THE PINKBIKE RACING PODCAST // EPISODE 4 - LEOGANG WORLD CUP POST-RACE WRAP-UP PODCAST
June 14th, 2022

Henry Quinney and Ben Cathro take you behind the scenes at the Leogang World Cup race.

On this episode of the Racing Podcast, Ben Cathro and I are joined by the video director Pinkbike Racing series, Harry Jenkinson. We talk about the highs and lows of World Cup racing and the difficulties of following it. As always, we give a mixture of qualified opinions and pure speculation on the race that was. Including but not limited to track closures, bike damage, and when oh when is Benoît Coulanges going to win one of these things?!

Quinney is a legend. I bet he could even make a conversation about hub spacing hilarious. What a pickup.

I could listen to Henry all day, more Quinney please PB!

The key is to listen to these in the shower and then it just sounds like they are in the bathroom with you due to the audio quality.

@henryquinney: I'll keep asking until PB responds...when is PB gonna do up a gofundme (whatever) for the DH team? Lots of us are down for that. Maybe this will be in the cast, but w/ the Jr. male rider down - is PB looking to find a replacement? Sad but seems like the spot needs a rider.

Totally effin love these casts... even when the PBR team implodes, disappoints us, fails and drives away with their chains dragging.

It's not a GoFundMe, but we're working with @DHaRCO to offer up the team kit, with some of the proceeds going towards supporting the team.

As for Jackson being out, we're going to support him in his recovery and do what we can to help him make the most of his narrowing window as a junior.

@brianpark: Sign me up for a jersey at least. This venture has gotten into tracking the DH World Cups beyond just looking at the cool tech from the races.

@brianpark: but why not a go fund me for extra funds so Jackson can continue with current pb support and a temp rider could replace and get the go fund me money

Win win

But more work for cathro

@brianpark: great to see PB upholding their values here. I always worry about riders that get hurt and seem to be left hanging. Y'all are doing this the right way and it shows!!

I absolutely love the content. The first mini-doc that was released had me tearing up and honestly is one of the best bits of MTB film (and adventure sport film in general) I've ever seen.

Thank you!

Yeah I'm down for a jersey too - personally I'd prefer it to just have the stripes and pinkbike and dharco written on it, not the full sponsor list. I'd feel silly wearing a jersey with sponsors that dont sponsor me and also dont match my bike.

@brianpark: Yeah, I'd buy some PB kit. BTW - I'm a douche: meant to say I was bummed for Jackson 1st of all for getting nuked (and Henry's balls-joke in the podcast was still pretty funny) and was really just wondering if there are alternate / backup riders so...guess that answer is nay. Anyway - def wishing Jackson a speedy recovery & zero "toss his ass" sentiments.
  • 1 0
@fabwizard: Agreed. Jackson could prob use some extra cash for rehab and...oh wait, maybe that's just in the US where healthcare means Insurance Giants make all the money while everyone who's not Elon Musk goes broke...dunno. Just sayin - I wanna support, whatever that is. Maybe there's only 23 of us that feel this way...

@brianpark: great work. I know it's not always possible, so, if we don't get international delivery is there any sort of charity for young riders who maybe can't afford all the gear, in the US, the would like a free jersey or two? Support the team and do a little something worthwhile, not expecting Pinkbike to set that up, just a name would do. Just a thought for later.

Is the position for washing Cathro's jock strap still available?? Asking for a friend......

Why would anyone downvote this comment? Adding it to my All Time Fave PB Comments (of All Time)

Really enjoying this series, we know Ben's quality but the once bumbling Brit is really coming into his own.

The chat about being mindful of putting pressure on the riders, I speak for myself but assume I'm not alone in saying to the team, don't take my excitement and celebration of your placing well as an expectation that you'll do that at every race, I just want to see you all enjoying the riding. And should it happen, don't feel any pressure to make up for time out while your back bottom repairs.

And thanks to all the Pinkbike team, not just those from whom we cannot prise away from the microphone, for making this all happen.

But seriously, where is episode 2 of the documentary? So lazy.

Is it just me that thinks “oh, another F1 reference” every time Henry mentions Jordan Williams?
  • 2 0
@henryquinney: You mentioned that the quality of parts the PB team runs has made it so the team is not blowing through components which is fantastic. But you also said that you're swapping tires and chains out after one weekend. I am curious what do the teams do with their non-prototype parts after a race weekend? Do you donate them to privateers or save them for just in case scenarios or...

We have a few different things going on. So, when we have stuff that is mechanically okay but cosmetically ruined it goes in the privateer loan box. This is stuff that people can use, scuff, scrape or even break and it's not a big deal. It also means that if somebody is just waiting on a part they can borrow a shifter or a brake without worrying about eating into our team stock. For tyres, the riders normally go home with them to train. If there is something that is getting a shade worn for them, we of course give them away to anyone who wants them at the events themselves. Largely, most things that have life left in them go to a good home one way or another.

@henryquinney: Who is training on the Mike Bears?

I feel like comments about sound quality only fuels @henryquinney, but it’s gone from bucket boys to trapped in a well during a wind storm boys

That's a fair comment. This one was definitely the bridge too far. It'll get better next time!

"wagon wheel a toddler down the track" had me roaring!
  • 1 0
Talking about that step-down could maybe be compared to the "sausage-kerbs" in F1 that had to be repositioned as drivers pushed track limits and launched into the air if they made a small mistake past one of those kerbs. Lika the apex of a corner that step-down was a near mandatory feature for good lap times and riders will push themselves sometimes past their limit.
  • 2 0
"near mandatory feature for good lap times" - good, leave it in
"literally unable to stop in time if you cock up the difficult section just before and really dont want to do it" is a safety issue that needs addressing

@AyJayDoubleyou: Could they have added a bail net?

@mikelevy @mikekazimer - loving the PBR cast and all but 1) its not a (real) replacement for the main PB Podcast and 2) this is now week #3 w/o the main podcast

How are we supposed to ride bikes with broken minds and hearts? I need my weekly fix, ya people, so come on and make us happy with some chitchat (please). Seriously, this is getting depressing.
  • 2 0
Gonna puts it in 30mins Smile
  • 1 0
@mikelevy: OH HELL YES - glad to hear (and my bitching is all in jest but also pleading). The PB pod is just the shit. Y'all say things.

I’m once again asking please, release pink bike racing jerseys on the shop.

Thank you,
  • 1 0
Please keep these going....please.... I love listening to both of you generally (I'm a Scot in the US) but the combo plus adding it into real world cup adventures is fantastic.
