I have come up with a surefire formula to get on Friday fails:
1) Stay seated when going off jumps, 2) Whatever speed you think you need, cut it in half, 3) Keep your body as stiff as possible, and 4) When in doubt, grab the front brake as hard as possible.
@IluvRIDING: Lol, I was riding and overinflated my tires because the shop pump was broken (knew that in hindsight). Two minutes into riding, I come around a loose corner and completely lose traction. I ran my bike out exactly like a Friday Fail. Took out some air pressure and everything was fine.
@Arepiscopo: Yeah there were two in that bunch where speed was definitely not an issue- the attempted send of the roll and then another soon after. I cringed at both of those.
6) The "Bad Advice" drop Step 1: approach drop at mach turtle Step 2: as soon as the front tire is over the edge, jam butt cheeks into rear tire immediately Step 3: watch in horror as your face is catapulted into the ground
...aaaaand that's why i keep it at about 80% as i near 50 yrs old. Every gnarly crash like that has correlated to one more percentage point off the old "give 'er 100!." Want to ride the next day and just don't heal fast anymore.
So the 2nd jumper at 3:17: Was this a rebound thing or a skills thing or a combination of the two? Jumper #1 shorted the jump but smoothly rolled over the transition while jumper #2 went for the extra credit thrill ride. Asking for a friend. Thanks
Skills / bike setup. You can see the second rider went down cause after the first landing he bounced into the second drop without being able to absorb the impact, body moves back, front gets light and he has no more control over the direction of the bike from that position.
First rider slows just before the drop, moving his momentum forward. Pushes forward after leaving the drop, weight over the seat and is able to squash the first compression.
Second rider pulls up and shifts weight backward. Totally over the rear wheel and off balance. While it might not be the main reason for the crash it looks like the suspension blew through the travel as well, leading to him getting bounced that much harder. But main reason is pulls on the bar and weight back.
0:32 is Highland and I will be there in a month for opening weekend!! That poor girl at 1:00 didn't take the drop confidently and damn did she slam. I hope everyone survived and I don't make any Friday fails footy in a month!
I caught my bars on a branch sticking out on a really steep rocky incline once, sent me sorta sideways OTB, slammed into the rocks heavily on my right side, pretty sure my spine is a twisted pretzel at this point. I tried to avoid a rattler once too that was right at the worst rockiest part of the trail, I almost killed myself trying to avoid the damn thing, I probably would have suffered less damage if I had let it bite me. Both crashes if caught on camera would have made the Friday fails for sure.
There is always a clip each week where you are thinking "How in the world would someone wreck on this feature?" at the beginning of the clip. That award this week goes to 1:35.
Only 2 Assapults this week. Maybe people are learning?
i have come to the conclusion that there are two types of ppl in this world.
the ones who just fricken suck at riding bikes and make me sad
and the ones who are better but still should not be doing some of the stuff they are
Way more concern about friend's well being than normally. Only a few folks outright laughing. As for 1:36, pretty sad to eat it on a completely rollable drop
@tofhami That's me, was very excited to get into Friday Fails. Its a Ribble HT 725 and it rides very nice indeed, bit heavy though; my build is 16.4kg.
I hate that question. Let's see, the person is balled up on the ground after having a full yard sale and trying to take out a tree with their shoulder. No, they are not ok. The question is, are they going to be leaving under their own power or will alternative arrangements need to be made.
@carym: Can someone please explain this to my better half haha... I know it's because she cares and all but it's the worst when I haven't even got my breath back, zero idea what happened or what hurts and she NEEDS TO KNOW IF I'M OK RIGHT NOW
No, the new thing is to get a 160mm full suspension ebike, full face, pads, and a chest protector and pedal around the fireroads pretending you are bombing some insane downhill.
Not kidding, I see it all the time here, while I am pedaling on my hardtail, feeling all superior until some guy on a cross or gravel bike bombs past me going down and makes me feel insecure.
@carym: Hahaha, I have seen the odd ball roady bike guy smash through insane rock gardens making us all look like fools but never seen the fully decked out DH racer on an Ebike, maybe it is coming here soon LOL
I don't care how silly it makes me look, I like my teeth and I plan on keeping them in my head. I still wear an open face for a lot of xc though, but the second there are rocks or I am trying to push it the FF goes on.
@carym: yeah, becoming increasingly common here too. E-bike and fully decked out head to toe in matching MX kit, FF and gogs for a ride round the local woods. Quite often they have a dubious idea of what a 'good' trail is too.
@everythingsucks: Yea, but I bet when you go down a moderate singletrack you don’t have some 50 year old guy on a hardtail on your ass because your are going so slowly. Ride what you have and enjoy it and look at the positive: You never have to think about what bike to ride.
1) Stay seated when going off jumps,
2) Whatever speed you think you need, cut it in half,
3) Keep your body as stiff as possible, and
4) When in doubt, grab the front brake as hard as possible.
my god people don't know how to ride a damn bike.
Step 1: approach drop at mach turtle
Step 2: as soon as the front tire is over the edge, jam butt cheeks into rear tire immediately
Step 3: watch in horror as your face is catapulted into the ground
Hope that dude's ok. He was rippin'.
No think no dig.
-british guy before he's hit the ground- you alright?
Only 2 Assapults this week. Maybe people are learning?
1) Do more pushups and upper body strengthening.
2) Reinforced my belief that winter is for skiing.
1) For a brief moment at the start I thought this might finally be what I've asked for, the FF that was all "Oh sh*ts"
2) Thought 1:34 was slo-mo, but nope, just slow
Go educate yourself here it’s a must
