Video: She Has To Jump - Pinkbike Racing EP1

Jun 8, 2022
by Pinkbike Originals

The 2022 World Cup DH race season gets underway in Lourdes for the Pinkbike Racing team. Aimi Kenyon is a first year junior with a lot of raw potential, but the gap between national races she’s been doing and the World Cup level is massive, so she has to figure it out fast. She has to jump.

This project has been a massive lift. On top of the amazing work by Ben and Sleeper Co, I really appreciate all the people in the background that helped make it happen. The sales team helped us put together an absolutely sick bike, and the marketing people at the sponsor brands bought into a project that is bigger than just getting the most results for the least dollars. That's so damn cool. And a HUGE thanks to Henry and Cat for taking on all the cat-herding. Really excited to see the rest of the season play out.

Shut up and take my money!
(we're going to keep asking for a crowd funder until we get it)

Seriously, loving this!

Putting this public recognition out there is pure class, @brianpark. Well, done. And well done to the team. The video was top shelf.
  • 65 1
We’re excited to be part of this with y’all and see how the riders can develop with the right support. Great first Episode team, can’t wait to see more
  • 26 1
It has been a tremendous honour to work with you and the rest of the team on this project. Such a great group of people working behind the scenes, and it shows.

@PawnSacrifice: What Pawn said - I have also been saying this (stop ripping me off Pawn...or did I rip you off?)

Curious tho, @brianpark - can PB do a kickstarted / gofundme (raffles, whatever) to get PB fans to kick in on the race team? I'd drop some coin on this...esp if we could score one of those effin' jerseys, some used PB nursing home slippers (worn by levy on warm days) - whatever. Seems like a totally free if not near instant source of cash for the team... who on the team couldn't use more coffee, snacks, gas and post-race massage money?

 This is brilliant.
  • 4 0
Bravo. I enjoyed this a lot.
  • 6 0
Congratulations, @brianpark. It must be rewarding to have helped usher something like this into existence.
  • 2 0
This is real good stuff! I don't watch TV, but if there were shows like this I would! Keep it up and keep it honest, Bravo
  • 10 0
Yall take a lot of heat in a post outside-pinkbike world, but this is one of the absolute best outcomes no question. Anyone that thinks solo pinkbike 3 years ago could put on anything like this is clueless, kudos to ALL involved.
  • 1 0
Keep doing for the sport and expand in the same way to XC it will be nice the see it through your perspective.
  • 2 0
@PawnSacrifice: seriously - I would totally contribute to the cause!
  • 174 3
They missed a golden opportunity to have pink bikes
  • 58 2
As much as I love how their kit looks I have to agree.
  • 41 2
they went instead with a pinken opportunity to have gold bikes

nah, pink colored bikes is so early 2010s, Commencal ruined it for everyone imo.
  • 10 0
@Narro2: you haven’t seen Kaos Seagrave’s bike then.
  • 2 5
@louiefriesen: i probably have, i dont know..., maybe I just skimmed through since it wasnt a color i care about atm.

And also riding grim donuts… oink donuts would be a total trip
  • 1 1
@ZanderShredsMtb: ngl, it is a nice looking bike, still the pinkbike team riding a pink bike doesnt fit with the irony of why website was named pinkbike.

We don’t need more bikes, we need more people like Ben Cathro
  • 106 0
When you figure out how to mass produce @ben-cathro I've got jobs for them.
  • 33 3
@brianpark: Yeah, you'd have to line all the Bens up in a Cathrow...
  • 12 0
@brianpark: Ben already has a child, how soon can we have them trackside with a camera strapped to the stroller?
  • 1 0
Very early days, obviously, but Aimi seems like she could be the next Ben Cathro.
  • 5 0
@brianpark: We are gonna need an assembly line-guy
  • 84 0
That was maybe the best video I've watched on PB. Excellent editing, whoever stitched it all together deserves a beer and hearty pat on the back (and more money). I could really feel the excitement, especially hitting the big gaps, can definitely relate.

Ben is just the best, always love watching his content

I'm the parent of a budding racer who's just making his way to nationals in the UK. He's not quite 14 yet but is absolutely loving racing. This weekend coming we're off to North Wales to race with Pearce on a national level track. He's being coached by Katy Curd and getting better, faster and more skilled day by day This video was absolutely inspirational to watch! A fantastic insight. Thank you so so much.
  • 11 0
That’s awesome! Hope he makes a name for himself

Thank you. youtu.be/74T15vl2RkE

@weeksy59: who is down voting these comments, lol
  • 14 4
@SATN-XC: I'm guessing someone who can't jump like a 13 year old lol. Don't worry about it matey, it's all good.
Let's go back to the video discussion.
  • 3 1
 @weeksy59: sick! That’s awesome
  • 1 0
This really is very good indeed! Keep up the good work and we’ll be cheering you on over the season!!
  • 57 0
Great content!!! As a parent of teenage girls who race MTB this is absolutely type of content they need to see. Shred the gnar might work for younger boys, but younger girls find it a little intimidating. They can relate to this!!!!
  • 18 0
Perfect execution of the concept that representation matters.
  • 38 0
You know she's a racer when she goes from being uncomfortable on jumps to wanting to take Thibault's lines a week later. You are an excellent coach Ben! Gud for you Aimi!
  • 36 0
I got surprisingly emotional from that. Great footage, editing and story-telling! Really looking forward to the rest of this series Smile .
  • 4 0
I know right... who is cutting onions in here... Seriously well put together to pull at the heart strings like that.
  • 34 0
Absolutely fantastic video, can't wait to see more of this series. Hats off to everyone involved in the project, this has been so cool and fun to see.

Also, it's already been mentioned, but DAMN, give this editor a raise, that has to be one of the (if not THE) best videos we've seen from Pinkbike.
  • 27 0
The editing was a team effort by Harry, Max R, and Glen, with me, Ben, Henry, Max B, Alan, and plenty more of us chirping from the bleachers.
  • 3 0
Yeh for sure this is for the best bit of true storytelling I've seen from Pinkbike - a big level up... v excited to see where they go with it next.
  • 3 0
@brianpark: really really excellent work. Like this should be in BAMF and the other big outdoor film fests. It's genuinely an amazing stand-alone story.
  • 26 0
That was great! Hell yeah Aimi. And congrats Pinkbike for this program.
  • 25 0
Great stuff! Really looking forward to seeing these throughout the season!
  • 19 0
I think I have a new favourite series, really looking forward to more of this. Great work, all involved in the team itself but also the video, quality. Didn't appreciate how young Aimi is! I wonder if the other racers are wondering when they'll get to be the spotlight in an episode - suspect she'll be in EP2 a fair bit! And Ben's just such a great character at the centre of it all. Even Henry actually being useful. Early days, but kind of feel the Pinkbike Racing project could actually be something, and not just because of the cool costumes.
  • 1 0
I can’t help but wonder if the production will concentrate on a different team member each round (and that without a massive video team that decision has to be made *before* the race weekend).

Obviously in retrospect we’re all hoping Episode 2 features Ben or Aimi, but I wonder if we’ll be disappointed.
  • 4 0
@bykeco: the series is about everyone on the team and going behind the curtain of DH racing. Lots more episodes to follow Aimi’s progress this year.
  • 18 0
Wow: imagine if the crew at EWS had access to YouTube and could watch high quality content like this. They could get ideas on how to provide content and promote riders. Imagine that world.

Great job here pink bike, this was so damn good.
  • 18 0
 Great content. Loved it!
  • 18 0
This is just all sorts of awesome. Well done Pinkpike Racing!
  • 17 0
Thanks for not making us, but FWIW this is the kind of content I'd pay for.
  • 15 0
Seriously impressive - both Aimi's conquest of her doubts and the way the story was told. It beggars belief this could be accomplished with zero bro-jargon and only 2 fist bumps
  • 16 0
Crazy to see how far Pinkbike DH has come. From the Privateer series to Walk the Talk to this. Such good vibes and crazy to see PB riders up there on a world cup leaderboard.
  • 5 0
No shite! And from a 0 racers / 0 racing PB team to four racers / 1 PB team already getting results in 2022 - even over some well established plush factory teams... Aimi is nuking it, just wow.
  • 17 0
Heart warming and inspirational. Kudos PB.
  • 16 0
Those kit and bikes looks pretty pro. I'm pretty impressed.
  • 8 1
 Needs more pink
  • 1 0
@burnerAccount: it would be even better if they had pink bikes
  • 15 0
The scene where she clears the biggest gap and just stops and is clearly giddy literally warmed my heart.
  • 10 0
Hot damn, that was some Quality Content™. Serious props to everyone involved. The level of storytelling was truly top notch. I'm now more interested in Aimi's journey this season than any other racer in the World Cups. Seriously well done pinkbike et al!
  • 14 0
Easily the best MTB content. WELL DONE!
  • 11 0
That was awesome to watch! Super inspiring!
  • 10 0
Good stuff PB. The production value on the video was top-notch, props to all involved in that.
  • 7 0
Damn, if this video didn't stir your emotions I think you need to find yourself a new heart.
I normally just view content and don't bother logging in to PB but for me, this is the best video I've watched in a very long time. Yeah people do big gnarly stuff but this had more........
To capture the emotion, self doubt and the desire to improve that Aimi went through was brilliant and very tasteful editing.
You can tell she is just a wonderful young woman and I for one will now be following her progress and wishing her all the success.
Pinkbike and all the sponsors have done a wonderful thing in putting this team together and giving this young lady a marvelous opportunity. Ben's 'father like' role along with him being her mentor/coach makes him the perfect choice.

Definitely keen for more videos on the team but especially on Aimi and her progress.
  • 8 0
Who needs ews videos when ben and max are knocking videos like this out . Awesome
  • 3 0
So, so so so happy about this! The production level is insane, and massive props to the team for shedding a spotlight on Aimi so early on. Her progression in one episode is immense, and how she overcomes her mental barriers was beautifully portrayed. Can't wait for more of this!
  • 4 0
Great content. So many similar things from the other big teams, but really cool coverage. Cathro is such a great personality to be involved in representing mountain biking at this level. Thanks PB racing!
  • 5 0
Brilliant on every level. It was great to see them at Fort Bill this year. A huge thanks Pink Bike for making this. Ben and Max have done an outstanding job.
  • 6 1
I'm not crying, you're crying. Ben knocks another one out of the park. Aimi has a bright future as a racer!!!! Well done team.
  • 6 0
That intro was hell of an ode to the sport. Got me fired up. Nice work! @ben-cathro
  • 5 0
As a dad and rider also not confident on jumps; this 20min bike video hit a range of emotions. Amazing work!
  • 5 0
Does anyone know what's going on with Beta? No articles in the last 2 weeks
  • 3 0
 It's been binned
  • 2 0
@Jake-Whitehouse: where did you see that?
  • 2 0
@commental: oh shit! So we should all assume everything is dead not just the print section?
That's a shame, I did get it all for free but to be honest I did enjoy the long form stuff
Hopefully PB or beta staff clear it up. Even with all the hate I hope everyone keeps their jobs or gets paid fairly
  • 1 0
@MrHuntso: Looks that way. I guess they didn't get the numbers they were hoping for on the subscription model. It seems from the article that jobs were lost.
  • 7 0
 Can't wait for more!
  • 6 0
Very healthy sponsors I might say!!!! May the pedal be with you all!
  • 7 0
 Best Content Ever
  • 3 0
This is genuine passion for the sport! Thanks all at Pinkbike to keep it like this we need more of this ! Riding bike is going up and down this no matter the riding level. We are all Ben and Amy on our own level
  • 2 0
Such a great video. It's so rad watching what happens behind the scenes as a new rider starts racing the world cup. So true "yeah, I could ride that." but oh those jumps are much bigger in real life. Great work, team. Great work riders, media crew, mechanics, everyone.
  • 1 0
I guess I have a new racer to root for! The racing means so much when you can identify with and relate to the person. Go Aimi!! Ben, you are absolutely the best. Please keep doing exactly what you have been doing. Honestly, this video is one of the best behind the scenes videos I have ever seen.
  • 1 0
This was a seriously great video in every aspect. I don't think I have ever watch a bike video (or any other videos) and felt so happy and amazed how that brilliant story was delivered. Thank you to the whole team in front and behind the cameras to share such a powerful moment. Well done @ben-cathrow, @henryquinney and the whole team. Love it!

I'm a dad (of a sweet 23yr-old daughter) and a mtn biker since '81 or so (I believe I rode the first Stumpjumper imported to Canada @ 10th Ave Cycles in Van, BC -- we did the UBC Endowment Lands and I was hooked). Now I mainly ride a big 950 Super Enduro offroad and a sweet Salsa gravel bike for cardio. Anyway... having ridden MTBs in Whistler, Moab, Indonesia, Thailand and all around Ontario over the last 40 years, I'm humbled by it all now. And scared to think what a wimp I'd be were I a wee teen about to face down a pro career riding terrain like that portrayed in the vid. This young Aimee (sp?) brought an old fart's heart right up into his nasal passages, and knocked loose a few tears. I wish her well, and she should feel lucky she has such good people around her. Because this sport has gotten so much more high-stakes in the last decade, with the cost of failure like that of the highest comp levels in motocross/enduro/rally racing. I massively salute the skill, discipline, balls and ovaries in play here. My advice: Try to keep a few body parts servicable--you'll need 'em later.

 Nice outfits.
  • 5 0
Great work guys! Such excellent content!
  • 3 0
What a brilliant first episode, can't wait for the rest of the season! Refreshing to have an honest no filter insight into racing without the bravado and BS.
  • 3 0
So wholesome to watch. Ben is a treasure. Congratulations and wishing you all a great season of racing, traveling together, learning from one another.
  • 1 0
It's always cool to see young riders with talent, but this video really highlighted Aimi's mental strength & determination. After crashing that first jump on the practice run, then taking a breather time outside the tape, I can't imagine what it would've felt like to keep going down the track. And then cracking an ankle on the final jump, ouch. Looking at the gap jumps and rock gardens on DH courses like this, it's not like you can take it at 80% speed if your confidence is low, you have to really commit. Awesome video, and looking forward to following Aimi's progress!
  • 2 0
Is the reversed 13 on the bike like a superstition or something? I would totally buy a PB race jersey with a inverted 13, its a lucky number to me, both my son and daughter were born on a Friday 13.
  • 2 0
Properly done! Great coverage, great project! When you find yourself inspired by a kid, you know you’re in the right sport! Big up to all involved and keep pushing! Great job PinkBike!
  • 2 0
Excellent work as team manager, rider, mentor, film maker etc. This is insanely good content and I enjoy watching it more than just another action loaded jumping clip or whatever.
  • 1 0
Great video, so hats off to @bencathro and the team.
Fantastic insight on how it feels for a junior rider to race in their first World Cup and having been at Fort Bill for Round 2, I can confirm that there’s some great British talent amongst the Juniors.
  • 1 0
This is why I want my kids in mountain biking. Role models like Ben Cathro and up and comers like Aimi Kenyon. The care they have for one another...and the skillz to pay the billz! Love it! This series is already pure gold. Nice work Pinkbike...Ben Cathro is legend
  • 1 0
Fantastic production but better than that was the progression that Aimi made; having the courage to get back on and ride after a couple of knocks (a bit more than a knock into the funicular wall I would say) and compete in her first race is a tremendous acheivement - and all caught on camera! Well done.
  • 2 0
I bloody love this! So stoked to see Aimi step into the big arena and handle it like that and so impressed with Ben and his support of this awesome young racer.
  • 9 4
 TRD called...
  • 30 0
Hah we've gotten that a bit but I think the kits look really good. The colours are Pinkbike red, Continental orange, and Öhlins/Outside yellow.

  • 1 0
 Yass.. This needs to happen!
  • 3 0
This is seriously awesome. That “what is downhill” intro got me so fired up! Can’t wait for the rest of the series.
  • 1 0
Ben's intro had me so stoked for DH.
Thibault's jump at 2:39 had me "oh yeah, thats why i dont ride DH"

Aimi's a star, and i dont know if you made a big enough thing about coming 9th!
  • 2 0
What an awesome video!! Great content that actually shows racing from a different fresh perspective.
