To the kid at :50. You're lucky to not be quadriplegic after that axial load from that height. (At least I hope you're not.) The dad and ER doctor in me really hopes you plan things a little bit better because I've seen too much suffering. Have fun but work up to things, progress slowly and don't "huck and pray".
@slowerthanmydentist: My special lady friend is an emerg doc. She watches friday fails and calls out the injuries she is pretty sure the crashes have caused. I'm not gonna let her watch that one. I wish I hadn't seen it.
@JWadd: not like I was gonna buy Yoshimura pedals anyway, but ain't no way I'm down with supporting a company that tries to make money off these. It's cynical and icky, especially without a "nobody was injured" disclaimer.
Pinkbike doesn't create the clips - they're submitted by members. Despite how aggressive the comments section has got recently, I seriously doubt there'd be people posting videos of their friends dying or getting paralysed. I'm sure most weeks do have a few collar bones and wrists going snap, plus dentists being able to afford that new Yeti, but likely not much worse than that
@mountainsofsussex: They choose the clips to put in these compilations. The ones they've chosen for years have been great. Lately, there have been questionable ones. This one was over the line in my, and many others', opinion.
I seem to be in the minority here, but to me it didn't look that bad. Maybe that's just wishful thinking. It is very hard to tell anyway from a clip like this.
@slowerthanmydentist: Friday Fails has got to stop loading these life changing injury vids. This is not sustainable, and is heading for a lawsuit as sure as some kid burned down his parent’s house because Bevis said “Fire!”
@ak-77: watch it in slo-mo. Full compression thru the dome of the head. In some sense, better than an off-axis hit which would have twisted the neck and spine.
@ultimatist: Good tip to use slo mo. It looked more like a smooth roll before to me. But it's indeed direct a direct blow to the top of the head. I took a similar hit a few months ago, from much lower height but with more initial speed. I got away with a cracked helmet and a very mild concussion. It looked like there was quite some flex in the ramp, let's hope the rider didn't get injured too badly.
@ak-77: i broke my neck landing directly on my head. It was over a jump i came up short on, but the moral of the story is dont land on your head. Not cool.
@drfunsocks: That's a nasty injury, I hope you recovered well from it! I don't think anybody plans to land on their head. I got very lucky, I realised that immediately after I got up.
@ak-77: And what's your expertise here? We have a literal ER doctor that was the second comment, and unless you're also a doctor, your opinion doesn't really mean much. No offense.
@ordell1234 I mean yeah, its brutal but the people in the video posted these in the "crashes" section of pinkbike knowing that they could very well be featured on Friday fails so I don't really see an issue.
@ordell1234: I know the guy who crashed at 2:04 it was over at Summit Ridge in Maple Valley WA. He's fine just broke his helmet. The trail is used for night sessions and he got clotheslined by some lights strung up in the trees.
@ordell1234: @ordell1234: These are user submitted/uploaded etc. Im sure all riders are fine, otherwise there are some seriously morbid users out there.
Second note, PB users will literally find anything to B about, just as I'm being a B about you being a little B about these crashes. Its bikes, grow up.
I did this same move on a sidewalk years ago, worst crash of my life. Ended up with 6 staples to hold my head together and a major concussion. And the pain from effectively jamming my entire spine was awful. Hope this guy is doing ok.
leggit the nastiest friday fails i've seen in a long time - this isn't the usual haha dude ate shit - this is i'm sure there is a permanent injury in there somewhere.
I disagree with many of the commenters saying this episode was too much. We are mountain bikers, not knitters. When things go wrong, you can walk away with a graze, or a bruise... or get carted away with broken bones, head injuries, spinal injuries, and very rarely death.
Friday Fails is the flipside of the awesome sends and videos that we all love to watch, and your fifteen year old kid is watching them too and wants to repeat what he sees. And if he can watch the sends, then he should also watch the bends.
I feel pretty strongly that 'crashing well' is a skill. In today's segment I see people riding, AND crashing, way above their skill level. A piece of advice....If you want to be able to enjoy riding for the rest of the season you may want to work up to these things. Otherwise keep the content coming.
Honestly our sport can be brutal. I am a middle aged f*ck now but I have been racing DH since 2003. My oldest kid is just getting into bike park riding. We watch Friday fails every week and we always have a good talk about what went wrong. Please don’t cancel cultural FF because each crash is basically a lesson learned on what not to do. I felt gross after watching the kid at 0.50 but honestly what a shit setup. Who in the hell would let their kid hit that shit just sit back and watch? WTF?
This is Faces Of Death FF stuff. Not too many knowing chuckles this week. Aside from the brutal carnage why are kids hitting jumps built from 40-grit hardpack in shorts and tees?
Captain Ahab, Moab UT @3:31, nice to see people getting out to hit some epic rides this spring. Always a plus if you can come back home with only the injuries you left with. Rode it 2 weeks ago and saw more ladies than dudes riding the loop, was so impressed!
Yep, 0:52 and 2:05 both appear to be life altering and (maybe) should be scenes from Faces of Death. Genuinely concerned for those riders and their wellbeing. *On a positive note, for once the comment section has a 97%+ agreeance rate.
taking the family member/friend shared the video, I have to assume it wasn't that bad. That flimsy wooden ramp likely absorbed most of the impact and it was at an angle....certainly not good but probably not as bad as it looked
@SATN-XC: Yeah there is lights on most of the trails there. They were definitely not intending for someone to go that way but after that crash they restrung them higher so it wouldn’t happen again.
@almeister: I was clotheslined riding a dirt bike around on a relatives farm when i was a kid, from a chain that was strung up between trees. I still have a fear riding certain trails at times thinking that someone may have set a booby trap like that!
Thankfully that tree was there to grab onto for life, otherwise that would have been an ugly change of mind consequence. Did he not walk up to it and take a look beforehand? Damn dude, just say no.
Some people just dont seem to enjoy watching people having life-changing injuries. Saturdays and Sundays are already taken, otherwise i would have proposed to outsource this kind of content in a format you could call "spinal-saturdays". Oh well... j
I'm pretty sure watching friday fails makes you a worse rider. I almost always pass, too bored studying today not to though I guess. Can't wait to have these images running through my head on my next ride..
I may have to as well. I don't know who's responsible for compiling these, but c'mon. I don't need to see someone nearly get paralyzed. Know where the line is.
That’s an excellent point. The anatomy of most any crash is worthy of study- Friday Fails has convinced me that “going out the front door” is mostly a result of light high speed shock rebound damping. Need that suspension serviced! But this mess is just sadistic.
To each their own but watching crashes and people getting hurt is not my thing and judging from the comments, I'm really glad I didn't click on play. I do like Saves though,
Friday Fails has got to stop loading these life changing injury vids. This is not sustainable, and is heading for a lawsuit as sure as some kid burned down his parent’s house because Bevis said “Fire!”
It looked like there was quite some flex in the ramp, let's hope the rider didn't get injured too badly.
@0:28?!!
@2:04?!!!!!!
That's not funny, that's not cool, that's obscene. Is the kid okay? Is the guy at 2:05 okay?
If not, don't show this crap.
If you don't know, don't show that crap.
If they are okay, I would like to see a big comment at the beginning.
I love pb, but today you failed!
Christian has fortunately clarified this...
Second note, PB users will literally find anything to B about, just as I'm being a B about you being a little B about these crashes. Its bikes, grow up.
At least according to a comment by Gavinxisxaxtravelerx ¿ on YT.
I crashed years ago and it essentially broke my neck, but I didn’t know for a few years. Now I know, 24/7.
*On a positive note, for once the comment section has a 97%+ agreeance rate.
You are watching Friday fails, not Friday sorta effed up.
If you ain’t had a crash like what you see on Fridays, you are probably not riding that hard … just saying.
:50 - ouch! hope he’s ok…
good lord - some really bad crashes today
Was that rope or cable that necked that rider? Nasty.
It’ll still be fun
The Helicopter is coming
But this mess is just sadistic.
