Mike Levy's Last Podcast

The podcast will continue with Henry, Kaz, Sarah, and the rest of the PB editorial crew. Levy will drop in from time to time, but we'll have to finally change the cover art. Art by Taj Mihelich

I was hoping we wouldn't ever have to do this podcast, but as of a few weeks ago, Mike Levy has officially left the Pinkbike team. Kazimer and I sat down with Levy in my cold, cramped garage to reflect on his time at Pinkbike and read a bunch of Levy stories from coworkers and industry friends—including a chat with the venerable Richard Cunningham. There's a short detour about aliens, Bigfoot, and sim racing, before we talk about Levy's plans for the future and end the podcast to avoid getting emotional and weird. Apologies in advance for the strong language, this one is a bit raw.

Featuring a rotating cast of the editorial team and other guests, the Pinkbike podcast is a weekly update on all the latest stories from around the world of mountain biking, as well as some frank discussion about tech, racing, and everything in between.

Subscribe to the podcast via your preferred service (Apple, Spotify, RSS, Megaphone, etc.), or visit the Pinkbike Podcast tag page for the complete list of episodes.

mikelevy - this is as close to mama birding as things got. Levy was so tired he needed to be hand fed.
Levy's unpaid intern has had to hand feed occasionally him over the years.

Mike Levy s pinkmartian.com
Radek made pinkmartian.com in Levy's honour.

Thinking about gearboxes.
Strong opinions about gearboxes.

Skidz w Levy
Skids are serious business.

Mike Levy's been a huge part of the Pinkbike team for many years, and has had a massive impact on the sport. We're gutted to see him go, but he'll still pop in from time to time as part of the extended Pinkbike family forever.

We joke about it in the podcast but, despite him being totally against the idea, I honestly believe he belongs in the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

Thanks for everything, Mike.

We didn’t even talk about linkage forks or bikes with not enough travel, and we definitely missed the comment section. I want to say that there’s zero chance I would have stuck around for so long if we didn’t have such an active and entertaining community, so my time here is mostly your fault rather than anything I’ve done.

I’ve heard bike industry folk talk shit about the PB comment section many times over the years. I would always think about how boring it must be to not have a load of people instantly telling you where you f*cked up, pointing out your (many) spelling mistakes and, if you managed not to bumble it up too badly, maybe even give you some praise. And so many laughs. Never change, Pinkers.

The comment section has made this Pinkbike journey about a thousand times more entertaining than it would have been otherwise, so thank you!

I could never have imagined where this whole thing would end up, that I’d ever be able to do this as a job, and that I’d be part of such an amazing community.

Thank you so much. You are a large part of the reason why 15-year-old me joined this platform and even larger part of the reason I stuck around. Can't wait to see what you get up to next!

Pinkbike comment section does a great job of holding brands to account.

Questionable performance claims, unreasonable pricing, cringey marketing spiel, elephants in the room that the brand is ignoring - Pinkbike comment section will tell you all about it. Rewards the brands that are doing it right and punishes the brands doing it wrong.

There may be some exceptions where brands get an unjustified beasting (Orange Bikes get a tough wrap) but most of the time the beastings are fully justified and often times there's very genuine praise on here. Long live Pinkbike comment section!

Good luck in whatever comes next for you. I'd like to note that Henry is no-Levy when it comes to the podcast, you were definitely a natural at keeping the podcast moving and making sure the relevant stuff was talked about.

I was worried that maybe you were 'institutionalized' often, hence your recurring sabbaticals (if true, sorry for outing you, mental health is a thing society needs to recognize and talk openly about more)!

This new modern age version of PB doesn't deserve you anyway Levi. (or maybe you are needed now more then ever?). Sarcastic in the best way possible, knows what real freeride really is, pretty sure you know what being a dirtbag who can only afford their dumb hobby is, and most importantly I feel like you really understand the mtb world and its history better then most newer persons in the industry. The end of a PB era for sure. We all wish you the best. Stay muddy and lost sir.

  • 37 1
To me, bike industry folk talking shit about the PB comment section shows a disconnect from reality. Many PR people have told me to not even look, perhaps they're trying to 'control the message' or feel threatened by feedback, but frankly I find this community to be enthusiastic, smart and good humored (on average, sucky outlier individuals are outliers).

Anyway, thanks for your contribution @mikelevy, it was a pleasure meeting you at Sea Otter last year. You're a special human with a gift for distilling and diseminating stories quickly, concisely and with a high entertainment factor.

Also thank you for "stankshuns".

Hearing my hero, @mikelevy, say my name and read my comment back when “comment gold” was still part of the podcast is one of my proudest bike-related moments. Still trying to figure out which section of my resume that goes on…
  • 6 1
@VtVolk: I had a mention too in comment gold, although my reference was "some guy." lol
  • 5 1
Levy, I’ve been a PB member since 2001(bought my first legit mtn bike off here) and have read many of your articles throughout the years. Even when I took a break for a decade and came back, during Covid, I was pleasantly surprised to still find your name on here. Thanks for your genuine and solid contribution to the game. You will be missed! Good luck on your future endeavors, and ride on!

Great work here, you will be missed and I'm sad you won't be here for the demise of the rear derailleur. Grim Donut was genius but still not sure about downcountry. My favorite video was your pumptrack race and favorite story was the bike park trip. Wish you the best.

As a retired radio guy it is obvious to me you are a natural broadcaster/presenter/ video host, what ever you want to call it. But what I appreciate most is that while you passed along reams and reams of cool info, you always kept it fun! And isn’t that what we love most about mountain biking? We do it to put a smile on our face. It’s all about having fun. You added to that experience for me. Thanks Mike. Best of luck.

A huge heartfelt seeya later from PB podcast #88 Comment Gold winner (about Henry eating shrooms) - me

Thanks for everything. You are legend, and you defined the pod for me & my buds, got us thru the pandemic with hope & smiles-for-miles, and its been amazing.

Heres to hoping you get abducted by aliens, solve all the conspiracies, shred all the gnar and enjoy a daily cup of steaming Monster Energy Drink on your favorite overpass while staring at streetlights thinking They Have Arrived.

Hard to imagine PB w/o your pod-hosting, articles & humor but the fans will survive, and we will have been better educated and humored to the tilt. Thank you so much my man!

What a legend! What a podcast! What a triumvirate! Saddened to know this is the last, but I really enjoyed this episode. The OG Mikes and Brian chemistry is fantastic, super entertaining and sounds very natural. I loved the old stories, I loved the RC guest appearance, it was just like PB pods from 2020 and 2021.  @mikelevy As all of these comments have said, you have been, and will continue to be missed here. Your sense of humor and attitude is one of a kind. I love that a legend like RC mentioned how your willingness to call out the industry led to many significant changes. To add onto that, I think it was your ability to deliver them in a humorous and self deprecating way that made the holy industry types listen and grow the pinkbike audience. For my own selfish reasons, I hope you find a way to share your unique perspectives and gift of gab with the world again...whether that's on non-human intelligent life forms, F1, Sim Racing or Linkage Driven Gravel Bike Forks.

Your work at Pinkbike was very important to me as I became immersed in the MTB community. Picking up the sport only a few years ago (at 40) your words "Just the right amount of stupid" capture the excitement and escape from normality that makes riding in the woods so appealing.  @pinkbert: it’s not just pinkibike, corporate buyout is happening rampant in every sector the past year. It’s just the financial market that causes this to happen. Another and different “pinkbike” will emerge if it is “that bad”

@haroDJkid: 100%. Pinkbike, of course, doesn't make up the entirety of the MTB industry.

The semis are toast and riders will always change companies and companies will always be changing hands. But Levy's character was the essence of Pinkbike and it wont be the same without him.
  • 1 0

  • 2 1
@NoahColorado: Thanks, I've now got coffee to clean up.
  • 3 0
Good analogy. 2023 was really the 2020 for bikes & legends. Another one gone now...
  • 2 0
Feels a bit like a delayed, slo-mo bitch slap from the pandemic. Bikes (and Mikes) got us through those days, but it’s all catching up now
  • 5 1
@owl-X: Butting in here. Doesn't seem to be totally stated yet, but on numerous pods people like like Whitely and others in the know are saying semi's are done. Discovery took a bath last year on semis as well - twice as much to film, with no return so they're likely lobbying for it too. I don't think anyone's going to tolerate it. Anyway - it's piecemeal evidence but - some evidence.
  • 4 1
@Mtn-Goat-13: I’ve heard the near-unanimous opinion that semis suck, but no indication that Warner Brothers / Discovery agree or are planning a change their format. Whiteley said he’d ditch semis, most riders who’ve voiced an opinion seem to agree, but I’ve not heard or read anything that indicates a change is going to happen. Tahnee Seagrave (on that latest Downtime) offered up her take and it sounds more likely than WBD deciding to finally listen to the riders/teams/brands: the organizers have pitched and sold their TV show, and it promises X amount of screen time to advertisers. That’s their format. They can more easily package it up, way easier to control showing 30 / 10 racers. And you know that thing when the new boss sticks with their shitty plan against all logic, simply because it’s their plan—not the old guys’? That’s big in the entertainment industry, that’s their favorite shit: oh yeah we cut that TV show, that movie was under tge old regime, we’re taking this in a better direction.
They haven’t listened to the riders or fans yet—why would they start now?
Go back and look at what Chris Ball said they were going to do. He’s 1-for-63. They made the race tape a little cleaner.
Hey, by the way, Chris Ball, where you at?—we still have some questions…or have you been absorbed into the very bullshit machine you were so excited to protect us from lol
  • 2 1
@owl-X: Agreed mostly but also - evidence is evidence whether its from the actual source or not and you're right on all this for sure... I'm just willing to call it evidence but true, semis being gone is not evident. I'm 1000% hoping semi's die, but some of the gossipers probably know more about whats up than any of us even if they don't say so precisely. But ditto the cynacism. I have no formal / insider evidence and I don't think anyone does, but the lameness of semi's was obvious this year and I'll wager its gonna get nuked next year... but maybe yr right. Thinking for just a second - and knowing what c*nts UCI are - I can see them not budging.

@Mtn-Goat-13 @tremeer023 semis were strange and seem against the spirit of DH (one run madness), and I would love to go back to the format that made me fall in love with the sport…but one thing WB Discovery have been consistent with from the start is that small final field…and unfortunately they can show we don’t need to know about a Denim Destroyer or an early Kolb—those guys never won so they don’t matter. I love the idea that crazy mofo can lay off the brakes, clear some psycho gap, go berserk and win…but that doesn’t happen. I want to believe, but it’ll be harder when it’s the same 30 dudes in the big brother house or whatever…I’m still going to watch…I’d watch Bruni tie his shoes…but arrrrgggghh make it BETTER with all that money!

I finally listened to this podcast and Levy clearly has gone off the deep end with ufo nonsense, if you listen to the end of it. He wasted too much time on YouTube watching conspiracy videos instead of watching debunking videos, probably while on his lengthy hiatus. Still had a good career. Pinkbike has nobody to step in to fill the void and this site officially has zero charisma now.

@PACNW-MTB: Because I always do while you are burnt toast like the semis. It was in Whiteleys interview, but only for careful listeners so don't bother.

@owl-x: Warner Bros doesn't control race organization, Chris Ball does.
  • 1 2
@DoubleCrownAddict: The debunk vids are better than the pro-ufo vids... always lights reflecting off windows, pranks, and made up junk. If true ufo's / aliens were here (which is physically impossible w/ fuel required and craft size) we'd have mindblowing video coverage of aliens instead of 1970's looking grainy, shaky videos that look like your sad uncle made them.

The whole thing perfectly corresponds to human flight - which speaking of... imagine yr a hunter gatherer or simple agrarian people when the 1st balloon zeppelin then planes and later space-craft were tested then ripped across the sky in vast "uncivilized" areas for decades. The people who lived there would have literally had "alien" or "ufo" experiences but with the aircraft actual other people on their planet - and would have no way whatsoever to distinguish airforce jets or spacecraft from "aliens"...which is another issue because it entirey discredit their actual experiences here with our modern flight tech. Hell, if any of these people had even seen cars or mountain bikes (and us in our helmets & gear) they'd say we were not from the planet.

Point: were the aliens on out own planet & the alien / ufo fascination is just creaming ourselves that someone has built a slightly better rocketship. Who knows less about their very own planet right now than humans? No other form of life is as alien here than we are so the whole alien / ufo thing is a sad jjoke of who we've become here at home.
  • 1 4
@Mtn-Goat-13: You have a valid point I had never considered.

If there were aliens and they could put out the effort to get here they would either introduce themselves to us as friends or take our resources, they wouldn't just fly around and secretly watch us for decades. The whole UFO conspiracy simply lacks the most very basic logic. Only a simple minded dupe would believe that shit.
  • 1 1
@DoubleCrownAddict: Pretty much - tho you said it better than me. My whole point was we've had millions (10s? 100s?) of (actually cool) people right here who have seen modern craft of all types and considered it "alien" - and yet that's' us. Its also modern snobbery over hunting/gathering / agrarian people who, compared to modern people, are "simple" - but also not. Complex knowledge of land & techniques - and just being happy vs. us.

You might have the better point tho: aliens secretly whipping around here for generations now: absurd. Especially with the resource they'd obviously need for anything: food, repairs, fuel. Technology is massively costly - even our "simple" bikes - massive teams of millions of people for resource extraction, founding/smelting/converting, transport, advanced assembly skills... people are not thinking through whatsoever what "aliens" would require to be here and it would be massively obvious.

To me the universe is teeming with life - possibliities for it in by the billions just in our solar system, not just on on Earth. But I'm also talking life, not just humanity (which is just a tiny blip of it) so I don't see anything wild at all thinking there's other forms of life anywhere. We know for a fact that fungal spores can pass in & out of the atmosphere & float around in space too so - there's your basic compound for life, probably scattered by the unthinking bajillions around the universe of billinon x billions of years. The "aliens" are in fact - not. Its just biological life, and (hey, I'm a scientist / biologist) - its a lot more intersting than the modern fantasy of humanoid aliens...that's just another projection of the parasites we've become (in my view).

PS - Im an opinionated a*shole btw.
  • 1 2
@Mtn-Goat-13: zzz. Yeah I'm totally down with the idea of intelligent life on other planets and don't doubt it for a second. But they face all the same challenges we do in the impossible challenge of traveling through deep space. We live in a world of astrological numbnuts born from Star Trekkies who thought you could one day travel through space with the push of a button without even really considering the challenges. It's as if TV has broadened our horizons and made us complete idiots at the same time. Elon is the personification for me, although I respect Tesla as a company.

We are stuck here on this planet we've likely destroyed with nobody to help us and no escape. If aliens were hanging around to watch it go down without offering assistance that's not very humane and makes us better than them. Not happening in that advanced of a culture if they can travel through deep space. Are they gonna wait till the last minute to save us? Exponentially doubtful.

I wasted 15 minutes researching UFO's today, which is way too much to justify. But this is the most convincing article I found on it and actually very heartfelt, broad thinking, and realist.

www.washingtonpost.com/magazine/2021/08/11/stop-ufo-mania-no-evidence-of-aliens
  • 1 1
@DoubleCrownAddict: Astrological numbnuts - CLASSIC! I'm gonna use that one for the rest of my life now. Agreed, again - the modernization of all this has in fact made us dumber and not even thinking clearly about it. I'd say it probably is possible ''aliens'' could travel space, maybe, with some type of miracle fuel...but it seems highly unlikely and so much of all this fascination about them is just their freaking ride... the bike they're on. They wouldn't only be about the ride - they'd need to eat, shit, have some fun, chill out, settle down, copulate, tell some jokes and have a purpose in life other than waxing & fueling the badass ship... and all living things already do all that (minus the ship for most). I"ll check your vid though - much obliged. For me the all this is well intentioned but entirely misplaced...what could be more alien than massive 275 yr old deep luminescent sea creatures, tarsiers, any number of grasshoppers that can just 1000 times their body length in a split second - or even the final hunter/ gatherer peoples here who, mind you, are still here 4 million years later living the same hard / good / funny / sad / normal life we all do.

All that being said - I f*cking love my bikes.
  • 3 1
@tremeer023: Don't have time to check a 23 min Cox vid (have watched hours of Cox tho & he's the man). You'lll have to filter out yr point or direct me to a couple mins section of the clip tho. As a 20-yr sci-papers editor & evolutionary biologist / ecologist, so far there is zero in "aliens" that would differ much from the various forms of life that exist here since the foundational DNA and physical basis of the universe would be identical). Cox fully supports the idea life is fully throughout the universe but doubts that physical fuel / machine travel, even from habitatal planets within just this universe exists or could exist (that I'm aware of). At least, he seems to know of zero actual evidence of it (again, maybe wrong...not a Cox expert).
  • 1 1
@DoubleCrownAddict Read that WaPo article... I feel like I wrote this & many of the arguments I've thought of for yrs. its prob the single best synopsis / article on why ufos / aliens just don't exist. Is there hearsay evidence? A#1 - 95% of which is fabricated nonsense anyway. Actual evidence? Literally none. No ships. No DNA. Nothing. There are so many holes in the idea - all of this hyped up by media / tv shows / faulty sightings (lights relfectiing on windows, rural people seeing miltary experimental craft or even balloons at 70,000 feet, etc) --- not to mention insane levels of anthro-centric assumptions (why would aliens be so fascinate by humans vs. whales, monkeys or mega-herd wildlife, or forests) - clearly they can see we're destroying all of that.

All of the logic & factlessness makes it impossible to listen to alien-worshippers seriously. It's just more grasping for something "out there" when in fact, everything humans need is right here (tho we're choking the shit out of that daily, self included - I'm a resource gobbling orc too). Humans are the aliens here, in my view.

No other form among million on this planet is as out of place, stupid, smart but unable to change or stop itself, or unfocused on the point of even being here: living a good life, then giving it up and not trying to immortalize ones-self.
  • 1 0
@DoubleCrownAddict: Do the math. It says there IS life beyond earth.
  • 2 1
@Mtn-Goat-13: yeh that was basically my point. The scale of the universe is difficult to fathom. Even if there is other intelligent life out there (quite possible), the physics of visiting it (or vice versa) is virtually impossible. A vehicle that can travel faster than the speed of light is effectively a time machine.
  • 2 1
@PACNW-MTB: Not any math to be done. Answer is we don't know, but as @tremeer023 pointed out - anything that could reach speed of light for travel = a time machine. Maybe that exists. Life is also not just humans, humanoid or beings that can travel in ships. Its billions more species that actually matter more, and which ultimately - get the last laugh. The universe is prob be teeming w/ life, the "math" shows that, but the fact is - the math and none of these commetns actually prove that. Its the best guess w/ the facts we think we know, and thus (scientifically speaking) - a theory and not a law.
  • 2 1
@tremeer023: Well said. I'm sure Cox gets to that. Cox for years points out the massive meteor collision entirely shattering the earth, wiping out dinosaurs (though birds, reptiles & others are actually survivors) and setting life back a few 100 million years - thus leading to humans now - is brain-melting. No meteor and Minaar doesn't win shit, we don't buy cool helmets & bike gear. Ever, because we wouldn't exist.

From what I recall he says "we are alone" but that the liklihood of life universally (and even parallel) is very high. There's just not pure data whatsoever to show anyone else exists (or has a fancier intersteller downhill bike than we've built) yet. Ultimately the alien fasciantion is all about 1) how cool is the rig they came in on 2) what are the clearly-humanoid drivers like and 3) will they kill or save us and 4) "you're a sucker man...you've been lied to". Basically a weaker version of religion that religion already is.
  • 1 1
@Mtn-Goat-13: Yep. That was alotta wurdz to agree with what I just said.
  • 1 2
@PACNW-MTB: Except 1) this is a comment board, so "wurdz" are the norm, and plenty of them; 2) yr comment didn't span a very wide parameter of concepts, hence more "wurds" on my part. f you don't like reading more words, just move the f*ck on. X is 280, maybe better suited to simple points.
  • 1 2
@PACNW-MTB: Keep working on those those reading skills.

@Mtn-Goat-13: It's almost as ridiculous as the people who actually believe there will be a zombie apocalypse someday. I'll pay attention when we're either attacked or if we see them come out of their spaceship. Humans are definitely the 'take over and destroy everthing' aliens on this planet.
  • 1 1
@Mtn-Goat-13: No it didn't span a, "wide parameter...", It was very concise and didn't need any help from you.
  • 1 1
@DoubleCrownAddict: LOL. Pot, meet the kettle.....
  • 1 2
@Mtn-Goat-13: Since I did a little UFO research I've had some ufo articles pop up in my news stream, thanks @mikelevy
This is another great article that is extremely interesting, funny, and frustrating to read at the same time. UFO belief is just a cultural phenomenon that builds upon itself with the sensationalist feedback loop it creates, which is fueled by the conspiracy media which profits from it and the stupid people who believe in it. It ALL started in 47 and took off for awhile and died but then was recycled by stoner Vietnam protesters who didn't trust the government. That's what created the idea of the 'deep state', which has led to so much distrust of the government and media. The article also explains how Trump's stupid election lies and the Jan 6 insurrection wouldn't have happened without all this UFO belief nonsense. UFO believers deserve much worse than just being laughed at.

@DoubleCrownAddict: Couldn't said it any better. UFOs, ghosts, bigfoot (and now the deepstate monster, which - if it existed, would've already cement-booted a certain conman long ago). It's all huckin' a buck. Gotta say I'm bummed Levy's falling for it and while its funny in a way, its a loss of actual reason, facts, science & such. Levy was the shit w/ bikes but I ain't following a popcorn trail to D&D gameboard junk. I believe you've nailed it succinctly in your last comment here. Well done.
  • 2 0
@Mtn-Goat-13: wait, the dude is really talking about aliens like this? oof...

Conmen love it when you announce you're a mark...religious, conspiracy nut, any of that. Easy money (well, easier money than trying to get it from a non-believer)...it's not helpful to push any sort of BS, no matter how inconsequential it seems...all the little things add up and we end up with...what we have now...

the spiritual-to-fascist route seems to be the one I'm seeing most lately.

Snap out of it Levy!

denial. - Levy is just taking leave - he’ll be back

anger. - f*ck off and leave Levy alone he’s taking time off

bargaining. - trying to lure Levy and his alien overlords back to Squamish with Tim Hortons and monster

depression. - will pinkbike ever be the same? Who will argue with people now?

acceptance. Oh right - Henry he doing a fabulous job having good strong (incorrect) opinions and running a great podcast.

We’ll miss you Levy xx

But selfishly, for the PB crowd, darn this is bummer news. We'll miss you even more than we already did this year.

This sucks, although I felt like the writing was on the wall for a while. Levy was the best and most consistent part of PB, ever since he started there. More than that, it felt like he was the core soul of the operation. I've felt like PB has been on the decline since the Outside acquisition, but the fact that he remained meant that soul still existed, and that still shined through on the content he was involved with. No disrespect to anyone else holding their own on the PB staff, but it just won't be the same, or even close. Good luck with what's next Mike!!

@mkul7r4: Agree - however if I have one complaint though (a legal requirement in the comments here I know) - it’s that Dario’s laugh sounds a lot like Brians - or someone else who sounds like Brian's laughing in the back ground of a lot of podcasts. (Levy? Henry? Dario? kaz?)

I’m not asking them to change their laugh - it’s just one of the things I think about when I should be sleeping at night.

I kind of love it makes me think Brian is (mostly) silently creeping around in the background of episodes.

When Outside took over and they were doing a podcast about the changes we could expect, I had a feeling — one of those moments — kinda like when a professor walks into a college classroom and says, “Look right. Look left. Half the people sitting next to you won’t finish this class.” That kind of change is inevitable in these types of takeovers in the corporate world. And I had a feeling Levy might not be the guy cut out for the corporate structure.

These things happen, I guess. We’re bummed. But thanks for all the great work over the years (Grim Donut, Downcountry, all of it!), and best of luck out there!

@sino428: A lot of what he said in the podcast makes me think he genuinely is just ready to move on. I’ve been there, and a lot of what he said is eerily familiar to what I’ve been through in the past. (Including the UFO encounter, but that’s a different story).

Take note Syndicate/SC. THIS is how you do a send off, for someone who's been among your most influential people, for the better part of the last two decades.

The writing's been on the wall for some time. But I'm honestly bummed that you're leaving @mikelevy, but I'm sure all of us here, wish you the best of luck ☺️

It may be recency bias speaking here, but my favorite Levy moment is when Yoann Barelli gave him the news of his blistering lap time on the Grim Donut 2. So much childlike excitement (“Holy S***!”) I couldn’t stop smiling. You’ll be missed, Levy.

Good to hear from you Mike. While I've gotten used to your absence, now that it's official it's a hard pill. Been following what you have to say for over a decade at this point. Happy trails!

@brianpark might be cool to have a vote on our favourite Levy article and vid.
3 if my favs:
(1) Levy and Gee Atherton riding the Whistler bike park. Great show case of Gee's skill and Levy's unique riding style at the end.
youtu.be/nCxBeoE8EXY?si=QWC4cq8PhwgqBknM

(2) The Grim Donut vid with Yoann Barelli. Was always hoping to see Levy and Yoann do another vid.
youtu.be/-5cVPy2NbL4?si=JQiAB5cx8LUdW0MF

(3) Nino Schurter makes a tiny pile of rocks to sabotage Levy's climb, and it works beautifully.

@mikelevy you have always been someone I looked up to. One of the only reporters who loved this sport but, never took it too seriously. You perfected being a professional amateur, you wrote amazing articles, hosted rad video and even taught us about aliens. It is a sad day to see you leave, say hi to E.T. for me.

I'm going to miss the Mike v Mike. The opposing opinions, personalities, and perspectives you two had were fantastic. So, thanks for the good times, Levy. On to the next chapter...
  • 7 0
This is heartbreaking. I'm hardly on this site anymore and I never laugh watching the videos over the last couple of months, and there used to be laughs in every video PB produced. It's the end of an era. Like Freestylin' going away and leaving us with just BMX Plus. In the footsteps of Andy Jenkins and Zap, Levy is legend and the lack of a free thinking contrarian (not just an opinionated but wholly conventional curmudgeon) will leave a noticeable void in our culture. Happy Trails, Levy - I'll be listening for your next bad idea.

Mike, Mike & Brian. The first podcast I Followed. You were a must listen for me. Your chemistry, insight and banter was always entertaining and kept me coming back. Whenever I heard all 3 of your voices I knew I had something I could listen to for its entirety.

Levy thank you. You thoroughly entertained me for years. Every video or podcast you were in was a must watch/listen. Not saying every one was perfect (F1 ughh), but you helped make them worth my investment (time). Best wishes on your future and you wake up daily looking forward to the day…. and selfishly I hope that future somehow incorporates you entertaining the masses again.

PB. This was the first episode in months I have listened to from start to finish. I hope you can get there again.

Levy taught me everything I know about mountain bikes. I got a late start and field tests gave way to the podcast... hell, I even learned my letters to read his articles. Thanks Mike, my bike and my life are better for you. Fairwell, we knew thee possibly too well.

Good for Mike. Sometimes ya gotta move on if ya wanna move up, ya know? But mannnnn..., I hope this won't create a big change in Pinkbike's "mood". Remember the old Motorcyclist magazine when Nick Ienatch & Mitch Boehm were making the waves? It was so light, irreverent & FUN!! Neither of those guys took themselves or their toys to seriously. And their journalism reflected the fun that motorbikes can be. Then they moved on, and the mag just fell on it's face. Total head plant. Mike has been for me, like Nick & Mitch were to M/C mag. Making it fun & a little irreverent. Just my style. To bring the smile. I don't do podcasts - but will be anxious to hear about Mike's new destinations & new opportunities. GO MAN GO!! Hope to see you again soon.

Helping Tyler package hundreds of PB calendars to mail out when he was working alone at PB HQ. Dude was doing everything there! Thanks for the the ride down memory lane Levy. Was always cool running into you on the trails testing some new bike or gadget.

I tried hard to cheers you with my best thigh-catch on top-tube near-bail while bobbling an under-biked decent skidding over roots on Transition’s Spur. To top it off in celebration I tried to drink to you by washing down a pink-frosted sprinkle-clad glistener of a donut with a White Pineapple Monster. While jittering back to the lot I shed an inner-mind tear staring at my van, for one shining moment I stared up into a partially cloud-laden sky hoping for a chrome glimmer of a UFO dropping down a BMC gravel bike, Hans Dampf’s mounted impossibly on front and back. I grab the bike in both hands, lift gently to attach the steed via SeaSucker grasp to the steep trunk angle of a teal blue Mini.
Poof, the vision is gone….and so are you. But hopefully not forever. Please check in from time to time.

Super helpful listen given the timing of the current industry fallout. Really great to hear such a positive forward thinking perspective and reminder that this industry no matter what side you work in takes a lot out of the people who work in it. Often underpaid under appreciated and worked to the point of burnout in risk of loosing the passion that brought them into the fold in the first place. It's about the people at the end of the day, products come and go, companies get purchased and stripped bare but there is always something else out there, even if other worldly. Thanks Levy!
  • 4 0
Dang. I guess people will forever be asking where Levy is. F1 aside I always enjoyed Levy's content. He is a good egg and brought a different perspective to PB that I really appreciated.
  • 3 0
Levy's Hellement is probably my favourite bike check of all time. Peak downcountry stupidity.

I also loved the opinion piece where he argued that the Ripley OG (69* HA & 406 reach) is better than the Ripley LS (67.5* HA & 428 reach) because the LS is too long to be fun. www.pinkbike.com/news/ibis-ripley-vs-ibis-ripley-ls-opinion-2016.html

Long live Levy!

@mikelevy ! It's been a while we don't talk about F1 and bikes.. I perfectly remember those first 2 riding shots of you as I was close when those happened... Even RC chose one of those Sterling Lorence's Trek's Copper Canyon Remedy launch pics and put me on MBA cover for March 2008 issue.. awesome times... also with Cam McRae and the rest of media crew those glorious days.. and we were not ever aware of how much fun we had together back then!!! ahhh... life goes by tooooo quickly... it's even unreal.. Hey.. all the best mate and for sure we'll talk soon Mr. DownCountry !!!! Best regards from your buddy from Spain... Wink

Best of luck in whatever you, and thank you for the good times......

Forever gona remember Levy pulling me and my Marlboro painted bike aside at whismas for a shoot, then getting chatting about his mini ( of which I had dreamt of owning a vtec mini since I had my first mini almost 20 years ago) and subsequently buying it off him, literally making a dream a reality haha!

A lot of people don’t know this but Levy was once an understudy for the California Raisins. It didn’t pan out and I eventually met him working the drive through at Dairy Queen. Cool guy. Gods speed. Can you ride a tandem bike alone? Into the sunset. The Mike I know is probably sitting on some hill top, suckin on push up while pondering life’s mysteries. I wish you all the best sir.

I'm gonna miss the impossible climbs, and Levy in short shorts reviewing bikes with Alicia in Arizona, and the endless repartee with Kaz. Learned a ton in the podcast about PB's colourful history - here in the Wack no less! Godspeed Mike - we'll be looking for ya on the trails.

Crazy Copper Canyon trip, I was one of the guides helping on this demo trip for the new Trek Remedy. So many memories. Funny, I work for Trek now.  Cheers mate, you are a very engaging bloke and could have a great career in the media if that's what you want. I loved watching the field tests on YouTube whilst drinking a post-ride coffee and devouring a donut or 3. My favourite is you and Kaz reviewing the 2021 (?) Kona Honzo (which I own) .... "Basically it's a aluminium hardtail mountain bike, go out and ride the f***kin thing!"

@mikelevy that first time we met maybe 20 years ago at Interbike in Vegas and Pinkbike welcomed me into your room and home was a camp bed for 5 days.

You were too young to party so whilst Karl, Radek, Tyler and myself went out, you snd Jordan stayed in.
I think the room got robbed by hookers, wallets and cash.
Those were the days dude! Enjoy and if you’re in the UK, we have a little party going on in August, the Malverns Classic, come and have fun dude!

Every ride with Mike is exactly as depicted. He will yell at you constantly and throw logs into your wheels at many points on the trail.

I won’t pretend to know Mike, but it seems like one of the big reasons for his success is that he was never afraid to be himself. We have appreciated his willingness to be wrong about things, stir the pot, make bad jokes, and everything else over the years. I remember being a grom 15ish years ago, watching Mike on tech Tuesday, being so full of stoke for the sport. The cool thing is that hopefully with this decision, he seems to be sticking with the trend, in doing what feels right and following his own path. Best of luck to ya Mike, see ya on the trails!

Just now diving into this podcast but my first reaction is that hearing Levy on the podcast was kind of like getting water after being lost in the desert for a few days. Slightly hyperbolic but he was missed by many.

The only thing missing from Mike's legacy is an interview with his buddy Wayne, who we are not sure exists…

It is loud and clear that Levy is just done with all of the ins and outs of online media so is there any chance Levy will guest-host the podcast here and there? A "five minutes of Mike" segment here & there... weekly Levy comment trolling maybe? Somehring?

i'm just being selfish – Levy defined PB and the podcast for me and a lot of people I know so it would just be cool to hear from him on the podcast every now and then but I realize thats peob not how things work...

I haven't heard in the pod yet where he's going after PB but best of luck to you @mikelevy - hopefully you can pop in on pot here and there with some funny shit, and thanks again for all of the years of laughs & input.

You have had an outsized influence on so many of us...

as a 37yrs+ XC Rider (eat sleep shit MTB) I can honestly say that I have not been Entertained more by another Online Personality; (SarahN'Tuned, comes a close 2nd) To say that "You Will Be Missed" is a HUGE understatement! At first, I didn't like you, but I loved the way you and Kaz presented the stories, and then I realized that, I can really relate to you. people are ok, sometimes, but I typically ride Hard & alone 99% of the time. And I'm currently rocking a Double Down Country Bike here in Blue Mnt. ON; a 120mm Rear, 150mm Front with 2.5" rubber. Best of Luck to you in your future endeavors Mike! I hope to hear more from you in the future, if you choose to resurface. Live Long & Prosper

The numbers of comments and number of responses to that poll, say just how much Levy has contributed to PinkBike and the mountain bike world. Enjoy your time, you're doing it right!

I think he's going to pull a Tom Delonge and leave the band for a bit, search for aliens, I have a couple side projects, then come back after a bunch of years for more good times.

This would be an ideal timeline.
