 @bigtim: stunning shoe grab!

Since 80% of the runs included only 4 seconds of the start and then the motorway section to the finish, yes Ben, we f*cking noticed the canned noises.

 Oh we noticed the sound

Sounds like collecting gravel in Minecraft

So was this GCN doing this? What the f*ck were they thinking?
  • 4 0
@jayacheess: if it was they didn't tell Rick about it as he commented on a bike early in the race that it sounded bad off the jumps and probably need the bolts gone over at the bottom lol

@jayacheess: GCN is only taking the feed provided by whatever company UCI contracted as far as I am aware. It may have been the same company as ESO Discovery uses, or it may not be. I'm going to assume that it was someone different as camera placement was not very good to say the least, or at least worse than what ESO Discovery has so far given us. If the leaky dampers are back in Andorra, well then we know that it's ESO Discovery. If not, then it's most likely something stupid that UCI has come up with on their own.

I think I saw a Eurovision (i.e. Eurovision Sports) logo card between the women's and men's broadcasts.

@handynzl: I didn't hear anything on the BBC feed. They were presumably using the same cameras.

Does anyone have a link to the sound? I want to see what everyone is talking about. Thank you.

the sound was here on France Television... The commentator even drew on the noise to say how complex the MTB suspensions were. Shitty comments, he knew nothing about it but talk nonsense and continually compare to motocross. Julien Absalon with him did not dare to contradict him. Really lame.

The bike landing sound. Some rando heavy breathing that they would play during the drone shots up top. Even some random noise between the jumps that was supposed to sound like a bike riding on dirt? Jr. level sound design shit.

"Due to UCI rules I can't show you"...
No matter, thanks Ben for this lovely job once again and for your shiny smile Smile

Thank you a hundred times Ben for doing what you do. You provide entertaning in-depth analysis in your style (wouldn't trade that for anything) with a postive atitude even when you are injured or in other not so perfect situations AND while managing the Pinkbike team. Your feature here on the one turn was more informative AND enertatining than 50 of the "UCI Highlights" trash. We hope Pinkbike gives you four raises soon!! Kudos and rubber side down!

The hero we need, but don’t deserve!

 The mic we need

On the motorway I was really thinking that the Commencals sounded like shopping trolleys going off a curb for every landing, I wonder if they saved the sounds for some bikes over others, because it had me thinking there was something seriously wrong with them in particular. Thanks for pointing that out Ben!

Ben thank you for this segment it was some f the only coverage I could listen too and then mentioning the FAKE FOLEY added for the idiot producers who think they are making a snuff film.
I am a sound mixer and would have walked off the show for being ordered to use fake sounds like old B/W TX shows like My 3 Sons.
It sickens me to see what has become of our live coverage. Man I miss Rob and the Caminator.

I went back to my GCN+ replay to check the sounds, with commentary off. Once you are aware, it's so ridiculous. AND they even added the same heavy breathing sound, as if they had placed microphones in some riders' helmets! Pathetic, please stop it.

Curious to know what is going on with Greg's tires this season. I think that is three tire DNFs this season.

Maybe it is wheels? I just noticed that Neko, who used to run reserve wheels, is on DT swiss now. He pretty much has complete freedom to choose his components so read into that what you will...

Nice video Ben. Would be nice to see what happened in the open section for such big time differences, that section is normally pretty close so the changes must have made a difference to some line choices for carrying speed. Those who turned up to the nationals a few weeks back did well too. The race was won on the main DH section on the rocks higher up but that corner should never have been touched this year, it was working fine... All that was needed was the root just after the metal bridge removed as it forces riders outside of it mostly and some inside of it. It's in the uphill pedal and makes that section torture. Laurie wheeling over it on the pedals was pretty cool. Don't get why they fixed up so much of the track and didn't remove or significantly change that uphill section, build it up a little at the bottom then a double over the river with a backside higher up than the current trail would have been mint and sorted it. You only go for it on a race run normally as it's where you burry yourself sprinting before the motorway.

You are spot on, the open top section before the woods Hatton did something special, the berm turn was irrelevant to the result, (sorry Ben)
  • 1 0
@jimmythehat: Agreed - seemed as though it was just after the open bit? But higher up the run where he was on a different track. Lot's of people were up on Hatton in sector 1. I was thinking top of sector 2?
  • 1 0
@jimmythehat: It was still relevant if the riders cocked it up, but yeah there were surprisingly big gaps on the earlier split(s)
  • 1 0
@chakaping: not it if they were already down but yes there was one second at the bottom shown by Kolb, likely lost on the motorway though.
Point is it wasn’t key to anything

So much better than the broadcast.

I thought the section in the trees that featured in Ben's "inside the tape" video took out more of the male riders (I didn't get to see any of the women's race since it was so early).

Anyway, nice video Ben, as always! I'm really happy for Charlie, but I have to admit I didn't find the race all that exciting overall. My idea of "exciting race" correlates pretty strongly to having the podium placings change a lot over the last 20 riders. It was a bit anticlimactic to see quite a few riders get green on early splits and then crash. Still, that's how it goes sometimes, eh? Still, don't want that to take anything away from Charlie, who put it all together in a way no other rider was able to, and deserved the win!

 Autoplay is still rocking.

Canned sound was doing my head in. Please do not ever use it again. Rather have real sound or no sound.

 insane coverage!

Next race: 2-stroke sounds every time a rider pedals hard.
