 Honest question, is the acceptance of violence but rejection of sexuality and swearing in media an American thing or is that pretty standard elsewhere too? I understand that in day-to-day life it is the opposite (lots of sexuality and swearing compared to violence) but watch any PG-13 movies and it's amazing the violence that slides through.

Seems odd for PB to censor swearing on Friday Fails. I mean showing a bunch of people getting hurt in ways that may negatively impact them for the rest of their lives is a perfectly acceptable way to generate revenue but someone dropping an f-bomb is verboten? What metric is being used, what are your standards?

 I noticed it last week, but though that maybe there were just less people swearing in videos. Was gonna wait till this week to make sure.

 @highfivenwhiteguy: very good question. I'd like to see responses from the international audience as well, although those responses may not be in English so that may not help...

 @highfivenwhiteguy: It bases hugely on the demographic we are from, and what we are used to. For example the demographic that I'm used to might be a rather old school one, where swearing is limited, and especially not in front of women and children. So i highly appreciate words being beeped out.

 @highfivenwhiteguy: My take after a few minutes of thought. Coming from someone who admittedly is comparatively very conservative with regards to both sides you mentioned... I agree with you on some nasty stuff slipping into PG-13, and that's a whole 'nother topic... in regards to your original FF cussing censoring... some thoughts. It might be that this "violence" is more accidental, typical, and day-to-day. It's not someone hurting someone else, gun/knife fight with blood... it's people falling over, and pretty much every kid/person no matter how well or poorly they were raised has had accidents and seen other people fall and get injured too. In other words, it's tame on the violence scale... more of the oh no, oops, darn, shoot, poop equivalence for language, not something that would warrant PG-13 or R ratings. And additionally for the nastier crashes, I'll admit I often look away for the last half-second when impact happens on brutal scorpions/head slams... there's not really a "look away" alternative for the audio, and there's not really advance warning... plus when watching without earphones that expands it to all within earshot, you/someone else can choose to (at least momentarily) not watch but a sudden profanity could affect others...

 @commental: Well sure. But just for comparison's sake, that would be like not watching the whole video. I want to hear the rest of everything. Nasty crashes, you can see em coming and turn away. Profanity doesn't have much/any warning, as it could be a different word or mere silence... wincing/glancing back and forth to miss a fraction of a second of carnage? Easy. Somehow mute-unmuting in time, or otherwise messing with volume, nigh on impossible.

 think it’s for the kids - someone said a while back here that they watch this with their kids (as do I) but aren’t a fan of their kids hearing any swear words - it’s a fair point

 @CrankeeetUp: Exactly this. It's made my experience better. I have three young kids who all ride. They love watching these videos, but aren't yet old enough to know how and when to use what we call "strong words." It's great to not have to mute the videos for them. And while I know it benefits me personally, I still think the trade off is worth it. How much does hearing those f-bombs add to the watching experience? You can argue that it adds some, but it seems to not match the loss for young kids either having to mute the videos, learning to use R-rated language, or not watching at all.

 We need to ban anyone below the age of 18 from the internet so the adults can get on with their lives.

 @Cyberhatter: This applies to some of the other responses as well. So watching people get hurt is good entertainment for the whole family but swearing because someone just watched a friend possibly die is unacceptable? Maybe people swear in the videos for a reason and the swearing is part of the experience of crashing or watching someone crash. You know, on account of the emotional duress? And furthermore why should everyone's experience be censored to protect your child? Maybe you should be a parent and control what your child consumes rather than expecting others to do it for you?

Again, let's not kid ourselves. We are watching humans get hurt for entertainment. It is brutal and violent. Maybe if children have the COMPLETE experience of someone getting hurt and are bothered by it they won't think it's funny when people get hurt and won't have a stomach for violence later on.

When I was in high school one of the fathers of a student was a trauma surgeon at Harborview in Seattle. He came in one day to make a presentation to the class. What he showed us was truly disturbing. It was a collection of photos he and other hospital staff had taken of injuries and deaths caused by stupidity and carelessness. We saw genitals blown off by guns and ripped off because a drunk man on a sailboat tried sliding down a mast and hit a cleat on the way down. We saw a leg bone that had shot through the heel and shoe of a motorcycle rider that wasn't using proper boots. We saw a man who was almost cut in half from the bottom up after he crashed and slid along a guardrail due to intoxication. We saw a young girl who had died because her parents did not properly fasten her seatbelt and the lap belt basically folded her in half and slammed her head into the dashboard. The room was silent, no laughing and no joking. That presentation deeply disturbed me for weeks and has an effect many years later. But guess what I always do now? I think twice before doing something risky.

My point is that by seeing the raw truth of a thing you can make a real decision about it. Seeing violence and being repulsed by it is a healthy, normal response. Why are some people trying to make violence more palpable, and why are parents using violence as entertainment for their children?

Maybe being bothered by someone saying "OH F***" because they just watched their friend get paralyzed is a good thing.

Wow you guys are sissys I said I appreciate it. Lighten the f up. Pinkbike has 1 purpose. To make money. They will do to their videos what it takes to get eyes. If that is swear words or if it's not swear words that's what they will do. I appreciate the foul language being edited because I watch these videos with my kids. I watch them with the volume down because until people starting whining about it I had no idea that they were bleeping things. Now I will turn the volume up and likely watch more consistently. This is not censorship. This is capitalism. Vote with your dollars - stop watching and let pink bike know.

 @Cyberhatter: Call somebody a sissy--immediately lose any credibility. Also: use a version of the "f word" yourself while simultaneously saying you appreciate foul language being edited--immediately lose any credibility. Where even are your values?

 Easily solved: just always remember to swear in a foreign language when somebody crashes ... never censored

 @nvranka: It's a cultural thing. Some communities embrace cursing as additional color to language while others view it as a very taboo thing only to be used under extreme circumstances.

 @commental: If you speak in a language to someone else that doesn't understand what you're saying you can say whatever you want and do no harm since there is no understanding of what was said. Always swear in a language that your audience doesn't audience...time to swear in Swahili!

 @SuperHighBeam: If English speaking parents watch FF with their kids it's reasonable to assume that non English parents do the same. Therefore those kids will hear profanity in their own language as PB are only removing those words when used in English.

 I feel like the discussion had gone a bit off track. The point is that PB felt it necessary to censor bad language in videos that monetize violence. And bad language can hurt an ego but the effects of violence can range from short term physical discomfort to death. Clearly one is more detrimental than the other yet PB chooses to censor these videos for language. I call shenanigans.

 @commental: Would that mean swearing expressed in any language would need to be bleeped? I haven't paid close enough attention to tell if only English swear words are being censored.

 @highfivenwhiteguy: Central to this argument is what is considered "violence". Generally speaking, most would agree that violence only exists when one person deliberately injures another, or oneself. Crashing in mountain biking is self inflicted and often accidental rather than deliberate. Hence although the crashes can be gruesome they are not an act of violence. Which brings me to the difference between violent and violence. Violent is an adjective describing the severity of an incident which may or may not be induced by another person. Violence is always induced through deliberate self harm or by someone else on another person. This is all to say that Pinkbike monetizes accidental violent crashes, rather than violence. Context makes all the difference. With that said, I do think there are limits to what kind of crashes Pinkbike should post. That that involved serious injury such as broken bones, TBI, or anything else that required hospitalization should be off-limits. Friday Fails is supposed to be humorous not cringeworthy wherein all the crashes shown could be able to be walked away from.

 @SuperHighBeam: I'm personally pleased the expletives have gone (though I'd also be happy if there was a "click for the sweary version") - I often watch it with my daughter who I try not to swear in front of. We want more kids in the sport, don't we? And if a significant number of parents won't share videos of the sport with their kids, it means fewer take it up and play football instead... I also don't think FF is especially violent - there's no blood or close-ups of shattered limbs. Those of us who have bounced down the trail a few times probably know which clips involved a trip to hospital, but our kids probably don't - them and their mates fall over all the time and just get up again, so it's not "bad" to them.

 My parents simply explained that there is a time and a place for certain words from about age 8 on....never had an issue.

Things are much darker out there than a few swear words these days. Guess I’m jaded.

 I don't know. I have eBikes filtered, but I could watch a 50lbs $8,000 bike clock a rider in the back all day long. One day we'll get a fail where the batteries get punctured and cook off with a shower of fireworks and burning carbon fiber. It would be a shame to miss that.

 Same here. Not enough frames/pixels to see, but rear wheel trip was sudden and harsh. Can't see what pulled it...

 Update: Theory: he sits down on the rear wheel and applies "crotch brake" by getting sucked in. You can hear a buzzing sound that sounds a bit like shorts sitting on tire, and it's consistent with the braking.
