by Ed Spratt

As a first-time venue, Glentress delivered incredible racing action as the technical and flat-out course tested the world's best as they hunted the ultimate glory of the rainbow jersey.

In the U23 Men's race, Charlie Aldridge mastered the Scottish course to take home the rainbow jersey. Charlie Aldridge looked strong from the off as he battled off attacks from Adrien Boichis and Dario Lillo to secure victory. Adrien Boichis tried his best to beat the British racer but an attack up the first climb would fail and a gap would build that proved impossible to close. Dario Lillo wrapped up the medals 29 seconds off the pace.

Samara Maxwell secured another gold medal for New Zealand as she dominated the U23 Women's field. Samara Maxwell took the lead up the first climb on lap one and never looked back as no rider had an answer for her. The Swiss riders of Ginia Caluori and Ronja Blochlinger would try their best to catch the new World Champion but they would have to settle for the silver and bronze medal positions.

Pauline Ferrand Prevot made history once again as she secured back-to-back double World Championship wins. The French racer started off slow but quickly caught a hard-charging Loana Lecomte up the first climb on lap one and never looked back. Pauline Ferrand Prevot was unmatched as she pushed a hard gear throughout the race piloting the new Pinarello hardtail to its second win of the week. Loana Lecomte secured a silver medal as she rode a faultless race but just never had the power to match the race winner.

The biggest fight of the race was for the bronze medal position where we saw potential 3rd place finishes from Puck Pieterse, Mona Mitterwallner, Alessandra Keller and Evie Richards throughout the race. The last lap would leave it all down to Puck Pieterse and Mona Mitterwallner with a final big punch from the European champ putting Puck into the final medal spot.

Tom Pidcock became the first British man to win the Elite XC World Championships as he dominated the race to take the title at home. Tom Pidcock took advantage of a slightly improve grid position to make his way to the front of the race during lap two and an attack during the fifth lap was impossible to match. Sam Gaze also came from a mid-grid position as he battled past the world's best and almost looked like he could take the gold, the New Zealand rider secured the silver medal. Nino Schurter didn't have the power to secure an 11th title but he does still leave Scotland with a bronze medal.

With the World Champions decided for another year riders now have a short break before the return of the World Cup season later this month in Andorra.

That’s an awesome shot over the gap jump. Liking how XC courses are getting more technical.
  • 28 1
I agree. Pretty soon it's gonna turn into trail bike racing.
  • 59 0
@danielfloyd: Pauline primarily rode the B-lines (and won) so I think it is just great that there are different options and riders can play to their strength. Pauline was gaining time on the climbs, Loana on the descends, it keeps things exciting. Line choice, risk/reward, endurance, strength and skill... it is all part of the varied sport of mountainbiking and it is cool to see the race to not be decided on a single quality.

flag snomaster (Aug 13, 2023 at 8:12) (Below Threshold)
@vinay: Do you really think B lines should exist for Elite World Champs?
If roadies are going for MTB stripes, make them ride the tech!
  • 37 1
@snomaster: Yes I do think it should for XC as much as it does for DH and 4X. It allows for A-lines which are faster for the more skilled riders. Or the other way around, removing the B-lines doesn't just leave the technical A-lines, it just requires those A-lines to be toned down. In racing (including in DH) you see it isn't necessarily for the less skilled racers exclusively. It also offers an option for riders who may not be able to develop the speed required on the run in due to whatever reason (mechanical, crash, mud-clogged drivetrain, collision with another rider...). If we don't like to see Pauline win the race riding B-lines it may be an option to make those lines such that you'd lose even more time riding those. But I still think we need those in order to also have the really exciting tech stuff.
  • 9 3
@snomaster: correction: cyclocrossers are going for mtb AND road stripes.
  • 6 1
@snomaster: Sure, but perhaps with a bigger time penalty than a second...
  • 19 0
@vinay: I was spectating at the track and saw PFP hitting the A line on both the big rock drop and the gap jump that has been all over the photos. On the laps that I was next to those things, of course you probably got a more complete view of things on the TV, just wanted to point out that she was riding the big tech features some of the time
  • 2 0
@elbandido77: Cool to hear. I don't question Pauline is super capable of hitting the tech stuff, it just seems that for this particular race she has decided that the hardtail (and riding accordingly) was faster. If you were on the spot, you may just have seen things we didn't get on the telly. The commentator (I was using GCN+) mentioned that she typically sticks to the B-lines for the first few laps so that she has them dialed in case she needs them, but apparently she did hit A-lines further in the race.
  • 19 0
@snomaster: that works OK in a DH or Enduro race where there aren't other riders, but if you're coming into a gap jump in a group of ten the ripple effect of the brakes might mean the rider at the back, though skilled enough, might not have the speed to make it safely. You need options in a group race.
  • 4 0
I was having a hard time figuring that shot of Hatherly out; "what am I seeing? Wow, amazing!"
  • 2 5
@psyfi: what you're seeing is a mountain biker wearing aero socks and shoe covers. What the actual...?
  • 3 0
@vinay: I do also wonder how much the "PFP takes B-lines" thing is a holdover from a few years ago when everyone was calling her a roadie and saying she won on pure fitness & stuff like that. She's put a lot of work into her technical riding the last few years. I could be wrong but I don't remember seeing her hit a bunch of B-lines in this race, or generally shying away from tecn in the other races I've watched this year. And she managed to podium at Val Di Sole. I think the B-line thing might just not be true anymore?
  • 1 1
@bkm303: From what I understand in the commentating, she got a lot of coaching from Celine Ravanel on the tech stuff. She has an XC background but has also dominated the EWS for a couple of years. I admit I've only recently started to pay attention to XC racing so I'm not aware of what people called Pauline back in the days.
  • 3 0
@bkm303: She took b lines on all but 2 features iirc, not because she can't ride them, she chose to take the salmon ladder every lap, but because 1) she picked the HT for the climbs and wanted to avoid punctures and 2) the only criticism for the course is that the b lines didn't give much of a time penalty. Given her strengths it was a smart tactical decision.
  • 1 1
@bkm303 : Did people actually say that…? Wow, LOL.
That's basically saying 'These road cyclist are way better athletes, it's not fair if they participate in our sport!!1!'.
There's a set of rules and circumstances, and the one who tackles that within those rules is the fair winner, end of story.
One may not like someones background or whatever, but you it's just dumb to hold it against them.

Thanks to all the volunteers and everyone who made this such a fun event to attend for my family. Away from the controversy about the UCIs botched decision making there is a lot to celebrate. Big crowds and good vibes. We got home after a 5 hour drive tonight and my 6 year old insisted that we went straight out on our bikes.

that top photo shows how xc is no joke and is in some aspects as hard as Dh and enduro! A lot of us would struggle on the tracks they have to race on! my self included Smile

This was the first xc event I've been to, and I've never watched it on tv either. I was blown away. Really good day, really hard track. The corner into the a or b line was a hairpin over off camber tree roots. Gnarly

Shame Glentress will probably be a one time venue, with all of the features being taken out post race.
  • 4 0
Where will the future world champs train if we don't have a world championship course?
  • 11 0
This is such a shame - where is the legacy? We have an Olympic/World champion, U23 World Champion, a former World Champion - and still no UK XC World Cup.

We badly need one to show youngsters what a great sport is - and to inspire them.
  • 10 1
I would've loved to watch this, but the uci and media outlets make it increasingly difficult to watch bike racing.
  • 11 1
Oh really? I haven't heard anything at all about that this year.
  • 3 0
World champs has always been a PITA to watch in the US - it has nothing to do with "this year" or discovery. If you had a subscription to watch the world cups in the first place, the process for watching world champs is just like last year (VPN to the UK).

Just wondering, I see some forks with the (RockShox) SID logo and some forks with white RockShox lowers (like the one ridden by Loana Lecomte). Are these SID forks too (considering that's their XC race fork) or is it something Blackboxy (under development)?

Other than that, this is exactly why SR Suntour doesn't seem to have such a great reputation among the general public. If the elite races would have been won by RockShox or Fox sponsored riders, we'd have seen the banner on at the top of the main page already. Suntour doesn't bother, nor do I recall them having done so when Tracey Hannah was winning WC DH races nor when their athletes were winning at Rampage. Then again I could obviously have missed some ads. Fair enough though, Pauline got along just fine without rear suspension.
  • 5 0

  • 3 0
I think the white SID's are equipped with Flight Attendant. In a few of the photos that labelling is visible in black, placed vertically down the lowers.
  • 1 0
Ah, thanks both of you for clearing that up. Interesting to see the top finishers are using electronically controlled suspension damping these days. Do Puck and Sam use Live Valve?
  • 1 0
I thought Suntour did some promo spots after Pidcock won the olympics but I might be making that up. Agree that it's weird to see thim taking W's and not promoting it though.
  • 16 12
cool but why is shell, an oil company, sponsoring a cycling team? aren't oil companies destroying the planet?
  • 12 8
Worse than that. Its not sponsoring a team, it's sponsoring the GB team. British Cycling have weathered a storm of protest, but haven't budged on it. Pretty shocking imao
  • 3 0
True but they are probably very happy when most of us load the truck and drive for hours to reach their favorite riding trail/park (not me luckily). Biking is about being in the open air but this does not mean it is going to save the planet unfortunately.
  • 2 4
The people buying and burning their products are destroying the planet, there are viable alternatives available to almost all fossil fuel use. But yes this green washing is a bit like McDonalds sponsoring the Olympics.
  • 2 0
@L0rdTom: yeah the highest levels of racing require these athletes to travel all over the globe to perform so they are those people sadly. then you have cyclists on the other end of the spectrum still riding bikes from 80s/90s and don't own a car lol.
  • 2 1
@devinkalt: sadly most cyclists who do it for a hobby land heavily on the fossil fuel consumer side, and athletes are the worst of us!
  • 1 0
...like the rest of us. As for greenwashing, I dunno, but for me, cycling has never been a "green sport". Just like soccer isn't. One local game of footie pollutes more than several seasons of motorsports where I live, simply because of the crowd numbers.

Sooner or later Shell will need to find new ways to make money, just like the rest of them. Don't care much because Shell has no presence where I live. I can't buy it. But I can buy a can of Red Bull which has travelled far & wide and consumed power, water, and dumped it's fair share of emissions before reaching my hand. If I want to buy bricks & stones for my house and garden, they arrive from China rather than local quarries. If I want to buy fish from the sea outside my door, this fish will have travelled to China and back for treatment and packaging (true story) before eating power in the shop freezer.
  • 3 0

  • 1 1
@W99x: There were no piped in noises at the DH. The commentary trucks for TV were located under the gondola where they exited the gondola station, so what you heard were the gondolas. Somewhat unfortunate!
