Newmen Phase 30 MTB Carbon Wheel Series

PRESS RELEASE: Newmen

Developed in the Allgäu Alps, ridden around the world: Driven by our passion for new innovation Newmen Components launches with Phase 30 and Beskar 30 two brand new wheelset families for mountain bikers. In order to achieve the best possible weight and strenght for all aspects of mountain biking we have optimized our wheel configurations for different disciplines by using different weight variants of our rims for front and rear wheels. The spoke selection is optimized for front/rear and each discipline as well - even down to different spoke counts. So every mountain biker can find an optimized wheel configuration in our new Phase 30 and Beskar 30 lineup.

Newmen Beskar 30 Base MTB Wheel
Optimized wheel configurations for every discipline: The Beskar 30 Base you can use on a trail bike on the rear or as an enduro front wheel.

In Your Phase: High-End MTB Carbon Wheels

With the new Phase 30 series, wheel specialist Newmen Components is heralding a new era in MTB carbon wheels. Whether for cross-country racing, trail biking or rough enduro trails, every mountain biker will find a suitable, stable carbon wheelset at a fair price in the Phase 30 range. The basis for the high-end carbon wheels is a further development of the proven, successful Advanced SL rim with improved durability and weight.

Newmen Phase 30 Base MTB Carbon Wheel
The Phase 30 Base wheel is stable enough as a trailbike rear wheel or front in Enduro bikes.

Rims and spokes: Perfectly matched for every Phase 30 wheelset

As strong as necessary, as light as possible: Depending on the discipline, three different hookless carbon rims are used in the Newmen Phase 30 series - all with an internal width of 30 millimeters. They are called Light, Base and Strong. Thanks to the weight-optimized Phase Light rim on the front and rear, the cross-country wheels, which have already been tested at the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, weigh only 1350 grams. In the Phase 30 Trail version, the more robust Base rim on the rear wheel provides more stability for adventures in the mountains. Furthermore Newmen has developed the Phase 30 Strong rims for enduro use and a maximum system weight of 180 kg, which will not shy away from enduro races and bike parks. Compared to the previous version, it retains its excellent impact resistance but is 50 grams lighter.

But the new carbon rims are only one component of the new Newmen Phase 30 mtb wheels. The thickness of the spokes has also been optimized for each area of use and for both front and rear wheels. Combined with the lightweight and extremely reliable FADE MTB hubs, the Phase 30 series offers mountain bikers the most stable carbon wheels we have ever built at NEWMEN. So nothing stands in the way of using it on an eMTB.

Gourmet Metal: Beskar High-End MTB Alloy Wheels

Newmen Beskar 30 MTB Wheelset Family

An uncompromisingly light wheel at a fair price that you can rely on in every situation: With the new Beskar 30 series, Newmen raises the bar for high-quality aluminum wheels by one tire width. Whether as a parts accelerator for cross-country racing bikes, as a tuning upgrade for trail bikes to enduro bikes or nearly indestructible for downhill use: almost every (e-)mountain biker will find a first-class aluminum wheel at a reasonable price in the Newmen Beskar 30 family.

Newmen Beskar 30 Base
The new Beskar 30 Base aluminum rim achieves the best impact resistance values in its weight class on the test bench - both in comparison to its predecessor and the competition.

Downhill confidence with more stable rear wheels

The basis are four new aluminum rims developed in the Allgäu with maximum dent resistance and minimum weight. Depending on the specific riding demands, the Beskar rims – from Light to DH – are combined with the proven, lightweight FADE MTB hub on the front and rear wheels. For more stiffness and traction in rough terrain, Beskar's Enduro and Downhill versions not only increase the number of spokes, but also their thickness.

All five new Newmen high-end aluminum wheelsets have one thing in common: the 30 millimeter wide aluminum rims with their flat profile achieve the best impact resistance values in their weight class on the test bench – compared to both their predecessors and the competition. That's why the sturdy Beskar 30 wheels with their welded aluminum rims easily meet the requirements of e-mountain bikes - from light eMTBs to enduro eMTBs.

 I was gonna say!

 Why, I don't get it?
  • 9 0
 @skiboot1: I believe chromag has been selling a wheel set called Phase 30 for a few years now.
  • 3 1
 @KennyWatson: lol that's not good
  • 9 0
 @KennyWatson: I have them. pretty great rims.
  • 4 0
 @jesse-effing-edwards: same.... insane value.
  • 5 0
 @jesse-effing-edwards: ditto. Chromag Phase30 are an excellent front rim and the BA30 is bombproof outback. They and the Spank 350/359 combo are my favorite alloy rims.

 soon as i saw that headline i was like 'hey don't i already have a Phase 30 rim'

 Looks like Riser Holdings Ltd only has two current trademarks. The word CHROMAG and the bear design. So fair game on releasing a bike wheel in Canada with the name Phase 30.
  • 4 0
 @eh-steve: This is what I suspected..... still a poor show considering Chromag's presence in the industry.
  • 1 0
 My thoughts as well. I imagine they just missed the existence of chromag phase in their research? Not that I care about trademarks but it feels like a mistake.

 Came here to say this. THE NAME IS ALREADY TAKEN!!
  • 3 0
 "Hello, Newmen..."
  • 4 0
 @MrDuck: they are a German company and are huge in Europe but not really at all in North America so it’s understandable
  • 1 0
 I have two sets of Chromies Phase 30 hoops and they are tight.
  • 1 0
 @maestroman21: Definitely in poor taste. I'm sure their excuse would be, "Oh we didn't know who Chromag is.."
Of course now if you google Phase 30 wheel you get Newmen as well as Chromag
  • 3 1
 @maestroman21: chromag has very little presence in Europe

 The Beskar should pretty much invincible in order to wear that name. If it can block a lightsaber, then it better be able to stop a rock or twenty from ruining your day.

 The DH rim should be the toughest aluminium rim in existence. A lot more material than any other MTB rim and Newmen rims in general are quite sturdy for their weight.
  • 2 0
 @Ttimer:
No kidding, the DH race is an 800g+ rim
It had better be sturdy for that weight.

 Newmen and this price point has been standard in Europe for years. If you've ordered anything on R2 bike you know what I mean. It's American brands that really can't seem to get with the program

 Excellent wheels for an excellent price - and even good weights? Whats going on here???

 for real, I have two sets of Newmen aluminum wheels (albeit with DT 350 hubs instead of their Fade hubs), and they are flawless
  • 4 0
 I have the SL A.30 wheels and they can take a beating. For the weight, it is awesome. This is the way
  • 3 0
 The press release is primarily about the rims and the hubs are just "lightweight". They could be decent but I'm surprised to see relatively little bragging about the supposedly most durable and expensive part of a wheel. If I were to choose based on this press release (and if the chosen dimensions would fit my bike) I'd go with these rims and lace them to my hub of choice. The rim price is not mentioned but it seems like for this kind of money you could lace them to DT350 or even DT240.
  • 6 2
 They are known for their high quality hubs in germany and europe, on par with DT Swiss.
  • 11 0
 Good hubs, I have them on a Newmen wheelset that sees abuse. Best almost-silent option out there. Only downside is you need a special tool to service them, but it's not that expensive. 32 pt engagement, which is fine for me (I've had higher, don't care). Oh, and you can't buy them in N America, but R2 bike ships them.

Honestly, they're the only mid-priced quiet and reliable hub on the market. I can't overstate how much I despise loud or unreliable hubs (cough, cough, EVERYONE).
  • 2 0
 They seem to lack a lot information on their products. I couldn't find the engagement points of their hubs. Looking up Beskar rims now, I can't seem to find the ERD. Apparently that's not important information for a rim. I did see they tuck the ERD values away in a document under downloads but that hasn't been updated yet.
  • 1 0
 Ah, good to hear these are decent hubs. Makes more sense then and I'll consider them next time I need a hub (provided they're compatible with my bike of course).
  • 2 0
 @vinay: adding +1 to the reviews of the hubs. I blew up a set of Dt Swiss wheels and got a set of the newmen evolutions (same hub). They're fantastic.
  • 8 1
 @spoegel: If these are the current FADE hubs, they might be decent but nowhere near DT Swiss levels of reliability. Given the choice, I’d take Newmen rims laced to DT hubs. Best of both worlds.
  • 6 0
 running 1st and 2nd gen newmen hubs for some years. the original bearings did not last long. otherwise they are fine, easy to rebuild and an affordable lightweight option.

(their alloy rims are fantastic.)
  • 5 1
 @spoegel: Definitely not on par! The customer service is a joke.

I had a an Advanced SL A30 wheelset, one of their most premium set. My back wheel was rattling constantly. I have found out that the bearing housing in the hub was slightly out of tolerance. Instead of offering a new hub they changed the bearing to a non standard size, slightly bigger, which means it's going to be a pain to source it when I will have to change it. I was not the only one as there are a couple of videos and testimonies relating the same hub issue on the internet.

The silver hub also started to get pitted, when I have shown them they directly accused me to clean my bike with agressive product. So I explained I am using WD40 BIKE CLEANER and water, not the degreaser but they said it's the same product and it's not made for bicycles, ok Newmen... So how do you explain my silver DT Swiss hub and the silver Hope components stayed immaculate for years with the same treatment?
  • 2 0
 @Brodybro29:

Haha, i had the "same" story with my hope brakes...

What a mess with the swiss distributor...
The cause of the issue was, he said that, that i wash my bike with muc-off...
Warranty denied...

But there was a first badge of the brakes, they had scratches in the lever piston. Mine had exactly the same scratches.

And @hopetech didn't request my mails any more...
  • 2 1
 @Hamburgi: Wow. They washed a whole batch of brakes with Muc-off, huh!
  • 1 1
 @slovenian6474: wow, u funny huh?
  • 2 0
 @JustinVP: They have 36 POE.
  • 1 0
 Fade hubs have been around for years now pretty high engagement aswell. They probably decided to concentrate on the new rims
  • 1 0
 @briain: Thanks but my point was that it's not on NEWMAN's site.
  • 4 1
 THE NAME IS ALREADY TAKEN BY CHROMAG. As someone in the industry, there's enough PK to deal with already without someone on your team throwing this wrench into the mix. Please, is this copy name due to a passive lack of diligence, or is it due to an active display of malice?

Do better, calm down, be well
  • 2 0
 I can't say I'm that impressed with their alloy enduro rims and gen 2 hubs, nor with their choice of spokes. I had to rebuild both front and rear wheels with new spokes after one year of riding because multiple spokes started snapped inside the the nipples on both wheels. Shortly afterwards the rear rim separated at that seam and not much later the front rim failed around a spoke hole. I used reused the rear hub with a DT rim and it makes a horrible metallic noise when the freehub engages, no matter how frequently I grease it. All the wheel builds we're done by a bike shop. I'm not a hard rider and I only weight 70kgs so I've no idea how this stuff holds up for bigger/faster riders.

 Hello Newmen...or as Jerry Seinfield says, "Hello Newman"
  • 1 0
 This is unfortunate that they are replacing the evolution SL rim series (6069 Al) with the Beskar al rims in my opinion. One of the reasons I love Newmen wheels/rims is because of the hookless design. The flared rims have some of the best flat protection I have ever used of any bicycle rim. Moving to a hooked design just means more pinch flats like DT swiss rims. They will still have the evolution rim series (6061 al) which I have not tried, but the 6069 Al of the evolution SL rims has been bombproof for me.
  • 4 0
 Do they do lifetime crash replacement for the carbon rims?
  • 1 0
 This is the most important question.
  • 1 0
 no...
  • 1 0
 I've had my custom wheelset built this way, lighter rim at the front (wider too) and stronger rim at the rear. I like the idea of mixing and matching wheels to optimise weight and durability.
  • 1 0
 I'm surprised it took this long for a component manufacturer to crib that name.
