Why would you choose Japan as your ultimate biking holidays? Chombo is probably the answer you have always ask yourself.

Last summer with the help of local guide Jimi Bush, a French group of friends had the chance to ride some of the best spots of the country of the rising sun. More than a bike trip, they experienced one of the richest traditional culture in the world.

For those who don’t know the crew, The Giros is a collective from eastern France. For ten years they spent their time road tripping, digging, partying and biking, always with the good vibes attitude. The crew is composed of Aurélien, Julien, PL, Marco, Corentin, Pierre and Thomas (From left to right).

You probably have already seen one of their good quality movies with original storytelling like El Camino Loco or The Wild Ride West made by Pierre Henni.

First spot: Matsuzaki - Local guide: Yamabushi Trail Tour

South West of Tokyo : Corentin & Marco are riding down the sacred trails of Yamabushi. Made of tunnels of roots, it’s a unique network of trails in the middle of the Jungle. The trails are 2000 years old, they were used by the priests to connect the shinto shrine temple from the ocean. Now they are like giant bobsleigh, used mainly for mountain biking. The local community is taking care of the digging of this endless flow trails. At the end of the day you can eat some of the best sushi in the world.

Second spot Fujiten - Local Guide: Daiki Takahashi

At the bottom of sacred volcano Mt Fuji San, Thomas et Julien are bombing the Fujiten bikepark. A very special spot in the middle of a bamboo Forest. The black dirt is a perfect mixture of volcanic sand and dirt. The grip is insane, you don’t need brakes for the corners. If you want to experience summer skiing there is a fancy grass field, just for the fun.

Third spot Hakuba - Local Guide: Hakuba Mountain Bike Club & Jimi Bush

Ski powder mecqua Hakuba, is also home of the good biking. The local community is strong and pushing hard to grew up the next generation of champions. The Bikepark of Iwatake is offering a large choice of tracks, like this 7km flowtrail that feels like never ending. PL & Pierre are surfing the dust of this giant pumptrack. What a crazy ride ! The valley of Hakuba is surrounded by Japanese Alps and rice fields. If you are lucky enough you can meet monkeys and bears in the forests..

This movie brings you on a deep journey through the local communities from the antique Japanese culture to the modern fancy high tech of Tokyo. For those who want to experience a new, good quality mountain bike destination, Japan is definitely one to had in your to do list.

The entire video was just pro level. The riding, cinematography, and edit was just awesome.

I find it odd that virtually every time I hear about Japanese trails they mention NOT skidding (there are often signs) and the first thing in this vid is two d-bags skidding at every opportunity.

Yes, I have spent many years teaching riders to ride trails without skidding, we get tons of rain here and skidding makes trail work more and in DH sections erodes like crazy! But the skidding seems to be a new fad in riding style! hahahahah
If they are at a park for bikes cool, but natural trails need to be preserved and rode with respect! Smile

I agree. Nothing like skidding in a sacred area.

The lead-in shot of riding up on the mossy bank sure looks like a "STAY ON THE DAMNED TRAIL!" moment.

OMG so sick! Thanks for posting @GiromagnyEnduroTeam Can you give some beta on the soundtrack? That first song is amazing! I took a ski trip to Hokkaido last winter and might need to MTN bike on Honshu next!!!

Everytime i see those stories i have to laugh. I live currently in Japan and its the worst place for anyone who loves biking. No joke. I did not even brought my bike as there is nothing. No trails, nothing. There is maybe one or two spots and only if you know locals. Ownership of car is another ridiculous thing and transportation too. Japan is cool experience but hardly bike friendly place. If you are into hiking, do a two week trip. Otherwise save your money and do some riding in Europe or US.

Hey my friend, we have been riding with locals in very nice places. They have proper trails and true mountain bike knowledge. Maybe you should explore more and connect with those locals mentioned in the video. They know the good stuff. Peace

Sounds like you haven’t done your research, while Japan is no Canada or Europe or U.S. in terms of mountain bike spots it has slowly been spreading around in spite of the difficulties to obtain permission from land owners when making new trails.

Calling it the worst place for anyone who loves bikes or claiming there are only one or two spots is not accurate specially when the video showcases three different spots. As for transportation depending on where you are located and where you are going you might or might not need a car, owning one is not mandatory consider renting that’s what I do. You also might want to check with your local bike shop, these tend to host monthly trail riding events or at least should be able to give a better idea of where to go.

Happy trails.

I see loads of mountains, great forest and loam. Great natural trails and artificials. Seems there is a great mtb community at leat, and if they do trails as work as they hard and keep their nice country... I don´t see what you said it seems Netherlands..

@MasterOfStone: Let's be honest, you have to live very close to those place + you have to know "locals". Which compared to US or Europe is what Im missing ... going on your own, exploring places, finding trails, being free. And I think for that reason, you have way more fun riding your bike in France or Swiss or US. Because you can be free there. And by free I mean trails that are open and accessible and developed for everyone, not hidden secret spots you need a permission for (and I get it, the laws and land ownership is simply different in Japan). For me it is just sad experience, nothing more. Peace.

@PauRexs: Thats the problem that you see something until you there and its totally opposite Smile Btw I never mentioned Netherlands, I think if I say Europe, we all know the places where to ride a bike...

@kusa: nope, I live nowhere near the spots I go to, don’t know the locals and have used either train or car rental to commute. As for going on your own and exploring again get in touch with your local bike shop or do as @Giromagnyenduroteam suggests.

Once you stop comparing Japan mtb scene to other places you’ll probably start enjoying your riding more and getting know new places.

Cheers

Well, first thing living abroad would be to meet locals and get integrated. Japan has trails and huge potential. That s like going to Whistler and stay only in the bike park. It s not even scratching the surface.

Fusionning spirituality and mtbiking is the future... no one realized yet.. our sport is a martial art... This is the new way I concieve it, and it damn works.. Congrats for the excelent work.

@PaulRexs: MTB is very spiritual. I agree. I myself am very much what one would call a “soul rider”. I can absolutely see the parallels between martial arts and MTB.
