20yrs ago. Having to qualify for the finals after already qualifying for semi's is dumb. It should be the fastest rider, not just the most consistent over the two days.
  • 5 0
Fastest of two runs is an interesting idea. It’d be a different dynamic for sure. But I’d be curious to see that.
  • 2 0
100% agree. Live you see the full runs and feel the tension much more. What a race to end the season. Gutted for Finn - he was on fire until that wipe out. I'm sure he's thankful he had the back protection shown in the photo

Congrats to Gaetan Vige! I’d always wondered what’d become of him since his successful junior years.

Yes, very impressed by him. He just has to learn how to open the bottle of champagne at the right time Smile

Watching Goldstone and his effortless looking style - reminds me of Muhamed Alis Motto - float like a Butterfly and sting like a Bee.

in the beginning of the season i was not really on his side, i was like hyped arrogant kid without really knowing who he is and his Personality.
But just the pure Joy he has when hes riding and his effortless style makes it insane too watch.
He brings so much Fun and Joy hart to be not impressed and hop on the bandwagon Smile

Thanks to pink bike ! For your coverage

The only reason I know what’s going on in DH this year .

Awesome event to end the season...but let's hope WBD learn how to film these events properly. Poor camera placement and operation in a few places. Terrible zoomed in view of riders entering the rocky zone of doom not showing the bike wheels and overly zoomed out at the huck drop off. Weird amateur errors.

What could have been for Jackson if he didn't flat last round. Next year's favourite for the big trophy!!! Great Year for DH wish we had better coverage. Thanks for the show to all riders.

Yip, an Bruni knows he coming for him.

Also strange they didn't do their normal tradition of awarding the full rounds points (400 points) for the finals win. Haven't done the calculation, but seems like it would have made a difference with an 86 point deficit between Loic and Jackson. Also, what could have been for Finn. Gutted for the young guy...
  • 1 0
@Breeconay: wouldn’t have made a difference. Loic got 30 points more than Jackson in the qualies and jackson got 30
Points more than Loic in the semis.
  • 1 0
@bgoldstone: But semis are worth 100 (or 150? can't remember)... points in normal weeks. And like other years they'd just award the entire sum to the finals winner.
  • 1 0
@Breeconay: last year they didn't award qualifying points in the final round. if they did this year qualies are worth 50 points and semis are worth 100. Loic scored 120 points for 1st in Q and 3rd in the semi. Jackson scored 120 for winning semi and 6th in the qualies.
  • 1 0
@bgoldstone: I could be wrong. This isn't my hill to die on lol. Either way, good battle for the overall!

Sucks if you really can’t afford it but I’m on disco+ for £6.99 a month and apart from missing Warner I’m really happy with it. Lotta other sports included, skate, bmx etc and stoked to be able to watch British Superbikes live. It’s the only tv I pay for, I get it would be annoying if you already have pricey subs somewhere else.

It will be interesting to see if Jackson still grows in height how this will affect his body position on the bike and skills/performance cause it´s clear his relation of height vs bike size gives him a great advantage/performance allowing him to be more stand up on the center of the bike getting less tired, being more dificult to go OTB and having a more stand up body which allows him to pull gaps everywhere specially on the steeps and absorbing compressions better than anyone else... also proves Dak is on point bringing his bars so high but maybe on taller riders there is the toll of losing aerodinamics wich is not for smaller rider...
  • 6 0
Watching his riding style I think his light weight is a huge advantage for cornet speed and ability to quickly change directions/line mid rock garden. I hope he’s able to maintain his speed once/if he fills out
  • 5 1
I don’t think it has that much to do with his body type. I think that’s just what it looks like when you see someone who is just flat out better than everyone else at something. It’s like watching Michael Jordan play basketball, its so obvious you can visually tell the difference that “ok this guy is just naturally better than everyone else on the planet at this”
  • 2 1
@loudv8noises: his body in relation to size of the bike/parts, he fits "inside the bike" between the wheels and handlebar like no one else... of course he is friking talented... he was born on wheels... but also he has this luck now that might have seen as a disadvante apriori to maybe not fully developed yet... but then turns out he is inspiring to try out further settings an cockpits to other top riders cause he really proved his posiition on the bike can really rise the bar...
  • 5 0
He's young compared to the rest of the field, but he's still 19. Most men don't really grow in height much after that, so he's probably about as tall as he's gonna be.
  • 1 0
@loudv8noises: I think you hit the nail on the head. Great analogy IMO. Most of the top guys are above the 90th percentile in all the meaningful attributes required to compete at the highest level, in in the 99th percentile in one or two attributes. Jackson seems to be in the 99th percentile of all of them.

Lenzerheide at the opening round. Going to be a ridiculously strong field now that Jackson and Jordan have their rookie season figuring things out and nerves settled. Now with Ryan Pinkerton added to the mix too it’s going to be epic next year. Hopefully with Beniot Coulanges, Thibaut Dapréla, Amaury Pierron and Aaron Gwin are all back to full strength!
