Onza's New Svelt is Their Fastest Rolling XC Race Tire

Onza Svelt

Following the release of their updated Canis tire, Onza is introducing an even faster rolling tire, the Svelt, for dry conditions. The cross country marathon tire is available only in 29x2.3” width and uses the Medium Compound 60, which is actually made up of two rubber durometers, 45 and 60a.

Onza claims to have improved the rolling resistance by reconfiguring the ramped center knobs and adding "X-shaped" knobs to provide support and control when transitioning over to the shoulder lug.

Onza Svelt Details

• Sizes: 29 x 2.3"
• Colors: black
• Medium Compound 60 dual rubber compound (45/60a)
• XCC Cross Country Casing (60 TPI)
• Black or Skinwall colors
• MSRP:

Similarly to the Canis, the Svelt using the new construction features, like the tubeless ready bead (TLR) and the Cross Country Casing (XCC). The Svelt comes in either black or skinwall colors which weight 820g and 780g. The price for each one of those varies slightly at $69.90 / €64.90 and $74.90 USD / €69.90 EUR.

I like the chart! Need something similar from Maxxis to explain their twenty five different tires.

twenty five? i actually did the math - dhf, dhr and aggressor combined are no less than 88 different tires.

Yeah, but the dimensions should be more the properties than the supposed purpose. Or a combination thereof as hardpack vs mud/loose is a good one. But other than that you may like to have a dimension of protection level, rolling resistance, weight (for a certain rim size), sidewall stability... Of course you can't visualize all these dimensions at once so you'd need several charts. Or a digital tool like CES (tool selection method by Mike Ashby) to choose the two dimensions you want to see. Obviously, for a good comparison between brands you'd have to quantify all those properties, which is near impossible to realize. For instance you can choose a standard tire pressure but what if different tires work best at different pressures? But yeah I'd agree that such a visualization is a great tool to have to make a shortlist of tires that you might fit your purpose.

@vinay: Good point, a simple two dimensional chart just won't work for the dizzying array of Maxxis tires.

We need two additional visualization levels:
3-D chart that adds tire width (requires VR headset to understand)
4-D chart that adds type of casing on top of that (requires theoretical physics PhD to understand)

@jmd07aa: I'm talking about this kind of software, allowing you make 2D graphs of two parameters and they put the stuff in the right spot. If for instance you're looking for the highest stiffness (or technically, Youngs modulus) and the lowest density (for instance because you want to make a low weight product subject to bending), you make such a chart and consider the materials in the corner of the chart that suits you best. Then with that subset, you check them against other properties you think are important (like cost, corrosion resistance etc). As you probably gather from now, this is mostly a material selection method. It is actually based on a book/method by Michael Ashby called "Material Selection for Mechanical Design". Obviously this works for parameters that can be quantified. But he also has a book "Material and Design" together with Kara Johnson where they also integrate parameters that are harder to quantify, though obviously that also means that you might not get these charts from the software. Of course you could always be inspired and make something alike in a spreadsheet and then generate graphs from any two colomns you choose. You decide on a scoring system for these different properties and go by that. Yet obviously, ideally you'd have a professional bike reviewer do that. Someone who actually rides a wide variety of stuff. Not sure who can be bothered though. Pinkbike started doing grouptests a while ago but this is next level. You'd need a more German approach. Maybe enduro-mtb.com/en could be the right people. They do huge grouptests and they like to make tables. Once you have the data, you can indeed feed it in the software. Possibly also in CES as I think you can define your own parameters. Elephant in the room is, I don't think there is a free version. There seems to be a trial for their edupack but of course you don't want to build your own database for something that expires.

820grams is not svelte for an xc race tyre/tire

 Gimme these in 26" !!!

So they can get put on my dirt jumper

agreed. only 1 reliable skinwall tire avaliable

They used to be available in 27.5. I have them on my SS.

XC tires are great, also if your pumptrack doesn't have asphalt. Should be available in 20" too. I had issues with my front wheel of my BMX washing out on my local gravel pumptrack. I tried a Maxxis DHF 20x2.4 but it kept firing gravel at my face and it was also a bit sluggish. Now using Schwalbe Smart Sam 20x2.35 (I think) and that's perfect. On such a track you need little to no puncture protection, just a bit of grip and still rolling smoothly.

@vapidoscar: me too, but unfortunately the svelt was discontinued in playbike sizes.

About 200 grams heavier than a 29x2.4 Kenda Rush or Booster Pro is Svelte?

The easiest tubeless tires I have ever had to install by far.

I have a pair of 2.25 Canis and Svelt since 2020 for trail riding. Still holding up well today despite the chunky trails they went on. Longevity is better than other XC tires from Schwalbe and Vittoria in my experience.

These tires are shipped to CA for 40 bucks while already being like 80 each?? sheesh, currently the Spesh Butcher T7 is 44 dollars, in a better shade of tan too. Too expensive

In which factory are these made? Smile

I think in this case @ratedgg13 was being pneudantic

Was them leaving the MSRP blank an oversite, or that they were afraid to tell us how much $$ ??

Bears an interesting resemblance to A TIRE

The first Svelt was out way before Pirelli even thought about doing bike tires, haha Wink

@nolimit: I hate to be pedantic, but given that pirelli started making bike tires in 1894...

 @ratedgg13: Do you though?

@ratedgg13: good for you, 90% of folks would have been hurt, belligerent or sent into a murderous rage for being called out. A little levity always goes a long way.

 @jaytdubs: we desperately a sarcasm/joke font...intonation just doesn't work with text

@jaytdubs: being right about the main point isn’t being pedantic.
For some weird reason people like to now use that word when they don’t like someone else being right, which is just a red herring fallacy.

@ratedgg13: It's not like you were wrong... Were they not one of the first pneumatic bike tire makers?
  • 1 0
@BikesBoatsNJeeps: 1882 Tom Jeffery created the first pneumatic bike tire. From there John Dunlop to use inner tube with that tire system, thus creating the first usable pneumatic bike tire. At least this is what I was told when touring the Dunlop plant when i was in the automotive tire industry
