Begging a deeper discussion about the tightrope-walk relationship between ‘size of balls’ and ‘available skills’. The balance of the two is the driver of talent, but the imbalance you mention is the producer of Friday fails!
@tobiusmaximum: very well framed. There is a rather large gap (by my standards) at one of my local trails that I know I could clear if I just had the balls to commit to the line. Then I come here and watch Friday Fails and realize that I'm 40 and I have no business just starting to hit gap jumps.
Interesting question, how many injuries does posting these fails on Friday vs. Monday save? Without these cautionary tales I'd be charging into every weekend hopped up on gusto. Thank you Friday Fails.
Can’t agree. Some are indeed big ballers, but big portion of folks here are a kind that show up for an adventure but then want to call mommy as soon as ship leaves the harbor.
@jaytdubs: Lmao, you make a good point about learning when you're 40+. I'm incredibly happy I learned how to ride hard in my early 20's. I'm introducing a 45 y/o buddy to DH, and we're really easing him in slowly. The body doesn't heal like it used to.
@jaytdubs: work your way up gradually, if that's the kind of riding you want to do. Progression is really fun, and if you follow a friend in who knows the right speed it could very well be in your skill set.
I love the fails...but what I don't get is how virtually no one loses their cool and starts swearing. I fail half as hard as any of these and I'm cursing at the top of my lungs. Cursing myself, my bike, the obstacle, the surrounding trees any small forest creatures that might be watching, etc. etc. there are saints among us.
With all the crap going on in the world, this brought me some comfort today. A good reminder that we're all a bunch of failures trying our pathetic best!
I love those gimbal chest mount clips. The world goes to shit, limbs and bikes tumbling every which way but the gimbal sits there with the camera dead steady and level saying "I got this!"
...and you always get a great shot of someone double chin. I know, I have a few shots of my own. The gimbal really adds a HOLY SHIT WHAT IS HAPPENING vibe to a crash vid.
Whenever i watch friday fails and somebody stacks it almost immediately after the start moving/rolling, i always think of Alan Partridge doing his sports commentary:
[Olympic diving] "Greg Louganis... Down, Double back twister, bangs his head and in. Textbook. Lovely."
The guy at 3:24. We see this all the time. Dude lands after a jump and immediately goes over the bars? Are they holding their brakes mid air? What gives?
Coming down with most of your weight on just one foot causes the dreaded front wheel jackknife ender. Check out the end of last week's fails to see the world champ one foot lander in action and watch his front wheel just go totally perpendicular in a split second.

How do you know your statement is true ?
Global survey ? Boots on the ground anecdotes or just pure generalisation and speculation ?
But... I think I’d remember that one at 0:53. That dude deserves to fall after that ridiculous move he pulled getting over the first roller.
