Now Taking Applications for Pinkbike’s World Cup DH Race Team with Ben Cathro

Speed tucks required.

Downhill racers are a special breed, and most aren’t just chasing World Cup dreams to get rich. But when we did our State of the Sport survey earlier this year we were shocked at how little support many of the juniors and lower ranked riders are getting today.

In the absence of strong national race programs, it's World Cup DH or bust for many racers. The financial commitment of travelling and competing at that level puts the sport out of reach for many amazing riders.

We want to see a sport where talent can rise, rather than only the most affluent being able to compete. So we’re creating a Pinkbike World Cup DH UCI trade team as an incubator for juniors and riders on the bubble that need support to break through. We tried to make it happen for 2021, but there simply wasn’t enough industry support; coming on board with Outside has made Pinkbike Racing possible for 2022 and beyond.

photo
Serious business.

Coached by Line Guy™ Ben Cathro himself, the team will provide the bike, cover all costs, and pay riders a salary that allows them to focus 100% on racing during the season. And with a multi-part video series we’ll pull back the curtain on pro level racing as we follow the team through the trials, tribulations, successes, failures, and glory of World Cup DH.

For the 2022 season we’ll be selecting two riders (one male, one female). We are already in conversations with several racers we think have great potential, but we’d like to open it up for applications as well. Interested?

FAQ

I’ve never raced before but I’m really fast. Should I apply?
Probably not. We’re looking for racers who have had impressive showings at regional and national events. But your results don't need to be only in DH—if you’re destroying the technical stages in EWS races and want to switch to DH, it’s worth a thought.

Is there an age limit?
No, but in general we’re looking for younger, up-and-coming riders.

What bike will I be riding?
We will announce the team’s sponsors soon. The bikes and equipment will not hold you back.

I’ve got an offer from a brand already, do you want to match it?
Maybe, let’s talk, but the idea here is to help riders who don’t have as much support.

Is Cathro going to misdirect everyone in his course previews now to give his team the advantage?
Maybe.

How much are you offering?
The opportunity offers more than just the money, but our financial support will be significantly above typical rates at your level.

Ben and the Pinkbike team will be reviewing the applications, but please note that depending on the volume of applications we may not be able to get back to everyone personally.

The real question is - will this be for free, or with Ourside+ subscription Smile
Anyway, a great idea.

Well done Outside! After all the "oh no, PB has been pulled on board the corporate Death-Star" angst, I'm pretty impressed that the first real change I see is Outside stepping up to invest in the beating heart of the sport.

  • 5 1
Exactly. Been waiting for this announcement since the acquisition. So cool!
  • 38 0
Great to see hey. Stoked to see how this develops Smile
  • 5 0
Got a feeling it will be subscription money that makes this possible if you want to see much of the content around the team. I hope to be proven wrong. Either way, stoked for Cathro and the chosen riders
  • 9 4
It’s not outside’s money. It’s our money. That’s the only source of cash they have
  • 4 0
 @ben-cathro:
I’m as chuffed for you Ben as the chosen riders. Good work!
  • 14 0
@CM999: Hmmm... but it's also not our money as we got it from somewhere else too... hmmm.. makes me question where money comes from?
Anyway... watch out.. your boss might come knock on your door to ask his bikes, car and house back...
  • 3 0
@CM999: Im pretty sure that advertising generates more $ than subscriptions, though I have no evidence to back this up. Smile They point Iwas trying to make is that this team is something PB has been wanting to do for a while and it will probably generate some of the best content on the site. The cynic in me thinks that new, compelling content will end up behind the paywall, but I will be thrilled to be proven wrong.
  • 1 1
@ben-cathro: it would be great to have a girl that you can mentor…
  • 1 0
@CM999: so where do you think the budget for any team comes from? i dont think canyon/trek or specialized have magic money trees to fund teams, its from the money consumers spend on their products.

I’ve never raced before but I’m really fast. Should I apply?
- does Strava count?

Is there an age limit?
- www.eeoc.gov/statutes/age-discrimination-employment-act-1967... *cough*

What bike will I be riding?
"The bikes and equipment will not hold you back." In my career, it's always been the equipment. Prove me wrong.

How much are you offering?
Not taking anything less than Gwin-money.

Thanks, Incognito Robin. I won't let you down.
  • 51 0
Do the winners have to race on the Grim Donut? And do you offer health insurance?
  • 216 1
Racing the Grim Donut wouldn't be fair to all the other racers.
  • 45 0
The World Cup isn’t ready yet.
  • 5 0
@ben-cathro: This guy just goes from strength to strength amiright.

This is going to be awesome, hope we see Ben racing too.
  • 9 0
@brianpark: It's an EWS bike anyway. I'm holding out hope that a Grim Danish DH is still coming.
  • 2 1
@brianpark: I don't think it would be fair on the insurers
  • 2 1
I think the pertinent question about racing the grim donut is if they offer life insurance.
  • 3 0

Just don't get on his bad side or you'll get the belt... drive e-bike content no one wants.
  • 1 0
Until you need a subscription to watch this content... I hope not... but somethings gotta be coming down the pipe. I could definitely see higher end content like this, that costs them a lot of cash to fund, to be behind a paywall. Compelling enough to get a ton of subscriptions... and maybe not do-able without a ton of subscriptions....
  • 40 1
 F*ck yea pinkbike! Ah hmmm… outside…

Can’t ride for shit, and I’m an embarrassment at parties- where do I sign
  • 1 0
We would make a great team lol.
  • 7 2
So ever since this was brought up when the acquisition was announced, I've been a bit skeptical. Pinkbike is one of the largest MTB news organizations and how do they keep their impartiality when getting involved in racing at a high level? I know its probably not a ton of money, but Pinkbike is now taking money from certain companies and not others with these sponsorships. Probably in the hopes of more and better coverage. I do applaud the effort to raise compensation for racers! And am always stoked to see more competition in DH!
  • 3 0
Well Pinkbike is a new magazine as you stated . Them having a race team is no more impartial then then selling advertising space or there staff getting free bikes from company’s to “test” . Great thing about racing is the results do the talking . They can’t or won’t be able to ignore the facts if they’re team doesn’t do well on race day.
  • 5 0
Dirt Magazine used to have a WC DH team for years too. I don't think it affected their coverage of the races. I think there have been British magazines before Dirt who have been doing this too.
  • 2 0
Do you share the same concern with orbea sponsoring pinkbikes academy?

I had to go back and look but they did have an orbea in the 2020 field test.
  • 6 0
The thing that makes this even awesomer than awesome is that Ben is in a leadership role. His "How to" series shows he's a thinker and communicator.
  • 7 0
does "younger, up-and-coming riders." mean 15
  • 3 0
that's a good point. PB didn't specify how many slots exist. and if they are mostly interested in juniors or mostly interested in elites. guess the applications that come in will make that more clear to them. i would hope they'd mix it up as much as possible. 1 elite male, 1 elite female, 1 junior male, 1 junior female. get those apps in kids!
  • 8 0
since you have to be 17 or older to race in the World Cup prolly not
  • 3 0
@lepigpen: they do specify. or have updated the article since you read it
  • 3 0
@samtaylor1983: Oh, I see. I have a feeling this program would be 18+ unless they got an insane junior applicant. Just for convenience of legal reasons/travel/etc. I wonder if they'll even go with public applicants over the promising leads pre-existing in the industry.

All I know is it will be infinitely better than PBacademy
  • 1 0

My money would be on Pivot considering they're probably ready to mass produce Grim Donuts
  • 3 1
They've got a fleet of Grim Donuts ready for action
  • 5 0
@bananowy: Pivot may be ready for that but I don't think the world is ready for an armada of Grim Donuts storming the hills
  • 5 0
@sjma: i've just imagined Gee Atherton down the hill on a Grim Donut. Speed would be warping time and the hill would be slashed, tires would be fiery screaming for their rubber. There is a reason their bikes aren't that progressive!
  • 1 0
 @Notmeatall:

I personally used to race and my times where a steady 15 sec behind gwin when he was top guy it always felt like if i had real support i could have been up there .....i beleive the money it def holds alot of privateers back i was working 60hr weeks riding a lawn mower to afford racing ... these guys bike all day everyday
  • 4 1
I look forward seeing how this plays out . Hopefully it’s not all white washed and you guys give a actual in-depth perspective of what it takes to even qualify for a World Cup race .
  • 3 0
Awesome. Helping one more woman race on the DH world cup circuit is massive when the field is usually 20-odd people, not all of whom can get to all the races. Looking forward to watching this take shape!
  • 2 0
I miss seeing the DeVinci Wilson on the World Cup circuit. I hope they are your secret sponsor/equipment provider! The High pivot Wilson prototype Dakotah and Jure were running was super sweet and seemed to perform quite well.
  • 4 0
Now all the PB experts can go race at the high level.. but... their "expertness" runs out when they actually get on the bike.
  • 2 0
Well I guess sponsoring two is better than none, but I was initially thinking as I read that the number would be more like 5-10. I foresee another biking reality series in the making watching the development of these Pinkbike sponsored rider's and their professional development.
  • 2 0
They should make all applications public; with a comment section for each. That way they could also gauge the social media potential of every aspiring athlete.

Nah, I’m joking I just wish they would do that so we could all laugh at the old farts with a CAT 2 top 10 in a local race who are signing up like me.

Some of my best results are Strava KOMs - I assume that counts highly in today’s world of “social first”. Also, said KOMs are the result of multiple French lines at my local trails; again double points for me with the selection committee for both being a “line guy” myself and being “French”.

  • 3 1
@brianpark perhaps eventually you could share all the budget and financial details in order for us peasants have a better understanding of how a WC DH team works in terms of budgeting and what it takes at the end of the season to compete at the highest level giving your athletes a proper salary? I think this is an info nobody shares and people outside the close circle of factory teams don't have access to and having it fully disclosed will help both athletes and prospective team owners that want to take the big leap to the WC circuit. Plus a lot of enjoyment to us content bitches.

Hats off because this is an extraordinary project and I wish it will go only better and higher from here. Pinkbike doing the job the brands with the top budgets are not actively doing.
  • 4 0
This is so cool! Huge props to Brian and the team! Can't wait to see what the 2022 season has in store.
  • 7 1
 Get Roger Vieira !!!
  • 3 1
Shouldn’t UCI points be a requirement for a World Cup team? I can’t imagine that low level privateers who aren’t able to already race in WCs will ever make it to a WC event.
  • 1 0
Depends whether UCI makes points a requirement again this season or not Last season all you had to do was be on a UCI registered team which you could create and pay for yourself
  • 1 0
Give that support to Tristan Botteram guys! That guy has a lot of talent and can develop much more with better support when focussing full on the downhill. Now he’s still living in the Netherlands, riding a lot on flat grounds and still took the European IXS downhill title this year! Even in world cup he was twice in top 30 with his 'flat' background I think that says enough with only being 20 or 21 years old!
  • 3 0
I love this idea! Excited to see Team Grim Donut on the podium next season!

Where's all the Outside hater now?
  • 7 1

Maybe it is time for something like the Steve Peat Syndicate again. You buy the bike, you get the kit, coaching, team support etc.

Bunch of turncoats in here, clearly Cathro is an AI Deep Fake generated to make us all slowly fall in love with Outside with his charm and charisma.

Has anyone actually seen Ben in real life?
  • 1 0
Did you not know we are all living in the Matrix, everything is fake?
You can spot him in a crowd, as he if head & shoulders above everyone else!
  • 2 0
@brianpark will both athletes be paid the same?

How long are riders planning on being kept on the team before "graduating" to make room for new up-and-comers?
  • 2 3
PB def putting all (two) eggs in the one basket.
It sounds great buuuuut, what if the team provided bikes, equipment, mechanics, entry, and accom at each round? No salaries, but riders keep their winnings. Maybe they could run 6 or more riders at each round? It would naturally attract the up and comers who could save/raise a few bucks to get to the WC's, knowing they were sorted once there.
More personalities for PB and chances of breakthrough riders for the reality show!
  • 3 0
Why wasn't this next weeks win it wednesday?

  • 1 1
Just to clarify I think the idea is great for PB to have a team and i wish it great success and will be fun watching it. I'm just confused about your "mission statement" intro.
  • 2 0
Awesome! And cool to hear about higher compensation, but why keep it secret? If it’s comparatively good let’s see it
  • 2 0
Can't wait for bad capitalist outside bla bla bla.

  • 3 0
Best news I've heard all week. Kudos for making this happen. AMAZING
  • 1 1
It's pretty damning to the industry that they are unwilling to support new racers. But I guess that makes sense when unless your a top 3 female DH rider you cannot get any support.
  • 1 1
Great job Outside team. I hope there's no frame sponsorship so each rider can choose their own frame. Curious which frame a racer would actually choose and not be locked by sponsorship.

  • 2 0
Is China financing this? or perhaps Taiwan?
  • 1 0
All the people in PB academy will have wished they had applied to this instead.
  • 2 4
Considering Pinkbike has highlighted the meagre pay for the majority of DH racers, are they going to pay them accordingly, considering the risk they take, or is PB just going to contribute to the ridiculous exploitation of DH racers and claim that these people do it for the love of the sport. Spare me. You make money off these people, then pay them appropriately.
  • 1 0

Can I put my money on cathro’s protégé jamie edmondson now. Only as it will allow him to race a full season in Europe.

 Is Jamie his protege?
I think that takes away from how good Jamie is by himself (and he is out there digging trails too).

 @betsie:

My bad. Mixed him up with someone else thought he was part of the old sick skills development squad.

@randomhero101: I think you could be right, somehow I missed Jamie riding for Sick skills. I had a season off so might have been then.
Henry has done pretty good too after being on the team. Ben has a good eye for spotting some good youngsters.
