First Look: Pivot's New Shuttle LT eMTB

Pivot Cycles recently released a short-travel, lightweight eMTB, so brand loyalists could have guessed that a full-powered, long-travel version was on the way. The Shuttle LT is the latest bike in the lineup to undergo the switch to a vertical shock layout to match the rest of the revamped full suspension bikes from Pivot. Wielding 160mm of rear wheel travel and Shimano's 85 Nm EP8 motor, the Shuttle LT stands at the other end of the spectrum from the Shuttle SL, but still comes in at a respectable 22.5kg with a 756Wh battery.

Filled with classic Pivot frame specs, you can expect to find features on the Shuttle LT like 157 Super Boost rear wheel spacing, a DW-link suspension platform, and now room for a water bottle and tool storage inside the front triangle thanks to a trunnion mounted rear shock. It's interesting to note that besides the Point dirt jump model, Pivot only produces carbon-framed bikes, which means the starting price for the Shuttle LT is $9,899 USD. There is still the higher priced Team XTR build that checks out at $11,999 with high-end components from Fox, Shimano, and DT Swiss.

Frame and Motor Details

There's no arguing that the Shuttle LT has improved its aesthetics over the previous Shuttle with its beer belly downtube, but looks aren't the only reason for the change. Trunnion mount shocks are popular with frame designers for their short eye-to-eye and that decreases packaging constraints. Now, the Shuttle LT is optimized in terms of both desirable kinematics and allows room for a water bottle inside the front triangle. To fine-tune either of the air shocks that come spec'd on the builds, or a Fox DHX2, Pivot has published a comprehensive setup guide that includes settings for the stock fork.

At the top of the seatstay that elegantly flows into the top tube line, an offset pivot allows for 0.5 degrees of adjustment to the seat tube and head tube angles. The steeper of the two can be used to accommodate a 27.5" rear wheel. Even though the builds arrive with a 170mm travel fork, they are built to handle an extra 10mm, so long as it stays in the single crown variety. Another min/max is the rear rotor which is limited to specifically 203mm - a 200mm, like those from SRAM brakes will not yield enough pad contact due to the specific height of the post mount brake boss.

By now, the Shimano EP8 doesn't present any surprises. It's fairly reliable, quick to tune via the app, and easy to locate service centers, should it act up. 85Nm of torque and a 756Wh are fairly standard numbers when comparing what other brands offer on their full-powered eMTBs. That means that there are no ISCG mounts on the motor or frame, but there is a color matched, painted shroud that disguises the motor compared to other brands that simply plug and play the fitment of the EP8.

In about one minute, the battery can be removed without having to unbolt the motor and it has an integrated charging port at the bottom of the seat tube, above the BB. A full charge takes about 5 hours, but Pivot claims that wait time drops to 3.5 hours if you can make it back to the outlet with one bar of juice left.

Compared to the Shuttle SL, the full gas, LT frame is geared towards rowdier riding and therefore received a slacker 64-degree head tube angle, but oddly enough, doesn't see the same decision to size-matched chainstay lengths. Those numbers remain at 441mm across the four sizes that span in reach from 445 to 510mm in the low BB setting, basically increasing 20mm per size. Pivot does kindly increase the seat tube angle for taller riders, which shifts from 76.5 degrees on the small and medium to 77 on the large, and 77.5 on the XL.

Specs and Pricing

What goes hand in hand with carbon and e-bikes? A much lighter wallet after the purchase of a Shuttle LT. There's no hiding that the prices are up there, but you are looking at a boutique frame with an electric motor to get you up the hill faster. With that said, there are only two build kits and no aluminum frame options.

Closing in on five figures, the $9,899 SLX/XT combo also sees some influx of Deore drivetrain components, namely the chain and cassette. As for suspension, the Fox 38 gets the base GRIP damper and Float X, which do the job quite well. There are also the DT Swiss Hybrid H1900 wheels which have proved to be bomber in past reviews and attentively, the Galfer Rotors are bumped up to a large diameter 223 at the front.

The Team XTR trim level receives a similar split on the chain and cassette, which are actually of the XT variety, but this time all the stops are pulled out for Factory level Fox components, like a Transfer post, 38 GRIP2 fork, and Float X shock. One move that was possibly a choice to get those weight numbers under a certain figure could be the Maxxis EXO+ tires which are questionable in terms of durability under a fully loaded eMTB.

 @lestooge: Actually no, the angle of the shock to the frame has no relation to the progressivity, the angle of the shock to the rocker link does, so as long as you rotate the mounting point around the rocker as you rotate the shock, the kinematics will remain the same, only reason for this is to avoid that big motor without having to move all the suspension further up.

 I demo'd one and the thing rips - that shock angle, despite the first glance, worked so well with their dw link. I'd never buy an e-bike but if I were in the market I would go Pivot for sure.

 If these things are roughly double the price compared to a 2020 high end emtb (which is realistic on actual street prices) - do they actually work for a couple of years?

Durability is a big question mark in the bike biz for bikes which are ridden as „advertised“. I can’t imagine how much maintenance a gravity oriented emtb will need. Lots of vert, high weight. Some questionable parts.
But hey, at least they included a big aftermarket front rotor not only in the 12k but also the sub 10k spec. Nice move Smile

 Having worked in a shop that sold quite a lot of Trek Rails they actually have remarkably few issues. Particularly motor/battery/e-bike specific bits are very durable - Bosch stuff is really good. Frames, frame bearings and components etc all last great as well.

The only real issue is drivetrain longevity: chains and cassettes particularly. Shimano or Sram, we had customers who would stretch a chain to the point of needing a replacement in only a couple months or a few rides. I'm sure they were using it in the smallest cogs too much and not changing gear enough - powering up stuff in turbo in the 10-14t rings rather than going up the cassette. Freehub bodies and hub bearings get eaten a bit as well - but this stuff is all replaceable.

Market definitely need some e-bike specific drivetrains that have fewer gears but more durable.

 @tom666: Sram EX1 is out there since a couple years, but it doesn’t really get used anymore. Somehow the 12s marketing pushed it aside.

But for those turbo rippers the smallest three cogs from Sram and Shimano are still available aftermarket

 @juliuskliemmtb: I don't know about other countries - but in the UK we haven't been able to get those 3 smallest cogs for some time - they haven't been available. Lots of cassettes have been replaced just because the bottom 3-4 rings are mashed.

@IamZOSO : That's definitely an idea and could be good. Avoids having a fragile rear derailleur /hanger system hanging off the back of the bike too. Serviceability is a concern though - if it's all internal to the motor it's going to be hard for people to work on their own bikes or fix stuff out on the trail.

 @znarf: For many hub brands, you can get a steel freehub body.

The EX1 is great on my friends older Specialized Ebike. Its all steel, and actually not that heavy. I was tempted to get one for my regular bike until I saw the price. I'd love to have bigger jumps between gears. 12 is overkill on a regular bike, and over overkill on an ebike.

 @juliuskliemmtb: the stupidly expensive cassette is the problem with ex1. Why go for an x01 level cassette when you're not bothered about weight, should have been a gx cassette at £140 instead of £320.

Also, microshift advent. 9 speed, £35 11-46 cassettes, £150 for a full drive train. My next bike will be purchased with a view the sell the new drive train on it (the suspension and brakes I want are generally slx/xt level bikes) and throwing the advent straight on.

 @tom666: Durability……..170 travel Bosch bruiser……XO1 or XX1 chain (unstretchable), cheap heavy cassette (NX or Deore - durable and cheap to replace). Would fit my Zee or GX downhill group if that inner plate on the cassette was just a little wider!

 Shimano derailleurs are seemingly made of soft cheese no matter which bike you put them on. Least durable derailleurs I've ever ridden have been the last couple of years slx and xt

 Won’t defend the other parts, but the deore cassette is a good thing for an ebike. All steel. Ebikes already eat drivetrains, wouldn’t want any aluminum there.

"Things cost money and inflation hits hard" falls a bit flat when the dirt bike industry is still pumping out dirt bikes that are way f*cking cooler for less money. Hell, want to stick with e bikes? A Stark VARG costs less than the dang top of the line build for this.

Donno. At a certain point, hopefully people will stop paying such ridiculous prices and we see some sanity return. I'm hoping the incoming recession (are we already there?) helps speed that along.

 @William42: I always find it interesting when guys compare ebike to moto, there is nothing similar about them at all. I ride an enduro motorcycle for certain things and an ebike, I guess if u can afford you compare to other things you can afford but comparing a moto to a trials bike to an ebike is stupid, it would be like comparing touring skis to a sled. Devinci norco and a few others all make a wicked bike under 9500 Canadian for a bike you will ride every day and more kms a season than you ever have, cost per ride and cost per smile are better and so it’s cheaper than an Amish bike

 I was reading about ep8 motors haveing an errors that cannot be resolved with reprogramming flash memory etc,I would be very worried about buying such an expensive bike with a shimano motor when bosch supply spares. What's your experience of shimano motors.? Reliable considering the amount fitted to ebikes around the world?

 I had issues with my EP8 after 1500 flawless kilometers. It took 3 months for it to be fixed. Was 100% taken under warranty by Shimano. Got a new motor and new battery but 3 months without riding.

 As much as I like complaining about my stuff in order to justify updating to newer model I unfortunately cannot fault my Decoy with E8000 motor. I’ve done almost 4000km in two years, a lot of mud, rain and snow, bikepark laps full speed and the stuff is really reliable, never had an error code or anything. The only thing which has been mentioned already it’s that the beast feeds on chains. And I get much more puncture than with my mountainbike. Otherwise pretty standard mtb maintenance. I was tempted by changing to a newer ebike last winter but I’m afraid of reliability issues on new models and the pricing went too far in my opinion

 I have 30,000km on steeps 8000 and now 4000 on ep8 all trouble free, usually put 3000km on a bike then sell it and they are all still running, did 2 bike till 5000km and non issues. I live in Squamish bc and ride a lot and these are simple to look after and have last for a long time. Of course you will hear of failures, problems etc but they are the minority not the majority

 Wondering why no X2 is used? Would suit better to the Fox philosophy, even if Float X is an excellent shock in my opinion. So no dealbreaker...

Rather sure that reason is a fitting issues between link and the bigger diameter of X2 or if shock turned around between piggy back and downtube.

 Ease of service, simplicity of setup. When you can barely get people to set sag, adding more knobs is a tough one.

 Why would they put a minimum 203 post mount on the bike? When one of the big brake companies disks are 200mm? It's easy to add 1.5mm spacers onto a 200mm post mount so you can run a 203mm disk. Just seems a strange design decision to completely rule out SRAM brakes on a bike.

 I would say it has something to do with the bike being built around a shimano motor and by extension so are the 203mm break mounts. Is it necessary, nope. But I can imagine shimano 'suggesting' the 203mm mounts.

 Whilst I agree, I would counter that with the fact that at least the brake rotor isn't proprietary and you can easily source a non sram disc for an otherwise sram equipped bike. Is it so important to use a sram rotor?
(You'd also get away with a 200mm disc in an emergency where nothing else was available...)

 It isn't even a Shimano rotor, but Galfer. SRAM brakes will work just fine on a non-SRAM rotor.

 Somehow the geo chart doesnt add up. L size in low setting:
STA: 77, HTA: 64, Reach 488, shouldnt the ETT be shorter than 650? Or maybe it has been measured with a very high seat.

 Iv not bought an ebike yet bit I definitely prefer the idea of a bosch electric system thay have been in that buisness so long yamaha aswell. How reliable are the older shimano systems the steps7000/8000. I fitted a bafang 750w system to a marin mount vision 2 and it ran well even after the controller screen bricked when I was programming it, I ended up using the programming lead as a makeshift control module very nice of bafang to consider these sorts of things. No chance of getting a bricked steps motor running by hook or by crook..

 This bike is in the same price range as the specialized World Cup bike was years ago. That bike was 11 grand back in 2015 I think. Yes it’s incredibly expensive but you’re not forced to buy it

 PROS: It no longer looks like a pregnant cow. CONS: It’s ugly in a diff way now with that shock angle. IMO, they nailed it with the new SL bike, and it can take a coil. Why didn’t they increase the travel of that slightly, and keep price a little more in line with that bike, instead we have this new monstrosity for stupid money.

 You can get an 'enduro' ebike for about £5k - you can get a enduro non e-bike for around half of that, its an offer to purchase, not a requirement.

 Is this a press release or a “first look”? This reads like a press release and don’t “first look” (whatever that means) include some initial impressions of riding the bike?

No bike company consistently gets the amount of fawning press that pivot does. Even going back to the heyday of Mountain Bike Action, every Pivot is amazing and all warts are carefully massaged around. Pivots gets softer treatment than even Santa Cruz/Pon

 @rcrocha: I did, but honestly I think the performance level would have been fine for the way I put my lawnmower away. Concrete pad's great, but mainly because it keeps the bulk of the mass low, which really helps with tipping it over into corners and helps keeps it stable off jumps.

 Pivot are always laughably expensive and 22.5kg isn't as light as the Fuel EXE, the Levo SL or the EZesty, it's not really even much lighter than a full ebike, so hard pass from me as a lightweight eeb.

 You miss the point and their other Pivot Suttle SL. This is not their lightweight version

 Beautiful but these Huge battery bikes only encourage poor rider etiquette on the trails, anything over say 550 is not necessary if you want to "mountain bike"

 Yep Shimano motor has become a deal killer for me. They'll all break but with shimano in NZ so far the average time to get a new motor for my customer has been 6 months. Bosch, you'll have it sorted in 1-2 weeks max. Brose, well they die so often the supplier has the motor swap down to a fine art.
