PRESS RELEASE: ERGON

Every detail of the GDH Team - shape, density, texture, rubber - has been developed to provide more control and better grip. Each zone of the GDH Team is tailored to the requirements of World Cup DH use and offers maximum hand relief. From the very first touch, you’ll feel the locked-in feeling, which allows the rider to become one with their bike and thus conveys precision, safety and control. The grip with its extra soft GravityControl Rubber compound is Made in Germany and SGS certified.

The GDH Team manages the balancing act of offering the rider maximum control and optimum damping to stave off fatigue, even on the roughest of runs. The silhouette of the GDH Team follows the contours of a rider’s hand in an aggressive riding position and accounts for the gripping forces endured during a downhill race, while the grip is also teeming with ergonomic features and sport-specific details.

Multidirectional cushioning

On the top of the grip, multi-directional texture blocks provide progressive cushioning, resulting in an unrivaled amount of control. The interlocking texture design prevents it from collapsing under pressure, enabling a progressive cushioning that is pleasantly soft at first without giving way under heavier impacts and G-outs. The asymmetrical design also provides additional relief with more rubber on the top of the grip.

Finger boxes for maximum grip

The perfectly pronounced finger grip zone on the underside of the grip with four individual finger boxes and pronounced ridges running parallel to the handlebar creates that “locked-in” feeling and ensures optimum handling, even during the fastest maneuvers.

Pronounced inner and outer stops

The outer stop of the GDH Team, ergonomically integrated into the end of the grip, generates a slight counter-pressure even in the constantly changing conditions of gravity use. The inner stop is a 2/3rds flange that helps as an intuitive orientation aid for the rider and is designed for an unincumbered operation of the shift and brake levers.

Better damping and more grip thanks to extra-soft grip rubber

The GravityControl rubber compound of the GDH Team is the softest variant used by Ergon - for the best compression damping and constant contact between rider and grip. This specially formulated compound is optimized for the highest performance race-day use.

Developed with the top stars of the downhill scene

Over its premier season the GDH Team enjoyed some World Series-level successes. Four-time DH World Champion and World Cup overall winner Valentina Höll, eight-time Australian champion Troy Brosnan, and three-time DH world champion Fabien Barel contributed countless hours of testing and feedback to help develop the GDH Team. Ergon’s team of ergonomics experts visited the DH experts several times at their home tracks in order to create an optimal test environment in intensive downhill sessions and to get direct, honest feedback. This was the only way to tease out the decisive nuances that have made the GDH what it is today - a World Champion grip!

"I've been dreaming of a grip like the GDH," enthuses Troy Brosnan. "It works perfectly in both dry and wet conditions. Together with Ergon, we have succeeded in developing what I believe is currently the best downhill grip on the market with second-to-none comfort."

The results speak for themselves: together with Valentina Höll, the GDH Team became UCI World Champion, UCI World Cup overall winner and Austrian national champion in the elite women's DH this year. GDH Team was also along for the win with UCI Junior Men Downhill World Champ Henri Kiefer. Finally, GDH Team accompanied Fabien Barel to overall victory in the E-Enduro World Cup throughout the season.

Looks like an ergon flavored ODI elite pro
  • 14 0
They had to copy ODI’s grip. If you look closely at many of their “sponsored” riders bikes they all were running Elite Pro’s and Reflex grips with the ODI logo blanked out.
  • 1 0
 Kinda eh
  • 3 1
@J26z: There's a bit of camouflaging but essentially the same concept. Curious what the rubber is like. Last pair of Ergons I had did a lot of rubbing off on to my bare hands, went back to ODI's.
  • 3 0
Similar concept, but this looks WAY more refined. More room for the thumb, no pronounced corners on the waffles, broader support under the palm. Not to mention, some of the biggest differences between grips come down to rubber compound and rubber thickness (or how minimal the plastic structure underneath can be made).
  • 1 0
 yeah

The Elite Pro has one important advantage over the Ergon: It’s available in colours other than black!

These look cool but I wish they came in >1 size/thickness. I wish that about a lot of grips, that there was more recognition that people's hands come in very different sizes and the thickness of a grip can really impact the feel on a handlebar.
  • 2 0
This. Even SQLab, the other big bike ergo guys, don't make a large or XL version of their MTB grip - I run a medium on my knolly, but it's ust not big enough for my stupid bear paws.
  • 8 0
I agree, but just vote with your wallet and buy thicker grips like Deity Supracush, PNW Loam XL, Sensus Meaty Paws, etc
  • 5 1
@mkul7r4: Complaining is foreplay for a lot of folks
  • 1 0
 What is the thickness?
  • 1 1
@Glenngineer: I need XXL Gloves and really like the Ergon Fats - tried quite a few others and they are my favorite. The Ourys are pretty good second for big hands
  • 2 0
 @Glenngineer:
ALL grips need to come in different sizes!

The “bloated” profile of these Ergon’s is dead on the money for my hands, but I won’t spend money on “one size fits all”
In my MX days, I cured arm pump by doubling up my grips by gluing a throttle side grip over the installed grips. Changed everything.

 I see a B,ergoning market
  • 7 0
I tried Ergon, didnt jive with me. Been riding Deity Supracush but realized they were too thick, started having all these weird hand cramps and arm pump. Changed to Sensus Swayze, my god what a game changer. Best grips on planet earth!
  • 4 0
I used to use ergon DH grips and went through multiple consecutive pairs. Was having some hand numbness so bought a pair of push-on swayzes this summer. I remember when the novelty of lockon grips happened but forgot how good the soft+thin combination provided by push on grips is. Won't be going back to lock-ons again any time soon.
  • 2 0
 > they were too thick, started having all these weird hand cramps and arm pump

Thank you for this. I wear XXL gloves and have the same issues with most of the fat grips on the market. Replace with thinner grips and the pain goes away. For me it seems harder to ride with a loose grip on the bars when your grip diameter is so large.

But I recognize that I'm in the minority here, I swear there are dozens of us with this problem.
  • 1 0
Try the Ergon GFR grip...best of both worlds IMO
  • 9 0
Great, how big are they? It’s not like that’s THE most important measurement or anything….
  • 22 2
It doesn't matter. They're minimum where it matters and maximum where you want it. They are ultimate and fast. Pro racer dream grip maximum special.
  • 6 1
@pinkbert: I think they should have had you do the marketing for these grips, I no longer need to know what the diameter is, take my hard earned 39.95$
  • 4 0
@Maxwrbike: for a company that prides itself on ergonomics I'm surprised their is no info on the diameter.
  • 1 0
And the link goes to an empty page. Awesome work Ergon PR!
  • 1 0
Ridiculous oversight honestly. Give me the damn specs. Everything. Min and max diameter, length, weight, durometer.
  • 18 1
Hey ya'll, just THAT PR Guy dropping in to acknowledge our blunder.
While the GDH Team does vary a bit in size from the middle (where it's a bit thicker / more padded) to the ends, it's on average a 31mm and feels like a 31mm grip. I'll ask the PB to include that in the bullets.

Additionally, we've fixed the URL issue, so it does go to the site now. Thanks, @dolface.

Let me know if you have any other questions, or if you have a flaming bag of poo you'd like to drop off for someone this holiday season, I'll send over @mikelevy's address.

 @ergonbike: don't be a beleidigte Leberwurscht, please.
  • 1 0
@pinkbert: Laterally stiff and vertically compliant.
  • 5 0
I’m finding that finger boxes, cutouts, grooves, etc never line up for me and are more of a distraction than feeling “locked in”. Repeat cycle of buying grips that felt amazing at the shop then throwing my old half nelson’s or getta’s back on.
  • 5 0
The real question is, when are companies gonna offer a custom grip option where you can have them make a grip to the would of your hand. They do this for sex toys.... Why not grips?
  • 1 0
There was something like that a few years ago. Apparently it didn't work that well and I'm not sure if they're still around
  • 5 0
Grip companies should all sell replacement grips without the collar at a reduced cost like DMR does with their "Deathdrips refill" product: www.dmrbikes.com/Catalogue/Grips/DeathGrip/DeathGrip-Refill
  • 1 0
 truth
  • 1 0
ODI used to do that with the two collar versions of the Rogue and Ruffian. Pretty cool and should be standard for all grips.
  • 4 0
Looks like the OneUp Thick Grip, a grip I just couldn't get along with due to the elevated "ridges" never lining up properly.
  • 4 0
Would love to see more grip companies selling JUST the grip/rubber part so we can all recycle the metal clamp. I have SO MANY old clamps sitting in a box, such a waste.
  • 1 0
The first step would be for manufacturers to standardize on the same clamp to grip interface. A lot of brands are using the same style, but there are some oddballs such as ODI and Ergon.
  • 1 0
Not sure what Ergon grips I have, but I love that the end is ramped. It works perfectly with the way my hands approach the grips yet I feel the ramped shape makes the occasional tree-scrape a bit smoother and less catastrophic.
  • 1 0
I'm lucky enough to have gotten a pair of these last week. Not ridden yet cause there's a lot of deep soft snow here. The rubber feels soft, thick, and the shape fits nicely in the hand thanks to the raised top and the "half-waffle". Nice metal single lock-on should provide an easy install.

Been running a lot of different grips (in search of something that'd glue my hands to the handlebars effortlessly) and these are promising: definitely softer than Ergon GE1 or the half-waffle RevGrips. Similar design to ODI elite pro, though from memory (can't find them on the shelf...) a little softer to the touch and maybe a hair thicker overall. Not as "plush" as ODI longnecks. Not as sticky but thicker than Renthal half-waffle ultra-tacky or aramid push on moto grips. A touch softer and thicker rubber than RevGrips RG5. Also thicker and softer rubber than RaceFace Getta grips.

Now, how they feel on the kitchen table sure will be different than how they feel at the end of a long chunky run, time will tell
  • 6 6
I used a lot of grips throughout the years. Ergon makes the most comfortable grips period. My only suggestion would be to make more robust bar ends. Absolutely all MTB grips should have bar ends covering the whole grip. It is absolutely vital for people smashing the handlebar against the ground often. So the product is very good but not perfect.
  • 2 0
Cant say I agree. Nothing towards ergon. But Renthal slip on Aramid grips are amazing for those who ride gloveless or with. The vibrations are none. The wear feel is perfect. They last a decade. Love em.
  • 5 0
Can not agree. Used a lot of different Ergon grips and they all fell good until I tried the Odi Elite Pro. Odis are so much better.
  • 2 0
If you'd cover the whole outside diameter of the Grip with an Endplug all the Pro racers would take the Grip of their Bikes cause it results in your Hand touching hard Plastic (endplug) all the time.
It is a calculated sacrifise for Performance.
  • 1 0
@chillrider199: renthal bar end plugs are trash though...unless they've changed them since I got mine
  • 1 0
@Braench: ODI and FUNN have figured out how to have integrated "endcaps" without feeling hard plastic at the end of the grip. At least with the Reflex from ODI and Holeshot from FUNN. Nice soft grip material at the end and no losing plugs.
  • 2 0
@Tambo: I had one set where they never stayed place. Hands always displaced them. Then another set in the last year and the wedge that applies pressure inside was a lot more capable of applying enough pressure that they stayed. Buuuut Im planning to next time just use a Sensus bar plug. Theyre solid.
  • 3 0
I run ergons, I replaced the standard plastic bar end plug with a muc off tubeless plug kit, they fit perfectly into the recess but still stick out 2mm to actually protect the grip with aluminium.
  • 2 0
I have had the same problem with Ergon grips. The included plastic end plugs are garbage and get knocked out far too easily. I am not buying another Ergon grip until they close off the end of the grip and overmold it with rubber.
  • 1 0
Imagine if you try some push on grips without any plastic between the rubber and the handlebar, now that would be comfortable. Seriously though, I can't ride anything else now, plus they are 4x cheaper than these and there's no plastic that can break and make the whole grip feel like it's unbolted even if it's not (it happened when I had some Ergon grips a few years ago, that was really annoying).
  • 2 0
@nnowak: over moulded ends are terrible if you ask me. Can't run anything in your bar, and it makes it harder to get the second one on due to air pressure. Just get some aftermarket aluminium bar plugs, no included plastic ones are ever that good.
  • 4 0
Odi elite pro my favourite type to grip it and rip it.
  • 1 0
So when is some going to mention the Burgtec Minnar grips?? They are perfect, no hard end plug, work well in the wet, last long enough and if you get the super soft your life just becomes must better! Try em! Do it!
  • 1 0
Too fat too squishy & the outer end twists ..
  • 2 0
I run ESI chunky with ODI end plugs. The ODI plugs protect the ends of the ESI grips so they have a better chance of not getting ripped during a crash.
  • 1 0
Same but with Hope Grip Doctors. A little chunky (Ha!) but the grips last so much longer
  • 1 0
One thing I don't like is that the outer edge isn't flat and angle like in the normal Ergon angled grips. That helps a lot with hitting trees and them not catching but sliding.
  • 2 0
I've gotta be honest. I've never really liked ergon grips. They make some great saddles, tho.
  • 2 1
Because of the annoying ass marketing lingo aimed at a 13yo and many suggestions in the comments, I shall try a new brand next season after using ergon for years.
  • 3 0
Still love my GD1 Evo Factory grips. Best rubber out there!
  • 3 0
40 bucks for a grip, get a grip!
  • 2 1
ODI will be the leading grip for a very long time. They've been making great stuff since forever ago. Any other grip will just be a copy.
  • 1 0
They also wear very quickly. Try PNW, i'm loving mine since the switch!
  • 1 0
@Lousicle yea I try new grips but keep coming back to longnecks, which is basically a 40 year old design.
  • 2 1
Ergon DH grips are so comfortable for me that I'd still put them on a weight weenie XC bike where they weight the same as the carbon bars they're mounted on.
  • 1 0
I wish grip manufacturers would start listing grip length. After using Chromag Clutch grips I can't go back to narrow grips.
  • 2 0
does this wear out half a year and cost at least 30€?
  • 2 0
Looks good, I hope it will come in the Fat option as well
  • 1 0
At £35 how long do these last? If you have to change these as often as say I do Deathgrips it could cost £100's a year.
  • 1 0
Ergon grips last in general last very long. GA3 have 7000km on my commuter and show no wear. GE1 evo factory are on my mtb since I build it 18 months ago and they are worn at the thumb area mostly. Deathgrips lasted 6-8 months for me.

Bike Yoke Grippy Grips are amazing. I’ve rode them all. They get better with age.
  • 1 0
I’ve wanted to try them. How are they when wet? Or without gloves?
  • 1 0
@WalrusRider: definitely sticky without gloves. Good in wet conditions as well. Love the rubber flange that extends over the inside metal clamp.

Team grips were so pandemic bike boom. I prefer Privateer grips
