Praxis Launches 420g Carbon 'Lyft' Cranks for $420 - Eurobike 2023

Praxis had a few new products on show at this year's Eurobike, but the biggest news was the launch of its second-generation carbon Lyft crank.

It can sometimes be tough to remember all the essential details at a show like Eurobike. Still, handily Praxis has created its updated Lyft to weigh 420 grams for its 175mm option with a cost of $420 dollars giving us one less number to remember. The claimed weight remains the same for the 170mm option with a 165mm crank having a weight of 412 grams. The new cranks can be used with BSA / BB90-92 / T47 EB / BB30 / PF30 with chainline options of 55, 52 and 49mm.

Alongside the new Lyft crank, Praxis was also showing off its alloy Zane kids crank which is available in lengths from 120mm up to 150mm. While Praxis says this is very much intended to be used as a kids crankset there is no set weight limit imposed. Maybe the next Grim Donut should take short cranks to its logical conclusion and feature 120mm cranks for Cathro-sized humans.

Praxis also told us that they've now licensed narrow-wide technology for all its chainrings, so they should play nice with all 11 and 12-speed chains.

 I was talking to a roadie mate the other day who'd recently had a bike fit. He was saying what a difference the bike fit had made, especially the 5cm change in crank length from 175mm to 170mm. His other half and I looked at each other and both said "you mean 5mm", to which he replied, "no 5cm, no way I'd do something as stupid as pay £150 to change my cranks by 5mm". He was not happy when the penny dropped!

 @GoldenPromise: yes, steep long hills feel like more effort. I’m planning to move to 175. On the road I can tell. My point is mm do matter if you worry about pedaling efficiency, ie XCO and XCM

 What are you trying to say though? 5mm is a huge number esp in regards to crank length. I normally run 172.5 and 175 is noticeable too long for me.

 @mrkkbb: You might want to check out some of the many articles/videos etc. that consistently debunk this idea. It's a geared system, it just changes your ratios, which can be adjusted back via the chainwheel or cassette. The advantages of shorter cranks include less pedal strikes and better peddling ergonomics for your legs. I went 165mm and it's fantastic, just takes a couple rides to get used to

 @GoldenPromise: Do some research on this and don't buy into the myth regarding crank length, it's a geared system. With a shorter crank (165/170) if you just go down a couple teeth on the chainring (or up on the cassette) all will be back to normal. There is extensive research and science online that backs this up

 @mrkkbb: that’s what gears are for. On an MTZb I’ll take improved clearance and drop down a gear. No idea what length cranks my old road bike has.

 @Moonie2123: Yeah, I think those studies are a bit flawed. I mean, on a level road without any obstacles that cause the torque required to turn over the pedals to vary within the same pedal stroke they are correct to a certain extent. However, human beings are a weird power source. Our ability to push with force varies a ton over the range of a pedaling motion. Anybody who has ever lifted weights or played an actual sport knows that, yo. In other words, for roadies and the like, crank length is likely more about personal preference and gear choice. With technical climbing and bursts of needing maximum torque, within a certain range of motion, you are better off with fewer, deeper knee bends than more and shallower pushes.

 @Parker9146: I'm 5'10" running 165s, from stock 172.5s. After the first two rides, you really don't notice a difference. Just need to gear up/down a tooth or two, all good.

My trail bike came with 165's. After destroying them my LBS accidentally ordered me 175mm replacement. I didn't know it either. I rode the bike for a few rides noticing how something was off, but assuming it was me. But what I did notice was how much better the bike felt.

My LBS offered to correct the mistake, but I said hell no. I also took the opportunity to gear taller for a higher top speed.

Not everyone agrees with shorter cranks, there are always outliers.

 @brianpark: swapped my Kenevo SL cranks for Praxis alum version after seeing Jason’s ankle rolling, then proceeded to go through no less than 4 sets of their alum crank arms which all bent landing normal sized drops/jumps.

 @panthermodern: You’d like the original 420 break crank from the legendary dirt jumps here in Seattle circa 1997...it was a slightly-bent steel Profile drive-side crank arm with a custom bowl in the chainring-mount bolt hole, a custom mouthpiece at the pedal threads (there’s a well-placed 3/16” welding expansion hole there), and the welding expansion hole at the spindle functioned as the carb. 40 ounces to freedom made it hard to ride...so it was 175mm to freedom =P

 Agree with marijuana sentiment, but traded my 165s and went back to 170s off road and 175s for road. Even after knee surgery. 165s seemed ineffectual.

 @woofer2609: As a consumer, it would be a negligible difference in cost. As a producer, it couldn't be more the opposite. Regulation has led to extremely thin profit margins which has led to small farmers no longer being able to stay competitive.

You can certainly grow mediocre weed yourself for nearly free. Good genetics and quality nutrients aren't cheap. Neither is land, compliance, or labor.

 @wburnes: If you've read the studies it indicates that irresponsible use of high potency cannabis leads to increased risk for individuals predisposed to psychotic issues. The likelihood of it happening to responsible users is very low. All drugs will have consequences (most of them negative) which is why I do not partake in any drug use outside of my cup of coffee but this study has been blown up by click bait journalism and anti-cannabis paranoia.

Everything in moderation. Especially BS media.

 @nickfranko: this is no joke, I'm going through a grade 3 sprain right now. i didnt realize how brutal it is, never done that in 26 years. now i have a different perspective of what a "sprained ankle" is.. lol, 3 hospital visits, dozens of x rays, orthopedic specialists. just started walking after 16 days and probable another month before i can ride lightly.

 Praxis LYFT and XX1 user here. If you buy the Praxis bb don't forget the proprietary Praxis bb/torque tool. But....the Praxis crank comes with a metal bearing preload adjuster whereas SRAM's cheap adjuster pretty much needs a $36 Cane Creek preloader for if/when the oem item cracks.

 I will stay FAR away from these for sure. My ride buddy snapped THREE crank arms on his Kenevo SL and i broke one my self. Not worth the risk. I can't understand why Specialized didn't recall these, too dangerous.

 Im 6’2” and my element came with a 170mm crank. I haven't noticed at all. I do pedal strike far more than my top fuel did in pos 1-3 so im thinking if this cheap RF affect crank goes like my last one ill get a 165mm
