Highlights, Results & Analysis from the Cape Epic 2024 Grand Finale

by Ed Spratt

After eight days of racing across 605km, the final results are in from the 2024 Cape Epic.

In the UCI Women's racing the Ghost Factory Racing team of Anne Terpstra and Nicole Koller was unmatched throughout the week winning every stage. By the end of the final stage, Anne Terpstra and Nicole Koller crossed the line eight and a half minutes ahead of the Cannondale Factory Racing pairing of Mona Mitterwallner and Candice Lill.

After a strong end to the week, the Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne team with Matthew Beers and Howard Grotts maintained their lead and finished the race over 11 minutes ahead of the 2nd-placed team. The World Bicycle Relief team of Nino Schurter and Sebastian Fini started the race strong, but some slower stages in the second half of the week saw them unable to fight for the overall win.

Check out the results and some quick analysis from the final stage below.

bigquotesNo free-ride final stage, the Grand Finale in 2024 is packed with adventure. But the conquest of the untamed is within reach. Only 65 kilometres remain. Of those remaining kilometres the majority are in the Jonkershoek Valley, with the world-renowned MTO Forestry Trails providing the bulk of the riding.

Ater a tough dual track climb into the plantation the trails begin by continuing the ascent up Irish, the dropping into Armageddon. A zig-zag of climbs and descents follow with Red Pheonix and Neverending Story completing the exploration of the valley’s northern slope.

The Valley Trail crosses the river and Bosluis climbs the southern slope to the XC Trail. Exiting the MTO gate the course drops into The Dentist and climbs the Jonkersdrift trail en route back to Coetzenburg. A new singletrack traverses high above familiar terrain into Eden, then its on to Mont Marie for the Gutted Baboon and Element before a race back through Eden, down G-Spot and the World Cup XCO Trails to the final finish line. With that the Absa Cape Epic and the untamed are conquered. And your name will be added to the Book Of Legend.

 All those fancy flight attendant, mono stanchion fork, super light xc bikes from Specialised, Cannondale or other big brands can't beat Tersptra and Koller on bikes of a brand (Ghost) which is known to be unremarkable to a large market segment. In the end, riders do matter more than any superficial/marginal upgrade to bike tech. Congrats again to the duo!

 You sound convinced the big name brands have better bikes.

 To be fair Ghost are on flight attendant too it seems. And their bikes are super light. Have you seen the mono wheels they run lol.
  • 6 0
 HAHA, except they are also on Flight Attendant with Transmission SL and a $4000 wheelset!!! cmon man....

 Insane to think they only have 11 minutes separating 1st and 2nd and 29 seconds between 2nd and 3rd after 25 hours of racing!!!
  • 5 0
 It's not that insane. Road races and mtb races often are separated by 1 second or less. It's group racing, not a time trial.
  • 1 0
 It is, but not much more insane than the Enduro races where the top 3 are within 10 seconds after half an hour of total stage time.

 There's also G-Land (a jump trail also in Stellenbosch), built by the same guy as G-spot. I honestly think this was not a conscious innuendo. But have been the delight of many a teenage boy to drop in conversations.

 G-spot sounds like a great cross-promotion opportunity for OnlyFans.

 Who the f came out with that Toyota's trail section???
  • 6 0
 No idea… That trail has been called G-Spot for ages…
  • 12 0
 @SchalkMarais: so Toyota had an option of which section to sponsor.

They picked the right one.

 @dustyvoid: what's wrong with it?
Great fun to ride there.

 @FloImSchnee: The wife likes it.

 I’ve been trying to find it for years.

 @sportstuff: Clitoris? Never heard of that bike brand. I can't find it anywhere
  • 2 0
 @sportstuff: you can find it on Trailforks… but probably only if you subscribe…
