Video: New DH Pedals, Printed Titanium Dropouts, & a 3D Scanning Tool - Taipei Cycle Show 2023

Mar 23, 2023
by Mike Levy

After a few years away, we're finally back in Taiwan for the Taipei Cycle Show and way too much bubble tea. You know what that means: us walking around looking for all that's new and interesting. Come for a wander through the show with Max and me as we find new suspension and a dropper post from DVO, fresh downhill pedals from HT, TRP's new EVO12 derailleur, some 3D-printed titanium dropouts from Reynolds, and yes, I did end up trying to create a model of my head using a 3D scanner.

Stay tuned for more from the 2023 Taipei Cycle Show.

How DARE you cut away before showing the levy face scan!

Also I get weight limits on high end race bike parts but 176lbs? Really? I was expecting bare minimum 200.
  • 7 0
I've seen 150lb limits in the past, and 175lb is still relatively normal for ultralight parts. At 200lb, I've gotten used to the "clydesdale" label for MTB stuff.
  • 24 0
@delta5: Have you ever seen a Clydesdale? Not a flattering size analogy for a 200lb dude. Let's call you Boost and me Super Boost Plus.
  • 3 0
I was wondering if it is per pedal, so like 352 if you keep your weight evenly split?
  • 9 0
@delta5: “e-bike” is the new Clydesdale … which is also the “American”
  • 6 2
I would have to be 4% body fat to be that light.
Maybe 3.
  • 1 0
I'm glad I'm beyond the weight limit!

The scan didn't really work on my face, I didn't want to do it for more than a few seconds.
  • 5 0
@mikelevy: you didn't want to extensively blast your face with chinese space lasers for the people? where's the commitment? kids these days...

I really liked HT pedals while they lasted... that was sadly only 2 months. The reason why I won't buy them anymore is that the HT gave me hard time instead of replacing the 2-month-old pedal which was clearly defective. Also, you know - you kinda need pedals to ride a bike. So eventually, I just asked the LBS to give me a refund and let it be their problem and not mine which they happily did. That being said I have a friend who runs exactly the same pedal for 3 years with no issues and easy local access to rebuild parts... they lost me as a client with a shitty service.

I had a pair of HT enduro pedals. Lasted about 2.5 years. They became damn near impossible to unclip from while on a ride. I wanted the X3's but were impossible to find except for black. So I went back to CB.
  • 4 0
If they're hard to unclip that's 99% of the time a cleat issue.
  • 1 1
@moutnbiker: I’d try anything that would feel like a mallet, but any pedal Gwin touches you just leave your shoe clipped into for all time, I guess. They feel horrible
  • 1 0
@scary1: The X1-E Cleat would have likely been the fix for you.
  • 1 0
@ssp1: is it on this new pedal?
  • 13 0
Now take that scan down to the Reynolds booth for a 3D printed Mike Levy face in either steel or titanium
  • 6 0
This is a terrible idea, I love it!
  • 12 1
Love to see the backwards compatibility from DVO. Those 3D printed Ti and steel parts look disgusting IMO.
  • 4 0
If it is indeed compatible, I'm pretty stoked to try out that compression adjuster on my Jade X. More adjustment on an already awesome coil shock? Sign me the hell up.
  • 2 0
I hope @DVOSuspension puts some more info out about this and doesn't just tease. Already love my Topaz and this is very tempting lol.
  • 1 0
I have a "custom tuned" Topaz and it feels good. I ride it fully open all the time and there are times that i want a click or two two of compression for a certain trail. This clicker would be nice to have.

The discussion around the DVO dropper is confusing to me.

Does the external adjustment create an additional stop before the top? Or is it reducing the travel entirely?

If the latter, do they expect people to reach down there and spin it before the techy section of a climb? That seems weird.

Seems more likely that this would be more useful to use as a tool-free way to reduce the travel the post so that you can slam the collar down to the frame and get maximum dropper travel for your frame and desired seat height.
  • 6 0
It's the latter, the idea being ride to your trail systems on smooth/flat stuff at full height, adjust the max height to a lower amount for trails, extend back to max for ride home. I did have a specialized post that had 3 position locks (bottom, top, 25mm from top) I miss it.
  • 4 0
@DizzyNinja: I still have that Command Post. ZzzzT!
  • 8 0
I can't wait for some real reviews of TRP's EVO12.
  • 4 0
TRP hall lock is actually very good. I have the DH system and the derailleur does not move at all. If you are looking for that, its worth an investment. Chainguides are cheaper and work just as well.

Here to chime in, autoplay sucks, and it never will stop sucking.
  • 18 4
 -clicks on something titled "video"
-shocked when the video plays
  • 2 0
No autoplay here, I suspect it's a browser problem rather than a Pinkbike problem.
  • 1 3
I don't get it. Why does autoplay suck?
  • 3 0
@devlincc: Because usually you want to read the text in the article to see whether you actually want to watch the video. Then when you decide you do, you're going to prepare popcorn, invite your friends to come over for a cinema night, get dressed comfortably, already have a few drinks down to loosen up... Too often by then, with autoplay, the video is already finished. Now, that sucks.
  • 1 0
@vinay: haha. Wouldn't want to get that popcorn ready and it's all over.

 Levy’s face has been scanned.
Maybe we’ll see some clones in the near future.
Mike Levy’s everywhere !
  • 2 0
 Hmmm. Nearly a Haiku...
  • 4 0
 @GoWithTheFlo: Levy has been scanned.
Maybe his clones are coming.
Levys everywhere.
  • 1 0
At least, lets 3d print it
  • 8 2
Mikey Levy just getting all kinds of cancer at the end there
  • 1 0
 Or blindness.
  • 4 0
The 3D printing of metals has only just begun. The future is going to produce some cool things
  • 7 0
I think this is how SkyNet gets started
  • 2 1
3D printing of metals is decades old.
  • 3 0
@Dougal-SC: Not for the bike world, though, and not nearly in the numbers we're going to see in a few year's time.
  • 1 0
@mikelevy: When did Empire do it? Of course they casted their metal frames well over a decade ago but I recall they also experimented with printing. Though fair enough, that might only have been a single decade at most, not decades.
  • 5 0
We appreciate no clips of Henry " singing" today.
  • 3 1
Man, that's pretty cool stuff! Wish this kind of convention is in one of the 2 major centres in Alberta or even in Vancouver.
  • 2 0
Do they make 95% of bikes in Vancouver?
  • 1 1
@fruitsd79: Likely 95% of the makes and models of bikes are ridden there. I would almost say that between Vancouver to Calgary, the biking industry is phenomenal. And it's a huge market in western Canada and parts of Eastern Canada (Quebec). I'm sure they can bring that convention to North America and outside of Taipei to market products.
  • 2 0
@CSharp: Absolutely no chance 95% of bike makes and models are ridden in Vancouver or BC or Alberta or Canada or even North America. There is a BC bike show and an Alberta Bike show, but they are both flops usually. No manufacturing here to support it, and most of the big players don't even bother to attend. The primary point of these shows is to make deals on upcoming spec between OEMs and bike manufacturers.
  • 1 0
@superkeen: The conventions in Calgary suck, not sure about ones in Vancouver area. And you're right, if you want to be a player in the market, you need to bring shows like these into North America like they do it with the tech conventions in Las Vegas. It's weird that we can have RV, home and garden, and O&G - all these are like what you'd expect. When it comes to the bike industry, shops in around town will carry more stuff than any of the bike shows. Pathetic.
  • 1 0
@CSharp: those bikes were made of parts that manufacturers picked out years prior.
By the time you see them, being ridden....
  • 1 1
Mike, I can remember years ago when on the way to Sea Otter you got some tats in Oregon or somewhere along the way. Think you had got branded.... I see things have progressed a bit since then. Good on ya. I also like the dress code. It's like you hopped off your ride and decided to attend a show.
  • 1 0
That feels like a long time ago now! I had a bunch back then as well, they just weren't as visible.
  • 3 0
whats the food like in Taipei

 Delicious.

Definitely gonna get the DVO stuff can’t wait great company rad customer service best products
  • 2 0
Levy points laser at face, cool.
  • 4 2
DVO shock looks like a Suntour TriAir. Normal they are made by Suntour :-)
  • 2 0
DVO is green, Suntour is blue. Pick the one based on which color matches your bike best.
  • 1 0
Des the TRP 7V could be compatible with sram DH and cassette ? just in case
  • 1 0
@mikelevy I thought no sandals were allowed inside the show! I had to rush and go buy some shoes last time!
  • 2 0
His obsession with wearing sandals to the show borders on dogmatic. He hasn't been refused entry so far this year though...
  • 3 0
They don’t like it but I just try different entryways until I get in
  • 2 0
@mikelevy: With all the tattoos you have already, can't you just have laces tattooed on the top of your foot and a dotty pattern under your sole? That should do. Or to be future proof, do a BOA mechanism instead of laces though that might attract too close scrutineering at this point.

Nothing like lasers to the eyes
  • 1 0
Curious on how much the Evo 7 is going to cost. Will it be similar to Shimano Saint pricing or Zee pricing?
  • 1 0
MYSCAN misspelled their own name in English. Classic bike show stuff!
  • 8 9
DVO... please stop with the green. it looks good with so few bikes
  • 8 0
Orange fork lowers on line 2.
  • 5 0
I kinda like it. Unique and definitely works well with certain color schemes. Plus it will look like a complete kit with that dropper post
  • 3 0
The green is what stands out don’t matter what color frame your using the green will always pop out and stand out DVO for the win
  • 1 0
@fruitsd79: nothing worse than the orange lowers on a red bike
  • 1 0
@ksilvey10: I dono, that sounds kinda rad to me. I do like a lot of color though!
  • 1 0
@Takaya94: I love colorful bikes too. I just don't like when colors clash.
  • 2 0
Orange and kashima on a red frame. Blech.
  • 1 0
@fruitsd79: This is why Jack Moir's bike looks better than Katy Winton's
