Watch as Scott Markewitz and Richie Schley recreate the 1997 Bike Magazine Photo Annual cover 25 years later.

bigquotesThis was a serious taste of nostalgia going back to the early days of pioneering new zones in Freeriding. It was wild to stand in Grand Junction and literally be able to make out Richie's tire tracks that had seen 25 years of weather and were still faint on this rad line that had only been ridden once.Derek Westerlund / Founder and Director Freeride Entertainment

Acknowledging that the tire tracks are still visible 25 years later should have been a clear indication of the fragility of the soil. Folks on the western slope are justifiably sensitive to the ecological damage off trail riding creates. The nostalgia is appreciated. But sadly, in today's over influenced selfie culture this just encourages others to make this same mistake.

Yeah thats nuts. Definitely makes me realize now what everyone is talking about. I understood it before, just never saw an example.

Also I mean nuts in “woah” kind of way. Not a “you damn crazy tree hugger” kind of way.

Effing loved this cover at the time and its just ironic now how there aren't that many covers to actually do... freehub, singletracks UK, and a few others. Sad times. Not sure when the last iconic cover actually was... maybe 10 yrs ago? I get the move - digital rules now, and biking is even more rad that ever but the lack of mags to document that is a massive blow to keeping some of the milestones alive. It would be cool to see more of it.

PS - Misspent Summers has made up for this in recent years, some awesome & iconic material there to buy. Well worth supporting.

In the 1997 photo there's a tire track (or two?) ahead of the rider. So the line has been ridden more than once.

I would assume by Richie…takes a few times to get the shot.

I grew up riding there in the 90s and to see our local stuff on the cover ridden by Richie was unbelievably motivating to a then 16 year old kid. The grand valley was pretty against freeride/DH at the time and getting that boost to the unwanted bastard children of the early riding scene from one of the biggest riders around was so vindicating. I definitely had this taped to my wall until I left home 3 years later haha.

I still have this Photo Annual. So cool they did this. Best mountain bike mag ever IMO.

Tippie probably rode it first, but Richie looked better with his matching gloves and glasses!

This was a great trip down memory lane. It's a great idea for a series of short episodes, keep em' coming if you can. Love the Freeride Entertainment hat!

When can I buy the poster? Had it tacked up in my bedroom shortly after I got my first mtb.
