Pinkbike Podcast Episode 57: What Were the Best (and Worst) Trends in Mountain Biking?

Earlier this week Boone Technologies unveiled an aluminum crankset that immediately sent me down a rabbit hole filled with nostalgia, back to the days when anodized cranks, derailleurs, and quick releases were commonplace. The anodized-everything trend is largely a thing of the past, but I'll admit to having a soft spot for shiny purple or blue components. For this week's podcast, we decided to take a look at the trends in mountain biking over the years and decide which ones might be ripe for a comeback. Richard Cunningham joined me and Brian Park as we discussed everything from bar ends to Big Hits.

James Smurthwaite chimed in on this episode to deliver the latest mountain biking news, and while he wasn't able to join in the main discussion, he did send over a photo of his flat bar equipped Iron Horse as an example of a trend that came and went.

THE PINKBIKE PODCAST // EPISODE 56 - WHAT WERE THE BEST (AND WORST) TRENDS IN MOUNTAIN BIKING?
April 16th, 2021

Is there a trend that you think should have stuck around? Or one that needs to end immediately?

...and talk too much

And they name all our local goods in the title, so our secret playground is no longer a secret.

And they mostly act like little pussies, only ones I can watch is Remi Metallier, Vinny T (whenever he uploads anything), Jordan Boostmaster, and Sam Pilgrim occasionally because he's f*cking nuts.

The rest are either annoying, suck at riding or make videos with 2% riding and 98% talking.

Worst trend? taking biking too seriously. i'm all for geeking out on geometry and discussing bike stuff; but people need to chill. i dont care if you ride an e-bike, or a hardtail. i dont care if youre bike cost 100 bucks or 10,000. i dont like when riders are looked down upon if they cant hit a big jump, pump out 300 watts, or buy the latest drivetrain. its just bikes. get out there and have fun.

I have to say, all of my fears about eBikers have proven themselves unfounded. I have also noticed that they are getting more people into mountain biking. Those people are mostly boomers and dads with beer guts, but hey, they're getting healthy and getting outside.

eBikes are also an excellent training partner if you ride analog. I ride with a friend who's on an eBike and it absolutely destroys my legs (this is a good thing).

@rickybobby18: when will the haters realize the more people that are into our sport the better? The next Walton brother (aka someone with a ton of money to pump into trail development) might get into mountain biking through ebikes, or at the very least your next trail club meeting could have more fresh faces. (which I’m sure all the haters are a part of and volunteer their time for right? )
  • 17 7
@rickybobby18: I gotta say BS on most ebikers being boomers & dads. Around here most are 20's & 30's fat ass slackers. And as for training, not much aerobic going on there, not sure how you figured that one out.
  • 37 19
 Worst trends...

People being so narrow minded and letting others bother them.

Don't like ebikes? Don't ride one.
Don't want to use uplift service? Don't use one.
Don't like hardtails? Ride a full sus.

I could go on...
  • 13 0
@coletrane-mtb: IDK for certain that more is better... its debatable and probably based on individual perspective. Some folks appreciate the quiet... one with nature, or man against nature perspective and on the other end some people prefer the crowded ski slope feel. Sure I would like more trails, but I'm not sure I would want them to be privately owned, and certainly don't want to wait in line for my turn.

  • 5 1
@chriskneeland: love that analogy I would use it for sure, thanks
  • 8 8
@chriskneeland: to be clear, I don’t own or ride an ebike.

But how does what you just said apply to downhill? Or lift assisted riding? Or shuttling? Kinda seems like you’re arbitrarily gatekeeping.

I ride with a friend with an ebike. It destroys my legs and we are able to keep the same pace. And then he is faster than me, or paired with me, on the downhills.

Like many areas of judgment, it’s easy to judge when it’s not personal. When I didn’t have a great friend who eBiked, I judged. When I started having great rides with someone on an eBike, I stopped judging.

Podcast question: What are some red flags of poorly set up suspension, and what are some indicators of well set up suspension? Also any other suspension set up tips and tricks would be appreciated.
  • 6 2
 Red flag #1: OTB!
lol
  • 3 0
arm/wrist fatigue, getting bucked excessively, harsh bottom-outs (Assuming that lack of skill/fitness isn't causing those things)
  • 6 1
If your air suspension feels harsh, you might need to add more air. It seems counter intuitive but it's easy to misdiagnose and remove air when you really need to add more. If the starting point for your suspension is too soft, you'll sit deeper in your travel and blow through it super quick, which can feel like your suspension is too firm or harsh. It might then be tempting to remove air in an effort to soften the suspension when really you need more air to provide more support so you don't blow through your suspension so easily.

  • 27 10
E bikes are the worst trend. Appealing to the lazy masses and people riding up the dh trails. Getting dangerous out there.
  • 12 3
Save this for your haters for 10 years, when battery tech has improved enough to allow people to "pedal" their motorized bicycles in max assist mode for way longer than they're capable of today. Non-motorized trails should stay non-motorized. Not everything needs to be as easy as possible.

@mikekazimer the RF next cranks had fake carbon stickers on the outside, but they did indeed have structural carbon inserts. a borked example here, displaying the carbon-y goodness inside: www.mtbr.com/attachments/crank2-jpg.389573

Only ebikes are not a trend - they are now here to stay. I used ta think this too then my best bud wrecked, broke all kindsa bones & can't ride w/o an ebike now. I'll take my bud on an e-bike over not having him. Does it really matter tho that fat old (or young) slobs are ebiking? If they are not rude & shitty, fine. Anyone rude & shitty should get hard-checked ebike or not. Also as long as ebikers aren't pretending to pedal on strava...we're good. And more so, ebikes are hardly allowed on any trails in my area (and I'll call that shit right in & even wait in the lot to report plates if needed) so its not really much an issue...for now. What can ya do, just be mad all the time?

 Yup.

Oil-slick fits in with what remains of my 90s big hair. Haha. My hair fell out and I expect oil-slick will too. I tried ano-purple but prefered ano-red. Now it's ano-black or ano grey or ano-silver only for me and my baldness.

Question for the panel: Do you think the bike industry is too small for its own good to have objective reporting? Many stories here and elsewhere read to me like they are reported with kid gloves due to personal connections with people involved. The examples that spring to mind are the various EWS suspensions reported as freak accidents, or atherton bikes crowdfunding as if it is a normal thing for a company that doesn't strike any concern. It is obviously no ones fault and you all do an amazing job, but I wonder if the current climate discourages gritty reporting or stories.
  • 2 1
 Possibly.

We are privileged in that we're big enough to not have to choose between paying the team and telling the truth or reporting on uncomfortable topics. But yes, there are lots of industry connections in the MTB media world—sometimes that helps us do our jobs and sometimes that certainly contributes to biases. Despite that, I work hard every day for our work to be as objective and useful to the community as possible, and to limit any impact those biases might have.

I like to think that we're pretty even handed when it comes to product verdicts. We've never shied away from reporting on bikes breaking or products failing. I will say that some industry people absolutely lose their marbles when we give their products positive but not freak-out-hyperbolic-praise reviews. There are definitely some weird, unfounded expectations out there.

Things like the EWS doping stories are incredibly complicated, and to be honest I look back on that one with a lot of pride. There are lots of stories I wish I'd had us approach differently, but that's not one of them. I'm also pretty certain that if we hadn't reported on that story, nobody else would have.

I listen to a good handful of bike industry podcasts, but none of them have the evident camraderie this one does- it's clear you all enjoy and respect each other, even when Levy and Kaz give each other shite. RC...the way he pulls history to contextualize the conversation is stellar. Can't wait until you free Levy and put him in the mix- he has, in other episodes, shown huge respect for RC. In the end, you guys are fun and informative. Thanks.

I have to say the best invention is defenitely training wheels. Cornering feels so much more stable with an extra set of wheels in the back. plus they look freaking dope with the flame paintjob. only downside is they need a lot of maintainence. mine keep coming loose even though i put some red loctite on the bolts. Red loctite might be the best invention now that i think about it. Works great on everything. I use it on my headset and axles, works great on stem bolts, heck I haven't had to/been able to remove anything from my bike in years.

I love the retro themed podcasts. I've been on a mt bike since 94. Care to comment on the idea that dropper posts brought back full seat tubes? It seemed that suspension designs were turning the seat tube into a seat mast. Ever since dropper posts all bikes now have a full length seat tube.
  • 1 0
@brianpark: You mentioned in this episode you have a hard time finding shoes with wide enough toe boxes. I feel like there are a lot more of us out there that appreciate normal toe splay and not having their feet fall asleep. Are we really such outliers that the bike industry can ignore us, or are there more of us than they think? Sounds like "somebody" with some industry connections and access to demographics research could gather some numbers and flex their clout. Maybe even 3D print some lasts for the manufacturers Wink !
  • 1 0
I had a bunch of people reach out and say that Shimano does good wide sizes. I haven't tried their current stuff, but they're next on the list for me. Also I've got some Lakes coming because they do a really nice chart for sizing on all their different lasts. lakecycling.com/pages/sizing-charts

Fingers crossed!

Question for the podcast. I bent my derailleur, I confirmed the hanger is not bent, but the derailleur cage itself is bent. Is there any hope to bend it back straight or should I just throw it in the garbage? If it matters it is a shimano slx 12 spd.

 @mikekazimer @brianpark podcast question:

Why don't b-screws simply have a # of clicks (like rebound) or some some way to determine / reset a b-screw on the trail? I just moved to SRAM X01 from NX (everyone says NX sucks, but it worked flawlessly for me - never once had this issue) but now I am adjusting the b-screw after literally every ride - the jockey wheel is constantly rattling. SRAM video on youtube shows setting the b-screw WITH sag & the red b-screw tool. One of my local shops says the red b-screw tool doesn't work - another shop says it does but sag doesn't matter. Meanwhile my brand new upper jockey wheel sounds like its grinding itself to death & no one can fix it. Any ideas whats up? Seems like X01 should be an upgrade, not the worst product
  • 1 0
 Check your chain length.
  • 1 0
@Joecx: Just got new X01 & chain, sized @ shop...two diff't shop checks. Still rattling...
  • 1 0
@Mtn-Goat-13: if you have a 52t cassette you need the white tool. or just put it in the second largest gear and adjust the upper pulley so that it can get into the eagle gear without excessive crunching.
  • 1 0
@DAN-ROCKS: Thx for the note - took to a 3rd mechanic & they removed 1 or 2 links (?) and that seems to have done it. More so tho - I'm still wondering wtf is up w/ no b-screw clicks or number (something) that could help riders on the trail since once that is set & theoretically in perfect place, would be super useful to reset on the trail (perhaps) when it gets bounced out. I've needed b-screw adjusts often after riding ruff terrain near here but now I'm afraid to touch it having messed that up every time. I saw a hack online for marking the derailer w/ a sharpie 7 figured I'll try that but...just wondering why the manu's haven't done this .Would help demystify things
  • 2 1
A steel single-speed hardtail is the best +1 bike. You can ride way more that you think you can with them, surprisingly fun, and the same old trails feel different on them.

But most importantly nothing is a better reminder that most of the new products that come out are kind of... silly. Is anyone really that much better off because if their 12 speed rear derailleur instead of a 11 speed? Or even 10 speed?

But yeah... pretty tough sell as a primary rig.
  • 1 1
Agreed, so much more fun on my steel single speed!

I LOVE my 'Basic Ti Singlespeed" !!

I built up a Kona Ti Honzo in 2015 when I worked for a Kona dealer, and its been my one constant MTB ever since.

I totally agree, that they are torture in big mountains... up and down... but in rolling terrain (like here in NW Arkansas) they're a blast. I grab my SS for about 40% of my rides, and very seldom regret it. My full suspension geared bikes come and go, but the SS keeps me honest and keeps my skills honed.

Yes! Thank you for recognizing that tall riders get the shaft when it comes to sizing. Sure, I am not cramped in reach anymore but by the time my saddle is where it needs to be, I am really putting a lot of weight on the rear. I blame the whole "playful" everything movement.

Is the Enduro marketing fad really a thing of the past? I'll admit it's calmed down a bit, but in a Pond Beaver '21 article you all reported on a glove with "Enduro" in the name. Seems to me those gloves would be perfectly suitable for all types of mountain biking, but maybe I'm wrong. If I buy the "Enduro" gloves maybe I'll be more rad and corner like Sam Hill.

Everyone should be testing 32's. Trek is, and i think their company wins a lot things and sells a lot of stuff, so other companies would be stupid not to have plans to not get left behind. but i wonder if we will see 30.5 / 29er mullet bikes first? I think pinkbike should pay me (or maybe someone more qualified Wink to build some test mules and and find the fastest geo and wheel size on a few different tracks. If done well it would be something that is done by many different people, different places, again and again as trails evolve. even if someone's already doing it someone else might test some small aspect better. We need the meta data. companies have no incentive to publish data, so pinkbike should do it to educate buyers to drive positive growth.
  • 1 0
ive thought a lot about extra big wheels and idk the downsides of huge wheels other than weight and acceleration. more momentum though and more monster truckness. still though there has to be a limit... plus it is hard to design long travel bikes with huge wheels. wheels take up a lot of space

@sluggo6 Just reporting the facts. The unnamed carbon frame maker is legit, but he did say: "Don't try this at home, please, it was just an experiment." My sentiments are to err on the side of safety and don't drill anywhere on your bike, regardless of the material, where you wouldn't want it to break at the worst possible moment.
