Welcome to the Pinkbike Racing Podcast, our new downhill-focused podcast.

This year, with the launch of our World Cup Racing Team, we'll be attending all the races we can and we aim to give you a reactive, fast-footed insight into life between the tape, as well as in the pits. The podcast will be featuring me, Henry Quinney, and Mr. Ben Cathro. Ben's not only managing the team but also racing as part of it. As Ben's mechanic, I'll be along for the journey.

THE PINKBIKE PODCAST // EPISODE 111 - WELCOME TO THE PINKBIKE WORLD CUP RACING PODCAST
March 23rd, 2022

It's all downhill from here!

Over the course of the season, we'll be recording this podcast the day after the race and aim to have it up shortly after. We aim to do it on the road, in Ben's van and give an honest and genuine appraisal of the race. We'll also pull in characters from the circuit to hear their thoughts and feelings on the weekend just past. Yes, it will be relevant to Pinkbike Racing but we also aim to just go where the story takes us, and feature some important and pivotal people that you may be less familiar with.

I'm able to attend all these international races because I'll be Ben's mechanic this season. This means that I will have access to all the events, as well as the new tech on hand. We're able to make this possible while also protecting my editorial freedom by me not taking a wage from the team budget. Instead, I'm still part of the Pinkbike tech team, and my expenses to do this are funded by the Pinkbike/Beta/Outside membership model. This also has the added benefit in that we can direct more of the budget to the riders, their wages, and eking out as much performance as possible. If you like this approach and want to hear unfettered opinions from a tech editor on tour, please consider becoming a Beta subscriber.

We're going to do the first few episodes on our normal Pinkbike Podcast channel as a bit of a preview, but we'll eventually be moving The Pinkbike Racing Podcast over onto its own channel. And full disclosure, at some point we'll reserve the full-length episodes of the Pinkbike Racing Podcast for members. This will help balance the books and lessen the burden of the tech team paying an editor that somehow does even less work than Levy.

Would be fine if there was an option to pay just for the podcast. Paying for beta, let alone all the other irrelevant outside crap just to listen to this? Lol nope. No matter how good it is.

BTW I've actually read a fair bit of beta content using chrome's reader mode to see if it was the editorial gold worth paying for that it was advertised as... It's a hard no. Most of it is useless, unoriginal and not free from advertorials despite being paid.

Shame PB is becoming a repost dump while actual content is beta-only. Because on the rare occasions that original articles do appear here, I think they are miles better than beta.
  • 8 1
That could be a good middleground. Get a subscription or pay per article. I think it is fine. It is a free market. Pinkbike gets to name their price, everyone gets to choose whether to take it (and pay) or leave it (and don't pay). I pay for enough paper magazines and books (Cranked and the Misspent Summers stuff) and also paid for Eskapee when they had their Eskapee Collective (which eventually still turned out to be insufficient to keep the site going). I personally don't quite get what BETA could add to what I'm already getting from Cranked and Misspent Summers, so unless they bother to make that clear I'll let this one pass. But of course there will be others who do like this stuff enough to pay for it. All good. And it doesn't really hurt that Pinkbike is making mention of their content, does it? If you set your profile settings properly, you won't see any articles you can't read anyway. If that is what is triggering one, that may be worth looking into.
  • 17 1
I haven't read any of the Beta stuff cause I don't feel like paying but from the titles it looks like its a lot of garbage takes like "Here's why climbing up fire roads bad" and followed by "Here's why climbing up fire roads good" I really just have no interest in paying to read random hot takes that probably just ramble on and on for the sake of getting people to get all bothered.
  • 35 3
I came to the conclusion that Beta wasn't worth paying for from the BETA Youtube bike reviews. It's mostly a bunch of people with bad body positioning (slowly) riding a bike and pretending like they're talented enough to actually speak to a bike's capabilities and nuances.

I would happily pay for bike reviews from Freehub Mag before I paid for reviews from Beta as that guy can actually ride a bike.
  • 11 0
I was incredibly surprised how low effort and un-inspriring those beta articles are. I too read a few without paying and was totally disappointed. I was actually considering paying until I read the articles.

@plustiresaintdead: Ok, doesn't sound too exciting then. Then again, let's call that subjective. Mountainbike magazines I've been reading (aside from Pinkbike) are Eskapee (online, printed in the Anthology books for offline joy), Dirt Magazine (mostly the paper magazines, didn't care too much about their online stuff), Cranked (paper) and other Misspent Summer books (mostly mtb racing yearbooks, but they've also got other stuff). I think Cranked and Eskapee/Anthology are mellow and thoughtful whereas Dirt was a bit more wild. Misspent Summers stuff generally gravitates towards Dirt (with both James McKnight and Jon Gregory onboard). I think Pinkbike is somewhere halfway. Not so thoughtful as Cranked, not as exciting as Dirt. In part probably also because the web format just doesn't lend itself that well towards creative formatting as well as a paper magazine does. If anyone if familiar with those magazines I mentioned, any idea where BETA lies in that spectrum (in the dimensions of depth, excitement and what other qualities you might consider relevant)? No BETA samples have been published so far (that I know of) on Pinkbike to give an impression of what it is all about. At least that's nice about this podcast I'd say. People can hear a few of those before they decide whether to dive in or not.
  • 6 0
@vinay: I would leave if I had to pay
  • 8 0
@fullendurbro: I agree. Most of the videos are a group of reviewers say on stools trying to look cool whilst drinking what ever on trend micro beer is currently required. There didn’t seem to be much actual riding
  • 10 0
Outside shields the Beta writers from PB commenters as if they were homeschooled children. Seriously who wants to read articles about the history of 20mm thru-axles or 31.8mm bars? They can't even participate in Field Tests because they ride slow as shit.
  • 4 0
@CM999: I think they just cater to a different (older) crowd. My takeaway from my last video I tried to watch is that a 40ish year old man and two 30-40 year old women are going to have a completely different experience on a bike than someone like me -- a (admittedly) total try hard who's been trying to snag an EWS quali for years.

If I was a 35 year old guy with a lower talent threshold I would probably be more keen to hear from that group.
  • 15 0
@fullendurbro: I'm on the wrong side of 35 with a lower talent threshold and I still don't want to hear from that group. I prefer writers & reviewers who are either hella fast, technically insightful, or entertaining and the Beta crew are not any of those things.

@fullendurbro: I’m sure your right. But I am that older rider these days having just past 50 and it certainly did nothing for me

@fullendurbro: I'm 45 and fully certified as low talent and I'm uninspired by what beta has to offer.
  • 2 1
What do you think would be fair a price to just pay for just the podcast? Beta is only $2/month.
  • 2 0
 @charmingbob: less than $2/month
  • 46 1
With so many great free podcasts and YouTubes out there, including ones that cover the WC, I shall not be paying for this one.

Good luck though. I'm a big Cathro fan and I love this concept (the race team, not the paywall)
  • 3 0
 Exactly.
  • 1 1
recomend some please... this podcast is the only one i listed Bike related.
  • 1 0
@Narro2: There are several out there, I provided a few, but by no means is that a comprehensive list. Good luck!
  • 1 0
@JDFF: thnx man, that will do
  • 1 0
to their defence, none of the other podcasts are also running a WC team. I think it's a shitty move to move this behind a paywall but if it will continue the team then maybe it's a good thing? Hopefully they can find another way to generate the income, like sponsors on the podcasts and advertising or something, most of the other big podcasters seem to do this.
  • 1 2
@JDFF: i remember trying the Downtime podcast once, and it was cringe, haha, i will give a try to the other ones.
  • 8 0
@Narro2: ahhh go on, give us a second chance!
  • 2 0
@downtimepodcast: haha, sorry man nothing personal, cheers!
  • 3 0
@Narro2: definitely give it another go. Pick a rider you want to hear about and start there. Big fan of Chris and what he's doing
  • 2 0
@raawbikerider: thanks for the support and stoked you're enjoying it!
  • 4 0
@raawbikerider: yeah i listened to the one from Aaron Gwin, it was pretty good, still pissed at the dirty moves they did to him, it definitely cost him his career. I'll give Downtime Podcast another try, enjoy your week guys. Cheers.
  • 2 0
@downtimepodcast: find Downtime a great companion to the Pinkbike podcast, very different approaches but quality. Randomly picked the sustainability and Maxxis tyre episodes today, both fascinating. And I'm looking forward to getting stuck into EP1, had a flick through when it arrived the other day, looks good. Thanks and keep up the good work... and all the best for the racing.
  • 2 0
@PawnSacrifice: thanks, really glad you're enjoying it and thanks for supporting EP1.
  • 27 2
I get the Beta situation is ruffling feathers, but if they are being genuine about the takeover giving them the funding to do stuff like this then I think it might be an overall good thing. I also saw a sale for Beta that was $24 for the year and even as a broke student I thought that was worth it for the Beta content.

Still mad about the trailforks situation tho.
  • 2 0
@lance-19 I'm not in the loop. Care to enlighten me on the trailforks situation?
  • 15 0
@jpat22: they built a successful business off the back of free labour from the community, particularly trail builders, saying that they would not charge in the future, and then turned it into a subscription model.
People say it's cheap, but when one only rides outside of one's 'zone' once a year, that $40 or whatever it is suddenly seems more expensive, especially when one counts in the countless hours digging.
  • 1 0
Have you tried Trailguide.net? Same as Trailforks but free
  • 1 0
@anyexcusetoride: Not really the same... since England only has 1 trail apparently.
  • 22 0
Let's just crowdfund some extra $$ for Henry. The caveat is a portion of the proceeds must be spent on shrooms and the ensuing madness must be reported on the next week's podcast.
"Welcome to It's All Downhill from Here...world cup news...bikes...interesting story...bikes...now it's time for everyone's favorite part of the podcast....Henry's Hallucinations!!"
--Podcast Gold--
  • 3 0
 I would listen to that!
  • 26 1
I can absolutely not confirm that money spent on Beta subscriptions will be funnelled directly into the team hallucinogen budget. Smile
  • 17 1
Just tuning in to see how many podcast listeners - all of us having $1000's in bike gear and probably $1/2 a million or more (combined bike gear of commenters on this article) are still bitching about $1.50 a month as if we're still crashing on our bud's couch in college or asking yr bartender buddy for a free beer once yr an adult.

I fully get that anyone doesn't wanna Sub to Beta (which is hilarious... and that name too, jeez) - I don't and don't really see too much reason to, but if regular ol' PB was subscription, I'd do it. BUT ONLY if @mikelevy could deliver 2 or more often 3 podcasts per week. I live for it.
  • 17 3
Question is: would the race team, podcast or Henry following the circuit have happened without Outside? If not, £1.51 a month is ok with me. Cathro is essential viewing, Henry is the most honest journalist around and outside of Bernard Kerr and Masters, complete access to the pits is hard to find on Youtube. Fair play to Outside and PB for total transparency.
  • 1 0
Does suck that the print edition doesn't ship to the UK...same with the merch.
  • 13 0
No the team would not have happened without Outside.

International print options for the magazine should be coming soon—never fast enough though! It's also 40 pages bigger for 2022.
  • 8 6
Cathro was doing a lot of the things he’s doing for Pinkbike long before he got a contract with them. I honestly think that Cathro by himself could’ve done the whole return to World Cup racing and the World Cup team better without Pinkbike.
  • 8 1
@TheSlayer99: got to wonder why Cathro took the deal then?
  • 1 1
@AdmiralHazzar: they say money makes the world go round, so Cathro has to be making a bag for working in the bike industry.
  • 4 0
have a look at what Paul Aston is doing if you want honest reviews
  • 18 6
I’m expecting all the paywall complainers to donate to Wyns privateer fund if ‘they just want to support racing’…
  • 15 0
 Done
  • 1 0
I thought these racers were supposed to be hard up and badly paid. Still seem to have plenty of cash to splash
  • 16 7
Aaaaand there it is. The first big Pinkbike thing put behind the pay wall. Man, I have little interest in most of the Beta stuff and long form articles, but this is content I do want. I get that it is probably needed, but I would much rather listen to a bunch of ads at this point than fit another subscription into my budget. Bummer.
  • 8 3
Except that this cast is actually not behind a paywall and if you pull up apple or whatever, there it is. Heard: they are planning to put it under Beta access only and I'm not a subscriber but then in that case: pass. Plenty of other media out there, but yr cryin' wolf before there's a wolf.

The real bummer is having to 2 more damn months for the next WC race - what effing moron thought of this?
  • 10 1
This is unfortunate. I applaud Pink Bike and Outside for betting on Ben and letting him put a team together. I hope they do well. If moving it behind the paywall is how they are going to pay the riders, great. I just wish they led with that when the idea was first floated. Having a few episodes here before going behind the wall is only going to make things worse for everyone: the team, the riders and the commenters. Has anyone said a good thing above about the team or about the content in the linked podcast? No, they are simply exploding over the paywall. If you led at the beginning of the year with, "we are starting a team and beta is paying for it", I think you would have less vitriol over it. I am not here to troll, call out beta, or complain about paywalls, just making an observation.
  • 2 0
Good point. Lots of talk about keeping it open and telling PB users what’s coming, then content just slides behind the paywall. Surely this has been in the pipes for ages? I’d be more likely to pay if I knew what I’d be getting.
  • 19 0
Just want to be clear: the Pinkbike Racing video series and team will be free on Pinkbike.
  • 10 4
Outside: “Appropriately scaling extensive deliverables” through a paywall.

See that online corporate BS generator works!
  • 7 0
I WAS SO JAZZED TO SEE THIS................enter credit card information.........wellllll shit looks like they got me
  • 4 0
I pay (or have paid) for beta, it's not that great imo. I don't think I'll be re-subscribing next year. If I'm paying, I want nice log form interviews/podcasts/content about actual interesting characters/ stories - Beta could do better.... The benchmark for my podcast content at the moment is Jase Macalpine (gypsy tales), Shredder Mag (Stuz leel) is my benchmark for MTB print at the moment. This is the standard, Henry is good, let him do the World Cup stuff with Cathro, I've paid my money.
  • 5 1
I just think it's a wee bit hypocritical that they expect us to pay but it's also still sponsored by EVO. I thought the paywall content was supposed to have the "benefit" of financial independence to maintain journalistic integrity, which I can understand. But isn't this the worst of both worlds?
  • 3 0
 This one is free. Smile
  • 4 0
Excellent - having devoured the Pinkbike back back catalogue I dipped into GMBN and an episode with Ben Cathro, Henry was hosting, great episode, bodes very well for this series. Really hoping the team pulls out some strong results this season.

Really happy to support the content, is there anyway to just donate Patreon style and send the money straight to the team? The Weekly Planet podcast set up its own service, Big Sandwich, for something similar to Patreon but without the middle man. If I'm honest I'm not sure I quite understood Henry's Ponzi scheme, nice touch recording it in the shower room of his private jet to make him sound authentically needy. If anyone's wondering how big the plane is, Ben fit in the smallest room in it.

Or maybe a gofundme for the race team and whatever Henry's story was.

Not trying to be difficult but not fussed about getting Beta, I would like to be clear what my money is going on, and, selfishly, would like to keep the podcast where it is so I can listen to it where I listen to podcasts.

Oh, and sell replica race jerseys, look amazing, sure they'd fly off the shelves.
  • 1 0
Missed that ep. but will have to check. Question tho: is it me or does Martin interrupt unlike any other host (anywhere)? I find it nearly unbearable. He does it over & over...kinda hard to listen to. None of the other GMBN hosts seem to do that.
  • 2 0
@Mtn-Goat-13: I didn't stick around with the GMBN pod, that may have been why. The one mentioned was Episode 34 - you'll be happy it's just Henry and Ben. I've now got stuck into Downtime - which Ben's also been on [obviously] in 2021 talking around plans in the making for a race team.I think Downtime's a good companion for Pinkbike; both on Spotify and seemingly regular crossovers, but little repetition.

Trying other MTB podcasts highlighted how good Levy is at this hosting business, continually crashing into the scenery must have unlocked something useful in his brain.
  • 2 0
@PawnSacrifice: Yeah, the GMBN pod is erratic, plus the bagged it a while. I'll recheck that ep. with Henry/Ben. PB is my #1 easily (and that's hilarious about Levy's brain - agreed! He really does have the hosting down pat & is funny as hell) but Downtime is classic & Chris's format & connections are incredible. Levy does kill though w/ his humor and almost always starting off bashing Kaz.

BTW have you heard the Singletracks Mag / Making up the Numbers pod from UK? Its good except for bizarrely corny Monster Truck Show voice-intro's guy that introduces the pod...it sounds like US wrestling show voice or something...so weird.
  • 2 0
@Mtn-Goat-13: Cool, will give that a try on the next change up.
  • 4 0
I can understand the sentiment here, alot of PB readers have invested alot of their time commenting, suggesting stuff, adding to the forums and the buy-sell pages. I'm guessing that when you add all this up the amount of user generated text on the site outweighs the official PB generated articles, many times over. This is where the actual value in PB is, the sheer number of non paid active contributors and general readers who then can be served mountain bike related adds (which we don't mind viewing and often click).

When you take something we all want (a DH racing team) and call it The Pinkbike down hill racing team and then create the Pinkbike Racing Podcast and put the podcast behind a Beta Pay Wall, people here are going to feel ripped off especially those of that happily dedicate the time to contribute to PB.
  • 1 0
Much better stated than my dusty, rambling diatribe below... Agreed. I'm not even at all opposed to Beta (minus that stupid name...still can't figure out why "beta') - just don't see why this couldn't have been rolled out more as a community thing we could contribute to beyond / besides Beta. Totally love Henry & Ben & may just subscribe to help support but I don't see why that has to be only via Beta.
  • 3 0
World Cup preview & post-race shows from Downtime Podcast with Chris Kilmurray, Neko & Eliot. Moving Andrews Needle with Sven (& others), Wyn TV, Fingers crossed for Vital Slideshows and Misspent Summers had some really great creative race coverage last season. There's heaps of quality stuff out there. Some of it's even free Wink

FYI - While I like hearing about PB's editorial processes as a journo myself, I'm not so fussed on knowing about your internal budgeting arrangements.

I just think it's important to know that we didn't take from the Pinkbike Racing budget to do this stuff.

Cannot wait to hear about the pinkbike team this year. Walk the Talk was brilliant so this will be special
  • 2 0
I've paid for Beta, I don't think I'll re-subscribe. If I'm paying I want nice long form interviews / podcasts with interesting people that have interesting stories. Jase Macalpine (gypsy tales) is the best at the podcast side of things the moment imo and Shedder mag is the best in terms of print content at the moment. Henry is good, let him do the DH stuff with Cathro - I've paid my money.
  • 5 1
Lots of good free mountain biking podcasts out there kids, Pinkbike is the best one IMHO but there is no way this is going to work.

As Henry isn’t part of the race team I look forward to him telling us what the team riders break and how often
  • 2 0
Wow... People really like to bitch about Pinkbike/beta/outside. The podcast was nice to listen to. I love the concept of the team and how Henry is tired to it and getting good access to the pits as a result. What the website is doing by combining a Devo team and content creator is spot on. It would be really nice if everything would be free, but it's not and the concept of this team is awesome.

Please change the name to the Outside or Beta Racing Team. This puts a real downer on things for me. The erosion of PB free content has begun. We all knew it would happen, doesn't mean we have to like it. In protest I imposes the sanction of no longer read/view/listen to any articles and just go straight to the comment section. #FREETHEPODCAST

Pinkbike peaked right before Covid and the outside buyout. Their content has slowly gone downhill from there, with the outside buyout really killing a lot of the quality.

Really looking forward to this podcast series as well as the other video content that will come out of this project. I think this is up there with Neko's Frameworks series as one of the projects I'm most looking forward to this season. I've subscribed to Beta and I think it'll easily be worth it. Henry and Ben are an entertaining pair.

Honest comments / questions for @mikekazimer @mikelevy @henryquinney @brianpark @sarahmoore ...pardon the length, just pontificating & nothing is a snipe here:

It seems pretty clear that PB commenters are easily the most hardcore PB fans on who feel like they're losing out on community & core when they hear DH podcasts will only be on The Illuminati Big MTB Paywall that is perceived to be Beta.

I'm curious why PB didn’t just propose / present PB Racing in whole or even in part as a patreon / fundraiser / promo / kickstarter / subscription or just plain buy-in for PB fans to kick into vs. Beta/Outside subscriptions (and not that the latter couldn't also fund PB racing – we know it ain't cheap).

Maybe I'm wrong, but I would guess that hardcore PB fans comprise the majority of the DH race-fan crowd on the entire PB/Beta/Outside platform, while Beta is the more general trail / gravel / “we are just biking” crowd. PB literally defines MTB for a lot of us and it’s an identity / community / OCD mtb thing. Beta, well staffed & intentioned as it is, does not have this reputation, and it’s so new that no one outside of PB seems to even know it exists.

Most of the core PB fans & commenters at least do not seem to want to pay for Beta / Outside (I'm not yet & still unsure why I would) but WOULD (or may) pay for / subscribe to / contribute to a "PB Racing Team" in some format. Maybe ya incentivise w/ t-shirts, jerseys, those fresh PB Nursing Home Slippers, or chances to win a bike or tix to a US race for kicking in on the team or subscribing / funding / patreon sponsorship. Seems like more of a sound way to get the PB core & cult fan-base to support this vs. presenting it via Brown Beta which just doesn't have the history or cult status that PB does. Maybe this is just low hanging fruit (?)

I know there's a lot more to it than what I or anyone blabbing here know about, and decisions have prob been made. I am saying that the crux of the Paywall-Turd-In-The-Punchbowl topic for the PB Racing podcast at least is that PB fans feel like they are losing something core, secret, culty, underground & community-based (like when bands get too big or favorite clubs / eateries are lost to tourists, etc) to a grey corporate monster. So, they just get pissed, turn off, give up & defecate on the comment section vs. supporting what is otherwise a highly supportable idea.

There are plenty of ways to do anything but it seems PB Racing is being presented as “PB Racing – brought to you by Beta” so it's just another blow to something core, secret, and deeply valuable to most PB fans, whereas if having been presented as something PB fans could sponsor & be directly involved in, could probably raise the roof. Just thinking out loud...

I don't understand the pay wall comments - I can listen to this on Spotify fine! Is that because I have Spotify premium? F*ck knows, it's working so I'm happy.

@henryquinney @bencathro can we get a bike check for the PB race team? That would be ace! If there is one and it's pay walled let me know, that's the sort of thing I want to see and would maybe pay for
  • 1 0
Love having the new PB cast - til its blocked anyway (not a Beta subscriber & not sure I see why to do that yet) HOWEVER:

1) to PB-Podcast-Is-My-Herion crowd (me), this new cast does not replace the weekly standard PB podcast for the week @mikelevy - where's my fix? AWESOME, thanks. JK of course - but not. Also - when are we going to one podcast per day? Ready for it.

2) are the racing podcasts only going to be after the actual race? Seems like there's plenty to rant about otherwise - what kinda bikes & gear do these guys have, where are they riding now, what were the National race results (general) and team actions then - so many possibilities vs. having to wait 2 months after Lourdes...
  • 1 0
@henryquinney you said @mikelevy had promised to "deliver the edited content the day after the race in Canada" you realise this means he has until the day after the round at Mont-Sainte-Anne.

P.S. Happy to pay to support the DH team.

Except that you can stream it from the PB podcast as normal. They're maybe gonna do this in the future and while I'd rather it just be part of the normal PB week (in fact, a 2nd or 3rd episode since I live for the PB podcasts now) - whatever. Its just some jabber about a race that every other cast is going to cover anyway. Not a loss.

 @Mtn-Goat-13:

The release states: "And full disclosure, at some point we'll reserve the full-length episodes of the Pinkbike Racing Podcast for members"

I don't know about you, but that sure sounds like a paywall to me...

a DH racing podcast is actually of interest to me, unlike 95% of the regular PB podcast which mostly just revolve around dumping on DH and giving handies to the enduro-trends in the industry. his was redeeming content (in my opinion) for PB that unfortunately has been barricaded behind a paywall

Sounds like the PB team needs a microphone sponsor. Or Henry wasn't paying attention when Levy taught him how to setup the audio.

They are doing these from the back of their van, so it's never going to sound that great unless they line it with something like acoustic foam.

@IMeasureStuff: that’s not much of an excuse. They are supposed to be professional. It is how they earn a living

Is any of the sub money going towards a mic for Quinney!?

Okay, pretend you are racing professional DH. if you had to give up one what would it be: front brake or clipless pedals/shoes?

Should it not be cashed the Beta team and not the on team of beta’s paywall is funding it

Hope there will be a video series following the team this season.

Keep the normal podcast free. I don't care if you put the race podcast on beta.

Super excited until the may have to pay to hear the greatness......cycling is so cheap why should I care?

Not interested in paying for MTB content when we can get so much for free. One way they could get me is if they brought back DIRT magazine... I'd gladly pay for that though.
