Has there ever been such a complete and amazing story told over 10 seconds as no wheel kid? The story starts off with a journey of joy and hope. On the protagonist's journey, we as outside observers begin to see the threads of his journey unravel and the foreshadowing of his doom. Yet even as we watch him fail we see a glimmer of hope that he might pull off an amazing miracle and somehow re-insert his wheel mid land. But, in the end, the tragedy unfolds before our eyes as the journey was destined for failure before it began.
I watched, eagerly expecting the moment of imbalance, the failure of his fledgling technique, then the hint of that terminal rotation that would leave his face carousing with the dust and worms. And yet, there was none. The mystery deepens. But wait, what is this? Such a cruel twist, perhaps not even noticed immediately by the rider as he readied himself for a triumphant return to earth. Then, you can almost see the moment of realisation - perhaps a flashed image in his consciousness of an axle resting, forgotten, on a car seat. And then, nothing but the darkness accelerating towards him.
i foreshadowed impaled soil to life changing face plant, but alas there was a shift in the wind as a spoke sacrificed his symmetry and sent him to the side... bravo spoke bravo.... kid can still model for a box of cereal
Ouch!.
I've been thinking of getting a full face for a while. When I read stuff like this, that Bell Super doesn't seem so expensive anymore.
Get well soon, man!
@decom: They are so worth it; I had a gnarly crash this summer and my full face helmet saved me. I still had a 10 second memory and spent three days in the hospital, but no dental work and no long-term effects from whipping my shit OTB. Already bought another and haven't even gone back to riding yet.
@decom: Thanks! It happened so suddenly, was actually on an easy ride with my buddy after his bout with an autoimmune disorder, he had been off the bike for a year and we were just chilling. I was up front and on a blown out dusty trail- front tire slid in moon dust when I was fully committed to it, and then immediately caught traction, sending me diagonally OTB. It was steep enough for me to fall through the air and not be able to catch myself. Teeth hit dirt directly and before I knew it, I was spitting blood all over the place and digging through the dirt for my lost teeth.
There was nothing to be done- root extracted and a titanium implant post put in where one tooth was, other front tooth is a shard and will need a crown, as will a third tooth.
I historically have been a fan of a light full face (I own a Stage) but in the summer heat, I’d grown fond of riding in a half lid for comfort- so how is that working out for me now? I’d gladly pedal up with a light full face in 90 degree heat if I knew what this would feel like. Hindsight 20/20.
Maybe i'm getting old but I really get concerned with people just 'giving er a go' with inverted stuff. Listen kids: most pros use a foam pit to get comfortable and safer with this stuff. Please don't just try and give a back flip a try and see how it turns out. Push your limits and have fun but for god sakes don't land on your head and neck. Some people (even teens and kids) never fully recover when things go bad... Debbie Downer out.
Actually, on more stop motion, it's a quick release - wow, the dad didn't put the quick release on at all! I mean, I have a quick quick releases for all my bikes and even if the lever is not latched on at all and the opposing nut is somewhat screwed in, the wheel can't be pulled out. Sheesh! Way to go dad! I'm surprised the kid didn't notice the front wheel wobbling on the fork.
Ha! I'm his dad. And I felt HORRIBLE!!! We did tighten it before riding and this was like his 7th time on this jump. I followed him a bunch and didn't notice any noises or issues before we filmed this either so really have no idea what happened. The wheel itself softened the blow a bit. He did it two more times after the crash as well and he's jumping higher and farther than ever (we did replace the skewer just in case).
@darkins44: I suspect that the QR in question uses an external cam? They are known to deform and be rendered unable to maintain tension (but they are cheaper to manufacture and lighter so are found in many bikes with quick release wheels). Grab an internal cam skewer for under $10 and rest easy.
In 1:57, the guy didn't lower his seat and riding too high and too forward. Then, jammed on his brakes. In both of those cases, the features are not sessioned enough to see where the lines are, especially if you need to bail out safely (there was an option on his right side with the dirt beside the rock slab). At least the girl riding the rock had her dropper post down and lowered her center of gravity. She was committed and almost saved it. Good on her for that. Worse thing is to bail on the steepest sections by trying to step off the bike. The failure of the clip at 2:22 is the videographer who didn't cut out the last little bit. It would've been a save!
All the folks who crashed should have used Kenda tires to stay rubber-side-down.
Except the ones who crashed doing backflips. They need to ditch their Kenda's, because the Kenda's kept the rubber-side-down too much.
My dentist is definitely getting a new Yeti. And the Periodontist probably is going to buy a new yacht.

Want kids that don't live in your basement as adults and have the confidence to try new things? Teach them that they're capable!
It was on a decent spec'd Cannondale Trail 24.

Whoever was riding at 2:22, I was cheering for you to make it. So close! lol
Wouldn't "Effing" be a better option to not swear? Effing people who don't swear properly.
