That dude was riding on whats called "cryptobiotic crust", which takes decades to recover from disturbance. Just goes to show people who do it for the boyz are heckin fools
@ithomas: While people that ride on crypto soils suck, in this particular case, I think you're confusing "cryptobiotic crust" and "speckly dirt that forms after it rains and then dries out."
@toast2266: yep. I ride in a few places where people claim it exists too. You see tire tracks through it and mysteriously the tire tracks are gone the next season or after a few good storms and the soil looks like it did before the tire tracks.
@toast2266: No, that was definitely biological soil crust. The lighter colored soil to the right of the rill might be the kind of mechanical crust you're thinking of, although that might also just be blown-in sand from previous disturbances covering and killing an existing biological crust. But the crust they're busting is the lumpy, dark stuff that's formed by lichens, fungi, and cyanobacteria over hundreds of years. And it may never recover, especially with repeated impacts and climate change.
I think you should add a "Monday Saves" comp. People pulling off what should have been a disaster. Just to help get us through the week. Might brighten our day. . .
Being a parent, I always cringe at the beginning of a kids clip without a full face helmet. I have to find of a video I recently saw, epic fail! Dude lost control of his bike on a wooden feature and it went into a raging river, as in probably,$5000, gone for good raging.
Someone said the same thing a few weeks ago. I'm sure women fall too but my theory is that only men think anyone wants to watch their shitty riding on video and actually take time to film it. Women just ride.
@sino428: The ratio of me eating dirt to my girlfriend even having minor crashes is not a balanced statistic. I make sure none of it ever gets filmed though.
We need to have an article posted on Pinkbike immediately to determine how to get more women involved on Friday Fails. And don’t forget the minorities too!
Okay is the dude that crashed on what might be cryptobiotic soil alive at 2:12, or just knocked out cold. He looks pretty motionless after that impact.
Rider: "I'm good!"
Onlookers: "Um, OK. Nobody asked."
