GT Announces Recall of LaBomba Bikes Following Concerns of Frame Failure

GT La Bomba 24

GT has announced a recall of GT LaBombas sold between October 2018 and September 2023 because the frames could fail.

Around 3,040 bikes in the U.S. and about 324 bikes in Canada are believed to be affected by GT, the recall notice states the weld at the headtube/downtube can get "damaged and separate from the bicycle frame." Bicycle Retailer reports GT has so far received five reports of damage to the weld with no injuries reported.

In its recall notice, GT said: "GT dealers and riders should inspect the bicycle to determine if they have a GT Model Year 2019-23 LaBomba bicycle or bicycle frameset. A consumer can identify an impacted bicycle or bicycle frameset by the presence of “LaBomba” painted on the bicycle frame top tube. If you have a GT Model Year 2019-23 LaBomba bicycle or bicycle frameset, please refrain from riding it until a GT dealer can replace it.

"Please contact your local authorized GT dealer or GT to arrange for an authorized GT dealer to replace the bicycle frame at no charge."

You can contact GT at 800-843-2453 from 9 am to 6 pm ET, Monday through Friday. Alternatively, you can email at ridersupport@gtbicycles.com

To find out more details, you can view the CPSC recall page here or access the Canada recall page here.

Not surprising frames called "LaBomba" are exploding.
  • 79 2
Interesting. So the Cannondale "Dave" and GT "LaBomba" are literally identical frames (no surprise, same parent company) given that they're under recall for the exact same issue.

 Likely.

I like the way the bikes are more or less the same (eg running the Manitou fork), but the GT is $300 more expensive

We always knew this. It was commented on a lot at the launch of the Dave. LaBomba was a well-liked frame, so nobody thought it was a bad thing.

@korev: badge engineering, just like a Hyundai and Kia are basically the same car, same drivetrains, same tech, just delivered with some different body panels and colors.

Woah we got Sherlock Loams here...brilliant detective work

Huh, I missed that one. Looks like it didn't go on the PB home page, but for some reason this one did?

@barp: I noticed a few commenters wanted a full post on Pinkbike with comments so this recall was written as its own article instead of a link to Bicycle Retailer.

The welds should have been Lou Diamond Philliet-brazed.

Take the rest of the day off, you've earned it.

At least it's only frame failure and not headset cable routing.
  • 4 0
Agreed, at least you can replace a frame. Headset cable is just there...lurking...like taxes.
  • 21 0
 so, the front fell off?
  • 18 0
I would like to point out that that's not typical.
  • 4 0
perhaps they made the mistake of using cardboard and other paper derivatives
  • 5 0
I’m not saying it wasnt safe, it’s just perhaps not quite as safe as some of the other ones
  • 5 0
 A jump hit it?
Yes, a jump hit it.
In a bike park?

 @danob:
Extremely rare, only happens when you're just riding along...
  • 12 1
Sounds like they take it seriously. Take notes Shimano, NS bikes and others.
  • 2 0
hey, don't jinx it for my NS Define!
  • 10 2
Why didn't they do as commencal did and invest everything in marketing instead of a replacing a badly designed/manufactured frame?!
  • 8 1
This is a little concerning, since it's not a new bike and a DJ frame is pretty much the simpliest design you can get. Abundance of caution? Litigious North American consumers? A fundamentally flawed design? Drunk welders?

The Taiwan welder had a bad week maybe?
  • 11 0
 @bman33: Had a bad 5 years?
  • 7 0
@93EXCivic: 3364 frames is a week for those guys
  • 1 0
@Spunk: sometimes they just hold onto the stock, repaint the frame and call it next years
  • 7 0
Dirt Jumper bike, frame failure... YIKES

I've always wondered: with a frame recall like this, will the dealer also rebuild your bike on the new frame? Or do they just give you the new frame and you have to strip/rebuild yourself?
  • 1 0
 You gotta do it yourself
  • 2 0
With the Cannondale Dave frames we get £126 account credit to swap the recall frames
  • 5 2
@gregberry: which would cover swapping out a single brake in todays standards by LBS
  • 1 1
@jubs17: That's what I figured. So even though the recall is free, customers get to either have the massive pain in the ass of tearing down and then building up the bike themselves, or the significant expense of having a shop do it.

I guess with a DJ it doesn't matter so much as that's about the simplest possible bike to have to rebuild but jesus, what a pain if a full suspension bike with internal cable routing gets recalled...
  • 7 0
 @charliewentoutside:

It’s a dirt jump bike. Have the bike shop press in your headset cups if required. Take it home and in two hours max your swapped over with a new frame.
  • 3 0
My dealer is rebuilding our two bikes for us. My son and I each bought Daves last summer. It's a bit of an inconvenience, but I appreciate a) that the shop is taking care of it and b) that Cannondale/GT are taking it seriously and being proactive. I honestly wouldn't mind doing the rebuild myself if they'd let me keep the bad frame to put on the wall!
  • 1 0
@dungeonbeast: In this case, yeah. I was asking about frame recalls generally though. Like I said, not a big deal if it's a DJ, but it would be a bigger deal if it's a full-sus bike with internal cable routing and all that.
  • 1 0
@gregberry: Just wondering if you work in a shop? Leisure lakes have told me ive got to pay labour charges, Cannondale have said no i dont, but im wondering if my bike gets stripped how long are my parts knocking about the bike shop ? Any clue on the turnaround time ? Cheers Paul.
  • 4 1
@scoot34: Shop guy here - GT and Cannondale are covering labour costs of frame swaps, no idea on tunraround time but I heard frames are already produced and ready to ship.
  • 6 0
Don't people enjoy building bikes anymore?
  • 4 0
@scoot34: yes I do. We’ve been a Cannondale dealer for 10 years. We only sold one Dave but already had it in and stripped down. New frame is due in April. Recalled frame has already been destroyed and credit applied to our labour. Very straight forward process.

When Rocky recalled all their alloy front triangles in 2020, the rocky dealers stripped and rebuilt my bike free of charge.
  • 2 0
@gregberry: took me more time to drive back to the shop than it took me to strip my frame. Given I have shop experience so I may be one of the few.
  • 2 0
I’m curious what happens if you’re a second owner.
  • 2 0
My son is in the process of receiving not his 2nd but his 3rd LaBomba frame. First one cracked exactly as described above, we rebuilt the new one and 8 months later as he was relaxing after a run at Kanuga, happened to spy a crack in the warrantied frame in the exact same spot.
Pain the ass? You bet.
The upside is that the folks at GT took the matter very seriously and have maintained exceptional communication throughout the process. It also gave us the opportunity to purchase a REEB DJ which has proven to be a far better option. I cannot stress enough the importance of giving your DJ a solid cleaning and inspect those welds!

GT is in the process of replacing my 2018 GT La Bomba frame for what sounds like a similar issue. I’m not concerned for myself since they are already replacing it, but not sure why they would not include the 2018 models for others safety if they have the same issue?
  • 1 0
Just had a recall email from Nukeproof on the 2022 Solum. Mine is a 23 but find it hard to believe they are different. Really sucks as NP/CRC are on the brink of going pop so no warranty.....

Same frames as the GTs and Cannondale or at least the same factory?
  • 1 0
Love my Labomba pro and the blue/black/yellow color scheme is the bomb! Going to miss it and wondering what color the new frame will be. Hopefully nothing boring. Dropped off my bike a week and a half ago and they keep saying any day they're just waiting for GT to send the frame... Seems like empty promises but hopefully soon.
  • 4 0
@edspratt what about the UK ones??
  • 2 0
Have any of the shop people on here seen the color of the replacement… sure the frame is free, but if i have to buy a bunch of new colored parts this could get expensive!
  • 1 0
I saw a picture that someone posted on the dirt jumping subreddit. It looks like it's a black sparkle frame with either white or silver Cannondale lettering. IMO it looks good
Edit: never mind. I forgot the article was about the laBomba, the frame I saw was for the Dave lol

Meanwhile my Specialized P2 from 2003 is still ticking. Anyone that ever rode broke something but that frame is still together. Bent as hell but together.

Steel is real when it comes to bikes that are going to be slammed a lot.

but my 3 x meta's having the same problem + all the other failures ive seen in person dont warrant a recall?
  • 2 1
I always wondered how many folks are buying DJs, now I know. More that I’d have guessed, but still not that many.

 RIP used labomba owners
  • 4 0
A full scale recall affects used as well as new owners, since it’s a safety issue.
  • 3 0
Nah... those people are stoked. They paid less for the bikes and now they get free new frames. Recalls are recalls. Doesn't matter if you're the first owner or some crack head that stole it from the 4th owner.
