Looking at the width of it I think it's either the entrance to an underground parking lot or a loading dock either way it looks like a damn long way down.
Don't actively watch Friday Fails and then complain that the fails were too harsh for your eyes. No one is making you watch them. People crash and get hurt sometimes, and if they film it then the footage may end up here. Stick to the 'gram if you want filtered content that gives you a heads up if someone gets mashed badly.
Is there a nuanced word or slang, related to or derived from Schadenfreude that mean you don't necessarily delight in the pain of others, but you're damn sure entertained by it?
Holy crap! A couple really close calls for young riders in this video. That last one could have ended so much worse if he didn't avoid those trees. Head first! Lucky kid. No one wants to see that, even if he made it thru ok. Oof. Be careful out there kids. Not everyone is a pro and send it at speed. One head first trip into the trees or rocks can be the end of any riding on two wheels.
Yes..... there has been the mandatory paywall comment already - however I'm conflicted between optimism and disappointment that nobody has likened the crash at 3:41 to users hitting a paywall.
Broke my wrist really badly a couple days ago at the Kamloops Bike Ranch. I was really sad I didnt get it on camera, it was such a gnarly crash. www.pinkbike.com/photo/21039965 this is a picture of my wrist.
@jubs17: sometime within 2 months hopefully. I was supposed to go whistler in a month for the first time, but now I wont be able to. Really sad about that, but ill try for next year.
2:22, I enjoy a touch of the bike revenge. Also, possibly the best (or worst) timed PB logo exit on the final clip, that was a mean looking ragdoll that we couldn't fully engage in.
@plyawn: So, that worked like a charm. As I'm now a decidedly typical end-user your simple instruction and cut-and-pastability are to be commended. Thanks for letting me continue to be an armchair IT person.
All that said, amazing speed scorpion to jogging finish by that kid.
Do IT! Do IT!.....Was he talking to the biker or the kid in charge of putting up the mattress on the tree....
I almost didn' t watch today just from the intro clip....I got a concussion watching it.
I guess they need to get all the evil ones out before the Outside lawyers put an end to brutal crash videos.
If you’re taking vid, you’re probably doing it to post somewhere. One of the moments that led to the end of my Moto bike racing wasn’t a crash, it was a super close call- super sideways at 40mph on a single track in tight pine tree woods playing with friends. No girls, no prize money, no video. Winners and losers was down to your word against whomever. But if I had a buddy standing there with his phone out, maybe I would have injured out of the sport instead of walked away like i did. Or worse. It’s a different mindset when you know the world may be watching.
seriously! was out on a ride last night and some a**hole laid his bike down in the middle of the trail at the bottom of a steep roller going into a creek (him and his buddies were inspecting the drop in from the opposite side ). Saw it in time and smashed my brakes before dropping in. He seemed so inconvenienced when I stayed at the top and barked at him to move his damn bike so I could drop in (he gave me a look like I was the a**hole)
Who is that on the Jazz hands drop ? I saw that last weekend in action while riding the lift at Angel Fire . I was like yo some dude just did an unintentional front flip into the bush !
These were some really hard hits this week. Almost certain some concussions and broken bones ensued. Very cringy. Entertainment factor was low, cringe factor was very high. I wish all a speedy recovery, so much pain in this FF.
IDK about this anymore.. This one was extra ugly- absolute real life injuries. How many of these guys set up this dangerous stuff that a full blow DH racer wouldn’t risk hoping it makes it to Saturday Sends, or Sunday Saves. Or at least Friday Fails..
I’ve been thinking for a while it would be nice if there was injury data included. First off, it might be sobering for some of these people (if they watched FF) before trying some of these features. Secondly, we could anecdotally start to link types and severity of injuries to certain failure modes.
I get the concern. We don't want to promote something like this if it's gonna encourage more people to go try things waaaay outside of their ability level. But people have been setting up crazy stunts and documenting it - successful or not - since long before Pinkbike was posting mashups of said fails, sends, and saves. It's just part of human nature
@pcmxa: I think you're onto something. as @reindeln points out, are we by enjoying these videos actually encouraging people to take risks they otherwise wouldn't, and almost certainly shouldn't? Being of a generally libertarian mind, I'm not so concerned about this question unless there is an informational asymmetry.
The real weight of Friday Fails can only be understood when the ultimate fate of the crasher is known. These videos would certainly be less fun to watch if we knew how many of these people suffered serious injuries.
Do we have a responsibility to understand the full gravity of these crashes? Hell no!!!! Let'em crash, kids and all. Just kidding about the kids though, those are tough to watch.
@half-man-half-scab: agreed....if its clearly a minor, if you don't show him/her getting up after the crash, I don't want to see it (I say this being a dad of two....though I'm sure my younger self would have absolutely no issues ...crazy how that changes).
If anything, wouldn’t seeing these crashes discourage people from riding above their ability level? Hearing the snaps of either bikes or bones should discourage most from sending a 20ft gap they aren’t ready for.
This isn’t jacka$$ where video submitters are making money or fame off of doing stupid stuff.
@Pcurt27: When I was young and dumb, money meant nothing and fame was everything! Imagine showing your friends you moment on Pinkbike at school the next day? Makes me wonder if there are some many rejected vids where bones are stabbing through clothing. Guess those go straight to YouTube.
Outside bot trying to drum up support for cancelling FF?
Seriously though, there were some brutal hits today. FF does not make kids to do stupid things, nature takes care of that. I and probably most of us over 30, are lucky to be alive with some of the stupid things we have done.
@jaytdubs: I’m watching regardless. I just like information and it seems we have a pretty good (though highly biased and anecdotal) data set in the accumulated FFs that could be used to generate some interesting insights into mtb crashes.
But I mostly just watch and rewatch fir the schadenfreud.
@pcmxa: I have to say, this is why I click on the FF most every week myself. The anatomy of crash is worthy of study. Most of the classic over the bars crashes can be attributed to a shock in desperate need of service. You have no idea your high speed rebound is now too fast until you hit that high speed jump you’ve been nailing for a year. And now you’re looking at the ground. ..been there
@reindeln: can vouch for this - as someone who spent far too much time crashing and building stupid features in abandoned mines and quarries. No video encouragement needed, no decent equipment - just a crappy cheap helmet, a £100 hand me down bike and the confidence of youth. At least the kids these days get their 15s of fame!
@grahamsinc: Yeah when I was young did lots of stupid stuff and ended up in hospital and not even a photo! I'm glad I'm not growing up in this age where the bar is set so high and everyone has access to video content like Hardline and Rampage. The videos we see of the pros make it all look so easy and then FF shows what happens when unskilled and fearless youth tries to copy them.
We're going to build a huge beautiful paywall and the Pinkbike users are going to pay. And the reason they're going to pay and the way they're going to pay, Bob, is this. They want to watch the Friday Fails. They just want to watch them. The wall is going to cost $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. That's what it's going to cost. It's going to be a powerful wall. It's going to cost $99.99.
#longliveFridayFails
If not, there should be.
#longliveFridayFails
This week was intense!!!
19mph = bad case to OTB
19.1mph = massive overshoot, dead-sailor into the trees
I will never leave the ground again.
perhaps the GIF just hasn't been finished yet.

That rock drop to scorpion was horrible.

I'm not convinced PB and ubiquitous Go-pros are to blame for kids setting up ridiculous stunts and hitting them for their friends.
This week did seem extra painful though...
