Paul Brodie s Bicycle Show

Press Release: First Light Frameworks

A unique collection of one-of-a-kind bicycles by legendary framebuilder Paul Brodie, displayed together for the first time.

Paul Brodie built his first steel bicycle frame in Vancouver in 1984. He played a key role in some of the original mountain bike brands, before running his own bike company for 15 years. Over his 40-year career he has played a part in fabricating over 4200 bicycle frames locally. He was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 2005, and taught his own successful Framebuilding 101 class until 2020.

Last year Paul endured months of hospitalization and chemotherapy after a cancer diagnosis. He now is back in his shop and creating his popular YouTube videos on everything from custom bicycles to bass guitars.

We believe his impact on framebuilding can't be overstated and wanted to recognize the accomplishments of a true local legend, so we've worked with Paul to pull some of his iconic work together for everyone to appreciate.

This show features a collection of Paul's completely hand-built, one-of-kind bikes that have never been displayed together. They have set trends and won international awards over the past four decades. Up close you'll be able to understand the attention to detail and unique blend of craft and artistry. Some of the stories behind the builds are almost as good as the bikes themselves, and Paul will be in attendance to share his insights.

TICKETS: $20
One ticket gives you access for the whole weekend. Tickets available here.

There is a strong case that Paul Brodie, invented the sloping top tube in the mid 80's, or as we say in engineering, he invented it so well it never had to be invented again. Prior to that, mountain bike frames had evolved from clunkers back towards road bikes, especially with the steepening head and seat angles, but top tubes were resolutely horizontal. The wasn't so bad for taller riders but at the time the industry didn't have good geometries for smaller riders, as evidenced by all sorts of people riding around without enough seat post projection, which you really don't want on the North Shore. I think it did free up thinking about possible frame geometries as the suspension era arrived, so it was a significant contribution, and Brodie is rightly in the MTB Hall of Fame as a result. I will be going to this event as it's not far from my house.

My first real mountain bike was a Brodie Bigshot that a buddy, who was working at John Henry at the time, built up. I have such fond memories of that bike. It did right by me for a lot of years. I doubt I would have been so enthusiastic about mountain biking if I had started with something less.

I still have my Brodie Expresso custom from 1996........it is a hardtail for those that don't know. Loved that bike till I finally bought a full suspension bike but it was a Turner 5-spot.......sweet bike too! Looks like a very cool show!

I also have a '96 full custom expresso! A bunch of years ago had Chris Dekerf convert it to singlespeed (horizontal dropouts), disc brakes, repaint in original Brodie racing yellow with NOS decals and a matching custom yellow Fox talus fork. Still looks and rides awesome!

Very cool. I still wish I never sold my white Holeshot frame with Easton RAD tubes. Such an awesome frame.

Brodie made some of the earliest "huck-to-flat" full sus monster bikes I'd seen at the time. The Devo & 8-Ball with Marz. Shivers, #legend Mr. Brodie's engineering abilities are really incredible, the steam powered bike was really mind-blowing. If I lived in Vancouver there's no way I'd miss this exhibition.

Nice! As an aside, would love to read an article about his role with some of the original mountain bike brands.

I'm pretty sure every OG framebuilder wanted to look like Tom Ritchey.
