First Look: The 2023 Orbea Wild Is A Race-Ready eMTB

Orbea have updated the Wild, their race-winning eMTB. The new version seems to be more performance-focused than ever. By getting rid of the door that allowed the battery to be easily removed or swapped out, Orbea say they've increased the stiffness of the front triangle by 52% while dropping around 900 g from the frame weight. Obviously, this will make it harder to swap the batteries or charge them off the bike, but you have a mechanic for that, right?

The geometry has been tweaked too - it's longer, slacker, and higher.

The Bosch motor has been updated, with a minimal remote on the bar and a controller on the top tube. You can get it with a 625 or 750 Wh battery and Bosch's regular CX motor or the new Race version for even less weight and added overrun.
Orbea Wild 23 Details

Motor & Battery

The Bosch motor seems to be the only option if you want a race-ready ebike. The latest Performance CX motor offers class-leading power and a good range with the 750 Wh battery. If you order from Orbea you can choose the 625 Wh or 750 Wh battery depending on cost, weight and range requirements. The smaller battery sits lower in the frame, giving the lowest possible centre of gravity.

The battery charge indicator and mode selector are on the top tube, with a small remote on the handlebar for quick mode changes.

Only the top-spec model comes with the Race version of the Bosch motor, which is 150 g lighter and has an extended overrun feature, meaning the motor keeps working a little longer after you stop pedalling. The idea is to help you get up and over trail obstacles where you have to pause pedalling. Hopefully, the unsolicited power won't send you off the side of an Alpine switchback.

Wow, no cable ports! What an uncontroversially neat idea, right guys? Guys?

Frame Details

The main update for the new bike is the intact downtube and the elimination of the door in the tube which allowed access to the battery. This does mean removing the battery involves first removing the motor with Allen keys, but the advantage of this approach is that Orbea were able to increase frame stiffness while saving around 900 g compared to the older bike. In fact, the bare carbon frame (with no shock, motor, battery or wiring) is said to weigh just 2,675 g - only 70 g more than the equivalent Rallon enduro bike. This helps Orbea achieve a claimed full-bike weight of under 21 kg (46.3 lb), which is very impressive for a full-power e-bike.

There is an alloy version too, but there's no word on how much that weighs.

photo
The frame-stiffening strut is carried over from the 2020 bike.

Like so many modern bikes, the cables run through the headset. Orbea say this is to "reduce visual distractions, noise and cable movement while ensuring the cable entry and exit points are fully sealed."

As for the concern of extra maintenance, Orbea claim that "thanks to the design of this system it is as easy as ever to change a cable, stem or handlebar. The only time extra work would be required would be to change the headset bearings, and to make sure that doesn’t happen very often the upper bearing is made from stainless steel to give the longest lifetime."

The headset, along with the stem, also acts as a steering limiter to stop the fork or controls from hitting the frame in a crash (much like Trek's Knock Block). A bumper on the downtube acts as a failsafe or an alternative if you choose to run a different stem.

photo

Suspension-wise, the kinematics are similar to the old bike, except the leverage curve is slightly less progressive. Orbea say there's still plenty of ramp to complement a coil shock, though all models come with air.

photo

Geometry

The geometry has been tweaked for more speed and stability. The 448 mm chainstay is 7 mm shorter, there's 25 mm more reach (size M), the head angle is 1.5° slacker, and the seat tube is 1.5° steeper. This adds up to a 44 mm longer wheelbase. The bottom bracket is 5 mm higher for extra pedal clearance and the head tube is 20 mm longer for a taller front end, which, along with the shorter back end, should make it easier to loft the front wheel. The longer, slacker and taller front end should make it feel much more stable at speed.

Models and specifications

photo

There are four models in carbon and three in aluminum . Specifications are customisable on Orbea's website using their MyO ("My Orbea") program. Top models get Orbea's new in-house Oquo wheels.

Orbea say the new Wild will arrive at the beginning of 2023, but it's already possible to reserve a bike through Orbea's Rider Connect service.

So I can get a frame with a drivetrain, suspension, cockpit, wheels AND a motor for a few hundred more than a Yeti frame?
  • 71 5
It's so much easier to hike with yeti frame on your back than complete ebike
  • 14 0
My aftermarket idea is an E-bike conversion kit. A bolt in bottom bracket. You can remove the motor and battery and bolt in a standard BB in place of the motor. No idea is too dumb...
  • 14 5
Yeti's are so stupid. 5k for a frame with like okay geo? lol
  • 2 3
and the yet i has the crappy shimano motor too
  • 10 1
@andrewfrauenglass: This would legit sell once there are tons of used eMTB's with dead batteries. Think of the massive in-bike storage without the battery there!

There's a young man with not much $ in town who rides a Giant eMTB without the battery and a dead motor because he got it for a song, shreds all over.

Ah finally back to some good old ebike articles. Too much down country in November.
  • 14 13
what is a "race ready" ebike is it racing or is it then motorsport
  • 43 0
E-bike... check. Headset cable routing.... check. All you need now is an autoplay video and you have the perfect Pinkbike trifecta of hate.
  • 13 8
No kidding. Who rides acoustic bikes anyway.
  • 2 0
@bigtim: I'll have to live with hitting on the Exacta here.
  • 6 1
@sunringlerider: No kidding, I ride mountain bike and play acoustic guitar
  • 10 0
@sunringlerider: acoustic? Analogue surely? If anything. Acoustic is, by definition, only related to sound.
  • 2 0
@rbeach: i asked the very same thing and on doing a spot of working back its actually analogue to digital conversion or was it a DAC cat remember but any comparison to a guitar was wank
  • 8 0
 @rbeach: amish bike
  • 2 4
 @Compositepro: din lilla tönt

@Endurip: you could say that if we were good friends as it stands you can probably suck something ;-) is there a swedish word for bellend
  • 3 0
I say pedal bike. If I had a handlebar mustache and drank PBR, I'd probably say "acoustic bike."
  • 2 0
 E bikes make a lot of racket.@rbeach:

@bigtim: But at least ebikes don't have push fit bottom brackets Smile
  • 35 3
FFS more headset cable routing??? If people were actually racing this wouldn't you want something a little easier to deal with for cable routing if you had to replace quickly? 'I'll take stupid mountain bike trends for $200, Alex'.
  • 7 2
Thank yourself that it’s the other side of the stem. My Mrs just bought a Focus Sam2 and if you want a shorter stem….. you are in for a few hours in the garden with some swearing.
  • 20 0
I think they missed an opportunity to integrate the front brake cable in the fork. This way you can bleed your brakes and service your fork at the same time.

cures all focus sam woes

seriously however i own one and put a 40mm nuke proof on it with no problems using the side ports in the down tube and a blanking plate from JE james took 1hr tops
  • 7 0
*I’ll* show Orbea: I refuse to buy this bike. (100% because I can’t afford it but let’s just say it’s because of that stupid cable routing.)
  • 1 0
@Compositepro: what was it like pulling the Purion cable out of the motor? Just drop it down a touch enough to remove the plug and then just pull it back?what was the blanking plug?
  • 32 0
any bike is race ready, technically...
  • 13 0
Right-as to imply it's lubed; tightened to spec; tires gna hold air...
Suggesting the top tier model is what's needed to be competitive in a race at any level is a bit stuck up.
  • 5 0
@jrocksdh: marketing is stuck up by nature
  • 3 2
But, can I race against people on acoustic bikes with this?
  • 8 0
I would strongly argue that the entry level (€5k+) models with whatever a RockShox 35 Silver is, are not ready for any racing.
  • 5 1
 @nickfranko: *analogue. Acoustic = sound
  • 9 0
@Mugen: any bike is a race bike if you race it.
  • 23 0
Once again well done on price and spec Orbea. Only slight issue is the Rock Shox 35 Silver spec on the lower models....That's a horrible fork....Guess you could just factor a new fork into the purchase price and it's still a relative deal!
  • 6 0
Agreed. The RS 35 Silver has no place on any bike over 4K.
  • 9 0
@covekid: yeah, what happened to the yari? Or at least a domain!
  • 1 0
 @KalkhoffKiller: that’s a great question,
I cant think of a single bike that comes with a Domain on it
  • 2 0
@onawalk: I think product managers and their companies are handling the specs kinda poorly. On almost every entery level ebike now there is this shitty R35 that you can bascially throw away if you do more than fireroad or easy trail cruising. I'd rather have manitou, yari or domain. The R35 must be super cheap to produce or something.
  • 1 0
 @Woodro: cool,
I guess I’m not usually looking at e-bikes, so I might have missed that one.
  • 1 0
 @KalkhoffKiller: you might be right,
I’ve never ridden one, so I don’t really have any opinion on it
  • 1 0
They spent more time trying to get the headset cable routing to work than to spec a decent fork. The money they could've saved instead of R&Ding hare-brained mtb marketing trends they could've put into better components.
  • 2 0
@KalkhoffKiller: agreed. Add DVO D3 (their entry level) forks to that list. Great basic performance fork for a decent price.
  • 1 0
@KalkhoffKiller: RS 35 is trash. BUT a majority of ebike riders are trail cruising.
  • 2 0
@dontcoast: Yeah, but the 35 isn't upgradeable where there are tons of tuning options for the Yari and Domain. Even foxs rythm forks can be upgraded with a better damper if the need arises. The 35 is ok for fireroad cruising and maybe riding easy, flat trails but everything else will just suck.
  • 1 0
 @KalkhoffKiller: 100% agree.

And, almost no-one "needs" to upgrade a rythm damper

I wonder what the OEM cost difference between 35 silver and Marz Bomber 2 is...both will develop bushing play under hard riding, but the Marz will feel pretty good until it doesn't, while the 35 silver will feel mediocre even with a re-build out of the box.
  • 25 3
LolsAF… 52% stronger front triangle. Was the prior version made from cardboard?!
  • 11 1
Almost like there was a gaping hole in the triangle or something.
  • 23 2
They forgot to route the front brake hose through the headset.. fail..
  • 28 1
 ...and the chain.
  • 1 0
I really like it when there are no cables. So clean.
  • 18 0
Looks ace. Oh wait a minute, headset routing F**K that.
  • 11 0
Can we get a "headset cable routing" filter so we can just ignore any new bike that comes with that idiotic "feature"?
  • 11 1
Can't remove the battery from the frame=check
Cables through headset=check
Fox X2 air shock=check

Guess this is another disposable ebike...
  • 1 0
 the first one's insane!

removable / swappable battery is really the only thing my next eeb must have (if I'm buying it with my own money)
  • 1 1
@owl-X: Yeah...you can't upgrade, buy a second battery and if you have a problem you have to send the whole frame back!
  • 2 0
You can remove the battery if you remove the motor first, they install the battery after molding the frame, not during....takes a little bit longer but not more than a few minutes
  • 9 0
Shout-out to all of the eMTB manufactures, stop putting RS 35 forks on base level eMTBs! Charge an extra $150 and put a RS Domain RC on the base model.
  • 3 0
100% This. RS35 is barely acceptable for my kids on an entry level normal bike.

I sell these and for anyone who ins't fireroad grampa, the fork is just a joke.

The good news is, mostly fireroad grampa buying the bikes with the 35's...
  • 2 0
@dontcoast: I reckon most of these bikes are bought by people who don't need a mountain bike per say, but like the looks of it.. hence, it makes no difference
  • 1 0
@dontcoast: I am 61/GrampaSmile eMTBer, but most of the stuff I do is steep techy stuff and the 35 can't handle it.
Not all of us Grampa's like to just do fire-roadsSmile
The 35 is OK for any entry level MTB, but an eMTB with the extra weight is just a No-Go.
The price different between a RS 35 ($450) and RS Domain ($580) not much.
  • 1 0
@saladdodger: they definitely benefit from full suspension for comfort, safety and bumpy dirt roads. yeah they'd be better off on a full suspension trekking bike but most base model eMTBs are more afforable.
  • 1 0
@mr-epic-3: 100% agree and the 35 forks annoy me to no end as a salesperson.

That being said, if you came to me and told me your ride steep and techy, I'd just reccomend one of the models with a Fox38 for that very reason.

But you're right those bikes "should" have domains or yaris
  • 7 0
fuck I don't know why I keep checking these release articles just to see more headset housing routing. From both a consumer and shop stand point it just adds so many complicating variables that manufacturers don't care about due to A E S T H E T I C S
  • 2 0
.. it doesn't even look good.... if that was the aim?
  • 8 0
I was so happy there was a new enduro bike then my heart dropped when i saw the internal cable routing why do company’s keep disappointing us like this
  • 10 1
Nice looking bike, but I would take the extra 1kg and a replaceable battery every day of the week.
  • 3 0
Definitely, bikes banned from flying with batteries.
  • 6 0
Seems like lots of companies are putting Rockshox 35s on their entry level bikes. This sucks because they can't be upgraded. I wish they would put a Yari or Domain on there. I thought maybe Orbea would be better than this. Guess not. I'm out.
  • 10 1
Will Tarmo use it or this bike is not full package ready ?
  • 15 7
Neat, but why would you need a race emtb? It's an emtb.
  • 8 4
 For E-Enduro races I guess?
  • 6 9
@OskarStaudte: sorry but I fail to see the point. Never tried so I don't know the rules etc though.

I get it, lots of folks on ebikes, and racing is fun, so there's a market for that. But I'm not sure the results have any meaning... so is it really a race?
  • 5 1
@Uuno: these "races" are mostly a daylong advertisement
  • 1 0
 @OskarStaudte: mainly downcountry
  • 4 0
@Uuno: Why wouldn't it be a race? If everyone is on an eMTB it's a race. No one is suggesting that these be allowed to race in a non eMTB enduro.
  • 2 0
@Uuno: I can see why you would think that, and I was very skeptical at first too. My example is the E-EWS. They ride up the hills on some so called power stages, where they need to master a very technical climb with their ebike, and they are also timed on this stage. The motor is one part, but also the riders technical ability. Furthermore, they are also timed on the downhills, similar to the "normal" enduro races.
Its an interesting concept, but I can see why someone wouldnt see the point.
But lets also not forget that mountain bike races are just a big advertisment party, so e-enduro races are mostly to advertise ebikes, as normal EWS is to advertise "analog" (lol) mountainbike brands
  • 8 1
What Race is it ready for?
  • 2 0
 Race to your wallet!
  • 3 0
It's crazy y'all didn't post a pic of the aforementioned 'minimal remote', I was intrigued and went hunting for it on Orbeas bloated website, and it's actually super cool! After the absolute garbage looking monstrosity attached to the Ibis Oso' Bosch system, a wireless sleek remote is a complete godsend. I can't believe Bosch is shopping both of these... I would never think of buying any bike with the garbage hanging off the Oso's bars.
  • 2 0
My thoughts exactly. I've been waiting for ebikes to clean up their controls for ages. Bosch have been the worst to date but this system is exactly what I've been shouting for. I don't need a display and don't want wires. I maybe don't even need the thumb switch. On/Off on the top tube which is also a mode change button and battery level indicator would be all i need and clean up the bike massively.
  • 2 1
Looks like they have finally caught up with what specialized have been doing for years with their frame on/off and battery indicator and a small handlebar mode switch and thats very good news indeed.
I would never buy an ebike with the massive handlebar displays like the current Bosch.
  • 3 1
I don't really have a problem with ebikes , don't own one but have hired one and enjoyed it and in the future I reckon one of the half fat ones could keep me enjoying riding . But .....that overreach feature, surely that tips over into not really a bike , especially for racing .
  • 3 1
A very good looking bike. But I liked the fluid aesthetic of the previous one. As someone already said... There are only two types of cyclists. Those who go in emtb and those who will go. The second ones hate the first ones.
  • 8 6
How do we get the industry to get their heads out of their a**es? Race eMTBs. Where are these "racers" going to practice other than our local trails? The industry needs to seriously get involved in trail advocacy and maintenance efforts. What we have is already so torn up and unmaintained it's sad to see and the eBikes are multiplying like mushrooms after rainfall.
  • 4 0
Humans have been racing everything with an engine/motor since they existed, but oh no you cant race an e bike! thats cheating and for lazy people!
  • 1 0
Exactly, and if I can’t win the top headset bearing swap out race I might as well just quit riding.
  • 4 1
Overrun Feature sounds like it has passed the line to motorcycle, with the motor powering the bike without pedalling, and not
just assisting the riders pedal input. No?
Doesn't that bring legal consequences?
  • 2 1
Integrated cable routing looks the WORST when only the front wheel cable is outside. It is the most horrible of all. If I had the money to buy it, If I wanted to buy it, I would go to an orbea shop and refused to is publicly just for the sake of it. Piece of shit routing.
  • 1 0
I am waiting for the new redesigned Orbea Rise that will be announced in December. Lighter than the current model with a slightly larger battery. Hard to beat the current Rise... cant wait to see this one!
  • 1 0
Wow, you guys that pointed out that there is no such thing as emtb racing are so smart. You should really congratulate yourself on your brilliance. It is definitely not a thing anyone has ever thought of.
  • 3 0
So you have to spend $12k to get the Bosch Cx-Race. Forget that. I was honestly all set to order one until I saw that.
  • 2 1
All this work to get the rear brake hose through the headset and they couldn't even be bothered route the front brake hose through the stanchion and slider for me? Lazy design Orbea - just lazy!
  • 3 0
Slightly less progressive? It went from ~35% to ~24% that is a pretty significant change.
  • 4 1
nice Ebke, very stealth style to it. ok maybe Orbea best in the market now taking lead w/ high output bikes.
  • 2 1
Orbea made this bike for me. Just so I could see the simultaneous head explosion of the anti-E-Pinker and the anti-headset routing Pinker. Should have put on a remote climb switch and some Spokey Dokeys.
  • 3 0
Why does the geometry chart have XL first and then Small. There was no reason to do that but they did I guess.
  • 3 0
Pinkbike: "Hey put up a post about a new eMTB, the commenters are getting bored"

Pinkbike commenters: Didn't disappoint
  • 3 1
great lines on the frame - really loving the. way this bike looks. I'm getting closer and closer to buying an e-bike the more sleek and refined they look.
  • 4 2
Immediately went to Yeti website to check top spec SB120 vs this top spec. Was not disappointed...
  • 3 0
 upside-down mounted shock, look out
  • 3 0
"Longer, slacker and higher"? Someone didn't get the memo
  • 1 0
It seem like the new question is: cluttery cables from the front or from the riders perspective. Not sure if I'd like the way it's done here.
  • 2 0
Pros:Looks better than my Norco Truax .

Cons: needs a bigger motor and battery.
  • 3 0
" class leading power". Rocky mountains still make more power do they not?
  • 2 0
Bikeradar says the bike with smaller battery is 46lbs so this article suggesting full power version is 46lbs is wrong.
  • 2 0
You lost me at SIC And integrated cable routing.

Bad dog Orbea, bad dog (bops them on the nose with a rolled up newspaper)

headset routed ebike. cool, is it also super boost? lmao

"race ready" and "e-MTB" are mutually exclusive
  • 3 1
Finally the wild doesntt look ugly af
  • 5 4
Surely I’m not the only one that finds the words ‘race-ready emtb’ a hilarious yet sad concept
  • 6 4
So is this a Motorsport now then? Would rather watch supercross
  • 3 2
Carbon cranks suck have no place in MTB. Also please paint the motor housing, chainring, and cranks to match the frame
  • 1 1
Sep paint makes it look pregnant and screams "this is an ebike"!
  • 3 2
Overrun .... so the power keeps going after you stop pedalling. I feel the same about this as I do about ebikes in general.
  • 3 4
Soon they'll skip the pedals altogether... poor poor trails...
  • 1 0
Anyone got a clue as to how much more the alloy version is?
  • 2 1
Dude electric zaskar! Triple triangle mang!!!
  • 1 1
Would buy if only boschs displays and customization wouldn't be so shitty. Also they need to get rid of the motor rattle!
  • 1 0
have you heard the motor clack on a shimano?
  • 2 1
@brookscurran: Yeah, its even worse on the EP8 but better/ most of the time not existant on the E8000. That's what it makes it so frustrating. With Bosch it kinda depends on the bike how bad it is but so far I could identify only one bike (Scott ransom eride) were it only occurs so little that its not an issue.
  • 1 0
Weight of the smaller batt.' Bike then?
  • 3 2
 E motos killing the vibes.
  • 1 1
Why does this bike look pregnant to me? As if it is going to have a little baby ebike at any moment.
